Summing up the first student's philosophy: 'Our culture is better than everyone else's and we should spread our values to the less enlightened'...Maybe he should look up what (mainly) British and French imperialists did in Africa a couple of centuries ago and see if he finds the ideological similarities desirable. Perhaps a bit harsh, given that he clearly hadn't given it a great deal of thought, but that is part of the point. Speaking of unfavourable associations, 'I am just following society' is no more defensible than 'I was just following orders', which definitely did not stand up at the Nuremberg trials. Again, not saying at all that Student 1 is a Nazi, just that laziness in laying out your philosophical views can come across really badly, especially when you make sweeping generalisations.

I suppose he sidestepped the question of 'how do YOU justify not being vegan' and answered an easier one. I don't know of any other country in the world that has this food desert problem. Most people in the world fall somewhere between having access to any kind of food they want (i.e. living in a wealthy city) or having to survive on the cheapest, locally-grown plant foods they can get their hands on. The US is a strange mixture of contradictions: One the richest nations, while also one of the most unequal; spends the most on healthcare, yet is one of the least healthy; is a 'leading liberal democracy', and yet has serious inequality...

Exactly. People argue moral philosophy, without even having a moral framework for themselves. Its easy to use philosophy to break down everything, which leads to nihilism, but these people are not living a nihilist life. They use their limited knowledge of philosophy to attack a view, while they dont have any replacement for it. The basic idea of having compassion / to avoid causing suffering, is not good enough for them.. .yet they dont have any other framework in place. They really, trully are, only controled by the society. And that is scary. THe guy was honest.

@@SaturatedCat No. The only thing that needs to be supplemented is B12, the rest is a personal choice. As for the healthcare costs, there is a right way and a wrong way of eating a vegan diet. The wrong way includes fringe diets, like only eating fruit, which, though they are technically 'vegan', are so far from typical vegan diets, as to make the association absurd. These diets could make someone ill, but eating vegan food correctly, meaning eating a variety of plant foods including beans, nut, seeds, fruit, vegetables etc and educating yourself on the nutritional needs of the human body and the nutritional content of food is more likely to improve your health than be detrimental. For example, the average vegan has a healthy BMI, which is more than you can say for the average US resident. Also, healthcare costs are not inevitable in every country. Americans get the dubious honour of living in a country that is one of the richest in the world and spends the most on healthcare, while actually being less healthy and having food deserts AND having that same healthcare system potentially putting them in debt. When policies that would make the system more like those in the countries that spend less and have healthier citizens are introduced, they are branded as 'socialist' and therefore 'evil'.

Having some raise a cute baby animal, feeding it every day, giving it water every day until early adult hood or sometimes not even adult hood still. Then having them kill it while it struggles for its life, skin it, chop it up, and package it. That’s not a privilege okay. More so than availability, the pleasure combined with the affordability as well as the availability found in their day to day food. They aren't actually referring to the actual process of making the food. They view it as a privilege because it can be more difficult to be vegan if you're in certain areas or with a certain income. Which they're right to some extent, fast foods and schools not having healthy vegan options is a big issue. Of course if you can buy and cook your own food you can make it happen but it's more difficult than the vast availability and affordability non vegan foods currently are.

I would like to comment on the subject brought up by the second individual, insects. He stated insects cannot feel that we cannot prove that they can feel. If we cannot prove that they do not feel, then it would be fair to say that we cannot prove that they do feel. That being said I would like to share a personal story that I experienced with insects, this was before I went vegan.
I once bought two scorpions from a pet store, they were Emperor species. One was a male and the other was female. I wasn't aware of their sexes because I didn't know how to tell the difference at the time. I had an enclosure that had real soil, rocks, plants, and a small water fountain. I had two caves I made from rocks. The female stayed in one cave and the male stayed in the other, during the day. At night they both would crawl around outside of the caves looking for food and probably a way to escape. One day I saw the female had several tiny scorpions on her back she gave birth to twenty-two scorplings. I was very excited, when I tried to get a closer look the mother scorpion was very protective, like any mother would be. Eventually I had moved the younger scorpions to a separate enclosure out of fear of cannibalism by the adult scorpions.
One day the female was outside of her cave during the day, I noticed this was strange behavior for a scorpion, I thought maybe she had died. I checked she was still alive, she stayed out in the middle for a week or so, I checked on her daily, until finally one day she was dead. I removed her body from the enclosure. The next day the male scorpion was outside of his cave during the day. I thought wow now he's going to die. He stayed in the same location that the female scorpion was for the next two weeks. I checked on him daily same as I did with the female. Eventually he went back to his cave and he lived for about another year after that. And that's when I realized that he was mourning the female scorpion, to him she was his companion. And why not, they are animals? And to say that insects cannot feel is ignorant. I truly believe that all animals have the ability to feel, and express emotion. Thank you Ed for all that you do. I am proud to say I am vegan for the animals, I have been vegan for 6 1/2 years, and I will never ever go back to using animals. Thanks again, peace.

