  • Steel Curtain opened at Kennywood in 2019. This is the tallest coaster in Pennsylvania and it includes the most inversions of any ride in North America. But it has been mired with downtime. Kennywood just announced that this coaster will be closed for the entire 2024 season to improve its reliability and longevity. This video looks into the ride's issues and what will be changing.

    Cannot imagine how infuriated park officials must be with how much of a mess this coaster has been pretty much since the beginning. Then again, they took a MAJOR risk with S&S, as this is something the manufacturer hasn't done before, so this risk may be coming back and biting them in the rear end.
    I think these final modifications may be a last hurrah for the coaster - if they don't succeed, I have to imagine that the park may look to tear it down (as devastating as that would be) and start all over again. I've only ridden this once, and that was last May, so I'm glad that I got to experience this coaster.

    Very frustrating history for this ride. It reminds me of something I used to design on Planet Coaster at 2 AM after I have been drinking too much 😂
    The design is certainly innovative, but in a way that pushes the envelope and bends it in strange ways. You know something is up when Coaster Studios gives a ride like this a 7/10. Shame because it could have been a clear-cut and reliable winner.

      Coaster Studios, like many reviewers of it, have only ridden it first thing in the morning when it’s running slow as a slug. You gotta wait for the afternoon for when it’s warmed up like how Canobie filmed it to get the best possible. Sadly you run the risk of it going down.

  • @bbbbbb111
    @bbbbbb111 2 месяца назад +1

    Visually, the structure actually looks quite stable. But of course I don't have a 3D model to really calculate the forces. The layout with the high rail parts is somewhat reminiscent of Der Schwur des Kärnan. I'm guessing that's where the structural problems arise. Kärnan has been criticized by many for the large number of supports in this area because it supposedly doesn't look good. But it seems necessary to give the structure the necessary strength. Perhaps S&S has designed this area too weakly in the Steel Curtain, because compared to Kärnan it looks more delicate. Of course, these are all just speculations; for example, I don't know how thick the walls in the supports are. Maybe S&S uses thicker walls than Gerstlauer and therefore needs fewer supports. It was just noticeable that the structure of Steel Curtain looks more delicate with fewer supports than comparable roller coasters.

    • @CanobieCoaster

      Only the park and S&S truly know the answer. I can only speculate based off rumors and what has been observed.
