I love how you focused on the qualities of each individual game, instead of factoring some games over others just because they're older and thus more influential. I obviously don't agree with everything (I'd personally put NSMB DS higher, SM64 lower, and SMG1 over SMG2), but I appreciate your more objective take compared to most other youtubers.
@@mep6302 do you even know what ignorant means? I'd rather play a game that has actually _aged well_ and is still _fun to play_ over a game that may have been good """for its time"""
I'd put SM64 lower too. It's like the 3d version of the original Super Mario Bros. for NES. Absolutely groundbreaking for its time, and millions and millions of kids grew up on it and are wrapped up in nostalgia. But most people recognize that Mario is quite limited and nowhere close to the best in the series. Games like Mario 3 and Mario world clearly did it better. To me, 64 is much the same. I appreciate everything it did for the industry, but as a stand alone game it's limited and quite flawed. Plenty of 3d Mario games and other 3d platformers have come along and just did it better. They will never be as influential as 64, but they are nonetheless better games.

I _still_ see youtubers (e.g. copycat) hail mario 64 and even the original super mario bros as timeless, near-flawless masterpieces, however these two games are by far the worst ones in the series of their respective dimensions (if we're willing to retcon the lost levels). the two games fail in so many fundamental aspects that it's clear that the only appeal these games have is their legacy or nostalgia, rather than actually good design. I don't care that mario 64 is the most influential of the 3d series. sunshine, 3d land, and 3d world are better in nearly every aspect even though they're always ranked below it.
thank you SO MUCH for putting Mario Galaxy 1 & 2 so high on this list, I loved all of the rest of the video, as always. keep it going ! really appreciate your work
This was a really good list! Most lists on RUclips are just the newest game to the oldest, but this didn’t consider nostalgia and focused purely on the quality.
What?! The green stars are the best addition of mg2! It's so much better than the 'do everything over again with Luigi' thing on the first game. And it's optional, so why consider it a flaw?
I'm not sure I agree. It felt like For every 2 well placed and interesting green stars, there was another one that was just lazily slapped over a bottomless pit.
The luigi thing basically is just a small bonus for replaying the game. Meanwhile, the green star feel like they promise something more, but it ends up being a very tedious process.
Not only is SMG2 my favorite mario game, but its my favorite game of all time! And that says a lot considering I've played games like Bioshock, Final Fantasy VII, and Fallout New Vegas. It was the very first game I ever spend money on. I remember going over to my neighbors house to play it, and wanting so much to play it myself... so, when my birthday came around, I knew this was exactly what I wanted
Completely agree on most of this list and especially your number one. Super Mario Galaxy 2 could have just been an easy cash in (Nintendo being FAR more fond of that than all other game companies combined), and yet it totally stuck the landing and somehow managed to top with aplomb the great first Galaxy. Every single level is fun and interesting, unique and challenging. The music is sooooooo good. The controls are perfect. Most Marios, i remember very fondly, but Galaxy 2 is simply next level and hands down one of the most flawless games ever made.
Odyssey is my number 1 but I can’t deny that Galaxy 1 and 2 are absolute masterpieces. Odyssey has better gameplay for me and level design (barely) but there’s something about the atmopshere and presentation about those games that none of the other Mario Games lack. And the Sunshine ranking hurts me
Super Mario World on the SNES takes the cake for me. It’s as close to a perfect game as you can get. The innovative level design, unforgettable music, introduction of Yoshi, and all the secrets. It still holds up today.
I absolutely love these videos! I will admit that I’m rather disappointed there was no mention of Super Mario 64 DS, which is so different from the original I could see it getting its own spot on the list. Even if not, I do think it deserves a mention!
Thanks for the kind words. You're right, it is very different, but this list was only for the original Mario titles (Mario U being a slight exception since the deluxe version is identical for the most part). I probably should have made that clear in the intro!
