The fact that valve has a whole SERIES reserved only to revolutionize gaming is insane. I think the reason it's taken this long to get a new HL is because these huge technological leaps have slowed down since 2007

Honestly at this point Valve has proven themselves. No one is genuinely expecting them to change this much about the industry or be so far ahead that other studios genuinely have to study what they did *3 times* in a row.
People will just accept a game with good Level design, a variety of enemies to fight, and a good overarching Story and call it a day.

    • @invalid_user_handle
      @invalid_user_handle 5 месяцев назад +18

Despite this, Valve will try incessently to make the best-possible game they can, regardless of the expectations of their fans. Almost every game they've made has been nigh-perfect (we ignore Artifact, it was an outlier and should not be counted), and that's a standard they refuse to give up. There's been at least 3 previous attempts to make a Half-Life 3, and each one died out because it wasn't good enough. Alyx was the 4th attempt at another Half-Life game, and it's the first one since Episode 2 to succeed. Valve suffers from perfectionism, and while it definitely has it's perks, it makes expecting a consistent development schedule a pipe-dream...

Along with some sort of walking pad so you can get rid of teleporting and just walk instead, now *THAT* would be something I would find worth investing in. As it stand now though, no thanks you.

half life alyx did take a lot of compromises with its design but for a reason a lot of people will respect: motion sickness. boneworks, blade and sorcery, etc. they all pretty much take no compromises with their movement and handling of guns and weapons, but half life alyx not only doesnt allow you to hold a weapon 2 handed (besides that weird cup grip thing), but it doesnt let you sprint or jump. barely any movement options + small arsenal = bad game, right? but the way that it makes up for it is in the atmoshpere, storytelling and fun combat puzzles/normal puzzles. most vr games at the moment dont really excel at any of that at the moment and are just sandbox games. half life alyx gives you a set of enemies and like maximum 4 weapons to use to defeat them. its great most of the time! and after defeating them you sit back and look at the sky and beautiful graphics.
tldr: half life alyx went the safe route with its gameplay for motion sickness but it still makes the most of what it has with graphics, storytelling, combat and puzzles

Valve is in a very unique and fortunate position where they don't NEED to make games anymore, so whenever they do make a new game it's all the more special because it means the devs _really_ wanted to make that game and they always strive to innovate with game design or push tech forward in some way, and if there's no significant innovation or push for tech they want to make, they simply don't make a game, even if it means not seeing a game from Valve in over a decade at a time, I'm glad they do things that way.

Plus, not having it ensures the other two seem super incredible. Time and time again we've seen sequels destroy a series or cheapen an original (not a video game but The Matrix is a prime example of this, the Star Wars from Disney some say do that as well).

I came to this conclusion myself, that in order for them to top all of their other work, The game will at least need to have actual believable NPCs.
But with all the rendering technologies currently being tested and developed, and all of the work that is going into using AI to make things more efficient, I think it is probably going to take advantage of AI rendering and physics as well.
They might want to use their position and all their money to be the first to create a truly believable game environment. In order for the game to have the same impact as the first two, it basically will have to come to that, inevitably, I think.
And then half-life 4 will be the first realistic game to take place inside the matrix.

With the AI revolution happening currently and major strides in the "inteligence" of it, might I interest you in a theory?
Half-Life 3 will come out, and it will have fully conscious and autonomous characters, and you will be able to have conversations with them through your own microphone. They will have all of the knowledge of the character and will be absorbing more information in real time. They will not be aware that they are inside of a video game however. Now I believe Valve to be an ethical company, so they will have a failsafe for the instance of a character gaining that level of consciousness, save for one character: the G-Man. He will be allowed to gain not only the knowledge of one of your playthroughs but of everyone's playthroughs, and he will be able to act based on that knowledge somehow; think Flowey from Undertale or Monika from Doki Doki, but on steroids.
It's 2035; you still haven't booked a therapy appointment, but you just bought a new game called Half-Life 3 and have spent the last several hours talking to a man named Eli in a hangar about your life's issues, and he has been patient with you. But Gordon, please, for the love of God, can we get a move on? The borealis is still out there along with Judith, and Alyx was taken by the G-man, so we can either talk about it on the way or after the combine is off this FUCKING PLANET!

With the recent breakthroughs in deep learning, machine learning, and AI-thanks to the recent advancements in computing power-I wouldn't be surprised if Valve tried to utilize these in Half-Life 3. Imagine a game where all NPCs are unique to some extent. Each NPC is free to say whatever they want based on their training, and each NPC is allowed to act in absolutely unique ways: hiding, attacking, crouching, deceiving players, and more. The possibilities are beyond human understanding. It's such a vast field of unexplored possibilities for the game industry, requiring a tremendous amount of data and an insanely high budget. If we were ever to encounter such a game, I think Valve would be the first to create one.

      @user-wt6nu6cd7w Месяц назад

Of course, I believe that the main plot should be directed by people rather than AI. However, fight scenes are another matter. Let's take combines as an example. They can be fully powered by a model that is pre-trained on a large dataset of real users' actions (these can be gathered from games like CS:GO, for instance). Additionally, it trains based on the actions of the user who is playing the game at that moment. Did a certain tactic work against one opponent? Well, it seems like every other NPC who was there saw that and now anticipates such a move from you. You need to think quickly and find another way to take them down.

