What I really appreciate about Shovel Knight, is that it doesn't misuse blindly the nostalgia for "old-school design". A lot of people misremember old-school design anyway. For example, people tend to think of the first Legend of Zelda as this obtuse game that doesn't tell you anything ("and that's why it's good dammit!"), totally forgetting the fact that each copy came with a MANUAL that would explain the backstory and all enemies and even have hints for finding all dungeons (and also a straight out walkthrough for the first two!), and that was the primary source of knowledge that would spread around between players. The important point is that the game didn't try to be obtuse, it's just not everything could be put within the game. And many retro games misremember this kind of stuff, so for example they design something that deliberately hides information and makes discovery frustrating and it's like... why? And what I really appreciate about Shovel Knight is that it is inspired by old-school design, but doesn't follow many misconceptions about old-school design, you know, and is actually really modern in terms of... well, pretty much everything, which is what makes it such a well-received retro-styled game. It takes all the good old-school philosophies but implements them with the modern-style finesse.
Exactly. They recognise what worked and what didn't, as well as the limitations of the time. The palette is made to resemble styles brought about by early hardware restrictions, but isn't actually restricted. The soundtrack is similar in this way as well, using retro instruments but without the need to limit the actual content of the music. The gameplay feels much smoother than older games, but seems like what they were aiming to achieve. It's everything that retro games *could've* been, not everything that retro games *were*.
Honestly, not including second quest, the only part of Zelda 1 I would call that obtuse is the entry to dungeon 7, and even then the game does leave you some hints and I've seen one person work out how to get in on their own.

What's interesting to note is that the arrows on the joustus cards mirror the enemy's movement. For instance, the divedrake (the small green dragon enemy) primarily moves up and down, and it's card only had arrows pointing up and down
The best part of King of Cards in my opinion is the fact that since there are hidden exits to some stages (and the fact that where you go if you find the secret exit for a level is already marked on the map before you find it) that means that if you really wanted to you can skip the later Joustus Houses if you want to. You can even take alternate paths and make each repeated playthrough of King of Cards unique and interesting which I love 😍! Yacht Club definitely inspires me to make my own levels and I'm not surprised that it basically started an Indie game Renaissance.
I literally thought to myself yesterday " I wonder if king of cards is out yet" to find out it just released this week - I've been playing non stop since. Yacht Club has really made it worth the wait, and I can't wait to see what they do next.
I like Propeller Knight and I wished he had his own campaign. He has the most charming personality of all the knights IMO and I imagined his core mechanic is built around flying or gliding. But after I played King of Cards, I really appreciate their effort of making a fun game. Thank you, Yacht Club Games!
what about black knight, he seam to linked with many characters in previous games. I wish to know more about his story as well as his story with shovel knight, sheild knight and polar knight. Well black knight gamplay and moveset woudl be similar to shovel knight except he jumps higher and when he digs it hurts enemeis just like his boss fight
@@boserboser6870if they were going with black knight we couldve explored the lore before the events with the enchantress and tower of fate kinda like shovel knight dig we could have even faced bosses from dig like drill knight scrap knight hive knight and spore knight as black knight
Now, joustus was fun, but I found that the joustus house bosses often hurt themselves with their attacks. Destroying gems that they had claimed, destroying rows that only had their own cards, etc. I seriously want joustus online multiplayer though. The game is awesome and would be great with friends.
I'm devastated that my favorite game series has finally come to its grand finale, but I'm thrilled that I was able to follow it from start to finish, and I can't wait to jump into whatever Yacht Club thinks up next. This video has been wonderful, and a beautiful goodbye to the gift that is Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove.
yacht club said in a recent interview done at jan 30th I think they wanna make shovel knight games forever and ever if you want to fact check me just search shovel knight games forever you will find the podcast where they said that and lots of articles
I really wanna see a Shovel Knight 2, if only to see more boss stories. King of Cards was so good that now I'm yearning even more for my original dream of a Propeller or Treaure Knight campaign. It'll probably be a long while before we see something else Shovel Knight again though, honestly.
They said on an interview they want to keep making shovel knight games forever (podcast is called nintedo power house I think if you want to fact check Anyway just search shovel knight games forever and you will find it)I don't know what they are gonna do but maybe more shovel knight Idk
I appreciate Yacht Club so much for giving us this incredible game, the king knight DLC is debatably the best of the 4 stories. I can’t wait to see what they do next.
