One thing that I found really enjoyable about the fight with Shovel Knight is the way they set up its AI. Instead of having it follow some set pattern like it does with the other knights, Shovel Knight's AI will start off doing somewhat random actions, using the relics in succession, and using the health potions when you inflict enough damage, following which it will react to strategies or patterns that you may be following, like how I liked to use burst jump and spam potions as I floated downwards, Shovel knight responds accordingly countering those patterns making you have change up your strategy. In other words, they got the AI for shovel knight to act like how a player would act when facing the boss for the first time, testing the grounds first with your items, then countering their strategy once you get the flow of how they are playing.
+Athavan Rajasingham Yeah it blows my mind! And how Shovel Knight will use his Ichor to heal, but only once, which is reminiscent of the real game too.
I personally found it cool how he doesn't have any sort of direction either. He stops every once and a while and just stand there, likely changing items. The attention to detail is mind blowing.
He actually runs out of mana eventually and stops using relics entirely, resorting to only using his shovel. These are the kinds of player character boss fights I want to see more often, where they’re still limited by the game’s rules and their own stats.
The ending, the only thing I didn't like is the ending of Plague Of Shadows. It's just not as satisfying as Shovel Knight's ending. POS ending is just... A bit selfish. I didn't save Shield Knight, the Knights are not getting the same treatment as in SK ending.
The two stories aren’t different universes. Yacht said that it’s just unreliable story-telling. Like Plague Knight if claims: “I did beat Shovel Knight but he just got up again and hit me.”
@le Zanji I think you misread that they said that Yatch Club the developers said that it was due to unreliable story telling where shovel knights says he won and plauge knight says he won but shovel knight cheated
Basically, shovel of hope and plague of shadows aren't what actually happened, but what shovel knight/plague knight say happened. Shovel knight of course is a more reliable source so his information is way more accurate
Basically, shovel of hope and plague of shadows aren't what actually happened, but what shovel knight/plague knight say happened. Shovel knight of course is a more reliable source so his information is way more accurate
I loved Plague of Shadows, but if I had to compare both of them, I'd say Shovel Knight had the smoother gameplay while Plague of Shadows had a better story and better characterization. While the different gameplay was pretty cool, going to the menu all the time to change your bombs was kind of clumsy.
Admittedly the 3DS fixes that issue with the switching of the bombs, but since there was no other quick fix implemented in the other versions, it definitely made for a bit more of a stilted experience.
I found platforming way better in Plague of Shadows because of the Screw Attack-like burst and how easily I could fly over enemies. I could focus more on avoiding spikes in Propeller Knight's level than having to worry about the enemies.
"Alternate dimension of sorts, because you actually beat Shovel Knight, and evil is victorious." Yeah, actually, no. Plague of Shadows takes place in the same canon as the base game- when you "beat" Shovel Knight as Plague Knight, Shovel Knight gets back up, sneaks behind you and knocks you silly, thus "defeating" Plague Knight- afterwards, Plague Knight sneaks up on Shovel Knight as he's sleeping at camp and steals his essence, allowing BOTH of them to achieve their goals simultaneously.
+MonarKay I know, I actually talk about that specifically later in the video. I thought that wording would lead to misinterpretation. By "beat", I didn't mean kill Shovel Knight. It definitely is happening at the same time as the original story line, but obviously the ending is different. In an interview, Yacht Club said themselves this is happening in an alternate universe.
+snomaN Gaming If you think about it, Plague a Knight could be the reason that the tower collapsed in Shovel Knight's campaign, so even the endings match up.
