    Stalker is a fucking beast of a mech, I'm surprised it's not more popular.
    Even the base model 3F is a beast on the tabletop, as I found out today as it tore apart a Warhammer.

    • @Misericorde9
      @Misericorde9 3 года назад

      The Stalker is a Universal Carrier writ very large, and like the UC has a coarse, utilitarian appearance. Back in the MW2:Mercs days it was often called the “walking football”. A lot of people who got into BT back then may also shy away from it still because the old “bounding spheres” hit detection used in the MW2 generation of games was especially unkind to the Stalker.

    I love marauders in this game, you stack their bonus to called shots with the buffs you can get on a mech warrior and you can get a pretty consistant 35% called shot to the head. combine that with an AC20, or a couple PPCs, or just a black knight turned medium laser disco ball of death and you'll be splattering mech warriors out of their cockpits and picking up mostly intact mechs pretty damned consistently

    Wait... Marc Summers had OCD and still managed to endure several years of hosting Double Dare with a smile? That man's a hero.
    I have to agree that HBS either underestimated the potential audience for this game, or else deliberately lowballed their expectations just to avoid overextending themselves.* Even if the franchise languished for a decade or so, MechWarrior and MechCommander left a pretty sizeable mark on a generation of PC gaming, and plenty of reviewers cited those games as their entry points into the BT universe.
    *(Mitch Gitelman almost certainly had bad career experiences with hype trains going off the rails, especially after his time working for Microsoft, judging from the weariness that creeps into his voice whenever he talks about the "lessons" learned there. With BattleTech, he was always very conservative about announcing or confirming features in development, and was probably the same way when it came to gauging the company's potential risk vs. reward.)

    Hey Tex.
    You mentioned Neuro-Helmet problems. I also think they would be a 'common' thing in older Mech Warriors that survive multiple instances of massive damage or destruction of their Mechs.
    I imagine that those that survive to be 'retired' and re-trained into jobs that will not have flashy lights, loud noises, and away from the sounds of explosives going off.
    Mostly likely jobs like, Historian, Librarian, Store Clerk, Night Guard Duty (Civilian Rent-A-Cop type), etc.
    Just my thoughts.

    @franksmedley8619 3 года назад +3

    Hey Tex.
    Lov'in the Scrombles play through. To me, it seems, thou dost protest thy 'lack' of skills overmuch. I agree that you're no Baradul, but you played those Missions fairly well in my honest opinion. Although, I would have nabbed that Thunderbolt part from the 2nd mission. I like T-bolts. They are, indeed, tough Mechs. And they CAN sport Jump Jets as well. I've seen other players brows break out in sweat when my T-bolt jumped over a ridge it could not climb in one turn, land, and unload a Large Laser and trio of Mediums into their prized Mech's thin rear armor.
    Or, I might mention the time my T-bolt entered a town, jumped up onto a 3 story building, brought the pain... not to the target Mech, but to the 7 story building it was atop of... Whups! Mech fall down... HARD. :)
    If you do get your grubby mitts on a Thunderbolt, might I suggest a loadout? ER Large Laser, Three Pulse Mediums, NO Jump Jets, and an LRM-20? If you can't lay hands on the higher tech, then a Large Laser, 3 Mediums, and the LRM-20, and Jump Jets.
    Other than the Four LRM-15 Stalker, the Four PPC Awesome, and the FIVE Large Laser Marauder, the Thunderbolt has to be one of my favorite designs... simply because of it's durability. Back in the early '90's I used one to excellent effect against most of the other Heavies, and quite a few of the Assaults. I experimented quite a bit with various loadouts, and even though HBS has 'hard points', there are several very nice weapons mixes you can do with a T-bolt.
    You already have two Marauders. Might I suggest converting at least ONE to a Five Large Laser set up? With a pilot that has a high Gunnery, and a fair, to high, Tactics skill, those five big lasers can usually 'core' a Mech in one round. Two, if it's an Assault Mech. And that's NOT considering any 'help' from lance mates.
    I might suggest, with all respect, that you go back and re-do the Stalker you just 'upgraded'. I would take the 'hit' on armoring to put in 2 LRM-20's and 2 LRM-10's and 5 tons of ammo. Six, if you're thinking of needing that many 'broadsides' from it. OR, go with Four LRM-15's, spread out, plenty of Heat Sinks, and perhaps a pair of enhanced Medium Lasers as secondary armaments.
    Seriously... Try out the 5 Large Laser Marauders. A pair of them should be able to 'take down' any Mech you point at in one 'round' of combat, with the proviso that you have Good Pilots (which you do). I have done this in my own play through, with pilots that have Gunnery 8+, and Tactics 8+ (8+ = skill level 8, or higher). The pair of them were taking down Heavies and the lighter armored Assault Mechs in ONE 'round' of combat on a fairly consistent basis (especially if you use the morale 'skill' to enhance targeting by 'aimed fire' at the Target's vulnerable points... like side torsos, where ammo is usually stored).
    Oh, yes... the Four PPC Awesome??? You CAN mount 4 PPCs on an Awesome, AND enough Heat Sinks to keep it almost heat neutral. AND, still armor it nearly to maximum.
    Back to the Thunderbolt... Way back, in the late 80's, it was the one of the first Heavy Mechs I got my hands on playing the original FASA tabletop game that was NOT a Shadow Hawk, Griffon, or Wolverine. Unless I bought a Mech from somewhere, it was my policy to only use what I could buy, or salvage from the battlefield. And I got a T-bolt by coring it's cockpit from behind with a Panther. No one expected me to put a Pilot with Gunnery 1 into something as 'light' as a Panther, and it was mostly ignored on the battle to concentrate on my heavies. By Heavies, I mean a pair of 'upgraded' Shadow Hawks, and an 'upgraded' Griffon. Just before the decapitation shot, the Griffon had gotten in a cockpit hit with it's LRM launcher, which, stripped off most of the armor there, making the PPC hit by the Panther 'lethal'.
    By stripping away the tertiary weapons (MG's, SRM's, etc) I was able to make the Mech Jump, which caused all sorts of consternation amongst my opponents. Especially when it would slog onto the field to close distance and run right at some intervening terrain feature. Only to 'ignore' the terrain and either leap over it, or jump atop it. You can see why that would 'upset' some people. 'Hey! Thunderbolt's don't jump!'... 'Wellllll, this one does!' *grin*... yeah, good times.
    LRM-60 Stalkers, and Quint Lrg Las Marauders would 'up your game' a bit, in my honest opinion. Try it!
    spoken, Frank-ly
