There is nothing more dangerous than a man who is confident in his ignorance.
I think a tsunami is more dangerous ^^
@@marcoc8810 depends.
@Prairiedoggen there is a serious difference between taking a life and asking someone to morally justify taking a life
Prairiedoggen the meat eater is not the one being killed.. how could he be a victim? Only his taste buds are not more important than the animals life
Its almost painful to see this guy, thinking he's educated and philosophical
‘Why does it matter if there’s a victim’. Holy shit.
Fairly average response....from any psychopath

*This dude said animals don't experience conscious pain because they don't know English* .
Perhaps now I've heard it all.
Yeah haha
No, you're twisting words.
He said you cannot threaten an animal with pain, therefore they are, if only slightly, less conscious/aware of pain.

@@not-sodeadinside7237 he clearly was trying to say *english* words cannot scare a dog, so therefore it cannot feel pain on the same level... *idiotic*
True, true.
But circus animals, like (most of)you vegans for example, get abused every day(you get tortured every day by people not sharing your lifestyle), so they feel the I N C R E D I B L E P A I N you're talking about.
Killing an animal in less than 2 seconds isn't that I N C R E D I B L E P A I N.
First time hearing the "animals are lesser because they can't be threatened a day in advance in English" argument. Good grief.
I guess it's okay to stab babies in the throat and eat them.
Griffin Moore That was tough to watch..I can’t believe Ed wasn’t able to refute that until the lady pointed it out
lmfao
I hadn’t watched the whole video yet I’d just started, and I saw this comment, got me laughing :D
Well, the guy was all over the place and wasn't at all interested in listening. I think it can be even more difficult to argue these absurd ones- as you can't figure what could possibly resonate with a person who is so far gone in their argument.
I could see this guy fighting against ending slavery in the 1800s and against women's rights in the 1920s.
And I can see him on live TV or running for public office saying "racism bad. Women and men should be treated equally.", and then going home and abusing his wife telling her to make some food and using racist words to complain about other ethnicities for no reason just because he randomly saw one outside his window. And then the wife hates him more and more and decides to leave while he acts all masculine at first pretending he has it under control until she ignores him and gets a restraining order and next thing you know he got angry and enraged for realizing hes not "in control" like he thought and his masculinity was an illusion and thus he got enraged and next thing you know he shot her to "reassert his authority" while saying "God I know you understand and forgive me". I won't.
And he says that he loves dogs. He clearly does not.
Yet we euthanize our pets and dogs to end their pain and suffering. Or perhaps this man believes that we do that for our own pleasure because the dog or cat is not feeling pain and isn’t aware of its own mortality so I wonder how he rationalises euthanasia for pets.

Oh shit, I'm taking a philosophy class right now 😂😂😂 hopefully I don't turn into a douche bag.

Wow. What makes Ed brilliant at debating is not just his huge amount of knowledge and intelligence but his endless and generous amount of patience. He is a great example of human grace.
First "plants feel pain tho"
now "animals don't feel pain"
we are regressing
EXACTLY!!!
They make up reality as they see fit
Random Boredom Productions Plants are obviously living things... it's just silly to say they are sentient. Plants don't experience life like come on. This argument is dumb because whether you're vegan or not, you eat plants
Random Boredom Productions Guy, okay maybe plants do have some sort of experiential consciousness, but slicing an apple definitely doesn't give the human a feeling of disturbance, but seeing slaughter house footage of a cow's throat getting sliced open does. Doesn't that tell you something? Yes it does, it means that one is food and the other is a species living on earth with us. There's a reason we can dice tomatoes and not tear flesh off an animal and eat it. There's also a reason why slaughter houses are hidden and behind closed doors, because it's morally wrong and we were given that compass
Random Boredom Productions Vegans don't think they're better than everyone else, but we definitely get frustrated at silly arguments like yours. And frankly I don't even know why i'm wasting my energy on this.
For a man who claims he is not religious, he sure talks about God a lot.

he is probably super Christian but does not want to portray it. I know a Christian who likes debating morality without bringing the word god or religion into it.
He's just a garden variety entitled halfwit actually.