Hey dude, speaking of indie games I'd like you to cover Hyper Light Drifter one day. You DID mention it in your 2016 Game Awards but I feel like it deserves more respect.
The end of treasure trove, but shovel knight dig looks excellent, and I'm looking forward to that and any other projects yacht club games has in the future
Man, I finished Shovel Knight back in early 2015 I guess. Never realized the game expanded that much! I will re-download it, but I also hope that Yacht Club explore new niches/concepts
One of the best video game values of all time. Can’t believe all of this content stemmed from (and is completely free for those who purchased) the original campaign back in 2014, and now a game that did nostalgia right spawns nostalgia itself. It was a long wait for this final update but it was more than worth it. I’m glad they took the time to make it the grand finale Shovel Knight deserved.
I made my own Joustus cards and table and have been playing it with my friends at school. Jesus christ is Joustus good, they REALLY need to make a physical card hame!
Damm that sounds fun. Do you have like 3 or so tables? Dig ones, Cementery ones and Standar ones? Also how do you put the gems? Some sheetd where they should be or you just «throw them» into the table and leave them wherever they land?
I got all of the Showdown feats I main Treasure Knight in showdown... he’s a powerful Zoner “Be prepared to lose some of your favourites as you proceed”... you can’t lose them if you don’t use them... I literally just use the basic 4 cards
Eventually I would like a campaign for more of the various knights, even if it's several years away, but honestly I'm really excited for anything else they might do
Man this was an awesome interview and video! Well done!! Super looking forward to playing this! The fact that Shovel Knight Showdown has a campaign mode is super cool to me!
Ay great video, but I think you undersold King Knight and how he controls and his abilities compared to the other characters. His shoulder barge and spin are simultaneously very simple and very complex; the lack of high mobility like spectre means you have to think a little more about platforming, making it more overall like a puzzle platformer like Wario Land. But the cool thing is that you still have a whole heap of mobility options from the various upgrades, so if you want you can traverse the levels in a whole bunch of different ways instead as most of the upgrades are mobility based. It gives you a huge amount of player choice in that regard, and encourages you to experiment. The Armors, especially the Silver and Green armors, let you experiment *even more* with mobility options as well. It’s like a sandbox type thing where you can create all sorts of different wacky ways to traverse levels and make your own routes. I haven’t seen anyone else talking about this and I think it’s one of the things that make this DLC absolutely fucking incredible
Man, I used to hate shovel knight (except specter of torment), but now that I've experienced king of cards and showdown, I've heaps more love towards these games.
Man this is nuts. I just randomly thought of Shovel KNight again and looked if King Knight is finally out and look at that! Really really cool dev studio with an amazing game! I can't wait to play the new DLCs. I would have played a seperate campaign for ALL the knights and I'm kinda sad it ends here but Yacht Club will probably keep up the good work.
This was a great video! And I absolutely love joustus it is so good! It's sad that the shovel knight saga came to end, but I'll gladly wait to see what yachtclubgames is going to do next
Seeing how much love Shovel Knight has gotten these past few years has me exicted to see what Yacht Club's next project is going to be. Whatever it is i'm sure it's going to be chock full of heart
So are we all just gonna ignore that Joustus is really similar to that one board game from Skylanders? Also would like to mention that this update is my favorite. Showdown is one of my favorite multiplayer games ever, and King of Cards is, by far, my favorite campaign I’ve been playing through.
I really love the normal gameplay so far, it's very unique, and I constantly die because my brain isn't used to the mechanics yet... even after a few hours already. I'd say I still enjoyed Specter Knight more, but Joustus is probably what will make me end up loving this mode the most. I'm not even halfway through the game, just arrived at the second Joustus house, and it's so fun. I'm normally not a fan of games where you have to think ahead, or puzzles... or just... think in general. But this one somehow magically got me addicted. And while I haven't gotten a single gem sweep for like... the entire first section of the game, I'm rolling them now more often and often. It's magic.
Game looks good. It is cool to see how the developers were able to build four independent titles...while keeping the gameplay fresh and familiar in each one.