Well, I mostly agree, however I must argue a couple points. First, I wouldn't necessarily say that the platforming is more difficult. It has a different difficulty curve than Shovel Knight's, though. SK is easy to learn how to control, and there's really nothing past that, even if you're a long-time platformer. PK, on the other hand, is radically different. I admit to dying over 50 times on the first stage. His movement physics are MUCH harder to learn, and there are quite a few subtle nuances that, when exploited, make the controls LEAGUES easier. But, ultimately, when you've truly mastered the mechanics, he flies through levels with barely any effort (nothing is more cathartic than flying through the Explodatorium). Second, the Float Burst. On one hand, new players should definitely get it ASAP, as it eases the growing pains, but ultimately it's a harmful crutch should you rely on it. I remember Jirard of the Completionist played through Plague of Shadows, and despite being his second playthrough, he still moved like what I'd expect from somebody who hasn't beaten the second group of knights, and I noticed this is primarily due to severe overreliance on the float burst. Finally, tonics. Please let us know you can eventually stash up to 10. Otherwise, great video! Definitely subscribing based on everything I've seen from you. P.S.: Get the game on a Nintendo system if you're playing Plague Knight. Quick item switching was a luxury for Shovel, but is a near necessity for Plague. P.P.S.: The fact that you can charge another burst w/o tossing a bomb was a major point on the website. Take this advice, and, combined with experimenting on which order you burst and double-jump in, can make you unlock the full potential of PK's movement mechanics.
+Papayaman1000 Yeah the movement options he has is absolutely insane. I watched the Plague Knight race at AGDQ this year and it was just mind-blowing to watch. They move so fast! Thank you, glad you enjoyed overall :)
Plague Knight being slow to turn, and his large assortment of potions, bursts and arcana to compensate, means you always have to plan your move, more so than rely on reflexes. If you always choose the right type of bomb, it almost feels like you are cheating when fighting enemies. Each one is weak to a different combo. Just illustrates what Plague Knight meant with his "superior intellect" that he rubs in Shovel Knights face. ♘
Just beat both games, and they definitely live up to the hype. I think I prefer Plague of Shadows because Plague Knight's campaign is just a lot funnier than Shovel Knight's.
But *SPOILERS* Evil wasn't victorious. Plague Knight just wanted to impress a girl, and he eventually blows up the Enchantress' tower and saves the country.
I can't believe I just found this! You beautifully summed up why I love Plague of Shadows so much. I think I'd give it the nod over the original Shovel Knight, but luckily, we don't have to choose, and together, I'm comfortable calling it one of the best platformers of all time. Like you described, it took me quite a while to feel comfortable with Plague, but once I did, playing as him became one of the most satisfying gaming experiences I can remember. It's just brilliant, and it needs more people intelligently spreading the love like you! (Incidentally, I've seen you around DK Vine, where I go by Reed. Love your stuff!)
Oh hey Reed! Yeah great to see you here :) Yeah, it was just an awesome expansion and so much detail was put into it. I'm super pumped for King/Plague Knight campaigns!
My big gripe with Plague of Shadows was that, as you said, Plague Knight is better at combat and worse at platforming, yet the levels had a ton of platforming and relatively little combat. Considering how drastic the changes between the knights' movesets are, the changes in the levels felt too minor to accomodate the new moveset.
+〈-thatguyoverthere Yeah, it would've been cool to see more combat-centric scenarios. Hopefully with the other characters we will see some cool variety!
Gotta admit, playing Plague Knight feels like playing Mega Man, but tosses his attacks and is a lot more agile. Still haven't finished this game, but I love every minute of it, even those small details.
Plague of Shadows is easily one of my favorite expansions of all time. You hit all the good points! (Plus, man, that reward for getting all the Cipher Coins changes the game even more, it's great.) Curious to see what they'll do with King and Spectre. I've heard people speculating that Spectre will have Castlevania: SotN elements, but not sure how that'd fit in Shovel Knight...
+SkyeTheEnglishGamer Oh man! Im really interested to see it now, I actually didn't get the special bonus for getting all the coins yet. Yeah! The new campaigns have me even more excited now, to see how they'll change it even more!