This man has never considered animal rights or veganism before but he took an intro to philosophy class once so obviously he knows everything there is to know
🤣
To be fair, it is irrelevant, he doesn't need to, because his belief is, that animals are kind of robots.
@@pirds102010 feel like the comment is still valid doe, he is using dense philosophy coupled with unfalsifiable claims to justify his behaviour. He claims that humans have a sould that makes us different from any other animal, this can't be known, or at the very least it isn't knon right now. With some knowledge of evolutionary biology there are reasons to even believe that animals would feel pain to a deeper extent than humans, this is speculation but it is based in the fact that we can avoid undesirable stuff (predators, or any harm) in huge part by our intelligence/ability to abstract, since animals can't do this, it makes sense to believe that they would rely more on their crude physical sensations such as pain to avoid such harms. He says animals are just mechanical biological robots but we share a common ancestor with every single life form, the general hardware we have has been developed in an identically before we split with other apes in the evolutionary tree, meaning that when it comes to general sensations, pain is probably a shared thing with most animals, given that it is a sensation that would promote evolution (as an example people that don't feel pain are in risk of having many health problems/injuries that could kill them if not rutinely checked)
He also says morality is ultimately just personal preference (I don't think ed readily agreed) which is true, or at least I share that opinion, this doesn't invalidate morality, even if relative and just an random evolutionary trait that helped us survive, the fact is that it is still there, it still exists, whether objective or subjective, and acting in disacordance with it is inmoral by definition, even if subjective.
It kinda seems like this guy probs just got a intro class to philosophy and he used this to post-hoc rationalise, he did say some animal treatment is cruel, so despite animals just being mechanical robots, they still hold some moral consideration? Surely if what he values if the sould, and animals lack this, he wouldn't extend moral value to them. I think he probably has the normal intuition that harming animals is fucked up but this is in tension with his actions, and his metaphysical views on souls act as a way to overcomplicate animal rights.
Long response, tl:dr, scientifically there is no reason to believe we are significantly different from animals, at least in crude pain sensations and other things, the big difference is the ability to abstract and stuff like language. Morality being subjective doesn't matter and he probably is using intro philosophy knowledge to in a way post hoc justify his actions, through a worldview that isn't supported by any empirical method of study or science, it doesn't even stem from non-experiential deductive or inductive logic.
Reminds me of a flat earther I know. He took a philosophy class and a critical thinking class, but can't actually use critical thinking, hence the flat Earth crap.
This is what it’s like arguing with a narcissist: they demand to finish their point while never letting you speak. Take things on irrelevant tangents but require you to stick to their points. Extremely frustrating, there is no way to see and be seen with these people.
The guy talks like he’s jerking himself off
yes and you can see how high he thinks of himself and all his "intellectualness" and "rationality"...... just this fact alone is icky.
but this is completely normal for narcissists, they think of them as the highest, like climate protesters or woke people often. If you think you are perfect or "so good", "better than the rest" you already lost. You can improve so much, you cannot imagine! Self improvement, responsibility instead of complaining. Get vegan for example, I try this for sure and nobody can be perfect.@@sofiabrasil
@@pirds102010 climate protestors dont think they are better than anyone else, they literally risk their safety and freedom to draw attention to issues the only way they have ever been solved (disruption of government or day to day services until it becomes something that is costing the government money) all to protect your freedoms like freedom of expression, freedom to protest or freedom to live in a world that isnt being destroyed. And all for people who they know will hate them for it. You cant compare that to a narcissist.

So so so true
10 seconds in "why is it wrong for someone to be a victim" ... WOW!
Blew me away too.
Knew it was going downhill from there, like wtf
You do realize that plants do not have brains or nervous systems, right? You should know this. You should also know that even if plants were to feel pain and suffering a vegan diet would minimize that too since vegans consume far fewer plants and animals than meat eaters.
And this is coming from someone who supports factory farming? Why should I listen to you? Either you're trolling or you're trying desperately to find minute perceived inconsistencies in the vegan lifestyle to justify your own blatantly immoral behavior.
"Why are you kicking that dog?"
"Well, I saw you kick a rock earlier and since biological features is an irrelevant factor when we constructor moral frameworks so kicking this dog is basically the same thing as kicking a rock"
"WHAT?!"
"This dog doesn't speak english, nor can he tell the future, therefore he can't feel pain the way I do."
-Donkey Of The Day
@getonfort : what did he mean then?
Grace the dude got tongue twisted that’s it... his point was clear there’s levels of sentience
Please don't insult the donkeys :(
@Grace because he didnt know how to reply, but he could have approached with another example. Visual threats which will any language speaker understand. I take a knife in my hand (or gun), and point to you and show with my finger that i will do an action with this weapon to harm you (very gently but visual understandable).
You will understand, dog wont!
Even tho you maybe never have been attacked by knife, you will acknowledge the threat.
Animal wont UNLESS it has not experienced it before. But there is also a term for this, and it is called training. If dog learns that the gun means threat, and i switch to AK47 dog, again, wont understand what does it means. Human will!
His point is clear. Animals are not at the same level as humans are. Thinking that they are is not logical.
Humans have more potential for everything, they have more intellect, and dont react mostly on their instincts.
Animals wont get this level of evolution in next thousands of years. Even if we dont interfere, most of the species wont evolve and will stay as animals due to many other factors. Diseases, other predators etc...
@@matrusum7629 I see you a sensible person , than a person who just speaks in a fast paced soft tone about morality and responsibilits and expects everyone to feel he is correct just because he is kind hearted ..example :- Earthling Ed
The entire debate is like
Ed: "Do you think animals feel pain like us?"
the guy: "No, I don't think animals have awareness of the future."
"See what happens when I threaten this dog? Clearly god didn't give it a soul."
It's sad to see the lack of compassion in other human beings 💔
This guy is all about "let me finish" but then cuts of Ed 1000x times

