My friend actually posed the question if uncle was really useful to the game yesterday and I explained that he definitely did give decent tips from time to time.
Uncle was one of the few characters who wasn't afraid to call out Dutch for who he was, it's in one of the campfire interactions early on in the game where Uncle calls Dutch a wannabe king amongst the gang. Dutch plays it off as a joke on the surface, but the look in his eyes showed he was angered by what Uncle said and wanted to kill him.
Dutch even "jokingly" said he wanted to kill him during that when he was walking away then Uncle said that so he turned around and when he got back to the Log next to Uncle he said it. It was a fairly tense interaction to listen in on.
I dont understand why people unironically hate on uncle so much he is old and has lived his life already, so of course he has less of a care. He is definitely smarter than he lets on too. I feel like the "one shot kid" title was genuine at some point
Just bc he’s old and lived his life doesn’t mean he needs to leech off everyone else especially when he isn’t wanted, but nobody has the heart to actually push him away. Think about it, the gang where everyone gets what they earn and Uncle is sitting by the camp fire all day eating or drinking supplies that others donated or food that Pearson makes, etc. and he puts noticeably less effort than most yet he gets all the same benefits. It’s not fair but bc people like Uncle like he’s family they’re willing to tolerate that and fans often overlook that. Then in the epilogue he basically tells John “Nice place u got here now ur stuck with me”

Fun fact: Lumbago is a real health problem. It's a persistent pain in the lower back. It's an outdated term, but my dad has something that'd be classified as lumbago in that time and it genuinely can be disabling. That said, it is just a term for backpain.
Even though it “isn’t canon”. I like to think Uncle was one of the most legendary gunslingers of the west, Red Harlow. But lumbago took a toll on him and made him old and weak, but he’s still extremely loyal to the ones he loves. Always thought it was cooler that he was a legendary gunfighter that, although old and lazy now, we never know the true power of because we can’t really do anything. But regardless Uncle always has a special place in our hearts, our favorite, drunk, old bastard who we all love. ❤️

Pretty much everyone who wants the theory to be true only want to it to be true cause its cool to think that Uncle was once a badass gunslinger and Red Harlow is the closest excuse they have for it. And don't get me wrong I think the idea of Uncle once being someone who was badass is interesting, but not Red Harlow. It'd be the biggest character assassinations ever if Red Harlow turned into Uncle, not to mention the theory has paper thin proof and is easily disproved
@demonslayer5122 the whole timeline doesn't match up When Red Harlow is in his early 20s in Red Dead Revolver, its roughly in the early 1800s Red Harlow was 12-13 when his parents died meaning Red Dead revolver takes place only around 8-9 years after his parents murder. The timelines doesn't match up, they look nothing alike, sound nothing alike, act nothing alike, have completely different mindsets and the "evidence" is either paper thin or complete reaching.
I kind of see Uncle as the old man in almost every workplace that is replaceable on paper, but can't afford to retire, and probably cant find employment elsewhere. Management doesn't get rid of them because they are as personable and useful as they need to be.
When jack got taken i felt genuine fear and when we walked ip to the braithweighta mansion i felt genuine anger and hatred. Same goes for when uncle was taken. I was almost brought to tears at the thought he could be getting tortured. I dont think any game characters have ever brought that level of emotion out of me. Its the fact that i have known these characters since i was 11 years old when the first game came out and actually have grown to care about them. Words can't express how brilliantly these characters are written..
When uncle was taken I was spamming deadeye and literally installed the all shots cause bleedouts mods just so when I shot the skinners on the balls they wouldn't die as easily
With you on this! Jack mattered so much to me. The only thing that came close was in a Call of Duty Campaign, idk which one so that tells you something, but Russian soldiers were dropping into suburban USA and I actually got mad lol, back when COD mattered I guess. Foreign troops paradropping into my home country upset me, but not as much as wanting that kid to be OK 🤣
Agreed. If it wasn't for Uncle's banter, John would've been his neck deep in debt to hang around in misery in an old shack on some infertile rocky dry land, waiting for Abigail to return to him. He was lazy, but was very good in challenging others to work for him, and knew a thing or two about how to do things.