I would just like to take this opportunity to say that King of Cards is my favourite campaign of the bunch. It's not too combat-heavy, instead putting its focus on puzzle-solving and tricky platforming challenges, and after damn near losing my mind in Shovel of Hope's nerve-wracking final boss (and everything else, because I'm bad at retro-style games) it was a nice way for me to wind down and enjoy some slower-paced, strategic gameplay. I'm not very far into it right now - as I'm writing this I've only just completed the first main area - but I'm certainly enjoying it so far, and the clips you showed of all the other levels have me pretty excited for what's to come. Oh yeah, and there's also Joustus. I'll be honest and say I didn't expect to enjoy it that much, but after spending some time in the first Joustus house I was pleasantly surprised with the experience. Each opponent feels like an in-depth puzzle you have to solve (and some of them _are_ puzzles) - you could be scratching your head for ages trying to figure out the best move to make at some points, but it feels so satisfying to turn the tables on them after all that. Perhaps my favourite opponent so far would be Black Knight in the first Joustus house (dunno if you face him again, but knowing what he's like in other campaigns you probably do). When the game began, he called for Terrorpin and the turtle-like beast came crashing through the wall. At that point, I thought "Oh, it's gonna be a surprise boss fight. Alright then." But then, Black Knight and King Knight jumped up on chairs and started using Terrorpin's back as the Joustus table. I laughed out loud the first time I saw that - the game literally started by subverting my expectations, then it continued to do so throughout the rest of the match. I know this comment is pretty long, but I don't really get many opportunities to talk about this kind of stuff. I love talking about games I like, and King of Cards is no exception. I'm looking forward to Shovel Knight Dig and everything else Yacht Club has in store for the future, but until then, glory to King Knight, you majestic little decadent dandy.
I’m really sad to see it all end, especially with my remaining questions. What was the past shared between Dark, Snow, Shovel, and Shield Knight? What the hell are Goldarmors? Are they knights of Pridemore? If so, then are the knights within the villages freelancers? What was Phantom Striker’s mistake? Why are you using a female Shovel Knight?
My friends and I always play smash when we hang out so when they released showdown I was hyped. Since they all love shovel knight I decided to have them try it and now it’s our big game rn
I think it's really clever how they got around making Joustus obligatory by having King Knight rely on a technicality and literally fight the judges instead of playing the card game.
My only nitpick with King of cards was that they added an achievement for cheating in joustus instead of making one for clearing everything joustus related WITHOUT cheating, y'know like i did in my first playthrough. I do not want an achievement telling me/showing everyone, that i cheated, i want one that says "Hey, joustus is hard as balls to master, but i did it suckas, all on my own"
They are DEFINITELY done with Shovel Knight DLC or ANYTHING for THIS game. Here's looking forward to Shovel Knight 2 and playing ALL this new DLC on the VITA!!!!!! And 3ds and WiiU!
This game got me back into retro style games which is now probably my favorite genre of games. I hope they make more Shovek knight games tho this one is done
Bro I don't even remember how long I waited for King of Cards. It got to a point where my brain literally forgot entirely about it lmao I only knew the game came out when I saw King Knight on the Switch's news page and i was so happy lmao, I literally got up and screamed "YES! YES! FINALLY!" Well worth the wait, I don't understand how Yacht Club Games can still find ways to innovate for a game with came out 5 years ago.
I hope we come back to the Shovel Knight world in a sequel. I can see a puzzle/platforming game based on Tinker Knight in the vein of _A Boy & His Blob_ working very well. Have TK be a one-hit kill but he has a gadget wheel to help him through the stages and bosses.

I need more Shovel Knight campaigns! I would even play as King Knight’s mom.
I love Shovel Knight so much and look forward to whatever they do going forward. But man do I want a 3D Shovel Knight platformer so bad
but it is 3d game ...
texnonik No, it isn't. They animate with 3d software, but it's clearly a 2d game.