+SkyeTheEnglishGamer A part of me wonders if they'll have Spectre knight flying or floating during the game or if they'll have him in that basic armour and scythe form you see him take when you take of his cloak after beating him
I just played through Plague of Shadows for the first time and I must say that I liked it way more than the actual Shovel Knight campaign! Can't wait for Specter Knight next year :)
OK I know Yacht Club Game may of said Alternate Time Line but I personally believe that they both happened in the same timeline it just that Plague Knight got to each Area First and Shovel Knight Followed Right behind him. And Honestly it makes the whole the Tower Exploding Scene make Much more Sense in Shovel Knight being Plague Knight Blew it up with the Potion.
Another thing I REALLY liked about Plague of Shadows was about that room you ran into just before fighting Shovel Knight at the Explodatorium, the one that doesn't show up in the other Campaign. It's obviously Plague Knight's room, but if you throw a bomb at the closet, the door breaks and you see a whole bunch of Plague Knight's masks... Including a bigger one, more akin to the Sprite he had during Shovel of Hope. They never retconned his design. Plague Knight just wears stilts and a bigger mask to look taller than Shovel Knight. And THAT is why I love Yacht Club. Taking changes and giving genuine reasons for them instead of just retconning it-
Plague of Shadows was so much more fun to me. His floaty nature felt so amazing to control + the amount of customizable things made me feel so smart, when i used certain combinations to take out specific enemies. Also - Plague Knight's character is so charming.
I find that I like Plague Knight and Spector Knight more than Shuffle Knight by a large margin. Their variety is just superb, and you can use many stuffs without restraint. Spector Knight is harder to control but he's super cool, plus his story is very good too.
I played Shovel Knight on my Switch back in 2018. I never tried the later games and I really don't know why. I decided to watch this review and after playing through Plague Knight it's certainly not as good as I remember Shovel Knight being but it's so different that I enjoyed it nonetheless. Yacht Club created a brilliant game and I'm excited to play Spectre Knight and King Knight.
Hi snomaN, this is the first video Ive seen by you! Your really good you've earned a sub! Anyways, I'm going with the original Shovel Knight because Plague of shadows is WAY to hard! Let alone playing it on Game+ HARDEST SPEEDRUN EVER! But, I do still love both versions Shovel Knight to me is just better!
Shovel Knight will always go down in history to me as one of, if not THE best platformer of all time. And it's not even finished yet! Can't wait for Specter of Torment coming in March.
I don't own the game, so I only have reviews and Let's Plays to go by, but Plague Knight's campaign looks A LOT easier to me than Shovel Knight's. With Shovel Knight, I was watching while thinking "Man, how the fuck would I ever beat this fucking boss?", and I think some of the platforming looked really hard, too. With Plague Knight, I was thinking "Yeah, I could do that! I can choose the right loadout for this boss and decimate him! I could do that platforming bit with all the jumps I get!", it just looked so much intuitive and easy for me. I wanna buy this gaaaaame~
While I like the new animation, stories and charm of Plague of Shadows, I don't like how Plague Knight controls and the gameplay is what connects me to a game the most . I stopped playing at the Exploditorium as well. Shovel Knight felt great and got better. The more I played Plague of Shadows, I realized that I was playing it not because it was fun, but because I felt it was going to get fun later. Adding a character that is by design far more difficult to control is not my idea of a good time. I love Shovel Knight, but I'll pass on Plague of Shadows. Great video, BTW. Love your game design series! :)
Plague of Shadows turned my off at first because it made me a salty scrub, but it turned out to be a really great expansion. I loved how Plague Knight has a lot more movement potential than Shovel Knight, and it was interesting to see how different tactics worked better for different bosses. But I think my favorite thing about the DLC is that it made me feel like I was playing Shovel Knight for the first time again. It was familiar enough, but when it turned itself on it's head, it really screwed with me. By the way, this may not be useful to you, but there is actually a cheat code to unlock Plague of Shadows without beating the original Shovel Knight. Press and hold the attack button on the title screen; enter Up, Up, Left, Down, Right, Right; and release the attack button. Then boom. You have an easier way to get Plague Knight if you own the game for multiple platforms.