I in real life have Lumbago, it often does effect my ability to do work though not the the severity it does with uncle but when my back starts fairing up it becomes very difficult to lift or move anything
Is that in lower part of the back? If i stand just slightly bent, my spine there gets very very stiff and it is very hard to straighten up. Also it hurts pretty badly.
Uncle may not have been Red himself, but he may have been quite sleek and dangerous in his teens/twenties/thirties (but mellowed out and got semi-infirm).
I don't even fault Uncle for his laziness. Even John gets belittled for his age in the epilogue, with people thinking he won't be much of a help with physical labor due to his age, even though he doesn't even seem that old. These were very harsh times and people were at horrible health. As a gang member, when you get too old for that kind of demanding work, you're at the mercy of your fellow gang members, who don't want to feed you forever if you don't pull your weight. That's not an enviable position. That's something that could have easily happened to John, Arthur or any other gang member, if they turned that old.
Beaches Hope, not Pronghorn. The emotion surrounding uncles death plays in the foreshadowing of Uncle sleeping on the porch at Beechers Hope in RDR2 in exactly the same spot and position he died in RDR1.
in that same position in beechers hope, uncle says “you’ll have to bury me here” which is, like you said, where he died, which is some very good foreshadowing by rockstar
Uncle gets a lot of trash talk from people for many reasons but remember, if it wasn't for uncle, the ranch wouldn't have been built, and it was uncle who also defended his family from the soldiers.
He the family member who’s lazy and doesn’t do much but always happy to see again because of the stories and knowledge they have also generally entertaining
At 9:25 you say "uncle returns to pronghorn ranch with john" but John's ranch is named Beechers Hope! The Pronghorn Ranch was the ranch where the marstons worked for David Geddes!
I always antagonize Uncle as Arthur and John, but the character is so written he doesn't take it seriously. And besides, if, as John, you give him the ingredients to cure his crabs infestation, Uncle gives John a full set of gear.
I love uncle. Sure he’s lazy (not his fault bro got lumbago) but he’s loyal & died protecting John’s family & technically he’s the reason why John even has a home
He may just be the most honest character. Minus lumbago of course, he’s always telling people the cold truth. He makes John wisen up real quick with his legendary roasting session.
I always respected Uncle-in both games-for his loyalty, he knew who his family was and was always willing to do something, and protect them in his own way. He led a very interesting life. I look forward to your video on Dutch and his relationship with the natives.
Uncle was kinda looped in with other “useless” characters like Molly and the reverend (even tho I like reverend), but he helped out on jobs sometimes and defended John’s family like all in all he was a real one
11:51 I first played RDR2, and all I can say is that with how tight the writing and performances are in it... there's just smth off abt some of the moments in RDR1. Like the delivery on Uncle: Don't worry abt me, just git 'em out of here *dies* Jack: OMG THEY KILLED HIM!! feels almost like like its a play, or a B Movie
Rdr1 was a masterpiece. Don’t really think there’s anything weird about that scene with uncle dying, maybe a little over dramatic but whose to say. Seems like something a teenage boy would yell in horror watching a loved one die in his arms most of us probably can’t relate
@@BasedR0nin It was more-so the delivery of uncle's line that made me think that, and also John just yelling lol. Never said once that RDR1 wasn't a masterpiece. It is in its own right, I just find that the emotional parts in RDR2 are perfect (for the most part) while in RDR1 there's times where the delivery feels just a bit off tbh. Some of it I think comes from Uncle's VA in RDR1 (Spider/Robert Madison), he sounds a lot younger then his looks would have you believe. James Anthony McBride as the voice of Uncle in RDR2 was a good pick, felt more natural.
Uncle being in both games without letting us know much about his past, I only see two valid stories for RDR3, Uncle's past till he joined the gang or Jack's future, which would allow Charles, Sadie or Tillie or anyone else who survuved to be back in the series..
I meant it in a positive way, you are really good at what you are doing no doubt in that,I've been dodging my sleep paralysis demon ever since I started watching you
7:44 I had played RDR2 first and I didn't know about Uncle being in RDR1, so I was really worried about him when Charles said that line. I really didn't want that funny old man to go.
John doesn’t take any shit from Uncle in RDR1 because he left him Beecher’s hope to take care of while he was hunting down the rest of the gang and he left it in ruins.
