Considering how John tended to have bad luck in RDR2, like - Getting shot a couple of times, pert-near freezing to death and then eaten by wolves all in one day, getting caught and working on a chain-gang - I think even Arthur would've been impressed how much John had grown, not just as a gunfighter, but also as a man.

Yes and no. Dutch implies that the feds has to find a different target at any cost. In reality, there will always be dangerous, evil people with malicious intentions. That is why the FBI was created to begin with, their job is to keep the innocent from living among criminals. John Marston's crimes would have gotten him hanged if he wasn't shot on his ranch anyways

I believe one of the worst personality traits John has is selfishness. All from the first game, the second one and even when he ran away abandoning his whole family.. i believe John to be very selfish and that plays a lot in his whole character arch.

Arthur gave his life for the John's family, John preserved his family, and Jack avenged them.
One thing I regret about the sequel is there weren't more side missions with Arthur and John, the same with Arthur and Sadie. From original clips, it looks like Arthur and Sadie were supposed to have made to New Austin, and that I think could've made for some cool game play.
On a sidenote: John was a man who had scruples, questionable at times, but scruples nevertheless, and in Mexico he was playing a game meant for people who really have none. I mean yes John had his own agenda, that of rescuing his family, but considering the harm he ended up bringing to those who were innocent, in my opinion it makes his ultimate mission very questionable, maybe not so much his mission, but definitely the means he took in order to achieve it.
There was a line that Dutch says in a camp conversation while reading Evelyn Miller to Arthur, about how "the most important thing is results, not necessarily the means," which is a horrible and bullshit way to attempt to absolve oneself from personal responsibility for what they do, and here John is essentially doing the same thing.
John may have had a nobler agenda than Reyes and Alende, but his actions in trying to achieve it in some way really do not give him much of a moral high ground, if any at all, really. No he may not be inflicting the pain that say Alende is on the poor folk of that region, nor the future harm Reyes would go on to inflict in the future, but he definitely played a huge part, and does bear responsibility for it.
Makes you wonder if Abigail and Jack were aware of what happened in Mexico and role John played in the events that happened there and how his actions hurt those who were innocent, how they would've looked at John trying to save them? Would they have been grateful, or would they have looked at John paying too high a price to protect and free them?
And in regards Abraham Reyes, what he did after getting power is not at all surprising. Considering how he in effect betrayed Luisa, of course he would betray the people he claimed to be fighting for. The man/woman who will betray others, even it is supposedly for you, will also betray you at some point. People who are truly honorable will never put themselves in a position where they would have to do something like that, and if someone does, that shows you who they truly are.

Well seeing as in the base game you can take Arthur to Austin and he'll draw for locations and collect the bones to give to MacGuiness plus have a cutscene with her, also in the game guide, it's Arthur pictured in the Legend of the East outfit, then yes there were plans for him to go to Austin

I disagree entirely that John's intentions/actions were cruel nor that he was absolving himself of what he did in mexico. This feels like you are erasing a lot of things john said directly to rayes and many people. He advised him to be faithful and good several times, but john is not an army and he was simply hoping to get what he could and run, that's not absolvement it's helplessness against something much bigger than himself. Let's say he guns down reyes? Reyes army would just kill him in mexico a long way away from his family. Everything he did, everything that happened were due to the cruel intentions of FBI agents(former Pinkertons) and their callous use of the "law" to get results. That is the overarching crime and i feel like something people miss in this. John had no choice. He detested the things he had to do, but his goal was to be get away and be with his family - it was only due to the actions of the Predecessor Villain Agent Milton and the villain Agent Ross that we see John do these terrible things, and even then in general John only does what he does in defense. Very few if any times will john encounter enemies that will not shoot him on sight just for laying eyes on him. He even lets bill shoot him while trying to peacefully disarm him because John did not want to befall harm to someone, even if they had crossed him before. John shows a few times that he hates having to be anywhere but home, and that's the true testament to John to me. He hates everything the government sends him to do and is a deeply thoughtful person and it's no wonder his son became a book writing philosopher of sorts(or at least an author anyway).
As far as what Abigail and Jack were or were not aware of, i think the bigger impact to know is that they didn't get a chance to hear about it or John's thoughts on the matter because John was murdered by the united states government in a major betrayal of John and the ideas of justice after everything he did to bring the stupid big dong of the law down on people as they requested and they essentially killed abigail as well. Now is john a saint? No, not in any way. But he also didn't deserve to be gunned down in cold blood after a months long escapade across the geographical southern Americas to kill people at the behest of the US government like some paid assassin(What was he being paid to do that work? Were they going to kill Jack if he didn't do it? Abigail? Or was it just taking his farm away? No, i think they promised him freedom and never intended to pay up)
Killing John was NOT the good action people pretend it was because "john was a bad man" or "he killed people". Killing is bad, sure but killing them back after they have reformed and vowed to become better people leaving a fatherless son and a mother without means in a time where women would be hard-pressed to survive on their own was cruel and thoughtless. They've perpetuated a cycle of violence. Jack grew up to be a gunslinger in his own right and he even gunned down a former FBI member in mexico. If they wanted to make a better world, they needed to put john to work on it and listen to what he had to say instead of demeaning him, dehumanizing him, and destroying him when he wasn't of any use. John could have been the agencies biggest asset - a window into the mind of criminals like dutch van der linde and the poor people who were lost to him for a long time.
But just like the real FBI, they are racist, classist, and destroyers of this fine nation. They would take a coin from a dead mans eye and kill his family just to see their idea of what's right come to be - rather than real justice. They killed MLK after all.

