Welcome to the Heavy Spoilers show, I'm your host Paul and this video we're breaking down House Of The Dragon.

Season 2 Episode 2 is packed with easter eggs and this civil war sees brother vs brother. Throughout this video we're gonna go through it all and talk about everything you might have missed. I also wanna go over the major book differences as well as some of the characters that they talk about. As always the heavy spoilers will be saved until the end of the video and I'll give you a heads up before we get to that point. With that out the way though thank you for clicking this, now let's get into House Of The Dragon.

Now we pick up in the aftermath of blood and cheese and see the blood bed sheets being carried by a servant. This scene is later reflected in the mattress which we sees completely covered in blood. The staff and servants are all assembled and the hounds are called in to hunt through the keep.
The book explains what happened in these moments with this passage explaining their fates.
Strange to say, the ratcatcher and the butcher were true to their word. They did no further harm to Queen Helaena or her surviving children, but rather fled with the prince’s head in hand. A hue and cry went up, but Cheese knew the secret passageways as the guards did not, and the killers made their escape.

I think it just shows how ill prepared Aegon was to be King. He doesn't know how to make decisions and acts impulsively.
Alicent promoted him 1st after he murdered someone in public. I think, he is consistent on being able to fail his way upwards!

I feel like the family v family is so symbolic of the fracturing of the realm as a whole as well as the fracturing between Rheanyra and Daemon
You can tell them apart by their swords. One has a typical longsword and the other a saber with a guard as best i can tell on first watch. Once the leg wound is dealt then pay attention to sword he had and you should be able to distinguish who is who after the swords are lost. Erryk starts with longsword and arryk with the sword that has a handguard, maybe a saber.
Watching Arryk and Erryk kill each other was just heartbreaking. They were both good men caught in a vicious family feud. Oh, and I hate Ser Criston with a passion.

Criston Cole is the worst character in the story. Without question. I feel the most sympathy for Helena. As far as I can tell the only completely innocent victim in all of it.
I never like Criston Cole in the books version. I thought he started the whole damn thing. King Maker by foot.
They really doubled down on his dirtbagedness in the show and I highly enjoy it. He's not cool in the text and he's even not cooler in the show.

The scene where Otto learns Criston Cole's plan had me laughing for several straight minutes.
The look of absolute misery when Aegon says "he's going as his twin, brilliant!" Was hysterical to me.

Alicent and Otto are seeing the consequences of their actions. Alicent has bred hatred in her sons for Rhaenyra and her sons since they were children. Why wouldn’t Aegon suspect Rhaenyra and want her dead? Alicent has told him numerous times that Rhaenyra would kill him if she came to power. Otto is sorry that Viserys is dead?! Really? I thought he couldn’t wait to get Aegon on the throne. How could they think Aegon malleable when they ignored him his entire life? Why should he listen to them? Where were they when he was growing up? These two are unreal.
Alicent didn’t do that Viserys bred the hate for not being a good father to them are you dumb?
I think Otto thought he would be able to control his grandson and in turn he’d be more the true king. But now things are going totally off the rails and he misses Viserys way of “kinging”.
RIGHT!! Alicent isn’t even interested in absolution even when she knows she is being punisned. And Otto doesn’t see how his actions are causing a ripple effect in his House. I feel bad for Aegon and the rest of Alicent’s children because they never really cared for them. Only tools to aid their agenda.

I was so happy when Aegon told him to f off, I literally said: "Yes, Otto, this is your life now, what the hell did you think would happen?!?!" out loud.
Finally Daeron mentioned. And Arryk vs Erryk was so emotional.

You know team Green is a hot mess when Otto Hightower is the good guy in this episode. I can't believe Alicent didn't console Aegon but I'm also not suprised. Rhaenyra and Daemon aren't doing to well and looks like Daemon may go on a war path. That should be exciting!
Contrast that with Rhaenyra immediately comforting Jace. Whatever sympathy I had for Alicent evaporated in that moment

ETA Otto refusing to listen to Alicent when she's trying to confess to him to unburden her conscience is immediately echoed when she refuses to comfort her son in his grief. Pass on that generational trauma, as if it needed your assistance.