Great video as always, only critique is you called beachers hope pronghorn ranch a few times in the video. Love your analysis and love the content. Keep it up!
You think uncle regretted bringing Molly back only for her to get shot? I know he never mentions it but… after learning she never actually gave up the gang….
What I don’t understand why some want uncle to Be Red Harlow, not just the ages and timeline don’t add up for that but as much as I actually love uncle I must say if uncle is red that would be the most let down of a character I’ve seen imo, red is like this mythical man of the west, a legendary badass gunslinger all for him to turn into uncle would lowkey be disappointing tbh
What’s funny in the cutscene that uncle dies… that’s a real time cutscene. On my very first play through when he got shot he was slowly coming down and that’s when his head just gets blown off. Traumatized me to this day
I noted in the game that Arthur was more kinder to Uncle as opposed to John. But then Arthur was more of a lighthearted individual, where John would seemingly have to have be threatened with having hot irons put to his feet to get him to seemingly crack a smile. That said, Uncle would actually be an interesting protagonist for RDR3, to explore his background and see what made Uncle into the man he was in RDR1 and RDR2. Hes old enough to have been a veteran of the Civil War, seeing he's probably somewhere in his 50s at the time of RDR2, perhaps older, so that if that's incorporated into his backstory, it could make for an interesting storyline.
Just started replaying RDR2 for about a month now and oh good memories. I remember when the game came out one of googles most looked up questions at the time was was that “sickness” uncle had since it did sound like BS to be as lazy as he was
As someone who jumped into RD2 kinda blind, I like the Uncle/Red Harlow theory but i understand that its not possible. HOW I view it, Red dead Revolver is you playing the legend. When in reality Uncle is like Jim Boy Calloway. A legend who will never live up to the stories. Also, if Uncle was a legendary gungslinger, the last thing he would want is either being killed so that someone else can take his title. or family members of his victims coming after him. Also, I just really like Uncle. Yeah, he runs away from camp like Pearson but it makes sense. The man lived a long life where men usually died young. He saw through Mica's b.S and left early. I chose to believe uncle left because he knew shit was going to go down and that hed be a burden to escort out of the gang wars
Uncle isn't even lazy. He is one of the most beneficial members of the crew specifically because he's there for anyone and everyone. He said he wouldn't leave that porch until everyone was safe. He kept his word. He never left that porch.
Bill Gates once said that he would rather hire a lazy person than a hard worker because they would find a smarter way to do things... Uncle is that person.
It's worth noting that Uncle's mission with the cattle gains you access to the Carcano Rifle 2 chapters early so it's very much worth doing his mission. With the exploit to de-scope the sniper rifles, the Carcano ends up being the best bolt action.
In the mission where you go robbing with uncle, bill and charles. When you are at the wagon, Uncle loses his beard and he looks like Red Harlow there for a moment. It's a cool easter egg.
Charles is a reference to Red Harlow, He burned his hand in the first mission, and he is half native both parents killed. I would argue to be the most logical
Uncles use to the gang is just that, hes an uncle. He comes off as a light hearted, doggish old drunk (because he is). that allows him to keep his ear to the ground for the rest of the gang so to speak. He's the guy they can send into town and nobody is gonna question if he's an outlaw or not and are more likely to forget he ever existed.
Guys, I was thinking, and I think Dutch was a little misunderstood in chapter 6, look: Arthur condemned Dutch's idea of using the Indians as a distraction, but the gang was almost being captured and they needed to do everything to survive ( think, if a person steals food to survive, is he wrong?). At that moment the gang was unable to help anyone, at that moment they needed to help themselves, otherwise they would die, so Dutch wasn't so wrong in using the Indians, as survival was what mattered most at that moment. Also, in chapter 6, Dutch's plan was finally working, they had pulled off their last heist and were fleeing to New York to get on a boat and go to Tahiti, but everything went wrong when Arthur discovered that Micah was the traitor. I know that some of Dutch's actions are completely wrong, like when he lets Arthur and John die, but even so, Dutch acted much more intelligently in chapter 6 than in the rest of the game (apart from him trusting Micah).