I would probably hate that honestly
I think they should keep developing the 2D style for now tbh
Nah... just imagining that, nah
I like Propeller Knight and I wished he had his own campaign. He has the most charming personality of all the knights IMO and I imagined his core mechanic is built around flying or gliding. But after I played King of Cards, I really appreciate their effort of making a fun game. Thank you, Yacht Club Games!
propeller knight is cool but his playstyle would probably just be king Knight with the agility of Specter
what about black knight, he seam to linked with many characters in previous games. I wish to know more about his story as well as his story with shovel knight, sheild knight and polar knight. Well black knight gamplay and moveset woudl be similar to shovel knight except he jumps higher and when he digs it hurts enemeis just like his boss fight
@@sodaguy3651 black knights campaign was described as an extra hard mode. So he'd have had really testing stages
@@boserboser6870if they were going with black knight we couldve explored the lore before the events with the enchantress and tower of fate kinda like shovel knight dig we could have even faced bosses from dig like drill knight scrap knight hive knight and spore knight as black knight
Hearing Dev insight is so satisfying when they know how to make top tier games
Now, joustus was fun, but I found that the joustus house bosses often hurt themselves with their attacks. Destroying gems that they had claimed, destroying rows that only had their own cards, etc.
I seriously want joustus online multiplayer though. The game is awesome and would be great with friends.
Heck yeah! I’d make an entire deck themed around swapping the pieces from red to blue!
I really want a physical card version of Joustus as well to be honest
I could not be more proud and happy for this incredible developers. Thank you guys, for all of these incredible campaigns :D
Put your signed Dirt up there
yacht club said in a recent interview done at jan 30th I think they wanna make shovel knight games forever and ever if you want to fact check me just search shovel knight games forever you will find the podcast where they said that and lots of articles
Shovel Knight Dig is in the works. A SNES art style rogue-like game. New knights too (Drill Knight, Spore Knight, Hive Knight). Looking forward to it
I appreciate Yacht Club so much for giving us this incredible game, the king knight DLC is debatably the best of the 4 stories. I can’t wait to see what they do next.
TINKER KNIGHT
@@Fizz-Q literally every knight is charming enough to want a campaing for them. I would specially like a Tinker, Propeller and Treasure Knight one.
@@morganjary but HE IS TINKER KNIGHT HE SITS ON A MOBILE CHAIR A MOBILE CHAIR AND HAS A MEGAZORD
I never understood the love of treasure knight but I love my flying french man
Can we please get “Shovel Knight RPG”
I'm not much of a Rpg guy but I totally would be down for a Rpg shovel knight game
Hey dude, speaking of indie games I'd like you to cover Hyper Light Drifter one day. You DID mention it in your 2016 Game Awards but I feel like it deserves more respect.
6:24
I freaking KNEW the moon was suspiciously close to the final level on the map screen.
I mean Kardia is kinda of a doorway to it if you think about it.
The end of treasure trove, but shovel knight dig looks excellent, and I'm looking forward to that and any other projects yacht club games has in the future
I really hope we get more Shovel Knight games. This game and its dlc are just so much fun.
Man, I finished Shovel Knight back in early 2015 I guess. Never realized the game expanded that much! I will re-download it, but I also hope that Yacht Club explore new niches/concepts
I've said it before and I'll say it again. Yacht Club has NO BUSINESS making games that are consistently this spectacular
Ooh the moon thing makes sense with one of the secret bosses in the game.
Finally, I’ve been in love with this series for all entries and have been waiting on King Knight since the concept was announced. big W
I forgot this was coming out honestly, can't wait to try it
I love Joustus. I hope to build my own set out of wood at some point, unless Yacht Club plans to release the real deal.
Can you make extra?
@@williamhuynh869 I wished lol. Hopefully Yacht Club releases their own in the near future.
@@morganjary I've made a standard 2x2 and 3x3 so far. And we usually just place the gems, which we substitute with coins, randomly on our own.
I have never been so happy yet so sad about a game coming out. ive been waiting since 2014 for this and bow its over
I got all of the Showdown feats
I main Treasure Knight in showdown... he’s a powerful Zoner
“Be prepared to lose some of your favourites as you proceed”... you can’t lose them if you don’t use them... I literally just use the basic 4 cards
King knight's space adventure:the Moon
Eventually I would like a campaign for more of the various knights, even if it's several years away, but honestly I'm really excited for anything else they might do
“Good game design! Ft. The company that made the game.”
*hmm*
Really makes you think
Imagine if Yacht Club Games and Team Cheery teamed up to make an Hollow Knight x Shovel Knight Crossovergame.
Memelord Teseo OMG a shovel knight metroidvania-style game would be amazing
I want to hear the Shovel Knight Moon level music inspired by the DuckTales Moon level music.
Add Moon knight
I stumbled upon this channel searching for Iconoclasts analysis, and now I'm here. Damn, great stuff! King of Cards was the best of all the campaigns.