I would’ve put NSMB higher but I’m glad to see someone who gives it respect that it deserves :D Edit: ok you’ve earned my respect for putting 3D Land that high
I know! I'm sitting in my chair wondering why nobody thinks this is the best game and then this pops up in my recommended and I almost agree with every choice
Dude literally everyone loves the galaxy games and puts at least one of them in their top two every time. I think they’re overrated and sunshine is underrated but that’s just my opinion
@@cranjismcbasketball3513 Galaxy 1 deserves just about every bit of praise it gets. While I do think Sunshine is a little underrated, it's by no means one of the better Mario games. I like it so far, but I can't stand how the movement feels. It so janky with the absolute lack of momentum compared to 64.
@@drakon0873 Well, people forgot about it and started cooming their pants over Odyssey despite some very obvious issues it has. I _really_ wish I liked Odyssey more than I did, but almost all of the Moons I collected felt like they were designed incredibly lazily, making them not feel good to collect.
I have played them all and here is my top 10: 1 mario galaxy 2 (10/10) 2 mario galaxy 1 (9.9/10) 3 mario odyssey (9.8/10) 4 mario 64 (9.6/10) 5 mario 3d world (9.5/10) 6 mario sunshine (9.4/10) 7 mario 3d land (9.3/10) 8 mario bros wii (9.2/10) 9 mario world (9.1/10) 10 mario bros 3 (9/10)
Galaxy 2 is also my favorite Mario game. It is the most definitive Mario 3D game (other than odyssey). It has such a good balance of linear and open world gameplay. It also utilizes good gimmicks from past Mario games that weren’t seen in awhile while introducing its own.
@@bluekirbyrocks You should play the second game too. If your first experience with galaxy 1 was the all stars port and you don't have a wii then that might be difficult. Definitely give it a try though if you can.
at my dad’s house, we have a homebrewed Nintendo Wii that the family shares. when i visit him next, i’ll see if i’ll be able to try Mario Galaxy 2. meanwhile, i can play the first galaxy on switch
Super Mario Land 2 was the first Super Mario game I ever played (I still own it) and is definitely my favorite. The ost really does get stuck in your head
This is a really great list! It’s not exactly what I would have put, but that’s to be expected. Most people hate the NSMB games because of how innovative games used to be. It’s great to see someone who looks at games for what they are, not what they could have been.
I agree with this list! One thing I would change if I made it was putting nsmb a bit higher because I had the most fun with it but this is one list I enjoyed watching!
great video my guy, and respectable list. personally, my top 3 favourites are smb3, sm3d world, and galaxy. didn't play my whole way through galaxy as a kid, but i still loved it!
My opinion: SMB3 low-end (yes, I know this is weird, but it’s SO DANG HARD that I cannot have any major fun with it after world 1), SM3DW high-end and SMG middle (I don’t like intense emotions).
@MAL MAL most people actually prefer the second game. It’s just that people aren’t as vocal about voicing that opinion since most people would expect a sequel to be better. Saying galaxy 2 is better would be like ‘duh.’ Whereas saying galaxy 1 is better is likely a more interesting opinion.
@MAL MAL it's only longer and more challenging than the first game if you're willing to go after the green stars, which aren't even fun to collect. that really doesn't convince me at all that 2 is "obviously" the better game, let alone slightly.
@@jclkaytwo galaxy 2: more focused level design. Greater variety. More challenging. Better power ups. Better hub (yes. I said it. The observatory has no business being as big as it is with how little there is to do). Prankster comets were implemented in a much better fashion as well as Luigi. Galaxy 1’s sandbox levels were honestly where the game was at its worst. Mario’s controls were tailored towards tight platforming, not exploration. And there wasn’t even a lot of exploration on those planetoids beyond the occasional secret pipe and star bit arrangement. What else is there? Oh yeah. A much better postgame. Talk shit about the green stars all you want but they’re still a cut above playing the entire game over again in green clothes. Really, if both games released at the same time I don’t think there’d be any debate which is better.