+ChrisTheFields Yeah that was my biggest surprise too! I was worried it would just be more of the same, but it made me feel like I was diving in for the first time too! I remember you (and me both!) getting salty at first lol. Thats awesome, I knew there was a code, but I didn't know it was like, a cheat code lol awesome! Yacht Club is just so great
I remember fighting specter knight like 30 times before finally beating him and then in the boss rush on the final level he seemed like the easiest boss ( in regular campaign , not in plague of shadows )
The very first time I played shovel knight, I played on friend's switch and did plague of shadows first. This campaign is easier once you get the hang of it. Tonics make health easy, almost every boss is super easy, and platforming is different. I have to say though, the explodatorium fight IS VERY CHALLENGING the first time through. With only 5 hearts, not much arcana, and pretty much basic bombs, this fight proved to be more difficult (for me) than the final fight. Of course, I was way better by the time I reached the final fight.
"Man, this I was having such a great time! Too bad there's not too much content other than achievment getting... Oh, what's this ? A free update/DLC/expansion? With just as much content as Shovel Knight campaign? That solves all of my problems :D ...oooh, they're making another one? And possibly another one? ...wow." Seriously though, the lack of content was the only thing keeping me from calling this game perfect. Now it is, at least in my eyes.
Beating Shovel Knight left me with mixed feelings. The story was ok, but sometimes the game felt like it was designed to tilt me. I kinda heisted on starting the Plague of Shadows and boy I’m glad I did. The second playthrough with Plague Knight was a blast. All the cool details, actually wholesome story, much more freedom of movement and great upgrades. Yeah, I loved it. P.S.Mona best girl
Hey man, great video! I found plague knight really frustrating to play at first but I'm inspired to give it another go! What do you use to record your videos? Awesome quality!
+ryuseifudo Thanks! Yeah I felt the same way, it was really hard to get used to, but by the end it was an incredible game :) I use OBS to record PC footage, it works great and is free!
So, when I played shovel knight, the entire time I was thinking his personality was super lacking compared to the other characters, he felt like a generic protagonist. Then I realized that was the point and it blew my mind.
Just beaten both the main game and Plague of Shadows. For me, Shovel Knight's gameplay had fantastic flow and is executed in interesting ways without making things too complicated. Plague Knight meanwhile kinda forces you to slow down and consider the vast options you have at your disposal. Even though they share the same fundamentals, the overall flow and thinking process that goes into each character is very different. So I can't really say that one is better than the other. For me personally, I kinda prefer Shovel Knight's gameplay, but I really enjoyed how Plague Knight played as well.
Personally, I'm hoping that they'll eventually let us play as Black Knight, that he would control alot like Shovel Knight, only that the levels and boss fights would be more difficult than in Shovel of Hope (sort of like a harder version of "Shovel of Hope"), and that the setting would take place shortly after "Shovel of Hope", with Black Knight trying to convince each of the Order of No Quarter's various members to disband as part of his quest for vengeance against the Enchantress, whom possesses Shield Knight once more in her nefarious plan to manipulate Shovel Knight and rebuild the Tower of Fate. They could call this DLC "Shovel of Twilight".
Haha that would be cool, personally I would love a Shield Knight campaign! The shield mechanic could be really cool. But, I think all we're gonna get is King Knight and then they'll move onto a new IP (which I'm totally okay with!)
I remember playing this a ton! I loved all of the bursts you could use! (I only used the combonation bomb because it fits any situation) And the ending made me tear up, it's so cute!!! (also, did you know what happens if you try to dance at the final boss?)
Fun fact: Plague of Shadows is set in an entirely new universe, meaning that Shovel Knight’s & Plague Knight’s campaign are set in different universes so that means the PoS is not canon even though it should.

It's not in an alternate universe, Plague Knight almost beats Shovel Knight, but is stopped.Only when Plague Knight finds Shovel Knight sleeping does he get Shovel Knight's essence
Actually, I found you needed money more in Plague of Shadows than in the OG Shovel Knight. Those bomb upgrades do not come cheap and there are lots of them. Once you get use to switching upgrades on the fly Plague Knight is a lot like Batman and all his "wonderful toys".
am I the only one that's sad that we aren't going to get a black knight dlc beause that guy has quite a bit of unexplored lore. we get touches but I neeeed more. I do like how they went for the other characters who don't have any sort of story or arc.