It can be easy to lose the human cost when looking upon grand schemes. What makes a great leader, is being able to balance the two side of the coin against one another. Be benevolent when you absolutely can, but also not weak when needed and, to follow on Allicent's former sentiment, Aye, violence is necessary, but it need not be wonton.
Aegon is Otto’s grandson. Jaehaerys was his oldest great grandson that was assassinated.
Ser Arryk commiting Sepuku without hesitation was intense, but also showed his honor and love for his brother. That was gold!!
There’s a great little moment when Aegon and Otto are going at it. Aegon says that his father made him king and Otto responded with a laugh and asked him if that’s what he thinks, then moves on. I like it because Otto made him king and portrays his feelings about that act perfectly and his dedication to his long term plans. He doesn’t cut down his grandson by telling him the truth despite hating him at that moment.
Played perfectly, Otto is my favorite gamer in this season so far.
I don't know how to break this to you, but that laugh and the "Is that what you think" was absolutely Otto telling him the truth. Add the "Your father was right about you", and now Aegon knows his father did not choose him, his mother (from his perspective) lied to his face, and his son died because of this illegitimate reign. Why do you think he broke down like that in the end?
@@MurasakiMonogatari aegon was far too stupid/drunk/enraged to figure out the laugh and comment himself in that moment. Otto would have needed to actually say the words for his grandson to have understood the meaning.
Maybe it came to him later in the final scene when he’s crying but I really think it went over his head
I think the flowers and dust scenes are foreshadowing the ash that will fall from the war. Might be a reach but seems like Helena and rhaenyra are seeing the inevitable
Yeah. I felt ashes from Dragon fire. They keep slipping in these little things about dragons fighting. I still believe it was Vaghor that killed Lucerys bc he felt Aemonds rage. Not Aemonds intent.

Arryk and Erryk having to fight to the death was the first time I’ve felt sad over a death in this show. And it solidifies my hatred of Criston Cole. What a hypocritical, devious pos. What he did was evil. He knew it would get Arryk killed but he forced him to do it regardless. 😡
I don't understand this stupidity. I know Criston is impulsive and hates Rhaenyra (its been more than 10 years, get over it already), but to send out Sir Arryk to do the deed? He's just a bully at this point. Don't wanna take responsibility for what happened so he punishes the ones who are easy target. Made him earn some brownie points from Aegon, so good luck with that I guess.
It’s also a bad move because what if Arryk was convinced by Erryk to come to the blacks side. You just gave them another Kingsguard a valuable resource and they could’ve seen Arryk back to kill Aegon the way he was going to kill Rhaynera
Criston was projecting so hard with the purity and fidelity line when he walked up on Arryk, he was literally Bedding the Kings Mom, and got called out with everyone else, so he gets mad at the ONLY person who had a real reason for not being able to protect the young prince (Arryk was actively guarding the king and his friends)
The most craziest part here is the young king killed a lot of rat catchers like nothing, I can understand his son got killed, and otto lost his shit, this episode a lot of killing
About Otto and his daughters sins, he knew, he’s known for a little bit as we see his look from episode one. He didn’t want to hear it, he didn’t want to have to fix that issue on his way out.
The top 3 moments for me were:
1. Otto and talking to Aegon the Fool lmao, it was such a crazy and fun conversation
2. Helaena trying to grieve. It was such a beautiful set of scenes with her managing her own autonomy but having to sacrifice it for Aegon's sake
3. Arryk vs Erryk, as a twin myself, I could really feel the tension in that entire scene
The Daemon and Rhaenyra is a close 3rd honestly, that whole scene with Rhaenerya not being able to trust him was beautifully done
Overall though, like you said, it was just a BEAUTIFULLY acted performance from EVERYONE was on high octane
I still love Alicent but it really broke my heart that she didn’t console Aegon. Otto didn’t want to hear Alicent’s confession. And Aegon didn’t approach Helaena. I see the pattern of “I don’t know how to deal with this, I’m out”

I didn't like Aegon in the last season but I thought the actor's performance in these last 2 episode has been top notch. To be fair though the performances have been stellar all around

The impression i got was, Otto thinks Alicent sinned lied about the wishes of Viserys to get Aegon on the throne. No single clue about Criston Cole.
You see him give her and Cole a strange look when they walk in to the small council meeting.
Otto knows about Allicent & Cole, he just doesn’t care. To him I believe it’s a means to get one more person in the king’s ear under their influence to further their plans.
Larys knows for sure and would 100% tell Otto
The way George wrote this book is such a great way to get a way with so much more while telling a great story. Basically every inconsistentecy can be explained away by the fact that it's all from the point of view of people who weren't there who have their own individual motive to tell the story a certain way

My fav part of the episode is how fast the BROTHER got to DragonSTone from Kings Landing. He got there in minutes.
This was a great episode. I really, really felt for Helaena. Sad dude. Daemon and Rhaenerya had a great extended scene. I totally bought in. Ser Clitston has so much guilt that he's picking on folk. This family is totally torn up. The Greens actually seem way more dysfunctional at the moment. That brother vs brother scene was a hard watch too. I like the way they did it. They killed each other.
Erryk killed himself and I understand. Being twins, learning and joining the Kingsguard and then getting divide over petty sibling fight and having to kill your closest kin who was ordered the murder of the one you're sworn to protect. Bad place to be in.

On Ser Erryck, 'seppuku' is a pretty specific Japanese ritual. This is just 'falling on one's sword' that's the more broad term we'd use for that act in this case.