Wow. I appreciate the story of RDR1 and RDR2. The end of RDR2 John reaches Armadillo plagued with cholera, which caused by Herbert Moon selling his soul to the devil. He’s forced to back and kill his old gang by the Edgar Ross (Pinkerton of his past or devil) and we start in Armadillo. Reyes find us like cholera bc he will be a plague to Mexico because he lost his soul. RDR is about a lot of lost people looking for redemption through vengeance disguised as (justice, rebellion, order, freedom, dictatorship)

John killed them over a hat and him getting annoyed at the end of the day really, those three posed no legitimate threat and he knew that, this is the man who confidently walked to Bill by himself so I don't think he really so those three as a credible threat also with who was around. John just wasn't having it and showed them why you just let a outlaw keep walking. I don't think that is being "willingly ignorant" it is showing that while John is a family man of morals and a code to some degree he is still a violent and cold outlaw. They don't need justification nor should it always be given because the game spells out that sometimes these guys live up to their reputation as killers, not vigilantes, not bounty hunters, killers. These guys are the protagonist but they aren't hero and never were nor do I think the game ever tries to say that . I always took that scene in Mexico as the devs reminding us that John, while he usually doesn't will kill anyone at anytime and is more than capable of doing so. I feel like the whole redemption thing gest lost on people. John isn't redeemed at all until he is shot and killed until then he is outlaw bandit no matter how much he tries to change it as we see in that scene it is who he is at teh end of the day and it who he will always be and again I think that scene shows that perfectly.

RDR2 has better graphics, more content and an impressive open world, but for some reason I still think RDR1 is a better game.
It might be nostalgia influencing my opinion, but I just love the overall world building of RDR1. The best parts of the game, in my opinion, is the quiet moments where there’s nothing happening. It’s just the player and John reflecting on the journey. RDR2 doesn’t let the player think, it always throws something at you.

I'm about to be really mean to this section but if you like it that's cool, all just my opinion.
I appreciate it places John firmly in the morally grey teritory, but honestly I really did not like the mexico portion of this game. Forced to endure some of the worst atrocities in the whole series was just uncomfortable and infuriating. Plus John threatening Ross and not wanting to kill Dutch makes him very grey anyway.
In addition, I was really looking forward to meeting Javier and have him serve as the villian like Bill was in the first part, and Dutch was in the finale. But no John just screams his name a bunch and then he's in two scenes, one if you decide to kill him.
Even worse they imply Bill and Javier would work together which sounds really interesting and fun, but all that happens is they hold out on killing Bill for no reason when it would have been perfect to fight him at Fort Mercer.
Other than Landon Rickets who is the coolest character ever in the few scenes it just feels like annoying filler to me. Just a mundane cycle of "Where's Javier??", "Idk do these horrible things for me and maybe I'll find him for you". Which just makes it worse with the cop-out that the Government was hiding Javier and Bill the whole time.
Also I just really hate Rayes, not as much as those government douchebags but the fact that he's also an asshole in his own right just makes the ending feel hollow, Luisa was done so dirty.

To be fair, it's not all John's doing. He's in Mexico because he has too. There's power behind John going into Mexico, and that's Ross and the Pinkerton agency. See, they let John handle this with no supervision! I fault them. Anything to bring in Bill and Javier. Had Ross been more involved and had seen where this mission was headed, it may have been different. Ross dealing with Allende, while John interacted with A. Reyes.

The pinkertons aren’t shit compared to the Bureau, they aren’t even related besides some agents being previously pinkertons like Ross. And the reason he’s not supervised is bc what Ross is doing would be highly illegal by todays standards having John essentially do governments work, but also bc the Bureau has no jurisdiction in Mexico, once Bill and Javier got there they were basically free and Mexico being such a highly corrupt country at the time wouldn’t have helped the US government, so John had to go alone bc Ross wasn’t gonna let Bill go that easy bc Bill is just another trophy for Ross career