I agree this was the only way they could survive but the problem was Dutch placed himself as martyr for all those they could fight for. So to blatantly place his own survival and the gang's over those they supposedly serve or work for. Proves who Dutch really was
but then again, The Dutch Gang was built on pillar based on altruistic idea like helping the poor, shooting people who need shooting and so on. In Chapter 6, the gang completely on the edge of destruction, they can't do such things like helping the poor, but when the gang refuse to help the gang member itself, it's just drifted from the pillar which it relies on.
@@RelarinScenes i would do the same thing if i was inm his position he had no loyalty to the indians and no promises to them as he had towards the gang
"At that moment the gang was unable to help anyone, at that moment they needed to help themselves" I don't agree with this at all, they clearly had the money to at least escape to New York, so everything they were doing at Beaver Hollow was unnecessary. John Marston eventually makes it to Alaska, which was still truly the frontier back then, so needing the funds to get to Tahati was also unnecessary. The Wapiti made it north to Canada despite being at war with the US Army, no reason Dutch couldn't have made it too if he cared to try.
lazy and smart can be an effective combo at times, means they have the means to figure out how to do a hard job faster and more conveniently rather than using tough conventional means
my theory with uncle is that hes a distant relative of either hosea or dutch (though i imagine more likely to be hosea), close enough to be familar but distant enough to not be close. as mentioned in the video hes sort of always been down and out so its possible they crossed paths, recognized each other, and as uncle does he used that familiarity to talk his way into joining up with the gang (i can imagine him saying something about providing "valuable advice and information"). it would explain both why hes allowed to stick around providing very little without ever being expected to really pull his weight and his nickname, as uncle could be a general term of endearment because of his relationship to hosea
Im glad im not the only one who actually likes uncle. What the skinners did to him actually pissed me off. Who would've thought id care more about fictional characters than actual people lol
We often forget he helped people get away from the toxicity in chapter 6 he may be lazy but is important to the series also him being red make so much sense
What I like about the RDR2 missions is that they all fit the characters you commit them with a lot. But often overlooked are the way Uncle does his missions. Even though he often lazies about and wastes his times in Saloons, he often does get valuable information (probably from Saloon gossip) with high-paying jobs that are relatively safe and easy. Which really fits his character, unwilling to work hard and risk his neck for a low pay. John was right that Uncle was useful in his useless kinda way.
It took me until my second time playing RDR2 to realize the karma behind Uncle getting his back roasted on a fire for lying about his lumbago. Uncle; a drunk, a sloth, thief, murderer, and yes…as Arthur said; a compulsive liar. Yet a loved one, and a loyal fighter who cared about the people who let him live his broken life. Shine on you crazy old fool.

Words can't express how brilliantly these characters are written..
Exactly. The only other thing that has given me this type of emotion like this game are some movies and tv.
Yeah, I always get more emotional when the funny/innocent characters get harmed. Uncle, Sean and jack for example
Uncle was the unsung hero in the epilogue though.
Agreed. If it wasn't for Uncle's banter, John would've been his neck deep in debt to hang around in misery in an old shack on some infertile rocky dry land, waiting for Abigail to return to him. He was lazy, but was very good in challenging others to work for him, and knew a thing or two about how to do things.
@@BlondieRUclips without Uncle giving John a reality check. Abigail and Jack would have returned to the beechers hope as that outhouse shack lol.
when it really mattered he took a bullet for john
@@BlondieRUclipsI think that's why Dutch and Hosea kept him around despite his laziness because he could be unexpectedly helpful.
@@DarthZiZi yeah it's in your lower back it's specifically a chronic and severe lower back pain
As memed about as it is Uncle is definitely in chronic pain
must be a terminal condition, don't overdo it you might get a relapse
Praying for you. From how Uncle described it. The Dying process must be agonizing 🙏
But he is a logistic genius
He aged horribly. Look at Hosea, he's 55 and yet is pretty fit
I have lumbago and thank God for Uncle because now is my number one excuse for everything and my friends just laugh it off
do you still have it :(
Beaches Hope, not Pronghorn.
Uncle gets a lot of trash talk from people for many reasons but remember, if it wasn't for uncle, the ranch wouldn't have been built, and it was uncle who also defended his family from the soldiers.
exactly
Uncle is loyal even if nothing else😂
Lies. Charles and John built it.
@@johnaustin209 he kinda just watched mostly lol
@@RelarinScenes Kinda? He was doing what he always did: NOTHING.
