Oddly enough, I love compressed Barney a lot more than HL2's voice; even if the difference is just the audio quality.

Thanks for taking a look at this - brought back a lot of good memories! The reason the shotgun is weird is because I did the animations for it and I am definitely not a professional animator lol.
Also we actually only used spirit of half-life in the point insertion demo, we stopped using it for the ravenholm demo and iirc magicnipples wrote the weapon sway code.
All these 'demakes' shows me that not only technology advanced, but there was massive leap forward in design and game understanding in general over the years. I mean if modern developers would be stuck with old game engine and old PC's they would still make batter game than it was 20 years ago.

I think mod will benefit if they de-make all of the models like they did with Metrocops, but it's just my suggestion - it's still looks awesome even if unfinished!
Hope it will come out of hiatus though.
The Metrocop model was actually taken from another creator because that model was created as a player model for Half-Life 1 back in 2009-2010 for Gamebanana/FPS Banana.
So technically speaking, the developers of this mod didn't make the Metrocop model.
I really hope they do release an update for this mod, it had some really promising stuff in the update from 3 years ago like new models that aren't just the hl2 models in hl1.
I love the concept of demakes, its so surreal and intresting people would turn a game to be a old game in another engine, half life 2 classic has quite a potential as a demake, It always makes me chuckle when seeing barney being a master of disguise :D

The resources for this mod were made way before this mod became a thing. Like most models like Metrocop, Combine Soldiers and weapons got ported in 2010-2012 in Gamebanana. I have them all archived because you can't find them online these days.

@Radiation Hazard Fun fact, when we were doing progress on the project for HL2C, I had made a new helmet model for the metrocop and created a barney variant using the HL1-styled barney head. You can find it on the original PCGamer post when we released the Ravenholm demo.
But who actually made the Metrocop model? Because the original upload of said model goes back all the way to 2009/2010 in Gamebanana (FPS Banana back then) when it was released as a player model for HL1. The original author wasn't credited in the ModDB page.
@@XanderNiles the model for the metrocop was made by the creator of something called "snowball mod". We got permission sometime before I came along because before the Metrocops, we had Barney NPCs guarding the doors. We also had the Alyx model from the creator. As to why they don't show up in credits, most likely because most of the team were working on the demo stuff and just never get the credits finalized. Several people also may have changed their screen names over time so it could also be that. I dont remember who had made the models originally because it's been a while since I'd worked on the project, but it was the first model I'd worked with to make the Barney model to replace the one we had then (master of disguise Barney)
It is always sad when good mods get canceled. :'(

I read the devs ported the "func_vehicle" entity from CS1.6.
That is a very basic vehicle with free movement made out of brushes, as far I know.
@@quiver5756 the entity belongs to Half-Life not Counter-Strike. The func vehicle entity was a leftover that the creators of CS never bother to remove.
@@quiver5756 Oh if THAT"S how they are gonna do it then you better be prepared to die from physics crush damage or the vehicle getting irrecoverably stuck on some other prop every 10 seconds. Back in the day we used to play knife maps on CS 1.6 and some of them had vehicles. It was always a coin toss to even touch on of those death traps. Was lulzy though.
The combine guards look like spurdo sparde.
This mod is something that can consistently get you thinking, how would striders work? How would the AR2 alt work, JESUS CHRIST that’s impressive, and what I can think of, vehicles, they kinda exist but how would they get the Car working? Or the boat?
One thing I forgot to show was that the "AR2" (which was a crowbar placeholder) actually has the alt-fire of shooting a energy ball.

Already played that when it came out, and I was blown away by the great effort that the team put on making such thing possible!
To me these kinds of projects always feel like they were doomed from the moment of inception, that's why I'm kind of meh for the Black Mesa Classic.
Don't get me wrong, I love modern games made on old engines. Ion Fury, Aeon: Wrath of Ruin, Arcane Dimensions mod for Quake come to mind as perfect examples of what can be done with old engines when you have a solid vision and modern tools that help you tweak the engine to its absolute limits.
These demakes however follow the vision you've seen before, but due to limitations of the engine what you're seeing is that vision becoming an incomplete version of itself.

This gives me some HL2 Beta vibes. And that makes sense. I heard somewhere that the Source Engine originally was based off Gold Src, and a lot of the HL2 beta has a low poly-ness and low quality of textures that bear a resemblance to HL1
it would be so cool if there was a mod that just changed the textures and models of hl2 to look more like hl1, it might look cool

Well, it’s a demake of Half-Life 2 from Source to GoldSrc.
So it was improved and did better at feeling like HL2 instead of some other game with Gordon and Barney.

tbh i felt that these models are kinda jarring for a HL2 demake on Goldsrc
they could use some of the npc's animation from Condition Zero Deleted Scenes for the npc's animation instead for smoother anims (the TMP & MAC 10 anims would be perfect for Metrocop that use MP7 & use MP5 anims for Combine soldiers that wielding MP7), thats all i have to say about this mod

The lighting looks like the worst part of the first map. And a few details. I think it can be improved by a lot even on that old engine. Ravenholm looks way better, they nailed it!

I really like this demo and would love to see a fully completed version one day, even though that's very unlikely. I also think that if it does get developed further it should look more like the Ravenholm section with low poly models and textures rather than the other sections where a few too many assets were just ported straight from HL2. Like, recreating HL2 in the GoldSrc engine is a pretty odd thing to do, and I can't imagine any reason for doing that other than the sheer curiosity of seeing how you could try to do the things HL2 does in the GoldSrc engine. So why would you, for example, port over the HL2 first person weapon models and animations so that they don't look any different? Why would you keep the HL2 G-Man model when the HL1 model is already there waiting to be used, especially when you've already gone to the effort of replacing Barney with the HL1 model? I know this is just an unpolished demo from years ago but it still annoys me as those things go directly against the spirit of the project.
Hah! I figured it was SoHL when I saw the gravity gun gameplay with the sawblades. It manages all that with a complicated entity based vector math system that you need to do on a map to map basis.
For a modified modbase boasting really promising features I wonder why there aren't that many mods that do end up using those features. In fact, it supposedly supports 3D skyboxes! Yet as you see in the video this mod doesn't use it.

@@Clone3A7 We essentially did all the vector math in the game code instead of with entities. I learned that the physics used by func_pushables is surprisingly competent.
Realistically if you wanted to recreate every level in HL2 you could use the HL2 engine but import all of your low quality textures and sfx and largely stick to the limits of Goldsource where possible

A GoldSrc HL2 on PS2 or Dreamcast would've been so cool! There's some mods for those versions of the game, so I wonder if it would be possible to convert this mod for PS2/DC (if it relies on script extenders, likely not).