everyone has financial autonomy...even though we have different levels...it doesn't matter...the cheapest foods that we can buy such as beans, corn, rice, oats, pasta, etc. are vegan...so if we have access to a grocery store, then we can plan and budget accordingly to afford anything that we want that is vegan

I would really advise you to stay away from any seed products (beans, grains, seed oils), instead stick to vegetables, fruit and make sure you get enough fat in (avocado oil, perhaps).
Don't forget your supplements (B-complex, get a DHA omega 3 supplement).
I'm carnivore myself but I understand there are different levels of harmfulness to plants.

    Here's My List:
#1 An appeal to how NATURE operates i.e. the circle-of-life-food-chain argument, "We're at the top of the food chain" is the main argument cited by industry supporters.
#2 An appeal to humans as OMNIVORES, "Do you see these canine teeth right here" and "Our ancestors hunted animals for meat" argument
[Note: A true omnivore can eat flesh without cooking it. Our ancestors ate flesh raw 2.5M - 0.5M years ago, before fire cooking was used. Does this mean we are omnivores? Maybe a soft omnivore]
#3 An appeal to health and NUTRITION, "My doctor told me I need more protein and that meat is a good choice" and "If not from meat then from where are we supposed to get our protein" (whiney ass panzies!) and "Vegans are malnourished" and "We need to eat meat in order to survive" and "Vegans and vegetarians are depressed mentally because they're not getting proper nutrition" argument
#4 An appeal to food preference, TASTE and variety, "Let people eat whatever the hell they want to eat" and "Our taste buds are more valuable than the animal's life that we're eating" and "People want menu variety" argument
#5 An appeal to high level of animal WELFARE / quality of life and humane slaughter methods, Halal and Kosher etc, "We are very respectful to our livestock before we kill them quickly and painlessly" and "Carnivores in the wild show absolutely no compassion whatsoever when they kill their prey, but we do", "We have cage free, organic and free range facilities" and "We give our animals a good life" and "You city folks don't understand how farms operate" argument
#6 An appeal to life-for-food EQUIVALENCE, "The plants you're eating are living things too that suffered and died for you just like slaughtered animals" argument
[Note: The fire dept only rescues people first and animals second in house fires. Plants are left to burn. Why is that?]
#7 An appeal to HABITAT, "If everyone turns vegan then where will we put all these animals" argument
#8 An appeal to EXTINCTION, "Farm animals would go extinct without us in the farming industry" argument
#9 An appeal to RELIGION, "Animals were put here for our use", "Animals are a some thing not a someone" and "People have souls but animals do not" and "It says right here in this here holy book from god that we 're supposed to have dominion over the birds in the air, the fish in the seas and over every thing which creepeth on the lands" argument
#10 An appeal to CULTURE, tradition and history, "We have slaughtered animals for thousands of years since caveman days" and "My parents raised me on meat since I was a child and I just can't live without it" and "We bred livestock animals into existence for our use and that's what they're for" and "I love the feel of real leather in my new car and there's just no substitute" argument
#11 An appeal to RELATIONSHIP, "I have a relationship with my pets but I don't care about the animals that we eat" and "Certain animals are labeled as livestock and that's what they are" argument
#12 An appeal to animal INTELLIGENCE, "These animals aren't even aware of what we are doing to them" and "The animals have very little intelligence, feelings or awareness" argument
[Note: Humans drink the milk and eat the embryonic abortions (eggs) from other species. How smart is that?]
#13 An appeal to small SCALE private fishing, hunting and animal farming or dairy, "I hunt and /or farm my own meat, fish and other animal products so I'm not supporting the industry's mass animal cruelty" and "All we need to do is reduce our consumption of animal products" argument
