Not only does it retain the charm and polish of the previous two campaigns, but the story is much bolder in its decisions, really bringing out the hard emotions. No joke, I almost teared up at the final scene in the game.

I honestly like SPector of Torment more than the main game. I just really like the new movement and progressions through levels. I also feel that the level design is a lot better this time around, cutting back on gimics and again having that great movement to make the gimics more bearable. Lastly, although the bosses are much easier I find them much more fun and the fencer boss in the graveyard, although easy was one of the most fun bosses I've ever fought. I just wish I liked the actual level more.
Yeah, they're getting progressively better at level design and storytelling, but i think i liked Plague of Shadows more simply because you could experiment with the explosives and it gave you much more freedom to choose how you wanted to kill the enemies. Plus, it has alchemy, you cannot beat alchemy.

i absolutely LOVED specter, it was one of the most fun experiences ive ever had with a video game. i really need to go back and finish NG+ and the challenges though.
I absolutely ADORE Specter of Torment, and thank you for bringing up "In the Halls of the King!" I mentioned in my LP that it's actually one of my favorite music changes in SoT because it's just so damn clever!
Yachtclub really is an amazing developer, seeing so many projects with similar scope and budget crash and burn, this game just seems more like a miracle every day.
Excellent work as usual, dude! You hit the nail on the head: Yacht Club is doing amazing work. It'd just be nice if consumers and other aspiring indy devs alike would recognize that this game (considering the entirety of Shovel Knight and its expansions), while certainly taking inspiration from classic games, is successful because it is brilliantly designed in its own right. So many indy games bank on nostalgia and call it a day. Something about the way Plague Knight plays clicked with me just a bit more than Specter (though it was much harder to learn), so I have a slight preference for the alchemist, but I have no complaints about Specter, and eagerly await the arrival of the King!
Ahh, you can't help but love what Yacht Club Games have done for us with this game - it's the gift that keeps on giving!! My personal favourite little touch is how they decided since Shovel Knight breaks blocks by digging _down_ with his shovel, they made Spectre Knight break items by jumping _up_ off them - a really nice symmetry with some really interesting consequences to some of the platforming challenges
Ngl I like Specter of Torment more than normal Shovel Knight, the abilities used for fast and difficult gameplay, the new boss phases, and the incredible story with an ending that ties in with the main one, it’s incredible.
I am very surprised that you did not mention how this game explained ridiculously small details. Specter of Torment even explains ridiculously small details. Like in the ending sequence the flying swords were still being built, (in Tinker Knight's level), explaining why they were not being built, and how we don't see the ships in Propeller Knight's stage because he sent them out in the ending sequence. And how we don't have King Knight's battle in Specter of Torment in the other campaigns, because he turned the entire castle into gold. And there is so much more! Am I the only one who was noticing these tiny details.
There's also the dancing lady we could see as Shovel Knight in the first town, who actually ran away from the Tower of Fate because Specter didn't pay attention to her.
If You get all of those skull's to red, he takes You to the place where Donavan died and gives You his old armor and the spike thingy. Also when You rail grind with that, You actually bend over a bit since Specter uses his old weapon and when You press down, he starts dancing and when You are close to the Mimic cat, he pets it instead. Also if You break one of those Lamps in the same room when those Knight enemies are under it he turns into a specific Knight type of the levels But if You don't stop there, the helmet breaks and reveals that it's a dragon.
I wish Yacht Club Studios would finish up the trilogy and release King Knight's campaign already, i'm already hyped up as fuck from playing through Specter Knight's and Plague Knight's campaigns.

Easily the best campaign of the three: the story was tragic but hopeful, the soundtrack has improved versions of the previous OST and the gameplay is the most fun and fast of the three; and I feel bad because I did not even had to pay for it.
Can't wait for King's Knight campaign, and hopefully Shovel Man sometime in the future. They released a poll a while ago asking what people wanted them to make next and "A Megaman" like game was one of the options. They also proposed a Mario Kart like game, which i think would kick ass, but for now a Megaman spiritual successor sounds great. Plus, Yacht Club showed they're really good at platformers and level design.

And I will probably begin with speedrunning on this game as the Gameplay feels perfectly fluid to me and it fits in everything for me what you said in your tipps for befinning to speedrun And this game really has a sad story and I can still like every character (Not including the enchantress) in it althought they choose to follow the enchantress espiacially as I know they got kinda forced to do it and I am really hoping for something more about Polar Knight as he just seems like he is the one who would follow the enchantress the least And Yacht Club Games showed again they can make a story in that short of a game which is just as full as a whole 2 hour movie... yet not a book that can't be done

I also like the way they handled "hard mode." They combined you life and magic meters (I forgot what they are called in game) and made it slowly deplete. This way you truly feel like a grim reaper harvesting the souls of the enemies you kill to stay alive. It also makes the magic abilities mush more risk reward.
I really do need to play it, unfortunately I bought Shovel Knight for 3DS in the UK, which means it arrives June 1st and is therefore a whole 3 months after it's release on the Nintendo Switch
man I agree with you. in Plague of shadows, they use same platform they used for Shovel knight. so using Plague knight's ability on Shovel knight's stages is like using PS2 disc on Xbox1. and also in Spector of torment. it's shows that how stuff is changing from good to bad and worse. So this game is deserve more respect from the gamers, and also the Boss fights are rearrenged as better system. and Stages too in Spector of Torment. because it's his game. so they make it look more like his game.