"I believe animals are like biological machines." Human arrogance at it's finest.
Dorn many people who eat meat and dairy products take the most ridiculous stands when debating vegans. To me it is a clear sign that they are actually conflicted, bust just so uncomfortable with the thought of being wrong that they end up sounding like lunatics. Like people claiming that no life have value, including their own and shit like that just to be logically consistent.
Sam I don’t believe in the soul either, that has absolutely nothing to do with anything. Life’s value doesn’t stem from an outsiders opinion. Neither you or I can claim that life has no value, because it is the individuals will to live that dictates the value of their life.
You can on the other hand argue that from a broader perspective individuals life doesn’t have any value. Anyone of us can die any day, and many people die every day without it affecting the state of the world. Same goes for animals of course. But value of life isn’t based on value in such a broad scale. Laws aren’t written based on if you murder less than 2% of the countries population it’s ok, for a reason.
I have serious doubts that anyone actually believe life has no value if you start to dissect their arguments. It is just something lost teenagers and meat eaters claim ;)
veganvvarrior when I debate against a vegan I don’t think I sound ridiculous I feel like I’m allot smarter than the dumbass who I’m debating Bc their vegan.... they bring up the same few things in every debate and base it off of morality and that’s it
@Sam I agree completely. I think more people should study philosophy, and it would make conversation like the one presented in the video much more productive.
@@DiamondSquidy maybe because those arguments are important and valid? Climate change is caused partly by greenhouse gases, is it wrong to bring those up in every debate? Also there are many more points that moral. Pandemics outbreaks, climate change, antibiotic resistant bacteria. Those are also for a large part caused by animal agriculture
”If it doesnt make me feel bad why would it be wrong for me to do it (harm them)?” FBI should put this guy on their watchlist 👀
This man is confusing sentience with intelligence; they are two entirely different things. Amazing how tolerant and patient Ed is.
"It's hard to win an argument with a smart person, but it's damn near impossible to win an argument with a stupid person"
Funny the humans who keep using the "inteligent" argument are never intelligent. It's like they're compensating for their lack of intelligence by constantly trying to remind others that "humans are more inteligent Than animals" so they can feel included in the inteligent club, the club that 99% of humans aren't part of and never can be. No wonder they're insecure.

@@kubush Good question. I think it could be if it's out of necessity like he talked about. I think about the future population.
"The current world population of 7.6 billion is expected to reach 8.6 billion in 2030, 9.8 billion in 2050 and 11.2 billion in 2100, according to a new United Nations report being launched June 2017"
We can hardly sustain the population where it's at, so what's going to happen after that? If every baby was born because abortions were illegal, that would add to the problem of overpopulation. Now, personally I couldn't bring myself to get an abortion unless it was necessary for my survival for some reason, because it's not totally morally right to kill any sentient being. @@LeeDowningKeat oh yeah.)) Now when I watch i have an urge to go through screen and be there because he didn't use some good arguments and missed some points (haven't finished the video though). Vegan-activists always kinda fail when philosophy, isoteric or religion come in.
Although this one is the best philosophy vs veganism arguments.
Alice's shelter Ed may not be the best but he's one of the most calm and composed. Unfortunately he does miss quite a few points and I agree he drops the ball in any kind of religious or spiritual discussion. He could really learn from Gary Yourofsky's speeches or Joey Carbstrong's debates on that topic, as both of them not only understand spirituality as opposed to organized religion, but are extremely open-minded to the concept & have well-thought out proper responses.
@@harveyplantharvester1502 i don't know who gary yourofsky is. But from what I saw Joey is worse at religious arguments. When the opponent has a completly different worldview Joey is just getting frustrated (i'm not against him at all, ge's doing a good thing, it's just sometimes he seems a bit agressive though i totally understand how those ppl might make u mad)
When Ed tries to find issues, very politely.
Joey's very passionate and transparent so you can easily read his emotions, but he has a great ability to hold his composure when he's being attacked on all sides, like on TV shows. He also has a very impressive record of convincing people to become vegan, so I'd hardly say he was "worse" at anything. It would literally take you 2 seconds to find out who Gary Yourofsky is just by putting his name in a youtube search. He paved the way for these activists and practically convinced the whole country of Israel to go vegan.
"Why is it wrong to cause the pain?" Do these ppl hear themselves when they talk? WTF
I know. lmao
That is very disturbing and cruel... :(
This is what happened when you have no good reason not be vegan and you're left with crazy excuses
Psychopaths
actually not necessarily. he was trying to be philosophical and in philosophical circles or debate, questions which may appear psychopathic are actually necessary to ask sometimes
Ed is so unbelievably patient and respectful. Even when dealing with extremely difficult people like this and being constantly interrupted and barely allowed to Speak 🙄
Ed doesn't even have to try hard to get them to completely obliterate their own arguments. He's one absolutely brilliant young man.
"why does it matter if there's a victim?" I would have been too scared to continue talking to someone who is so clearly emotionally deranged.
He was clearly a psycho. But at least an open and not a covert one. I would have stopped talking to him at that point too, waste of energy
Open about it only because he seems to truly be unaware of his own lack of empathy, which is also sad
As a philosphy student it makes me sick listening to that dude trying to use philosphy as an excuse for killing animals.
late reply, but as a fellow philosophy student, you have to hear him out. i have, and i disagree with him (i think that we can grant that pleasure/pain are good/bad as our foundations). just because hes using our subject to argue for something with which we violently disagree does not mean that we can fob it off. you have to hear his case and provide good objections, rather than dismiss. the questions hes raising do have some philosophical merit imo
Same omg, I’ve never cringed so hard in my life. This guy was literally moving like Descartes with his views on animals.
@@jos9559 you can use a philosophical idea or whatever to deem anything acceptable.
@@noobslayeru i have no idea what you are trying to show by saying that. it is true that for any statement, there probably exists a philosophical idea which, if true, means that the statement is true. but this doesnt mean that the philosophical idea is actually true. all im saying is that even though i disagree with his arguments, you still have to hear out his philosophy to be able to argue against it. you cant dismiss his argument by simply saying 'it makes me sick that hes using philosophy'