Well to be fair, they are only doing the ones that the fans voted for in the kickstarter, and back then we didn't know anything about them other than the design. so people just picked the ones they thought looked the coolest
One thing that I found really enjoyable about the fight with Shovel Knight is the way they set up its AI. Instead of having it follow some set pattern like it does with the other knights, Shovel Knight's AI will start off doing somewhat random actions, using the relics in succession, and using the health potions when you inflict enough damage, following which it will react to strategies or patterns that you may be following, like how I liked to use burst jump and spam potions as I floated downwards, Shovel knight responds accordingly countering those patterns making you have change up your strategy. aaa1e2r3 The ending is honestly the best!
I love how Plague Knight will shyly tap his fingers together instead of dancing if you press down near to the potions lady,
Mona, her name is Mona
That was the part that sold me on his character.
He’s like a medieval after school special protagonist. (˵ ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°˵)
Or in the final fight (no spoilers)
DE NAME IS MONA
The ending was so fucking adorable.
So cute right?!
Yeah. I was totally fangirling the couple and I'm not even a girl.
Same here, it made suffering through Tinker/Propeller Knight's stages way more worth it.
This is the only time I've ever found a couple I genuinely cared about in a video game.
The ending, the only thing I didn't like is the ending of Plague Of Shadows.
It's just not as satisfying as Shovel Knight's ending. POS ending is just... A bit selfish.
I didn't save Shield Knight, the Knights are not getting the same treatment as in SK ending.
i like how he said that he loved all the little things but didnt mention that the particles that oolong shoots out depend on the powder of the bomb
That's even more awesome! lol

I guess I'll just have to get started on Plague Knight, the DLC looks awesome. Great comparison video :)
+KlausGaming Thanks! I know I said it in the video, but I can't recommend it enough
Specter Knight on Plauge of Shadows took me 2+ hours.
+Erik Cassel Dude it changes the whole game! It's hard lol
still crossing my fingers and praying for that shield knight campaign yacht club pls
Not happening unfortunately..
Taking changes and giving genuine reasons for them instead of just retconning it-
Spectre of Torment looks rad, and I'll be sold on King Knight's campaign so long as I can kill enemies with confetti.
Hey, you can
i love the shovelknight-timeline when it comes to plague knight. like the theorys you can make for the bossrush
If there was King Knight DLC:
Shovel Knight: King of Nothing
King Knight: The Super Asshole
Plague of Shadows was so much more fun to me. His floaty nature felt so amazing to control + the amount of customizable things made me feel so smart, when i used certain combinations to take out specific enemies. Also - Plague Knight's character is so charming.
dude, i can't wait for king knight. long live the king!
Me either! So hyped for the last of the DLC!
I'm waiting for spectre knight ;-;
Can't wait for king of cards
Wow, this isn't even a genre I play but I'm so happy the original game did so well and that this exists! Right on!
It was a blast playing as plague knight.
nice! i didnt know we were getting dlc for all the others!
+Ben Smith Yeah! Im so hyped!
Should definitely bring this intro song back
I find that I like Plague Knight and Spector Knight more than Shuffle Knight by a large margin.
Their variety is just superb, and you can use many stuffs without restraint.
Spector Knight is harder to control but he's super cool, plus his story is very good too.
I am so goddamn excited for Specter of Torment, you guys.
SAME SAME SAME
Polar knight looks awesome. I want so badly to know his backstory!
I would love a Polar Knight story!
Great video. Did NOT know about holding down. Holy balls.
Plague Knight really just is my favorite campaign.