I appreciate how highly you regard NSMB's Wii and Wii U, and especially 3d world. All of those games get shit on, especially 3d world, so it's nice to see someone who truly appreciates those games. Mario 3 at seven is quite a bit too low for me though, and while everyone seems to love 64, I just want to see SOMEONE who thinks it's a middle of the road Mario game at best. It is, in fact, my least favorite 3d Mario game. I'd so much rather play 3d World/Land and the Galaxies. The platforming in those games is just clearly on another level than 64 imo. I realize that 64 was groundbreaking and I respect that. But the original Super Mario Bros. was every bit as ground breaking and most people have recognized that it's not one of the better games in the series because it's so limited. I await the day that people will realize the same thing about 64. It was an important event in video game history, but other games came along and did it better. Just my two cents.
I just played another 100% playthrough of super mario galaxy 2. This game hits different and its sad to see it not enough attention. If only they came out with a 3rd one....
Super mario Galaxy 1 & 2 really made my childhood. I would play them everyday and have a BLAST. I loved them so much and the music is really great. Amazing review, too.
My favorite Mario platformer is by far Super Paper Mario. I know, it has RPG elements and all that, but the story is amazing and the gameplay is my favorite of any of the other games by far.
SMB1 deserves to be top 5, it's the most groundbreaking game ever made. Remember the NES was a "home arcade machine" before SMB1 really gave birth to the term "video game"
64 has always been the best Mario game in my opinion. It's seriously one of the best video games of all time. Everything, from the soundtrack to the level design to exploring the castle, it's just something that you can't get enough of. For some reason, Super Mario 64 has always made me feel emotional and I don't know what it is, I'm not nostalgic since I was born long after the N64, I don't know. The soundtrack always makes me tear up, whether it be the Staff Roll or the castle theme. I love Super Mario 64, and no other Mario game can ever surpass it. The Galaxy games are a very close second though.

New Super Mario Bros: You were happy to see 2D mario games back when it first came out. Super Mario Galaxy: You also have very good taste :). New Super Mario Bros Wii: You love the Koopalings because you fight them a million times in this game. Super Mario Galaxy 2: You have good taste. But you like something a bit more challenging. Super Mario 3D Land: 2D plaformers are your thing but you like it when 3D games are based on them. New Super Mario Bros 2: You love coins. New Super Mario Bros U: You like to keep things the same. To be _completely_ honest, while I adore Galaxy 1 so damn much, I was a little...disappointed with Galaxy 2. I didn't like the hyper linear map, the hub that's so small it's pointless, where each of its functions could have just been on a map(Starship Mario felt like more of an obligation than anything), and how it...didn't feel anything like Galaxy 1, outside of movement and some level design. I didn't like how despite being a Galaxy game, there's so little actual focus on space that space feels like an afterthought. Even the box art emphasizes that by being a lot brighter. The deep intense atmosphere that Galaxy 1 had is completely gone. It feels like how Lost Levels felt, only more polished. It feels less like a sequel and more like a DLC pack. Yes, it had some great level design, I'll give it that, but it just didn't _feel_ as good as Galaxy 1.
There it is again...'atmosphere.' If you prefer the first game for this reason then go right ahead but I don't think you can really argue that it makes it better in the face of 2's improvements. As someone who grew up with the first game the second game is easily superior imo. Level design is in a class of its own and the power ups are vastly superior if you ask me. Really mad the cloud flower hasn't returned yet and yoshi's is arguably the best he's ever been in the main series. Hate the hyper linear map if you want but 1's hub is functionally the exact same thing with extra steps. 2 is technically a step up because of that. I wish we could stop pretending that linear means worse because it really doesn't. I understand the complaint that there's little to no focus on the theme of space but was that ever really important to the first galaxy? Playing the first game, it felt more like the space setting was used to contextualise the rather ridiculous ideas and platforming logic that wouldn't fit in any other setting. There were still plenty of spacy looking areas in 2 and I don't see why space can only be stars on a black background. Who's to say space can't get a little bizarre, especially in a series as ridiculous as mario? I would urge you to play the second game again if you haven't done so in a while. Jamie himself said he didn't enjoy the second game quite as much as the first on his initial romp, while now it seems like he considers it the best platformer ever made.
@@callinater6133 The level design might be better but I didn't like how most galaxies were even more linear than in the first game. Galaxy 2's hub is functionally different because you can't pick and choose galaxies at your leisure. You can skip so many galaxies if you really want to, and there's even an entire observatory that's completely optional. Since it follows a NSMB style map, the hud is completely pointless. The map really threw me off when I first played it because I was expecting a game that was actually designed like Galaxy 1. I'd argue that the focus on the space theme is absolutely important in a game called "Super Mario Galaxy 2". Bizarre? The first game did that. You don't have to abandon the space theme almost entirely to make it bizarre.
@@TheAbsol7448 even more linear is not necessarily a flaw. And galaxy’s sandbox levels were among the weakest levels in the game if you ask me. Mario’s moveset in galaxy just isn’t tailored with exploration in mind. I can guarantee you that if the entirety of galaxy were those sandbox galaxies the game would be far worse than 64 or sunshine. Non linearity for the sake of non linearity is not good design - it just screams a lack of confidence from the developers to make a well thought out level. 2 was much more confident in what it wanted to be, which is a course clear platformer. If you don’t like it then that means the format just isn’t for you, it doesn’t make the game worse. Galaxy 2’s more linear map progression allows the game to ramp up its difficulty more easily than the first game, which it does. And because there are levels that Nintendo knew everyone would have to play, they could design some of the later levels around expanding on the concepts of those levels and making them more challenging. Who cares about the progression that much anyway? Both of them have their ups and downs. And you only have to play the first mission in the compulsory galaxies, other than that it’s just as free as galaxy 1 in terms of progression. ‘I’d argue that the focus on the space theme is absolutely important in a game called super Mario galaxy 2.’ Well, that’s how you choose to view the series. But frankly that sounds silly to me. Super Mario world didn’t have much focus on ‘world’ nor did mario land have much focus on ‘land.’ And when you get right down to it, a galaxy is just as broad as those things. Mario historically has never been designed around its setting - its setting is designed around the game. If you choose to apply importance to these themes (even if 2 still had a lot of those space themed galaxies. Seriously can we stop pretending 2 completely abandoned the space theme?) then go ahead, but I feel like if you were to complain about how the setting isn’t realistic enough in literally any other platformer you’d probably raise a LOT of eyebrows. That said I won’t deny the first game’s atmosphere made it special, but I don’t think it’s really enough to tip the scales in its favour. The game was also very easy - something I’ve began to notice on repeat playthroughs.
tbh new super mario bros music and well everything is more nostalgic to me than the original mario bros because i never played the original but on my DS i had new super mario bros (with the coin gimmick) Edit: and the new super mario bros Wii

