Welcome to the Heavy Spoilers show, I'm your host Paul and this video we're breaking down The Boys.

The brand new episode is now here and we're already half way through Season 4. Things are heating up and as always this recaps gonna go over everything you need to know. This includes all the comic call backs, marvel and dc easter eggs and everything that we think is gonna happen. So strap yourselves in and get ready cos the boys are back in town.
Now the opening sort of riffs off the homeboy character design we got for Ryan last week. Here though we see Homelanders costumes dated in 1987. There's lots of clear allusions to other costumes with the yellow one being akin to the Sentry. Theres also red like something ripped out of Red Son. We then see the switch to the blue before finally getting red and blue one. Still though whats missing is the cape which would end up being the star and stripes. This was adopted by Homelander so Americans would relate to him more. Its something that they also did when creating Superman. His catchphrase was of course Truth, Justice and the American Way which debuted in 1942. This was used as a way to help rally the troops with comics being used as a way to get citizens to sign up. Captain America was of course heavily based around that and its with this I really started to get Homelanders design. Though he's of course a Superman Parody he's also heavily based on Captain America. Even his dad was Soldier Boy who was the ultimate parody and its the cape that would go on to really make the man.

Quick correction - it was Hughie’s mum who gave the V and thems aren’t homelander pubes. I used RUclips editor to try remove them bits but it just caused copyright issues. Tried doing 6 more uploads but all those had issues so I’ve taken the L and admitted I’m an idiot. Apologies for the mistakes and thanks for the corrections.

I bought the 4.0 and the "skin safe technology" nicked me three times within 5 minutes, badly....the reason I bought it was because all sorts of youtube ads...not worth the 80 I spent, went back to my 20 dollar remington that has never cut me once. Manscaped isn't worth the cost.

It was pretty obvious Daphne is the one that shoots Hugh with V. Hughie stopped himself and put it back in his pocket, then Daphne looks at the IV as if she's planning something
Edit: she said she works for vaught in episode 2, for anyone wandering how she got the V. She's also real, the Dr. In charge of Hugh interacts with her, doubt she's a hallucination.
Exactly idk how anyone can miss that Hughie pocketed the vial before using it
Also her staring with anticipation and focusing in on the tubes waiting for the V to flow. She was calm while Hughie literally was shitting himself on what was going on.

The fact that she knew about the compound V proves she’s a hallucination because how would she know about the compound V at all if she wasn’t in Hughies imagination

It wasn't a fire extinguisher that butcher used it was liquid nitrogen, they show it in an earlier scene when they try to blackmail Firecracker.
yeah, when they did an explicit shot at the label on the extinguisher I knew it would come to fruition later in the episode, not subtle at all 🤣

Barbara's actor (Nancy Lenehan) did SUCH a good job.
Such an incredibly warm voice with absolutely no empathy in the words.
The thing that stood out the most to me about Barbara is that she showed no fear of Homelander.
Imagine being barba, trapped in a room to die. Blood and gore painting the wall… while you slowly die of thirst…
I'm sure they tried it on John at first. now Barbara has to go through it. what a horrible situation.
I mean, Vought will send people for her. They aren't going to leave an entire lab of equipment there, with a higher-up researcher. Barbara is just going to be trapped in silence with decomposing bodies strewn across the floors, walls, and ceiling.
Wouldn't be surprised if she got some horrible trauma from it.

The fact that Antony Starr hasn't won an Emmy for his role as Homelander yet is really unfair. Also, really liked Hughie and Kimiko's dynamic in this episode, wish to more scenes of them together.

MatPat is explained this perfectly on Film Theory. Award committees are conditioned to like what they like. That’s why we constantly only see realistic dramas and period pieces are the only projects that get any air.

I think it's Ryan watching him and he saved him. Look at the way the scene of HL killing the Drs looks like the scene with Butcher

it could and probably is just the permanent v butcher said he took had late effects. we saw in season 3 that’s butcher has the same laser eye powers as homelander and ryan.

