Samantha Sang was soul singer from Australia, and make no mistake folks the Bee Gees were R & B singers (that is how they thought of themselves). She worked with them before and visited them in France, while they were recording songs for SNF. Barry and Robin wrote this song for her. The Gibb Brothers wrote many songs for other artists. You should check out Yvonne Elliman's "Love Me", another song written by Robin and Barry. Yvonne was originally suppose to sing How Deep Is Your Love for the SNF soundtrack, they had intended the song for her. Their manager had her the demo and told then to keep the song. Yvonne ended up with If I Cant Have You.

"Emotion" written by Barry and Robin Gibb. It was first recorded by Australian singer Samantha Sang, whose version reached number three on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1978. Barry Gibb provided harmony and background vocals with his signature falsetto.

This is not a mash up of a Samantha Sang and a Bee Gees record. This is Samantha Sang's 'hit record from 1978, with only Barry Gibb of The Bee Gees singing harmony, backup vocals and co-producing the song. Barry and Robin Gibb wrote the song. The Bee Gees recorded their own version much later in 1994.

Samantha Sang was an Aussie singer that the Bee Gees had known since the 1960s. They either wrote this for her, or wrote it and thought she would suit it. This was the original version of Emotion released.

They made it for her to sing, to the best I can remember, but it’s quite obviously in their vocal range as well! They had those beautiful voices, but I think their harmony can be accredited to their birth…it seems harmony with your siblings is as natural as breathing! Of course they did have amazing voices individually as well, as did Samantha Sang.

She was a one-hit wonder with a very big memorable song!!!
Bee Gees were the songwriters and back in 77-78…the BeeGees’s DOMINATED the Billboard charts! Seemed everything they touched during the Disco/SNF era was guaranteed gold!!! They dominated the charts like Beatles did during the mid 60’s.
Samantha’s voice was so perfectly sexy/sultry for this song. A song I never get tired listening to (I’m not sure bout the other listeners here, but I wasn’t a fan of the Destiny’s Child remake).
Yvonne Elliman should be on your radar “If I Can’t Have You” (was actually on the SNF soundtrack…and another penned BeeGees tune). 🤙🏽

"Emotion" was written by Barry and Robin Gibb. It came out in 1977 with Samantha Sang on vocals and Barry doing all the layered background harmonies. It has been covered by different artists since then, though. Destiny's Child recorded a version in 2001, and the Bee Gees themselves did it in 1994 (later released in 2001 also).

This is one of those songs that I had the lyrics wrong until not too long ago.
"I cry me a river. That leads to erosion." It made sense. Rivers lead to erosion. Even though she says it as "Your-osion". I just thought she didn't say it right. It made sense for decades!!
Back in the day, it was hard to figure out the lyrics sometimes unless they printed them on the album or CD sleeve. Not many did. I also thought she was Black for a long time, like Bobby Caldwell.

I just heard part of this song in the movie

And what better way to hear a good song than watching yall react to it? So I did a RUclips search and there you two were. Cool.
Oh -- you will want to watch the movie
"Roll Bounce". Sort of a cult classic now.
Based on a group of rollerskating friends who lose their neighborhood roller rink and decide to visit the more upscale rink on the Northside.
Fun movie. Full of funny one liners. And packed full of 70's music. Including The Bee Gees.

I LOVE your reactions!! Emotion and their hit songs for YVONNE ELLIMAN - LOVE ME and IF I CAN’T HAVE YOU - led to Barbra Streisand calling and askzing Barry for a song. (...so you MUST react to both to hear what Barbra did!!) He asked to write and produce a whole album, and she accepted. It was VERY successful with multiple hits (WOMAN IN LOVE, GUILTY and WHAT KIND OF FOOL - the last 2 being duets with Barry), then followed by super successful albums for Kenny Rogers (including a duet with Dolly Parton ISLANDS IN THE STREAM), Dionne Warwick HEARTBREAKER, and Diana Ross with CHAIN REACTION, which she just recently sang at the queen’s jubilee. They also wrote and provided backing vocals on IMMORTALITY for Celine Dion. Please react to their live performance of it with her at their One Night Only concert in Vegas. Thanks for keeping the music alive!!

I love this song, especially Samantha Sang's version with The Bee Gees. 😊😊😊
Growing up in the 60's and 70's was different. There was usually only two real radio stations available in most towns (other than AM news and churches asking for cash). There was one country station, and one for pretty much everything else. And there weren't a lot of non-radio options. So most people were exposed to a lot of different genres of music. That turned out to be a very good thing.

The Bee Gees wrote it for Samantha Sang. It was her name on the record. The Bee Gees sang backup. You have to go back to this era to understand that during the Saturday Night Fever days, The Bee Gees were on the radio CONSTANTLY. It seemed like you'd hear them twice or three times an hour. And if you flipped around from station to station (like most radio listeners do), you might hear them 6 or 7 times an hour.
At one point, the rock dawgs of the time got so sick of The Bee Gees that WLUP/Chicago disc jockey Steve Dahl led a disco record burning in the outfield of Comisky Park between games of a Cubs double-header. The response was so overwhelming that the field was ruined and the second game had to be canceled. It created a huge bit of national publicity, and suddenly The Bee Gees went from being wildly popular to poison. All of a sudden, radio stations wouldn't play them after seeing this huge public pushback on them. So The Bee Gees retreated from releasing much of their own music and starting writing songs for other artists. Samantha Sang was one of the first to benefit from this. Other artists who recorded songs written by The Bee Gees include Olivia Newton-John, Yvonne Elliman, Frankie Valli, Jimmy Ruffin, Dionne Warwick, Diana Ross, Barbra Streisand, and the duo of Dolly Parton and Kenny Rogers. Of those songs, two of the best were "Woman In Love" by Barbra Streisand ruclips.net/video/CzQPJy8Q6qE/видео.html and "Islands In the Stream" by Dolly Parton and Kenny Rogers ruclips.net/video/UaNGtgYwSsU/видео.html

They wrote songs for other artists because the radio stations in the states banned playing the beegees after they always were on the top of the charts for so long. So BG's just said well here's island in the stream, here's guilty etc

The song was written by Barry and Robin for Samantha sang they actually taught together in the and the Bee gees play backup vocals her voice was just the type of voice that would mesh with the Bee gees Barry should find her and do concerts with her again it'll never be the Bee gees but it would be very close.

No, only Barry sang background on this recording. He layered his voice to do the harmonies.

I've once heard on the radio or TV someone explaining that members of a same family who sing together will always harmonize better than those who are not related. Their voices naturally tune to the same frequency due to the fact that they share the same DNA. It makes a lot of sense and you guys will be able to observe it whenever you react to musical groups of siblings.

True, but in this case it was just one brother - Barry - who did the backing vocals. He layered his voice.

The song was written in 1978 for Samantha Sang by The Bee Gees or more exactly Barry and Robin. And, yes, they sang backup even so much that it a some points sounds like The Bee Gees.
In 2001 Destiny's Child made a great version that went number 3 in the UK and number 8 in the US.
The Bee Gees recorded it themselves in 1994 but it was first released in 2001 also, on their "Greatest Hits: The Record"
