Funny coincidence (Luke Cage spoilers?) I'm rewatching Luke Cage and during season 1 when Mariah is framing Luke she tells the waitress (after giving her the money for framing Luke) "You never know what someone's capable of" We later find out the waitress already knew Mariah had killed Cottonmouth herself and Mariah saying it was a kind of confirmation for her that she was too far gone; I think Sofia's was similar, except her saying it was only indicating she didn't really buy Oz's story
When the penguin and Vic are going between trains, he looks at two open handicapped seats but refuses to sit in them even though he could. He refuses to let his foot cripple him.
This will be the Andor of the DC Universe. Understated, but potentially amazing and talked about for years to come. Thank GAWD there are still SOME intelligent writers in Hollywood
The eyes , the eyes are luckily recognizable as I know it is him! If I had not known yes he would have been unrecognizable and anyhow apart from the prosthetics , the limp was all him! No help ! Great acting
I love all the subtle nods to the Sopranos. When Oz leaves the city for the countryside it was like watching the Sopranos intro, his mom's house and neighborhood looks just like Livia's, and even the farmhouse property had a similar look to Hesch's house.
The song says Put the Blame on Mame. Oz says it doesn't matter who mame is she's just a scapegoat which gives him the idea to make Maroni the scapegoat.
I was very impressed with this first episode! I think it might have been the best episode of a show I've seen all year! The great shots of the destruction of Gotham to the wacky mind behind Oz through his bonkers mom great episode!
I would love a whole bunch of different shows with Batman characters set in this version of Gotham. Reeves really nailed the vibe, tone, aesthetic, etc.
Are we seeing the origin story for Victor Zsasz without realizing it? I wasn't sure until he started talking about beheading the corpse. That seemed intentional.
@heavyspoilers you can tell its a new car because it has a temporary paper license plate now opposed to the metal one attached to the Maserati in The Batman
Victor has to be a young Zsasz, right? I mean, of all the names they could use they chose Victor. Maybe by the finale he’ll have his “one bad day” causing his decent into madness
The flood waters are still all over Gotham's lower levels and Matt Reeves said that he wants The Batman 2 to take place during winter, essentially revealing that Mister Freeze will be the main antagonist in The Batman 2. Should this happen, Mister Freeze will be in his element as he could threaten to freeze the entire city if he doesn't get whatever he needs to help cure Nora.
Very surprised by how much I enjoyed the first episode. Very Sopranos/Goodfellas-type vibe. Colin Farrell kicked ass big time! My theory is that the new drugs are either Venom/Bane, or Fear Toxin/Scarecrow inspired.
MY DAWG PAUL!!! He’s always on it!!! I was literally watching the episode thinking about the Heavy Spoilers breakdown incoming! And you never disappoint!
Great episode with Farrell (Quality acting carrying on from The Batman) & Milioti's (Menacing demeanour as Sofia)! I liked how Oz saw that the Kid had a stutter & we'll see how His character develops over the coming episodes. Another Great informal breakdown HS Cheers 🍻
In two consecutive nights we get the premiere of a spin-off tv series based on villains, who like the color purple, teams up with a teenager, hunted down by a woman with black hair, and oh yes they both have a scene being nude.
One of the things that makes Batman great is that it doesn't need Batman. I realized that when watching the amazing TAS episode "The Man who killed Batman."
I'm blown away at how phenomenal the 1st episode of The Penguin is. Farrell deserves any and every award possible for this performance... and that's just from the pilot episode.
The car fight scene was pretty much an exact copy of when he gets attacked in the streets. But yea his portrayal seem's to mirror alot of tony wich is a classic itallian mobster type i suppose at this point.
The kid handing the flyer is a reference to Black Mask and his False Faces gang. and I think one of the people chatting on the site might be Clock King.
Great breakdown really enjoyed this episode cant wait for the next Sunday, last time i was on the channel Paul didn't show himself its nice to put a face to the video!
We are feasting for the next 8-10 weeks, first off with penguin than FROM next week's season 3 premier... On a side note 4:32 what a great backdrop printworks nightclub has been for this series..
Every time i click one of these video's, I go into it like: There's no way, no freaking way I missed anything in this video/show! Boy oh boy, I couldn't possibly be more wrong, every, single, time!... 😂🤣 Love the old school outtakes mate, keep those coming!
Hell of a job mate!!! Can’t really describe the feeling, just come from watching something that gets you on a personal high and then watching your breakdown and then getting even higher! Especially after your sopranos breakdowns, I was really looking forward to the show. Knowing that you were gonna break this down. Your knowledge of the comics plus your fandom of Batman really adds to my experienceof this show (by watching this breakdown). Anyways, hell of A job Looking forward to next weeks breakdown By the way, HBO was doing such a good job I really hope marvel’s paying attention over there at Disney+, Because it looks like they’re gonna do a great job with that dune series that’s coming up next too
Glad they still kept the look and atmosphere of Gotham from the Batman movie. I was worried this would look like it wouldn’t fit in the same universe as the movie but it fits in just fine. Also love the actress playing Sofia. Overall great episode. 👌👍
Oz has no problem telling his mom because shes his mom. she's the only one who he can be totally honest with because she's the one who shaped him. she knows exactly what he is like. its just impossible to lie to her and the idea of disrespecting her by lying is practically unthinkable
I am thoroughly impressed with the penguin ...one of those shows where the time passes quick because its enjoyed so much ...cheers for the upload ..looking forward to the rest of the series and breakdowns
Great breakdown and dont sweat the pronunciation, americans continually butcher Italian word pronunciation..when italians hear fal-coan, provo-loan, proshoot, genoveeze we all cringe a little. You handled it right by showcasing both :D
Putting Mighty Mick's Gym in at the end as the party store they get the slushies at the end was fantastic, never seen Mr Sparkles vertion of Batman but couldn't wait for this show , big fan of Mr Cobblepot
I theorize that the new shipment that's supposed to change the drug industry might have more to do with the scarecrow that will amplify the drops' effects.
One of my favorite parts about it is that it feels like it’s from the same universe as the Batman. Similar cinematography/ pace look that makes it feel part of it if.
One scene I noticed that felt like a Deja Vu in the episode was the dinner scene with Os and Sofia which resembles a similar scene from the TV show Gotham S4 where Os and Sofia had their meeting.
Reeves absolutely kills it here !! the guy really knows what we want! Ferrel is amazing. His recent show on apple, sugar, was really good. Agatha is pretty damn good though. This is gonna be a cool stretch. The 3rd season of show From coming out Sunday. Gotta check it out if you haven’t yet
Absolutely great show, and I think Colin Farrell has done a marvelous job and it may be his best work. If they don't get an Emmy for this show in multiple categories, I would be shocked. Cheers Mate, ( in my most UK-ish accent so you could understand ) lol. Love 90 percent of your work...

