I agree, I have trouble with it too. I've still never beaten it without save states or warps(actually, I don't think I've ever beaten it with warps either.) It was the only one of the original 3 NES super mario games I didn't have as a kid, and I always wanted to play it when I went to my friends house that had. It's probably the mario game I have the most nostalgia for.
However, I just don't really like the game. I hate the awkward controls, which feel nothing like any other 2d mario game, the way I always seem to fall of(or fail to even grab) vines/ropes, how you can't jump on enemies like you can in every other mario game, those damn faces that chase you around when you get a key, and most of all(and the thing that makes this harder than more modern mario games) is the limited continues/permanent death(though I of course realize that was standard at the time.)
Hopefully one of these days I'll take the time to sit down and learn the game and get good at it, but it's not exactly on the top of my priority list.

I remember being five-years-old and playing the original Super Mario Bros and making it to World 8. I had made it to Level 8-3, but I was on my very last life. I was Fire Mario and had just made it past two sets of Hammer Brothers when my mom asked me what I wanted for lunch. Since I was distracted, however, I didn't see the Green Koopa Troopa careen right into me. I was instantly reduced to Mini Mario. I was almost at the Home Stretch when I had one more Hammer Brother to deal with. Since I lacked Fire Power, I had to think of a way to not only avoid the hammers, but swiftly get through. He would jump up and that was my cue to dash under him. I timed it exactly and made a dash for it. But, the Hammer Brother came down on Mario's head a second too late and I could only stare at the Game Over screen in frustration (I had no idea if you held down A + Start, you could start again at World 8 in those days, either).

I'm super late in responding to this comment, but it also makes the Hammer Bros chase Mario faster. In normal mode, 128 ticks of the timer after being spawned (~46 seconds), the Hammer Bros will move left to try to hit Mario instead of just standing in place.
In hard mode, they do it after 80 ticks of the timer (~30 seconds)

I honestly think Champion's Road and The Perfect Run should be swapped. Perfect Run is hard yes, but, like you said, its just a remixed version of Ultimate Test. You already have general knowledge on what to expect. It did kill me a good fifty-odd times back in then sure. Champion's Road however? It's true that separately the sections are mostly not too awful, but they aren't separate. It's a continually building never-ending stretch with no checkpoints and no power-up replacements.
And those previously "not awful" sections become daunting and the most anxiety-induced experience with Mario that I've ever had. What little leeway you have depends entirely on the power-ups you came into the level with. And how long you managed to keep them for.
Of course as a result of this difficulty there is little that can top the sheer high you get from reaching the "Thank You" message at the end. You kind of just have to take a moment, breath, and release the tension. Just don't screw up getting the top of the flagpole.

    • @sergraphix

def not ive played both an got champions road within like 10 tries an thats not even using peach. I've still have yet to beat the perfect run 10 years later -_- the ending without getting hit once is unbelievable literally the hardest part in any mario level history imo.

    • @GanondorfKingofEvil
      @GanondorfKingofEvil 2 года назад

@@sergraphix Might just be a difference in what we're better at.
Part of what can make Champion's Road tough is the camera. Which isn't a dig at it, but just a comment on the fixed camera in parts. Perfect Run really only becomes absurd at the inclusion of both Hammer and Boomerang Bros at the last section. With some luck and mindful routing it isn't too bad. Just stressful.

@@GanondorfKingofEvil what makes it even harder is that since you can’t get hit at all it means you’re forced to keep the cloud power up after you get it for the remainder of the level. Because you’re much floatier with the cloud suit it actually makes dodging the hammers a lot more difficult as your vertical mobility is compromised.

19: It's probably worth noting that if you don't keep hold of the Fire Flower, World 8-4 will be harder to complete with that lone Hammer Bro appearing before you face Bowser.
17: Fire Bar Sprint can be cheesed by playing as Nabbit. But if you think that Nabbit can help you get through Impossible Pendulums, just be aware that he can be knocked back by the Spinners.
15: Blue Yoshi + a Koopa Troopa shell, equals an easy clear on Tubular.
14: I don't know. Purple Coins in the Bone Pen seems to be the harder Power Star to get, simply because the timer is more strict (only 1 minute) when compared to Luigi's Purple Coins.
13: While the Lily Pad Ride course can be a pain, it is possible to get back to the starting point without losing a life. But you do need to tread carefully to avoid falling into an abyss, or the toxic water.
11: No need to argue about Pendulum Castle being the hardest NSMBU course, but the Challenge Mode challenges that involve that course really adds insult to injury.
7: Long Journey's End may be the final challenge, but Invisible Road: Rush! just feels downright absurd. You expect me to go through that without Cappy? What was Nintendo thinking there!?
5: The SNES version of The Lost Levels is not as hard as its original Famicom counterpart, and it actually makes World D-4 more forgiving by making each Hammer Bro advance toward Mario (or Luigi), instead of just staying at one spot. Also, Bowser only throws hammers, so you don't have to worry about him spitting fire as well.
3: The Super Leaf makes Champion's Road easier to overcome, which is good when you realize that you have to complete it as every playable character to achieve 100% completion.
2: The Perfect Run truly is the hardest base game course that I've ever come across. The Ultimate Test is tame (thanks to having Checkpoint Flags) when compared to that.
1: White Raccoon Mario does make the Impossible Pack more manageable, but even then, you still have to watch out for the fatal hazards.