One of the things that made me respect Valve as a developer is that they do not do the mistakes of 3D Realms and Ubisoft in announcing certain games and having the words: "when it's done" or something like that. Yes, people were expecting and hoping for Half Life 3 after the cliffhanger in Episode 2 but Valve as far as I can tell never hyped nor denied anything related to the game. If they want to work on Half Life 3, they had to have a good reason to and not just for the sake of appeasing paying customers. It is as you said, too. Each game (not including the Episodes) showcases a technological innovation. Half Life 1 provided a Quake-game with a very immersive story for it's time, Half Life 2 provided that and added new physics toys for it's players to enjoy. Episodes 1 and 2 were more or less an experiment to see if they could go for the less content, cheap price approach to expansions. And lastly, Half-Life Alyx showcased how great games can be even when using something as niche as VR.

The issue is that, going from HL1 to HL2 was such a big jump, going from this small research base to now an entire city with this big enemy threat they thought up just for this new game, that now everyone expects them to make an equally big jump to the next game and therefore the expectancy and overwhelming nature of such a thing comes with it. What's going to be the new thing? That's what everyone wants to know, and it's hard to make such a big jump for a second time..

@@AngryApple Odyssey was a good game and that ending was good too. I haven't played HLA. Try Outer Wilds, Echoes of the Eye has an insane twist and the base game is amazing too.

Valve is like the Rolls Royce of game making I swear. The sheer quality and attention to detail is beyond anything I've seen from other games. Some have got close, and possibly been better in some areas. But no game creates an entire feeling, an experience, an atmosphere on the level of Valve. Every one of their story driven games feels unsettling, exciting, and just so incredibly immersive. They nail everything. The gameplay, the dialogue, story and art design. I reaaaaaaaly hope for more Half Life.

I read a youtube comment on a HL3 related video a few months back that really resonated with me, so I'll repeat it.
The main reason we have not seen a Half Life 3, is because Valve doesn't choose half measures with games. If it's anything short of almost perfect, it doesn't get released.
-- Half Life did something that is almost impossible, it revolutionized the FPS Genre.... and it did it TWICE.... Valve is not releasing a Half Life 3 game that doesn't live up to its own legacy..--

Half-Life 3's announcement will be so groundbreaking, that even a black screen with the hazardous materials music, will get people hyped. That's how much people want HL3.

Reminder: We did not expect Half-Life 3, we weren't at first waiting for HL3. We expected Half-Life 2 Episode 3 to complete the story. Then as years went on, it no longer made sense to wait for it, as it was obviously not coming, the time window for it had come and gone. So people started waiting for Half-Life 3 instead.
What now, what new tech? Almost everyone has a slightly raytracing capable GPU, more will have in a couple years. The new Spiderman game comes out with raytracing as a hard requirement, and it shouldn't even need much performance out of RT unit, it's been put to smart use. This tech has got to be good for something.

The HL2 episodes were also about tech though, this is why it stopped after 2 (like you said, no tech, no game). Ep1 is about co-op with a strong, complex AI partner through Alyx, and Ep2 is about large outdoor areas. It also applies to the Portal series: Portal is about the portal tech made by DigiPen students for Narbacular Drop, and Portal 2 about the gel tech also developped by DigiPen students, for Tag: The Power of Paint.

Ngl, I think the lore reason why Half Life ALYX came out was to remove the possibility of Epsitle 3 thus making HL2:EP3 or HL3 possible

Well if they started making HL3 after Alyx then I guess they are 3-4 years in development.... Which I would imagine that they are since the story of Alyx tied into HL-Episode 2.

Just wild speculations but my guess is HL Alyx 2 or HL3 will be released when valve is ready to release an index 2. With Alyx they wanted to show off the best of VR and I think they correctly assessed that trying to develop for traditional & VR simultaneously would make both experiences worse. Also giving us the post credit scene we saw I think hints at a continuation of VR gameplay. I think the timing of game development and hardware development in this case may line up, and a new HL game would be a great way to drive further VR adoption, move headsets, highlight any new tech on a headset.

About the expansions, they might not have added new tech and be revolutionary but a new concept and features:
Opposing Force:Experience the Black Mesa incident from a new perspective the evil one it introduces squad mechanics, new weapons and enemies
Decay(PS2 exclusive):New perspective and co-op gameplay you have never seen before
Blue Shift:Again new perspective, the HD pack and I think it runs on a different version of the GoldSrc engine?
Episode 1:New HDR lighting and shading
Episode 2:Open forest environments more destruction and improved engine from EP1.
NOTE:The PS2 exclusive of Half-Life has slightly altered HD models which have expressions including eye movement, scientists have transparent glasses and higher quality textures over the PC versions of Half-Life and its expansions

I would like it if both vr and flat screen could be supported, that would be really cool. Only problem would be that its really risky, and would be really tedious on just trying to make movement and gunplay work on both. But that’s just my opinion (yes I am a Vr fan, and I understand not everything needs to be in VR) but other than that being a gen z who played half life 1 and half life Alyx and now is in the middle of half life 2, ITS SO COOL. Makes me heavily appreciate the series more with how charming each one was.

we're a bit in a "post-revolution" era for graphics an physics tech. Of course they can always be improved, but the differences will never be as stark as they were in the 90s and 2000s.

I feel like theyll ship a massive gmod update with half life 3, if not just a gmod 2. I imagine the whole point of hl3 will be to make the absolute best physics and gameplay engine hands down, with gmod 2 having more focus on an incredibly indepth and complex sandbox and probably a larger focus on animation and video creation.
