Thank you for taking the time to show & teach the way you do.. I have story to tell you I will try to get it covered as short as possible... l am from Michigan by the way, my wife & I were childhood sweethearts she was 13 & I was 15 when we started seeing each other in mid 70's. We moved to Ca in 78 after about 1 1/2 yrs we split up. She went her way me I joined the US Navy becoming a Submarine Sailor.. l met a young woman who I moved in with she got pregnant with our daughter Amber Rae.. I was lucky enough to be in Port when she went into Labor. They made her walk around awhile because she was not yet ready. Well I got kicked out because of a few things happening BP was high then low.. the next morin 6hrs later they finally told me about my daughter was on the small side & had blood transfusion because of no platelets. They let me see brinda and we waited for them to bring Amber up to Brenda & me. While I was waiting for them she got sick, black vomit. The next thing I knew exploratory surgery... l was 22 she had just turned 21.. 23days later she had passed away & I was lost I brought my daughter from San Diego to Mi to my Mom. I had Amber during this time I was going to learn to play Guitar and play her music...... l never did that was Jan 83... l finished my time in Navy moved up state NY to see her family for just over a yr. Then I moved to Mi, then Co.. Got married had a son moved back to Mi divorced and had know Idea what to do.. That is when My childhood sweetheart got ahold of me on a T-Day we have been together every scene 90. Things were going well for us my Job as Maintenance Supervisor had been helping us move ahead. In 2007 I was in a Motorcycle accident I was beaten up inside bad 23 broken, stress fractures, compression fractures and many other things. They put me in a Induced Coma for aprox 1 1/2mo. Within a wk I had my wife take the me to music story & bought a Guitar finally. . I couldn't hardly even talk because of the trek ventilator I guess it is called. Anyway I didn't take lesson I tried to go back to work about 9mo scene the accident. I last 5wks & I knew I couldn't do my job anymore. I have picked up Guitar now & then to try and teach myself couldn't do it. I finally started fb a few yrs back & I look up some of the people on U-tube.. But then I met you and I am glad I did.. l don't want to put names down but my sister-in-law BF was in music business with Black Crowes. I had been to many of there Concerts be4 my accident last one was in Co at Red Rocks.. l flew out to met them there back stage all access pass every time I would meet them at other venues as well was asked at on time to work for him being assigned. Road manager but turned it down. Anyway Ur Teaching " Talks to Angels " gave me inspiration to learn again. . I have most of down not good but I am getting there, I didn't mention that I am permanently disabled. I have TBI (Traumatic Brain Injury ) as well. . Thank you very much for you helped me so much because you take the time to teach. .. l don't think I could have done it without finding you its been a long 14yrs I must say.. Thank you
keep up the amazing work.. free youtube song lessons have made this amazing community where anyone with a guitar and a computer or cell phone you can in a few years learn enough to play in a band or solo.. which makes learning to play the guitar something with a buy in as low as finding one to play.. i quit playing over a decade becuz not progressing made it just so easy to hit a learning wall... i bought a guitar to just see what i could remember during the pandemic... and its amazing how now a days the hardest part of learning is simply choosing what songs. the free lesson teachers for real make peoples lifes better.. thank u
I learned this many years ago, back when I was in the service. I never tuned down a step because of my vocal range back then. I have always loved this song for playing campfires and camping.
Greetings from Wilderness South Africa. Thanks for another great classic, Angela. I've learned so much from your meticulous lessons. Really appreciated.
I keep one of my guitars tune down a whole step just because as you get older it’s easier easier to sing certain songs. For those who did not know Paul McCartney’s famous song yesterday was tune down a whole step so he could play it In G, but yet sing it in F. It’s an old trick a lot of musicians to because it is easier to play it around the G chord if it’s a little high then you tune down one whole step and sing it in F major major. Also a lot of musicians like Paul Simon would tune the guitar 1/2 step lower like in the boxer and a few other songs because it was easier to sing
I leave one of mine in that tuning, and just put a capo on for standard tuning. Less tension on the strings, makes it easier for me to play with the arthritis in my hands. Take care of yourself and your family. From Charlie in the States.
Love your teaching style no wonder I couldn’t hit those notes. I remember when I first heard this song there at the Cow Palace S.F. when it was recorded it on Rust never sleeps. I’m sure you have Thrasher in your lessons. Thanks so much 😎👍
Another Great Guitar Lesson ....I think your the best teacher on the net! Thank you so much for your time & effort!....its really making me play better!
Totally agree. Our Angela is a true gem, isn't she? Her instruction has inspired and pushed me to a higher level. Her common reminder that "you can't play fast what you can't play slow" sounds very basic, but it has actually reshaped my entire approach to learning the guitar. Wonderful instructor all the way! :-)
Hey Hey, Angela, what a pleasure to listen to your teaching! I didn't notice, some 40 years ago, when I learnt this song, Neil just dropped the tuning by one second interval. That's why his guitar sounded so special! Oh My! Francis from France
Hey Angela, great lesson, really catches the nuances of Neil's playing. I've always just played this in standard tuning, but this makes it bring out the bass much more. Thanks again from South Carolina.