    Hardest level in each game:
SMB: 8-3 (So many Hammer Bros!)
Lost Levels: C-3 (The game is hard so…)
SMB 2: 5-1 (Log jumping is hard)
    SMB 3: 8-Airship (Infamously difficult)
Land: 4-3 (Last level is the hardest)
World: Tubular (I hate the P Balloon)
Land 2: Mario Castle (I love this!)
64: Rainbow Ride (Made to be impossible)
Sunshine: Pachinko Machine (I still can’t win it)
NSMB: 8-7 (Has a bowser boss fight)
Galaxy: Ultimate Test (It’s a test)
NSMB Wii: 9-7 (Ice, ice, and ice)
Galaxy 2: Perfect Run (Too much enemies)
3D Land: 8-Crown (Only hard part of the game)

NSMB U Deluxe: Firebar Spring (Ugh!)

If Super Mario Run counts, then I think the story modes of Super Mario Maker 2 and Super Mario Maker 3DS should, as well. Anyway, fun list.
I personally think that in Odyssey, the bunny boss rush in Dark Side is harder than the challenge gauntlet of Darker Side, and in Lost Levels, C-3 can go f itself.
Two small tips, in Lost Levels D-4 I found it easiest to jump when the hammer bro does, best by lining up the windows of the hammer bro's jump and the piranha plant not being there. The wind actually helps you somewhat, as you'll get momentum quickly to make the jump in time.
And in SMG2's Perfect Run, you can duck below the boomerangs at the very end. This was extremely helpful as it gave me some time to gather my thoughts.

I actually put champions road above perfect run. Despite perfect run having much less room for error, I find it harder to avoid making mistakes in champions road than in perfect run, so I ended up finding that to be slightly harder as a result. Granted Ive only ever done it playing as toad, so its possible I'd think differently if I ever tried it as peach or rosalina. Have never got any of the dlc for smb2 so cant comment on that.

I've beaten 9 of the levels on this list so far. I've beaten every mainline Mario game except for Sunshine and Galaxy 2 so far, but those games' hardest levels are optional.
SMB2 5-1 - I beat the game going through 5-1 after this video. It's not too bad, especially with Peach. I've had a lot more trouble with the last level, 7-2.
SMB1 8-3 - This is the only World 8 level with two power-ups and I found it's not so hard if you get under the blocks to defeat the Hammer Bros. 8-4 might be harder because the last room is hard to beat without a power-up and if you don't know which pipes to go down it can be even harder. 8-1 is also the longest stage in the game with no Mushroom or Fire Flower.
NSMB 8-T2 - This was the first Super Mario game I beat and that was about 10 years ago so I don't remember what gave me the most trouble. I remember 8-1 was pretty hard though.
SML 4-2 - Any of the levels in World 4 are hard in general. I kept dying to Tatanga in 4-3. When I replayed the game in December I beat all the levels pretty quickly, though.

Wario's Castle - It did take me quite a few tries to get though this one. Finding the right pattern to get through the first room. I died at the moving platform at 8:52 about 3 times, I kept getting the wrong timing to jump on and off of it and it's awkwardly placed. Luckily I think I beat Wario on my first try, or maybe 1 death.
Rainbow Ride 100 coins - So I get this on the DS version. I haven't got it on the 3D All-Stars version yet, but I'll try it.
SMB3 8-Airship - I completely agree this is the hardest level, none of the other levels in World 8 beat it. The first time I beat the game I died about 40 times on 8-Airship, way more than any other level. The Rocky Wrenches in addition to platforming on the airships make it particularly hard. The Tanooki Suit is a huge help on this one.
Long Journey's End - I think this took me a few days. I had the first sections practiced a ton by the time I beat it. I also wanted to beat it with no skips to make it harder. The Pokio section is the hardest as it's hard to time and you die in the bottomless pit if you mess up. I got so good at this moon I speedran it a few times back then.
3D Land S8-Crown - I was 12 when the game released and I beat the level after a few days to maybe a week, but it was hard.
I haven't beaten Make the Cut in Super Mario Run yet, it's course at launch I haven't beaten and I definitely agree it's the hardest.
So I might try beating SMW Tubular, SM64 RR 100 coins, SMR Make the Cut, and the NSMB2 Impossible Pack if I buy it. With the others I'm not close to unlocking them. And I beat SMB2 5-1 after watching this video.