I imagine Ryan is watching Butcher from a distance like Homelander can and was watching Butcher. And I bet homie can be plenty brutal and that Supe wouldn't have just gone down easy. When it came to the ending with Hughie's dad, it seemed to me like Hughie actually didn't give his Dad the V. He looks at it, then puts it back away. He's also incredibly surprised to see his Dad wake up, he doesn't know what's happening. Part of me wonder's if his Mom might've done it instead.
My theory is butcher taking the V cured him but that parasite is what’s making him feel like he’s still dying

I think it's more like a Jekyl and Hyde thing or since everything in the Boys has its Marvel/DC equivalent... Butcher just went Hulk on him. They were activated by a sense of self preservation as he passed out dying. He already said he took more V but didn't get powers this time. Well he did and he just doesn't know how to use them yet. It's almost too obvious.
The “fire extinguisher” is labelled as liquid nitrogen, visible when Butcher drops it after knocking the guard out.
The white hairs in the jar are Homelander’s, as seen in previous episodes. Stormfronts photo has nothing to do with the hair, it’s there for the same reason Stillwell’s milk bottle is present. These are souvenirs of people he loved.

My god firecracker made me so angry this episode! Hats off to the actress. And homelander... oh my god. Also loved the choreography of Hughie's fight scene i thought it was really well done. Best episode of the season so far.
Things in Homelander's apartment drawer: His own grey hair (pubic), Black Noir's sword (not Maeve's), Stormfront's picture and Madelyn's milk bottle. All these items represent the people Homelander used to love the most and now has lost them.
I don't know why paul said it was Maeve's sword (it is pretty clear as Noir had a ninja themed black sword whereas Maeve had a wonder woman like sword)
Cuz him and Ryan from Screencrush are in such a rush to put out videos so they can be “first with the reviews” that their content quality is starting to suffer…

The hair in the jar is Homelander gray hairs. He’s been plucking them and putting them in the jar each episode.
If you notice at the beginning of the episode Butcher and MM knock out a security guard with the fire extinguisher. When butcher puts it down it says LIQUID NITROGEN on the side. So you’re right a regular fire extinguisher couldn’t do it but they effectively set up that this one was different from the beginning of the episode.

Antony Performance in this is terrifying good character building isn't talked about enough season to season he never gets dull or overused this season has been really solid
The line about how "he could have left anytime he wanted" but was conditioned not to. Reminds me of elephants used for the circus or labor. They shackle the baby elephant so it can't escape at all times even though it's not a threat, but it's so that once it's full grown, it can easily overpower the shackles and post but they still mentally believe they can't break free😢

I think this was one of the best episodes of the show so far and can definitely shut the mouths of season 4 haters

The guy showing up with the gun at the starlighter's hq looking for the children in the basement is a parody of an event that happened in the real world, where a guy showed up to a pizza shop in DC with a gun looking for the children in the pizza shop's basement. In both instances, the gunman believed all of the conspiracy theories about the leaders of their opposition being secret pedophiles trafficking children in their hq's basements. The pizza shop in real life didn't even have a basement, which is also how the starlighter's respond
Hughie didnt give his father the Compound V
The liquid nitrogen fire extinguisher was set up earlier in the episode. It's the same one used to knock out the guards. They make sure to cut to a shot of it saying 'liquid nitrogen' on the side.
Theres was an animation in the spinoff series called John and Sun-Hee where a cancer patient had taken the V and it ended up causing the cancer to mutate and i think the same thing is going on with butcher
Exactly. People do not wanna consider the animated spin of as canon for some reason or refuse to even watch it. But that episode clearly foreshadow what is gonna happen to butcher and maybe hughies father

Theory:
Hugh gave his da compound V.
1. He mom is not real and is a or part of him. In this episode the nurse is talking to Hugh instead of his mom who has POA and should be making the decisions and the nurse never acknowledge her.
2. The fact the Butcher is also seeing Beca is more evidence as the both took temp V and would have similar side effects.
3. This season seems to be about the character dealing with internal personality issues with our main 3 Homelander, Butcher, and Hugh having theirs visualized.
That 616 being the sign of the devil just tripped me out. It just adds more context to Kendrick Lamar’s 616 in LA.🤯 Kdot reads the Bible.

the fire extinguisher said "liquid nitrogen" on it, hence the freezing, just a different dispenser, used in movie settings, works since the show pretended to have a stage for firecracker that item would be around

A quick metoclopramide hoogle search says that it can be used to increase milk production, which may make Firecracker the source of the breast milk in Homelander's room.
You forgot that Butcher took permanent V he found in Frenchy desk.. also Hughie took his jacket off right before leaving the room and his mom was the one who used the V on his dad.
I thought Hughies mother stole the V off him when she went to sit behind him before he went to get a drink, which is probably when she also rigged the stolen V in his IV.