If I ever thought I would be able to play this song, you just made it possible. Thanks so much. Old now tryin to pick this thing up again. You helped me alot.😅
I like that song a lot. I put a hard cover notebook so I can place it on a small easel I made that sets on my coffee table or if I go out in the country and set it up the wind won't blow it all over but unlike an instructional book that wants to close all the time this doesn't and the pages turn easy. Thank you Angela your lessons gifts to me. Zombiwolf
Angela, I found you on RUclips while looking for a tutorial for "My, My, Hey, Hey" by Neil Young. I was surprised by your tutorial-you played in the same tuning as the original song. I liked your technique for explaining how to play the song, and it's clear that you are an exceptional guitarist, as those who close their eyes when playing become one with their instrument and elevate the music. What I liked the most was you singing a small part; your voice has a beautiful signature, reminding me a bit of Stevie Nicks without vibrato. A song that would sound interesting with you singing would be "Lotta Love" by Neil Young, as it suits a female voice better.
Thank you for another great lesson. Torn between Heart of Gold and this song as a favourite. So many to choose from. Such a talented artist. Intro riffs are iconic. Always look forward to Saturday and the Riff Rundown.
Funny, I always thought I had this song exactly as I wanted it, but I went through this anyway, and found I was wrong. Much better now. . Get to hear your angelic voice too. 💫 Thanks, Angela 💌
Excellent lesson… and a very rewarding song to play with cool sounding reruns on he bass strings. You taught me a few places I didn’t interpret right, so thank you. I love songs from Harvest Moon. You and Me and War of Man are 2 favs.
hI hey all, I have been following this show for quite a while now, it's just awesome learnig new stuff. Regards all the way from the South Pacific. (Papua New Guinea).
Thank You, Thank You, Thank You!!! I have wanted to play this song since I first saw Rust Never Sleeps in the movie theater in 1980. I tried countless times on my own to no avail. Playing along to your lesson and it finally sounds like it should. So glad I subscribed to your channel.
Hey Angela, Itune in from Magdeburg Germany. I love your Lessons on many reasons. But most of it, because every lesson helps me to get better on guitar and it's with fun! My favourit Neil Young song might be Rocking in a Free World, but he has so many awsom songs created.
Once again, I am impressed that someone at your tender age has the smarts and perceptive musical ear to reach back in time to tap a song created long before you graced the earth with your presence, and recognize a great, classic tune just made for acoustic guitar. Old Neil has several in this class. Thanks for giving us the basics and insight on how to make this one come alive.
Comments mentioned title issue. "My My, Hey Hey (Out of the Blue)" is a song by Canadian musician Neil Young. An acoustic song, it was recorded live in early 1978 at the Boarding House in San Francisco, California.Combined with its hard rock counterpart "Hey Hey, My My (Into the Black)", it bookends Young's 1979 album Rust Never Sleeps. I had no idea.
Angela… I LOVE your videos. Finally learned Harvest Moon correctly! (Been playing it wrong since the 1990s!). Would you consider doing the acoustic version of Cowgirl in the Sand (like the version Neil does on Four Way Street?). Thanks for all of the lessons- Nick in Baltimore
Tuning in from Memphis TN. So many songs to.choose from but The Needle and the Damage Done would be my choose for fav and maybe a lesson! What do you think Angela?
Hi Angela. You were a very good teacher thank you for your lessons. I am an intermediate to advance player. I do notice that you sometimes play the G string followed by the G chord and sometimes you don’t play the G string you go right to the G cord. Which is it? Lastly you should think about attaching a link to buy me a cuppa coffee. This will allow people that don’t want to be patriots to pay you five or more dollars for a lesson. You’re very nice. Of teaching
Aloha, I keep missing a note in your demonstration of the intro riff: A (note; open 5th A string), then down strum Am chord, then the C# (note, 5th string/2nd fret)), and then C (note/5th string/3rd fret), ? Fav NY: acoustic ‘Cowgirl in the Sand’.
Favorite song old man
Hey Angela, in your next live session, can you also share the audio settings and what each button or knobs do on your DI silver box?
Sure Alan. I'd be happy to do that in my next acoustic lesson!
Mt. Shasta, CA. Can't narrow it down to one Neil Young song - I love Southern Man, Harvest Moon, and Old Man equally.
Hey Angela from Nova Scotia Canada. love the videos. In hey hey my my , what key is the harmonica? Is it a G that Neil uses ?
Aloha,
I keep missing a note in your demonstration of the intro riff:
A (note; open 5th A string),
then down strum Am chord,
then the C# (note, 5th string/2nd fret)),
and then C (note/5th string/3rd fret),
? (note), Is it the open A string again note?
to the G chord.
Can you fill that "?" missing note in for me?
Mahalo
Thank you. You are special
That Martin handles down tuning pretty good.
I closed this at 4:00am it's 10:00am and I'm ready I like the sound of this.
very nice tutorial
I missed this one , but great song and lesson , more NY.
Are you using Martin’s Titanium Core Nickel Wound strings in a light gauge?
Thank you for the lesson. Love it.
It will be a complete lesson if you play the harmonica too. And teach the harmonica too.
SAMCRO BABY!!!!!
This is what she felt
-Opie to Stahl
I have been struggling with this song for weeks now, the challenge is not the riff, it's the strumming.. I simply cannot get it. Can someone provide me with the basic strumming for the beginner edition of this song?