Don't try to have a discussion with people that have a closed body language (crossed arms) when they're trying to 'listen' to you, they're actually waiting to speak and aren't taking in anything that you're saying. People like that want to have an argument, not a discussion... That's why he kept saying "you haven't convinced me", which is funny because he hardly let Ed speak 🤔

This is incredible to see. There are so many layers to this: this guy seems, to me at least, to be really struggling with their ethics and morals especially in relation to religion. It's a scary reality to come to terms with, the way animals are exploited. It's so amazing to see you work, and teaching me so much about defending my own morals amd ethitcs.
watching this in 2022 after seeing all of Ed's other debates i will say that he has improved his debating skills and is so much better ! like in this one he is kinda matching the other debaters energy but in his newer ones he is super calm and collected even if the other guy raises his voice and Ed always stays on topic and bring is back to the focal point if the other debater goes off on something else. so well done ED!

Oh my god shoot me..."dogs don't understand English so therefore animals are not sentient"...........
its so funny because they understand more english than this guy LOL
Amber Townsend If animals are sentient, should we hold them to the same standards as us and keep them from eating meat?
James Morrison humans are born herbivores. We can consume animal products but we don’t need to, ie. cats are carnivores but they can eat grass. Now, since humans have attained a period in our existence where we no longer have to depend on animals for food and, instead, we can eat plants for food, why not do so? There are millions of studies that show not only the benefits of plant consumption, but how as the human race we are best suited to only depend on plants for sustenance. I have been vegan for three years, when I was an omnivore I was a diehard meat eater. I would judge vegans and use lies to justify why I ate meat , ‘comforting lies’ instead of the ‘uncomfortable truth.’ I have never felt better, ever.
@@Jracula_ good for you feeling better. But Im not a diehard meat eater omnivore. I think we should definitely all decrease our meat consumption. It isn't sustainable for sure. But humans are not born herbivores. Sure a baby can't eat a steak, but baby birds have to have predigested food. That doesn't mean they're not eventually supposed to eat the typical bird diet.
Plenty of humans don't understand english, are they not sentient?
I hate this whole attitude of "oh it must have been a girlfriend you were dating that made you vegan" as if as a male you shouldn't be predisposed to burdening yourself with anything as trivial as empathy.....I mean like what the Hell!

I can point out that I’m glad I have just as much patience. So many people feel attacked when just having an open discussion about the topic, and defend themselves by being hostile. I don’t need to believe in a god to have decency and morals.
YES
Thank you.
That's wrong, Meshari. We live in a civilized world due to morals, some of which were meaningful and universally agreed upon enough to become laws. Morals are the baseline of what society believes is right and wrong and with inspection they guide us in maximizing our own well being. They give us the ability to experience lives significantly better than what is available through chaos and nature alone.
Meshari, one topic at a time. You said there is no need for morals without God so I told you that most humans value civilization through human rights which can exist with or without a God. You agree, right?
Wouldn't you say believing in human rights is a moral position? If there's no need for morality why not abandon all laws?
Of course, this is opinions. But they consistent and they aim to maximize well being and minimize suffering. We can measure whether something is successful in that regard quite easily.