I didnt think id tear up with the twins. They did the whole bit soooooo well. And rhaneyra tearing up. Shes already so lost and losing loyal people left and right.
This episode really made me understand aegon ii anger. He wasn’t the one who demanded Lukes death but he had to repay it with his own son. It also made me look at daemon in a bad light.
For a minute I felt Otto’s disappointment. Especially when Aegon told him Criston sent Arryk to kill Rhaenrya .You could feel the frustration seeping out of Otto’s every word.

it was so peak when he kicked the dog but looking back he was only making the dog run away to avoid being killed or seeing his owner being killed etc, so he was being nice
We know Daemond wanted pretty much anyone they could find because Blood actually says to Cheese "...a son for a son, he said" So even though they cut away leaving us hanging for an answer, we get the delayed response in Bloods' voice as to what Daemond said to them. And it doesn't come off as a reinterpretation or paraphrasing. It seems a direct quote of what Daemond said.
They finally mentioned Daeron!!! Wow lol Otto was bad ass this ep
I do want to see a final showdown with Criston and Rhaeynra with him screaming you broke my heart it's not too late for us to cross the Narrow Sea lol. When I'm with Alicent, I only think of you.
I am actually feeling bad for Aegon. Alicent and Otto only want to manipulate him. She can't even comfort him because she can't "pretend" since no one is watching. He was not "malleable" that moment.

I particularly notice the fire light rapidly flicking off the walls chaotically as Aegon orders Otto to remove his badge, and Otto struggling to try to think his way out of it.
Calling Ser Munch a Lot a wet wipe is wild (and accurate)😂😂
For Aemond to go to the brothel & engages in a consensual arrangement, which he also opens up about his personal worries & concerns with the actual madam, rather than engaging with women his own age, it reveals that Aemond is receiving the gratification that he has been seeking, yet missing from his current life with his mother & family. On top of all of those pressing worries & concerns as well as all of his burdens piling up, Aemond craves for his mother's love & attention b/c in the scene when Aemond was at the brothel fully naked and then decides to lay on the madam's lap in a fetal position, this scene clearly reveals that Aemond has a long list of mommy issues. Although the above are purely speculative which are based from my personal observations, as such, I could be completely incorrect in my observations within this series' storyline.🤔
This is my favorite part after watching the show is running to watch your breakdowns. Thank you for all you do Paul! 🤗

Loved this episode the twins fight was so sad. The dog being sad about cheese was sad. And I found myself really starting to hate alicent. She is more worried about getting pipe then she is comforting her mourning children like she sees ageon wailing and is just like nah imma go find Cole 😤

I think when Helena was looking up at the sky when people were throwing confetti stuff into the air at the funeral she saw ashes falling in the future, and the same for Rhaenyra when she was looking at the dust fall in the room through the sunlight she was seeing ashes fall in her future too

Aegon asked his mother once if she loved him and she never answered him. Alicent walks in on him crying, clearly needing comfort and love and she walks away. Obviously, she cares about him, but love?? No. I don't think she does. The only one she seems concerned about is Helena.

The Hightower grandfather telling Allison that he didn't care to hear about her troubles was definitely him saying, "I don't care about your personality problems." I don't see how that was him being loving or helpful...
He was basically saying “I don’t want to know the shame you’ve brought upon our house”
I somehow feel that Alicent is the way she is all because of how she was corrupted by her father Otto in the first place. The lack of concerns from Otto also shows her upbringing and to her children as well. It carries down.

There was some great symbolism and reading between the lines in this ep.
They're contrasting both rulers to show how their inherent strengths and weaknesses affects the war. Aegon is reckless and impulsive and his decision to kill the rat catchers and fire Otto- has weakened him greatly. Contrasted with Rhaenyra who showed compassion and forgiveness to Mysaria, and in return this saved her life.
I also think the fight between the twins is an alogory for the show itself and the fall of House Targaryen- Brothers fighting, but just ending in pointless bloodshed and death.
Otto looks like one of the evil brothers in little Nicky
See, i was confused at the scene with jace and baela. They spoke about fathers then she asked about her uncle i thought viserys because shes daemons daughter. Thanks for clearing that up, this episode was great.

Atto spilled the beans that Aegon is the actual userper. That's why Atto got fired in the show. He knew the truth. Aegon is not the real king.

Arryk and Erryk😢 what an emotional scene for two characters that really didn’t have a ton of screen time. You really understood the dilemma of an “unnecessary family fight” becoming a life and death feud. Those actors did fantastic.

Really believe they are doing a really good job setting up helena’s grief which later turns insanity because of how no one really pays her much comfort and thats to say aegon and alicent theres no compassion on the greens.
I do not believe Daemon told blood and cheese to saw of his nephews head... He even says to Rhaenyra "you think me some kind of monster"
I love how they leave it ambiguous. We don't see how Daemon responded to the question "What if we can't find Aemond?". I love that we can now argue rather Daemon gave him the direct order, or if he said something else.
@VendettaPSC when blood and cheese are searching one of the rooms, one of em mentions "no head, no gold", so they needed proof, hence a "head" was likely asked for

That arrow bolt almost hitting Jacerys is some major foreshadowing. The coin over Aemonds eye too, it had the gods symbol on it and he will die above Gods Eye, plus the painting of Harrenhal behind him