He the family member who’s lazy and doesn’t do much but always happy to see again because of the stories and knowledge they have also generally entertaining
Uncle, he may have been lazy, but he was damn well Loyal.
How the hell are you still alive?"
Arthur Morgan, 1899.
At 9:25 you say "uncle returns to pronghorn ranch with john" but John's ranch is named Beechers Hope! The Pronghorn Ranch was the ranch where the marstons worked for David Geddes!
I was about to comment this 😂 real ones caught it right away
Arthur calling Uncle "The Camp Rat" in chapter 1 seems so sad in hindsight
Better than "The worst pimp in the history of the world" 😅
I always antagonize Uncle as Arthur and John, but the character is so written he doesn't take it seriously.
And a wife lol
I always respected Uncle-in both games-for his loyalty, he knew who his family was and was always willing to do something, and protect them in his own way. He led a very interesting life.
I look forward to your video on Dutch and his relationship with the natives.
Uncle was kinda looped in with other “useless” characters like Molly and the reverend (even tho I like reverend), but he helped out on jobs sometimes and defended John’s family like all in all he was a real one
11:51 I first played RDR2, and all I can say is that with how tight the writing and performances are in it... there's just smth off abt some of the moments in RDR1. Like the delivery on
Uncle: Don't worry abt me, just git 'em out of here *dies*
Jack: OMG THEY KILLED HIM!!
feels almost like like its a play, or a B Movie
That's what early cinematic video-game-writing was... 😉
@@kamukameh Makes sense. I always found RDR1 more satirical anyways, it fits the vibe well.
@@xwedeldef not supposed to be satirical lmao.
Uncle was akin to jack sparrow (in the first movie) playing the bumbling fool who was secretly alot smarter then he would appear
Uncle being in both games without letting us know much about his past, I only see two valid stories for RDR3, Uncle's past till he joined the gang or Jack's future, which would allow Charles, Sadie or Tillie or anyone else who survuved to be back in the series..
Uncle would be a fun protagonist especially if he was who some of the theories say he was
Lumbago is actually a real thing. But I believe it is now treatable, not so sure back then in the 19th and early 20th century.
I keep hearing you say "Pronghorn Ranch," when you mean "Beecher's Hope" 😅
Respect the one shot kid, one shot of whisky to start the day hehee
Uncle would make a great character to see his past as the one shot kid
your voice and content really helps me sleep thanks man
The dig 😭
I meant it in a positive way, you are really good at what you are doing no doubt in that,I've been dodging my sleep paralysis demon ever since I started watching you
@@CynicGTAI fall asleep to your videos as well
7:44 I had played RDR2 first and I didn't know about Uncle being in RDR1, so I was really worried about him when Charles said that line. I really didn't want that funny old man to go.
John doesn’t take any shit from Uncle in RDR1 because he left him Beecher’s hope to take care of while he was hunting down the rest of the gang and he left it in ruins.
"I'll give you a bad case of someone just shot me in the head if you don't hurry up!"
-John to Uncle (1911)
Great video as always, only critique is you called beachers hope pronghorn ranch a few times in the video. Love your analysis and love the content. Keep it up!
Uncle is just everyone's punching bag but he's a strangely smart punching bag😂top tier character
You think uncle regretted bringing Molly back only for her to get shot? I know he never mentions it but… after learning she never actually gave up the gang….
if he says lumbawgo again i’m gonna punch a hole in my monitor
What I don’t understand why some want uncle to Be Red Harlow, not just the ages and timeline don’t add up for that but as much as I actually love uncle I must say if uncle is red that would be the most let down of a character I’ve seen imo, red is like this mythical man of the west, a legendary badass gunslinger all for him to turn into uncle would lowkey be disappointing tbh
Uncle always sleeps in the place were he dies in rdr1 . It's like a foreshadowing
I was so happy to meet Uncle in Blackwater playing as John in RDR2!
2:03 you could also say John is fed up with him after YEARS of excuses from uncle
I remember when the game came out one of googles most looked up questions at the time was was that “sickness” uncle had since it did sound like BS to be as lazy as he was
As someone who jumped into RD2 kinda blind,
I like the Uncle/Red Harlow theory but i understand that its not possible.