#14 An appeal to VEGETARIANISM, "As long as we use animal products without killing the animals then there isn't much cruelty involved" and "I only use a tiny amount of dairy creamer in my morning coffee" and "I can give up everything else except cheese" argument
#15 An appeal to EXAGGERATION, "Animal rights activists are blowing the issue of animal exploitation out of proportion since things just aren't that bad" argument
[Note: You're crazy if you think animal exploitation is a non-issue. Of course there are other important issues. They're all important for us to address.]
#16 An appeal to apathy and ABSURDITY, "The animals we're eating have already been killed so what's the big deal if I eat the meat that's already been prepared" and "The animals have no purpose of their own so we might as well use them in whatever way possible" and "we're generously giving animals a shot at life by breeding them into existence which they wouldn't have had otherwise" and "The animals we are eating sacrificed their lives for us" and "Animals don't care if they die" and "As a consumer of animal products I have nothing to do with animal cruelty" and "The animals aren't unhappy with the life we allow them to have" and "What suffering? There isn't any suffering imposed upon the animals. It's just your biased perspective that animals suffer" and "Farming fruits and vegetables kills lots of animals too" argument
#17 An appeal to scientific STUDY, "We need to tag these animals to track their migratory patterns and whereabouts" and "We need to perform extensive lab experiments on animals to improve the quality of human life"
#18 An appeal to a need for SERVICE animals and pets, "The purpose of the animals is to serve human needs for work and or companionship" argument
#19 An appeal to GEOGRAPHY, "I live in a cold climate so it would be nearly impossible for me and my family to live just on vegetables up here" argument
#20 An appeal to subjective OPINION, "It's just your opinion that animal exploitation is bad when it's actually a good thing" argument
#21 An appeal to BREEDING, "Since man bred these animals into existence we own them and can do whatever we want to with them" and "We're doing them a favor otherwise they wouldn't have had the privilege to be alive at all" argument
#22 An appeal to livestock PROTECTION against predators, "Here on the ranch we have to exterminate these dang predators who are preying on our livestock, but don't worry we leave nothing to waste after we kill those varmints" argument
#23 An appeal to HUNTING rights, "I like the way I can bring down large game by stalking my prey with my hunting buddies" and "Hunting is an American way of life" and "I want to beat the animals at their own game of predation, stealth and dominance" argument
#24 An appeal to CONSERVATION and population control efforts, "We have to cull or thin the herd in order to keep the animals healthy" and "We have to manage animal populations otherwise they will spiral out of control" argument
#25 An appeal to PURPOSE, "The purpose of animals is to live a brief life and then die" and "Animals have no purpose of their own" and "Animals are programmed to die from birth" argument
#26 An appeal to price and PRACTICALITY, "It's too expensive and effort-intensive to eat only plants, fruits and vegetables" argument
#27 An appeal to better STANDARDS, "We can make the process of animal agriculture better for humans and animals" argument
#28 An appeal to GENEROSITY, "Farmers are providing people with what they want and you should be thankful for all their hard work in providing this service" argument
#29 An appeal to SATISFACTION, "I just can't get that full feeling in my stomach if I only eat fruits and vegetables" argument
#30 An appeal to FUTILITY, "Even if I personally stop using animal products nothing is going to change because the practice is so widespread" argument
#31 An appeal to REDUCTION, "The secret to good health is to eat less animal products but not stop it altogether" argument

I am stuck at the part where the student says he justifies eating animals because he's okay with Society norms and that it's normal in society and he accepts that. Really? So you don't have your own thoughts? so you don't Forge your own path, no critical thinking question mark because somebody else is doing something it's okay for you to do it? What kind of rationality is that? He thinks you sound smart but he isn't.