I really really want to see King Knight on the moon.
Man, I used to hate shovel knight (except specter of torment), but now that I've experienced king of cards and showdown, I've heaps more love towards these games.
Joutus is way too addictive help I barely made any story progress cause I was to busy with the card game
Final Fantasy fans: First time?
@@ramsey276 R2D2 fans: FIRST TIME
Seemed like an awesome interview. Much respect to these guys for putting so much into this game for less.
5:31 an image I never knew I needed to see
Man this is nuts.
Maybe one day it’ll have a crazy modding community.
I want to play as treasure knight
God, now I’m excited to get Treasure Trove for the Switch! So glad I preordered it!
Bruh i defeated every Joustus opponent and when i had the strongest cards i went and rematched BK. Lets just say he easily whooped my ass twice.
Oh man, it's out??
Time to buy it on PS4 and start over :D
I just did this earlier this week! 😆
If Yacht Club and Team cherry worked together on a platformer, it would been legendary.
I KNEW THAT SHOVEL KNIGHT MODEL WAS SMALLER THAN NORMAL!
The card game strangely reminds me on Tetra Master in Final Fantasy IX back then.
They did mention that it looks like Triple Triad from FF8 but plays nothing like it haha
Honestly, the moon thing isn't hard to believe. For those who've interacted with cardia, you know what I mean.
I thought of the Cardia boss fight the moment King Kinght on the moon was mentioned
My friends and I always play smash when we hang out so when they released showdown I was hyped. Since they all love shovel knight I decided to have them try it and now it’s our big game rn
My single favorite video game of all time. Thank you Yacht Club for making this piece of art
Let My BOY Go To The MOON! !!!
This and specter knight was my favorite games, but the finale was very depressing lol
great vid Snoman! I'm excited to see where Yacht Club goes from here!
Reminds me of Wario GB and GBC games. Love it!
Yes! They were a big inspiration
I think it's really clever how they got around making Joustus obligatory by having King Knight rely on a technicality and literally fight the judges instead of playing the card game.
He outsmarted them in the dumbest possible way.
Cant wait for Shovel Knight Dig now!!!! I NEED MORE SHOVEL KNIGHT!!!
My only nitpick with King of cards was that they added an achievement for cheating in joustus instead of making one for clearing everything joustus related WITHOUT cheating, y'know like i did in my first playthrough. I do not want an achievement telling me/showing everyone, that i cheated, i want one that says "Hey, joustus is hard as balls to master, but i did it suckas, all on my own"
Oh my, I didn’t know retromation was a fan of your content.
to the moon hahaha, that's some stuff I would start to image after finish this masterpiece!
If they were to for some reason kickstart the game AGAIN I would pay for DLCs for all the rest of the knights.
It will be exciting to see if King of Cards can top Plague of Shadows, which was the best campaign for me.
Drops a video literally a day after the games release.
That's fast!
I pray Joustus is released as a legit card game. It deserves tournaments
Shovel Knight is in Smash Bros. They made jackpot. All the effort they made was worth it! Can't wait for the next projects!
Awesome video, really enjoyed it! :) Never ended up finishing the original game. Might have to go revisit! Cheers
King is my favorite campaign easily
Bro I don't even remember how long I waited for King of Cards. It got to a point where my brain literally forgot entirely about it lmao
I only knew the game came out when I saw King Knight on the Switch's news page and i was so happy lmao, I literally got up and screamed "YES! YES! FINALLY!"
Well worth the wait, I don't understand how Yacht Club Games can still find ways to innovate for a game with came out 5 years ago.
I hope we come back to the Shovel Knight world in a sequel. I can see a puzzle/platforming game based on Tinker Knight in the vein of _A Boy & His Blob_ working very well. Have TK be a one-hit kill but he has a gadget wheel to help him through the stages and bosses.
King Knight goes to the fucking moon Deluxe (Featuring Goldarmor from Shovel Knight Showdown)
I’m so glad i got Treasure trove on sale this year, i just started getting in on shovel knight
Dude, imagine if Yacht Club Games was around at the start of the popularization of video games, using Shovel Knight to compete with Mario, Sonic, and all the other mascot characters? That'd be dope.
I bought it as a christmas gift and thought it was going to be boring and let's just say i can't stop playing Shovel knight is by FAR one of THE best games ever made