And then the specter of torment trailer came out and it looks even better
Seriously, I am SO HYPED
plague knight=plague doctor+cute kitty
Hi snomaN, this is the first video Ive seen by you! Your really good you've earned a sub! Anyways, I'm going with the original Shovel Knight because Plague of shadows is WAY to hard! Let alone playing it on Game+ HARDEST SPEEDRUN EVER! But, I do still love both versions Shovel Knight to me is just better!
Haha yeah Plague is definitely harder :P Glad you enjoyed, thanks!
The title makes it sound like they're two different games
Shovel Knight will always go down in history to me as one of, if not THE best platformer of all time. And it's not even finished yet! Can't wait for Specter of Torment coming in March.
You named your plague knight the exact same name I had for mine. Like, best coincidence, holy shit.
Plague Knight Campaign is fantastic. I'm playing Spectre of Torment now. It's great so far.
I wanna buy this gaaaaame~
shovel knight is better, since he beat plague knight on both encounters...
Plague Knight is best boi, and that’s final.
+Mike Crichlow Yeah I do understand, it definitely is vastly different from the original. Glad you enjoy the GGD series :) Thanks for watching :D
I just want the Polar and/or Propellor knight campaigns
That solves all of my problems :D
...oooh, they're making another one?
And possibly another one?
...wow."
Seriously though, the lack of content was the only thing keeping me from calling this game perfect.
Now it is, at least in my eyes.
+Cezary Dudkiewicz Yeah it just makes me appreciate Yacht Club more and more, they just get it ya know?
I absolutely love your videos! Keep up the good work!
I found Plague of Shadows frustrating and actually stopped on the 3rd level. But this convinced me to revisit it.
The winner to me is spectre knight oh my God the gameplay is smooth as butter. And more badass than the most badass of butters.
5:27 That song. It's sad.
I want the phantom striker to get his own campaign but if not I’m still thankful for what we have
dude just thinking about the upcoming dlcs for this came makes me so fucking M O I S T
6:40 okay
thats just adorable
I remember playing this a ton! I loved all of the bursts you could use! (I only used the combonation bomb because it fits any situation)
And the ending made me tear up, it's so cute!!!
(also, did you know what happens if you try to dance at the final boss?)
No I didn't try the dance at the final boss haha! What happens?
snomaN Gaming Well, since it's actually Mona, Plague Knight is shy, even when it looks nothing like Mona. It was a great detail
wow thats pretty cool
a spectre knight campain?
now this is going to be fun...
i love the plague knight dance animation
How the hell can you choose?! They were both great, it's like choosing between your equally successful children!
Yeah they both do amazing things with what they are, and are so different from each other. I can't wait for the rest of the DLC :)
Shovel Knight blew me away ... but plague of shadows on the 3ds was absolutely amazing it should of been the lunch title
Fun fact: Plague of Shadows is set in an entirely new universe, meaning that Shovel Knight’s & Plague Knight’s campaign are set in different universes so that means the PoS is not canon even though it should.
Damn snoman didn't see that coming! Lol
I cant wait for specter of torment where you play as specter knight
YEAH SAME
I really want a black night campaign
Loved the video, not originally a sub, but I am now!
+avery dotts Awesome thank you so much :D
snomaN Gaming Yup,loving most of your content so far.
I got way to addicted to the story towards the end...
So much more to wait for!
Ah so I WASNT the only one who thought staff of surging looked like shoyuken
Magic? This isn't magic, this is *alchemy!*
So excited for the new dlc
SAME SAME SAME
such a great game. I can't wait for more dlc!
Yeah! Sounds like they are bringing the next two together!
Well there goes my two weeks when that comes out then!
Have you seen Specter Knight and King Knight? They are freakin' fabulous! :D
+StygianTraveler141 no, you got a link?!

Speaking of holding down to dance, has anybody tried that around Mona? Now that's great attention to detail.
I KNOW RIGHT!? So cute.
My favorite part is the secret door in King Knight's castle though. He balances a potion on his foot. rofl.
Man there's so many little things like that it's amazing!
Yeah, it would be cool to fly around with him and stuff.
where was the "versus"?
Is it different...? Okay, I go stand in the corner now.