That's probably the one issue I have with Galaxy 1, but it still doesn't bother me that much. And the reward for doing it all again does kinda suck.
Mario 3D World is super under appreciated. It will ALWAYS be my favorite game.

HHahahahahah a horrible 2D in 3D mario game generic
@@adamjulius7886 just came from him lol
Top 3 Mario platformer imo
Especially now
Not only is SMG2 my favorite mario game, but its my favorite game of all time!
Easily the best Mario game ever, and maybe the most perfect game Nintendo has ever made besides Super Metroid.
Lol final fantasy
Only the controls bother me so it's my second favorite behind number 3
I absolutely love these videos! I will admit that I’m rather disappointed there was no mention of Super Mario 64 DS, which is so different from the original I could see it getting its own spot on the list. Even if not, I do think it deserves a mention!
Thanks for the kind words. You're right, it is very different, but this list was only for the original Mario titles (Mario U being a slight exception since the deluxe version is identical for the most part). I probably should have made that clear in the intro!
no way, this guy only has 4k subs!!! he’s amazing
I would’ve put NSMB higher but I’m glad to see someone who gives it respect that it deserves :D
Edit: ok you’ve earned my respect for putting 3D Land that high
I’m so glad to see someone who’s favourite MARIO games are the galaxy series. Great video mate, you deserve more attention.
I know! I'm sitting in my chair wondering why nobody thinks this is the best game and then this pops up in my recommended and I almost agree with every choice
Like anyone else? Like why are you pretending it’s underrated
I have played them all and here is my top 10:
1 mario galaxy 2 (10/10)
2 mario galaxy 1 (9.9/10)
3 mario odyssey (9.8/10)
4 mario 64 (9.6/10)
5 mario 3d world (9.5/10)
6 mario sunshine (9.4/10)
7 mario 3d land (9.3/10)
8 mario bros wii (9.2/10)
9 mario world (9.1/10)
10 mario bros 3 (9/10)
Galaxy 2 is also my favorite Mario game. It is the most definitive Mario 3D game (other than odyssey). It has such a good balance of linear and open world gameplay. It also utilizes good gimmicks from past Mario games that weren’t seen in awhile while introducing its own.
Super Mario Galaxy is my all-time favourite game! I'm so happy I played it back in 2011. Such a good game(Yes, I know I played it late)
I only played it recently and I have to say with no nostalgia this is the best Mario game or game in general I have ever played
@@bluekirbyrocks You should play the second game too. If your first experience with galaxy 1 was the all stars port and you don't have a wii then that might be difficult. Definitely give it a try though if you can.
at my dad’s house, we have a homebrewed Nintendo Wii that the family shares. when i visit him next, i’ll see if i’ll be able to try
Mario Galaxy 2. meanwhile, i can play the first galaxy on switch
Best list ever! Almost all the placings on the list are exactly mine. You inspired me to make my own ranking of the Mario games.
RUclips finally getting my recommendations right. I got new stuff to binge
great video my guy, and respectable list. personally, my top 3 favourites are smb3, sm3d world, and galaxy. didn't play my whole way through galaxy as a kid, but i still loved it!
My opinion: SMB3 low-end (yes, I know this is weird, but it’s SO DANG HARD that I cannot have any major fun with it after world 1), SM3DW high-end and SMG middle (I don’t like intense emotions).
Who is Merio? I know just Mario.
Just kidding, nice video. Finally someone who appreciates Super Mario Land 2!
Glad to see Super Mario 3D World getting its recognition
This is the first best Mario countdown I have ever actually enjoyed
Wonderful video. You makes some great, in-depth analysis on each game.
Neat list. imo nothing beats 3d world, but this is an extremely well made video. I can't wait for more.
Hayden Groeschel Amen! I feel like 3D world doesn’t get enough love.
I agree with you so much. 3D World will always have a special place in my heart.

