Neil Young - Hey Hey, My My (Live at Farm Aid 1985)

- Neil Young performs "Hey Hey, My My (Into the Black)" at Farm Aid in Champaign, Illinois on September 22, 1985.
Farm Aid’s mission is to build a vibrant, family farm-centered system of agriculture in America. Farm Aid artists and board members Willie Nelson, Neil Young, John Mellencamp, Dave Matthews and Margo Price host an annual festival to raise funds to support Farm Aid’s work with family farmers and to inspire people to choose family farm food. For more than 35 years, Farm Aid, with the support of the artists who contribute their performances each year, has raised nearly $80 million to support programs that help farmers thrive, expand the reach of the Good Food Movement, take action to change the dominant system of industrial agriculture and promote food from family farms.

Technically Jeff Blackburn from the band The Ducks, said it first. Neil was in the band along with Bob Mosley and Johnny Craviotto. Year's later the phrase became iconic when Kurt said it in a note he left behind on that day he took his life. He got the phrase from this song.

I'm 27. The love of my life lost his dad to suicide in 2019. His dad loved Neil Young more than any other musician. My love was the most incredible musician. He took his life in 2021. We used to always cover Neil songs together up at Sundance. Feel like I'm a baby of the 60s with the level of attachment I have to this music.
This song is not referencing suicide. "It's better to burn out, than to fade away" is specifically referencing continuing to the end, rather than leaving. This is why Mr. Young quit performing this song, because he was so badly stricken with it's interpretation. "Out of the blue and into the black. They give you this but you pay for that." Speaks to the next world where you are rewarded but you pay for past mistakes. The black is out there, but do not go until the end. You were put here with love always from our father.

Correction: He's from Canada. Canada is part of (North) America; which is a continent. The United States of America is also a country in America. By the way in January he received his US Citizenship, which was delayed due to his marijuana use :) He now has dual citizenship. I'm not trying to be an ass. It's just one of my pet peeves.
When I heard this song, I was in a difficult situation, I divorced my wife after 18 years of marriage and I have two beloved daughters, I quit my hated job, all my close friends turned away from me, not a single one supported me, did not say a word of sympathy, how hardened we have become in this digital age, I hated this life, I did not want to live, I thought about leaving it, but at some point I thought about it and decided to try to make what I had dreamed of before come true. I put everything on the line, I loved myself for who I am, I began to respect my actions, appreciate them and saw that I was getting better. I believed in myself, I told myself that I would start over, I would build the life of my dreams. I moved to another city, prepared for an interview for a new job, found it, I work and enjoy my actions. I will meet another girl, but I do not forget about my daughters, I help them. Believe in yourself, even if everyone around you has turned away. Life is an interesting thing, you never know how it will turn. Thanks to everyone who read my thoughts to the end...

+jessmess2861 Pretty sure it's about Elvis and Johnny Rotten the lead of Sex Pistols and how being in the rock industry it's sometimes better to get off at the height of your success, hence "it's better to burn out than to fade away". How people will be remembered for the great things they do in life, even if only a brief and faint glimmer of the limelight, it's better than just passing by life and not leaving anything great to be remembered by. Don't think drugs had too much to do with the song(although I think it was the pills to stay up that killed elvis?), but maybe I'm wrong, who knows, would have to ask Neil himself.
+jessmess2861 oh that's interesting, I wouldn't have been to catch that reference as I'm not familiar with it, but that sounds like a reasonable interpretation for that part, I just don't think it represents the whole song though. On that note thanks for sharing, cool stuff to know! :)
+jessmess2861 "Hey Hey, My My (Into the Black)''is a Rock song by Neil Young. Combined with its acoustic counterpart ''My My, Hey Hey (Out of the Blue)", it bookends Young's successful 1979 album ''Rust Never Sleeps". Inspired by electropunk group Devo, the rise of Punk rock and what Young viewed as his own growing irrelevance, the song significantly revitalized Young's career at the time, and today crosses generations, inspiring admirers from punk to grunge. The song is about the alternatives of continuing to produce similar music ("to rust" or - in "My My, Hey Hey (Out of the Blue)" - "to fade away") or to burn out."