25:51 hey I thought that they went out for LUNCH🙂
From season 3 episode 1 ???
😢😢😢😊😊😢 I’ll pop
Loving the grounded vibe. Farrell is unrecognizable as the Penguin. He’s awesome.
The shot of the camera panning down at the beginning of the episode really set the mood!
I don't know the actresses name, but man, she was amazing as well. Some of the best acting I have seen in a long time.
😊u 5:59
@@alb0zfinest yeah she was amazing.
@@alb0zfinestshe just looks like a ticking time bomb that’ll go off any moment.
Glad they committed to the R rating. Enjoyed the first episode, looking forward to seeing the rest of the season.
Vic came through on the end for the Penguin big time.
Somehow I feel vic is going to get betrayed in the end.
I don’t really think Penguin will need to betray him. But I’m worried he gets killed getting wrapped up in his schemes.
@@TheOutlawed1000 so long as it’s done right and not rushed or done wrong in my opinion I don’t mind how he dies
So it was just make Sophia believe that it was the Marrones that killed Alberto?
@@TP_TheOneWhoDreamsof course he will. He’s dealing with The Penguin, that’s how he is.
This was an enjoyable 1st episode. Now to see what I missed
It was great! Excited to see what’s to come and how it might tie into Batman 2026
Same
Victor also paralleled Jason Todd by being introduced stealing the rims off of Penguins car.
Like how Jason was caught ripping off the Batmobile.
🔥
I noticed this too 😅
@@angelpsyche-toy5295 he is Zsasz, isn't he?
@@22especI’ll much rather for him to be Mr freeze
Yep - I am so glad you mentioned this because this would be a great intro for Robin
When the penguin and Vic are going between trains, he looks at two open handicapped seats but refuses to sit in them even though he could. He refuses to let his foot cripple him.
I love that DC swung back. Batmanverse is better than anything since endgame so far.
This will be the Andor of the DC Universe. Understated, but potentially amazing and talked about for years to come. Thank GAWD there are still SOME intelligent writers in Hollywood
They went absolutely CRAZY with this first episode! I was hooked from the beginning and can’t wait for the rest!
This gave me strong Sopranos vibes - but thrown into Batmans world. I'm really digging it.
I was craving a breakdown after I just finished the episode. You came in clutch!
I second this
Been hyped for this, Colin Farrell was so good and almost unrecognizable in _The Batman_ 🔥
Almost?... he is unrecognizable
Was Oz a varsity athlete?
The song says Put the Blame on Mame. Oz says it doesn't matter who mame is she's just a scapegoat which gives him the idea to make Maroni the scapegoat.
Farrell is definitely up for an Emmy with that performance.
I was very impressed with this first episode! I think it might have been the best episode of a show I've seen all year! The great shots of the destruction of Gotham to the wacky mind behind Oz through his bonkers mom great episode!
The place where they get the slush puppies at the end is Mighty Micks Gym from Rocky. Mickey was played by Burgess Meredith. The OG Penguin.
when vic smirks at"walking not too fast" was a meta joke at how Oz waddles while he walks lmao
I would love a whole bunch of different shows with Batman characters set in this version of Gotham. Reeves really nailed the vibe, tone, aesthetic, etc.
A huge takeaway for me is how most of the criminal activity occurs during the daylight hours, as to not have the attention of the Bat. Awesome start!
Are we seeing the origin story for Victor Zsasz without realizing it?
I wasn't sure until he started talking about beheading the corpse. That seemed intentional.
U know what, I didn't even see it like that but it makes sense now🤷🏿♂️
That’s a helluva pull and reference man. We very well could be ? 🧐
The version of Penguin is so damn good
This show is gonna win SO many awards.
@heavyspoilers you can tell its a new car because it has a temporary paper license plate now opposed to the metal one attached to the Maserati in The Batman
His maserati is actually a different model. In The Batman he had a 6th-gen Quattroporte, in the show it's a 3rd-gen Ghibli.
I love how much he riced out his car too. A purple wrap with copper wheels is the ghettoest thing I have ever seen
Coulda sworn he had a temp tag on this new one
@@Sebastianrdz41 Wow you're right, good catch!
It actually makes sense I mean wasnt his car in the movie totalled after the chase scene?
@@krypticunlimited6925 Yep, I assumed that's why they changed to a different model, even though it also has the same paint scheme.
Victor has to be a young Zsasz, right? I mean, of all the names they could use they chose Victor. Maybe by the finale he’ll have his “one bad day” causing his decent into madness
And become Penguin's enforcer?
When you caught that light from falling and said “For fuck’s sake!” I laughed harder than anything else in the video.
The quick time prompt was a nice touch haha
@@MoeBalingerIllustration Lol yeah, I noticed it the first time it happen had to go back like, did a triangle pop over his head 😹😹 good editing..
Time stamp pls
Notice how the G in the Penguin logo looks like a penguin beak. Excellent attention to details 👌