wow, someone who actually prefers Galaxy 2 over the original. I agree with you fully on that.
Same, Galaxy 2 is literally my favorite game ever and I was crying to see it on top.
@MAL MAL most people actually prefer the second game. It’s just that people aren’t as vocal about voicing that opinion since most people would expect a sequel to be better. Saying galaxy 2 is better would be like ‘duh.’ Whereas saying galaxy 1 is better is likely a more interesting opinion.
ok this reply thread legitimately baffles me??? very few things about galaxy 2 are better than the first.
I agree. Super Mario galazy 1 and 2 are amazing plattformer games. I love them and they are my childhood. I am gonna start playing them again! Thanks for this list.
I’m a typical 64 scrub. I grew up playing this on DS and console and now switch. It just holds a place in my heart
I agree with mario galaxy 2. So many fantastic memories with that game alone, it will always be my all time favorite, nothing will ever change that ❤
The angry sun and goomba shoe are present in mario maker and there's a similar power up to the hammer suit, the boomerang suit, and also capturing a hammer bro in mario odyssey
I always found the 2D Mario games to be far more smooth and natural. I wasn't a fan of how depth perception works in any of the 3D games.
Hmm what about 3D Land in 3D mode
The only thing I would change is Mario odyssey at number one.
It doesn't deserve it, galaxy 2 does

I agree with almost everything in this video. One little change I would make would be to swap New Super Mario Bros U with Wii. I just have a slight preference over the levels in the wii version.
The levels in Wii have too much empty space in them and feel like they were made specifically for multiplayer, whereas U's levels feel like a good fit for both single player and multiplayer imo.

Same! :)
SMB1 and SM64 are some of my favorites even if the later games surpassed them in content
NO ONE SAYS THEY DON’T LIKE SM64 OR THEY GO TO JAIL FOR 5 MONTHS!!

Super Mario Galaxy 2, New Super Mario Brows Wii. Super Mario’s Bros 3d world. Some of my favorite Mario games

Super Mario 64: You were blown away by the graphics back in the day.
Super Mario Sunshine: You like to be unique.
Super Mario 3D World: You like catchy music.
Super Mario Run: You have no games consoles but wanted play a Mario game.

Pretty solid list. I’d put odyssey, Mario 3, super world as 1,2,3. Can’t argue with someone that loves galaxy though
There it is again...'atmosphere.'
If you prefer the first game for this reason then go right ahead but I don't think you can really argue that it makes it better in the face of 2's improvements.

It’s funny how you described The Lost Levels as a ROM hack when Super Mario Bros. 2 is exactly that