I think mind-Becca is going to turn out to be the personification of Butcher’s tumour which has become sentient and super-powered due to the compound-v he took. When Butcher’s life was under threat the tumour came in to action as it has a symbiotic relationship and needs it’s host to stay alive.
This episode brought all the show's qualities back! Amazing from beggining till the end

I think you missed the Diabolical episode where the woman with cancer got Compound V and it became a sentient being. That's the thing running around inside Butcher which protected him from death.

I wonder if they are related to Victoria Newman's daughter. He is a government operative, that's why he wants to have Ryan, as insurance against Homelander. He is working for the same guys the boys are, just that the G men use his connection with Butcher to have a 2nd plan in case the boys don't succeed

You could tell the entire time negan was a hallucination. I'm not sure why they made it seem like an oh shit moment. Nobody ever reacted to any lines he said and he popped up after it has been made clear that butcher has a tumor giving him hallucinations.
Now almost every single action Homelander has done before is somewhat understandable. Not at all justifiable, but from the moment he was born, he was treated like an object and abused to a point which exceeds my cogniton…
How Homelander was born, they did give a Throwback to the comics as Barbara narrated it.

They set up the fire extinguisher scene earlier, when Butcher hits the guard in the face. If you look at the fire extinguisher he used, it says liquid nitrogen on it. I thought it was weird at the time, but it was defintely paid off by the arm freezing scene.

I expect that the worm moving in bucher is the cancer tumour which has mutated even more withh the compound V rather than butcher getting the powers

I once again feel like I’m watching a different show from everyone else. I saw exactly two redeeming moments in that episode, personally: Jack Quaid’s performance in that fight scene was above and beyond the normal level of “excellent” that the actors on this show normally live at, and Starlight beating the mess out of Firecracker was very satisfying, even if it of course immediately led to absolutely the most melodramatic possible narrative choices. Big time GoT season 8 vibes for me so far this season. Bums me out, because this season has finally kind of clarified for me that this show was always kind of coasting on my enjoyment of them dunking on all the worst people on the planet. That, and the acting, which is of course very good. Please just give Antony Starr an Emmy, he’s more than earned it at this point, and maybe they’ll never make us sit through idiocy like this again if he finally wins the Emmy he should’ve already received.
Sage is literally the only good thing so far this season for me, personally, but this ep was pretty light on her (and most of what we got from her centered around stuff I already figured she was doing after last week) so this ep was a straight up dumpster fire for the most part, as far as I’m concerned. The “edgy shock value” and the great acting (no lie, the acting is always on point) and the social commentary just don’t hit after 3.5 seasons of the show coasting on that. For me, at least.

Because the plot points, feel a bit forced. Like Frenchie didn't have any love connection before this season at all, like no woman or man and now suddenly there's partner, there's a history and he's struggling, why this whole route ? MM feels like he's lacking direction in this season, he's just there.
Jeffrey Dean Morgan is there, that's it. Nothing has happened. Hughie feels very good this season. Annie is cool. Her new revelation of being a bully child feels good, knowing that you may come forward and change your approach in life but your past doesn't leave you behind without any repercussions.
Now for the story part
From s3 to s4 (Already half crossed)
1. Nothing has happened with the virus that can kill supes.
2. Deep is still dumb, a train is still feeling bad, homelander still doing nothing new story wise(great acting but what's changed since last 3 seasons), butcher is still well butchering i guess.
The core thing that's affecting me is that there's literally no growth in the story since new season half already completed.

Since I haven't seen anyone else mention it, your idea that the legislation of supes on the show being an analog to our gun control debate here in America is spot-on. Homelander, A-Train, The Deep, and many of the other supes are effectively unregulated, dangerous, organic weapons. I'm not sure if Firecracker will turn out to be dangerous, at least as far as her powers go; so far we've only seen her create sparks, and she doesn't seem particularly durable or strong. Ryan may be the most dangerous weapon of them all.

His mom administered the V. She figured out what was happening, took it from his pocket (presumably) and administered it while Huey was getting coffee. Huey handed off the coffee and sat down and it immediately cut to the V entering his dad's body.
I wonder how Homelander managed to get out of the Red Room since the door was not only welded from the outside, but also on the inside?

Homelander had revenge vendetta straight after he took over Vaught is abuse of power. He also killed everyone in the room to remove a witness, left only Rebecca that probably either died or just go insane if she survives.

Hughie didn’t give his dad the V. It was probably his mother. Or a doctor. Hughie pocketed the V and left the room only to return and it was in his drip.
This was also the first time I rooted for Ghoullight all season - no matter your opinion on the subject, having your personal medical records broadcast nationwide live like that deserves a beating to be thrown.