HOW I view it,
Red dead Revolver is you playing the legend.
He couldn’t leave because where would he go aside from a poorhouse. Who would let a old man that physically can’t work leech off them for free.
Uncle was way smarter than the rest of the gang and by extension the audience gave him any credit for.
It's worth noting that Uncle's mission with the cattle gains you access to the Carcano Rifle 2 chapters early so it's very much worth doing his mission. With the exploit to de-scope the sniper rifles, the Carcano ends up being the best bolt action.
Lum-baa-o? Its lum-bay-go!
After I did the mission, I greeted uncle and the dialogue I got was John asking about uncle’s back and if it’s feeling better
Arthur wheezing and calling Uncle a compulsive liar makes me laugh so hard!!
Lumbago is not a mysterious disease. It’s lower back pain. The name comes from the acronym, “LBG”
In the mission where you go robbing with uncle, bill and charles. When you are at the wagon, Uncle loses his beard and he looks like Red Harlow there for a moment. It's a cool easter egg.
Honestly with how he walks in RDR1, he might actually have a back problem.
Charles is a reference to Red Harlow, He burned his hand in the first mission, and he is half native both parents killed. I would argue to be the most logical
I'm gonna have a big chuckle if it's revealed Uncle's name is Reggie Harlow and that'd be the closest we'll get to confirming that he is Red Harlow.
Whenever things got real uncle forgot about lumbago and got busy
He's lazy but also is ready to do real work when he needs to
Uncles use to the gang is just that, hes an uncle. He comes off as a light hearted, doggish old drunk (because he is). that allows him to keep his ear to the ground for the rest of the gang so to speak. He's the guy they can send into town and nobody is gonna question if he's an outlaw or not and are more likely to forget he ever existed.
Imo uncle is one of the most under appreciated characters ever
The Skinner Brothers were actually trying to cure Uncle's lumbago.
The worse tragedy is his L U M B A G O
I will say he did get John on track to getting his ranch up and running by being the voice he needed to hear
Uncle outlived lumbago and thats the true redemption of this story.
Jack taking Uncle's rifle is a nice touch
Uncle was annoying to me at first that quickly became one of my favorite characters he's so wholesome and funny as hell
@@RelarinScenes i would do the same thing if i was inm his position
he had no loyalty to the indians and no promises to them as he had towards the gang
You can see the families heart just drop into a black hole when he passed John literally wanted them to all make it out alive and be safe
one thing is for sure he is sure as hell impossible to forget
Uncle had wisdom, and a gang of thieves and cutthroats don't have much use for wisdom.
Uncle might’ve been lazy but he certainly went down like a man when it came to protecting HIS family.
he is the Red harlow you can't change my mind
You mean Beechers Hope. That’s where John’s house is in both games.
lazy and smart can be an effective combo at times, means they have the means to figure out how to do a hard job faster and more conveniently rather than using tough conventional means
my theory with uncle is that hes a distant relative of either hosea or dutch (though i imagine more likely to be hosea), close enough to be familar but distant enough to not be close. as mentioned in the video hes sort of always been down and out so its possible they crossed paths, recognized each other, and as uncle does he used that familiarity to talk his way into joining up with the gang (i can imagine him saying something about providing "valuable advice and information"). it would explain both why hes allowed to stick around providing very little without ever being expected to really pull his weight and his nickname, as uncle could be a general term of endearment because of his relationship to hosea
Im glad im not the only one who actually likes uncle. What the skinners did to him actually pissed me off.
Who would've thought id care more about fictional characters than actual people lol
I love Uncle and his dumb leads 😂❤.
The way John talks to Uncle in RDR I always cracks me, "sine you are still alive" 😂
We often forget he helped people get away from the toxicity in chapter 6 he may be lazy but is important to the series also him being red make so much sense
"He's actually been pretty useful, in a useless sort of way"
THE ONE SHOT KID!!!
Lumbago isn't mysterious at all Uncles back hurts all the time. Yep its that simple boys and ghouls.
Bro said lumbogo instead of lumbago
Uncle is loyal, probably the most loyal character in the game.
I’d like to see a discussion on Trelawny
He is such a fun character!
Lambaaago seriously.
It's really serious health condition
Well said, great work! ❤