This episode is the Paul of a classic series premiere. And by Paul I mean aka Definition.
I understood that reference

This all works better as a show than a movie
It was a pretty solid first episode imo, consider me hooked. Can't wait to see how this plays out!
HBO loves showing characters' feet, don't they. Keep up the fantastic work.
The Club foot reference?! HBO does love to feature them!
Quentin Tarantino secretly writing these shows 😅
I liked this video before it was made. Always got your back mate.
15:25 that was creative 😂😂
DC studios won tv for me this week
Clancy, Shawshank, Penguin, Rita Hayworth, Rita Haworth poster, its all connected lol. ;)
Incredible episode!
Nice QTEs, Paul. Perfectly executed to catch that light.

The Penguin beat that witch Agatha with his cripple feet. And Agatha knew it All Along. It's really amazing Soprano-Godfather series.
Just watched episode 1 and loved it. The writing, the grit, man almost 10/10 debut for me
The song that Rita Hayword is singing is "Put the Blame on Mame" Mame being a fictional woman that is being used as a scapegoat.
The way they frame Oz, and his little mannerisms remind me of a shark always in hunting mode.
I was hooked right from the first scene. Already loving The Penguin, and I just finished the first official podcast episode on Prime.
The PlayStation action button was a nice touch 😂
Really good start. I really enjoyed the 1st episode.
And thanks for the recap, I had forgotten a few details.
I love it! Farrell is incredible as the Penguin. Excellent production! Can't wait to see more.
The first episode reminded me so much of The Sopranos. It gives off the same vibes as the Sopranos.
The car fight scene was pretty much an exact copy of when he gets attacked in the streets. But yea his portrayal seem's to mirror alot of tony wich is a classic itallian mobster type i suppose at this point.
Best review I seen on this show it’s gonna be a huge show as it continues
To me this show makes me want that world heavily explored.
The kid handing the flyer is a reference to Black Mask and his False Faces gang. and I think one of the people chatting on the site might be Clock King.
I loved it didnt think i was gonna like it as much i love that it really picks up where the movie left off and i got hooked from the start
This is a great example of how a show can help expand a movie universe and tie perfectly with the next movie.

I like that Oz had the same air freshener in his Volvo as he had in the Maseratti.
Lol of all lines/clips from Shawshank. I love you bro thank you for the bangers.
"Smashing the safe like the like button" is a fantastic line.
Hell of a show so far.

“I’ve been keeping an eye on women’s necks…for research purposes.” Dracula has entered the chat.
Cant believe anyone gave this a bad review, amazing character study on the penguin watching ferrel in this role is truly captivating

Colin Farrell is always brilliant in any role. In Bruges will always be my favorite movie of his.
My theory is that Oz is Rex Calabrese’s illegitimate son who admired him from afar. In a sorta mirror to Selina and Carmine.
Great catch! That was close
I think Arkham is the source of the new drug.
