When I was 6 I saw someone selling wooden ducks carved out of wood. I went up to them an ask "How do you make ducks out of wood?" They looked at me and said "Well, you start by cutting away everything that isn't a duck..."

The term "whittlin' " always reminds me of the tiny canoes, and little people, that my dad makes occasionally. He always acts like he's not creative but I think it takes quite a bit of creativity to turn a stick into a little man's head wearing a park ranger type hat. Also, special thanks to Jeff, TheCrafsMan's adventurous friend, doin' crazy wild stuff.

The Cub Scouts teach the kids that the area around where they are cutting is the "blood circle" because that's where you or others can get hurt if you aren't being careful. It's a tiny bit dramatic, but it's accurate. It is also effective in conveying the dangers in a way the kids will remember. My dad taught me how to do basic whittling, and he (in his own style) taught what you're teaching here. Long story short, thank you for the excellent knife safety tips in this video!

You are a great teacher, I’m gonna be making a couple of these with my 11 year old grandson today.
I’m what I would call, beginner/intermediate, I’ve carved some objects and several nativity figures, and made custom handles for small hand tools etc. But I ain’t done no twig cockerel/chicken. He’s done a little bit with the scouts for which I gave him a folding knife but today we will both be using my proper hand carving knives. Fingers crossed it all goes well.
My guess is he might loose interest quickly, he’s more into games on the computer but I’m trying to get him away from that...
Fingers crossed 🤞 not cut eh?

Fine video mate. I like you. You down to earth young man. You remind me of someone raised in the back country like myself. The way you talk is not city talk to me anyway. Thank you for your time showing all your skills.

I really like how you explain what you are going to do, and then you describe it as you are doing it. It helps to have it visualized ahead of time. Thanks.