About that wall jumping mechanic - I had a real hard time getting that you need to hold key towards the wall to jump in opposite dirrection. It was realy stressful especially at the last climb in the tower challenge. After some intense platforming shit (like do or die, mofo!) the last part was just climb jumping from wall to wall and my brain was so stressed that it didnt get any sense from the climing mechanic that I almost died at the very end of that challenge.
This game is awesome ! I bought it on Switch at launch but put it down after 2 levels because Zelda came in. I came back to this game 2 days ago and at the Final Boss now. Awesome game with awesome music ! Awesome bosses as well! That Ice Viking fight was hard for me but I did beat that boss. Now im at the very end boss. This game is so cool!😁
I agree on everything in this video... BUT This game lacks 2 things I would have loved to see return from the first 2 games: All the boss battles: because this game doesn't have Shovel Knight in it (he could have been in a flashback at least), Baz is just a bunch of text boxes (and we still don't know who gave him lightning power) and the hat merchant too... although I care less about him... I guess they could have brought back the villages and the art gallery as well... especially since the second-one is haunted! The boss rush! Because that was one of the most satisfying part of both Shovel Knight and Plague of Shadows: beating the crap out of the whole game's cast in one go. That said, I really like how every stage brought at least 2 new gimmicks to the table, the tower race mini-game, everything about the controls, the new game + (I'm surprised you didn't talk about it! It's a really well thought concept that makes for an interesting playthrough in which going faster leaves you with more Will/Darkness to finish the level).
Neat! The bomb-jumping for Plague Knight admittedly turned me off, but this sounds much more engaging... though I figure I should tackle both eventually.
I loved this DLC there was a lot of wow moments in it for me. However the reason why I prefer plague of shadows (haven't decided if I enjoy shovel of hope more) over this one is how plague of shadows made u play the same levels but in different ways. Of course the same levels a third time through may get stale but like in Plague of Shadows there was little special areas just for Plague knight. A good compromise between old and new was to have the levels with both of those parts in it. For example in King Knights stage the first part of the stage was like the other campaigns but once I got to the magic book section instead of summoning platforms there would be a ladder that would lead to a new part of the level
Spectre was the first dlc I played after I beat it I wanted to 100% it and so I did believe in yourself you can 100% the game by adopting the game style

About that wall jumping mechanic - I had a real hard time getting that you need to hold key towards the wall to jump in opposite dirrection. It was realy stressful especially at the last climb in the tower challenge. After some intense platforming shit (like do or die, mofo!) the last part was just climb jumping from wall to wall and my brain was so stressed that it didnt get any sense from the climing mechanic that I almost died at the very end of that challenge.
Curios are probably one of my favorite things in the game. They’re so unique and fun to use.
This game is awesome ! I bought it on Switch at launch but put it down after 2 levels because Zelda came in. I came back to this game 2 days ago and at the Final Boss now. Awesome game with awesome music ! Awesome bosses as well! That Ice Viking fight was hard for me but I did beat that boss. Now im at the very end boss. This game is so cool!😁

I agree on everything in this video...
BUT
This game lacks 2 things I would have loved to see return from the first 2 games:
All the boss battles: because this game doesn't have Shovel Knight in it (he could have been in a flashback at least), Baz is just a bunch of text boxes (and we still don't know who gave him lightning power) and the hat merchant too... although I care less about him... I guess they could have brought back the villages and the art gallery as well... especially since the second-one is haunted!
The boss rush! Because that was one of the most satisfying part of both Shovel Knight and Plague of Shadows: beating the crap out of the whole game's cast in one go.
That said, I really like how every stage brought at least 2 new gimmicks to the table, the tower race mini-game, everything about the controls, the new game + (I'm surprised you didn't talk about it! It's a really well thought concept that makes for an interesting playthrough in which going faster leaves you with more Will/Darkness to finish the level).
oh MAN I didn't even try out NG+ yet, guess I have to now :P
I watched this game a few years ago on game grumps and it's my favourite game the lore of Specter knight is just so good

Neat! The bomb-jumping for Plague Knight admittedly turned me off, but this sounds much more engaging... though I figure I should tackle both eventually.

I loved this DLC there was a lot of wow moments in it for me. However the reason why I prefer plague of shadows (haven't decided if I enjoy shovel of hope more) over this one is how plague of shadows made u play the same levels but in different ways. Of course the same levels a third time through may get stale but like in Plague of Shadows there was little special areas just for Plague knight. A good compromise between old and new was to have the levels with both of those parts in it. For example in King Knights stage the first part of the stage was like the other campaigns but once I got to the magic book section instead of summoning platforms there would be a ladder that would lead to a new part of the level
When I sliced that giant cannonball in half, I was like daaaamn.
Spectre was the first dlc I played after I beat it I wanted to 100% it and so I did believe in yourself you can 100% the game by adopting the game style
It's also cool that the 3ds and vita version is updsted as well

Yes i know Luan gave it to him but considering how ownership has changed hands many times now: Luan > Spectre Knight > Plague Knight > Shovel Knight. I'm wondering if we will learn even in some sort of passing reference as to where Luan got it. I cant recall if he said it was a family heirloom or just something he bought or whatever.

I love how it the original game, you think something happened when Baz was rejected from the Order, but it pans out more like: "I wanna join you!" "no" "oh."
The grey specter knight costume reminds me of the cleavers from skulduggery Pleasant if anyone has read that.
well i beated a normal run,Specter X run,Specter X plus run,Naked (No Health or Darkness upgrades) Specter Knight run.

Yes. Yes you should buy Specter of Torment. Whenever a game's story makes me cry, it becomes the game of the year to me. I rarely cry. When something makes me cry you know it's good.
