Shows you what a horrible mental space Trent was in when he wrote this song. At the age he wrote it having similar feelings as someone with as storied a life as Cash.
Sad Kermit covers it the Johnny Cash way. The video isn't for everyone (there is a Ms. Piggy nip pick and simulated sex) but there is a moment when he sings 'Everyone I know goes away in the end' and they flash on a picture of Jim Henson and I just tear up every time.
it's amazing that with the exact same lyrics (well except for the crown of thorns part) he makes it an entirely different song just with the feeling in his voice
And in his last interview John said : "I expect my life to be over soon..." ...and he was right. His illnesses and of course the loss of June in combination made him let go. Nothing more to live for. So sad! 😢
Video filmed in John's home. The Lady standing in the stairs watching was his wife the famed June Carter. The clips of her wasn't meant to be in the video, but the producer wanted to keep her in there. Look at the pain in her face watching her loved husband so sick and near death. June died not long after this... and just weeks later John followed her caused by his illnesses and ALSO from heartbreak of losing June. I hope they're happy together again somewhere....
Exactly, his love for June was legendary. Also there is this Quote from Reznor praising Cash's interpretation of the song for its "sincerity and meaning", going so far as to say "that song isn't mine anymore". As you know, Reznor actually wrote and performed the original with 9 Inch Nails! Thank You Dag, Be Well and have a wonderful Holiday......
From what I hear, June was sleeping upstairs, heard Cash Singing, and came down the stairs there to watch him. She was never meant to be in this video like this, but it just makes it so much better. She'll be remembered in this video with Cash for years to come. It's a tribute to both of them. I'm was never a big Cash fan. I'm not a big country music person, but I have to say this is the best Music Video ever. It is his Goodbye Eulogy. You see his Mom in that first picture. From what I hear, ran the Cash Museum. When she died it closed down and so we see in the video of what's left inside the place including one of is Gold Records on the floor. The White House is his childhood home. They were a poor family. It's also where his Older brother died who was seriously injured in an accident at his job in a high school when he was pulled into an unguarded table saw while cutting oak into fence posts, and was almost cut in two. He died from his injuries a week later. The Piano he's playing, when he closed it, he never opened it and played it ever again. We all know he's well known as the Man in Black. Even in this video you see him all dressed up in black. You see many of his awards in his house when the lights are turned on. He was always working. Always on Tour. Even after doing this video, he was working on other things. His Wife died I think about a year after this video was done. She died after complications from heart surgery. She was 73. 4 months later Johny Cash died. Passed away at Baptist Hospital, succumbing to respiratory failure brought on by complications from diabetes. He was 71 years old. I believe he just wasn't taking care of himself after his wife died and Diabetes is pretty serious. Cash really made this Cover Song his own. Same song and Lyrics and yet completely different meanings. If it wasn't for June Cash, Johny would have died long before he did. He didn't last long when she did die.
@@MrsPenPal Like I had said Johnny was one of the Very Best, But, to me Waylon Jennings was the Greatest, they played together for years and had a very interesting life on the Road. You might give Waylon a listen he has some very great songs!!! God Bless you...
This song is very hard. It was written and first recorded by Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails. After Cash released his cover, Reznor praised it and said “this is not my song anymore”. 😢🌹
The line "And you could have it all - my empire of dirt" and him dumping the wine is him saying, all of this "stuff" that I worked so hard my whole life for...my career...my success...my "things" are meaningless. And I wish I had realized much earlier in life the things that are really important and should be strived for and cherished. It's a sobering message that reminds us all to focus our lives and our efforts towards the things that really hold meaning and really matter.
This song makes you question your life choices and the path you made up to now.. it also reminds me that our time is limited and to be the best we can be despite our mistakes

Wow! I clicked on the video for Johnny Cash, but stuck around because of your amazing beauty and understanding of this wonderful song. Great Reaction Video!!!!
That's the beauty of music. It allows you to enter the mind of the composer and feel what they feel. That's why music transcends all languages, binding everyone to a common thread of emotion.
Genuinely the most beautiful song I have ever heard in my life. It touches you in ways that you didn’t know a song could touch you. I cry almost every time I hear it. It’s relatable in the strangest yet most common way possible. The music is so simple yet so overwhelming. What a legend. I’m so happy that you discovered it ❤️
One of the most powerful images for me is the shattered Columbia record. Columbia dropped him after nearly fifty years with the label and he never forgave or forgot it.
That is a good point, I did not think about that. It is anyway a great symbol for the Empire of Dirt. A Gold record, the thing a musician can dream about, being just nothing. You work all your life give a lot of things up, make bad decisions in the process and end up with... that.
@@LLiivveeeevviiLL all of those Rick Rubin produced American Recordings that JC did at the end of his life are brilliant. There is very little production to them so you can hear his flats and sharps. Those recordings were a final and uncompromising stand. They were a declaration of who JC was.
Your observation of how he gets under your skin as he progresses speaks to the powerful way he strips away the facades that we hide behind and makes us feel emotions as raw as they can come. I teared up the first time I heard the song, but when I saw the music video I cried like a baby. The images, lyrics, and music, combine to make the most powerful delivery of a message that I have ever felt. This was Johnny's goodbye gift to his fans, and an apology to those he hurt during the bad times in his life/career. He earned his wisdom in a hard way, and I truly believe that he shared it with us in hopes that we can keep from making mistakes that we will regret like he does. Rest in peace, our beloved Man in Black, and thank you for touching our hearts and reminding us what is truly important in life.

You know, english is not my native language. It´s german. So, when I first encountered this track, I didn´t really listen to what he´s saying all about, what the text means. But you need no language to understand. In the beginning there was not the word. There was vibration (frequency). And out of this vibration, we form words, to build our thoughts. Thanks for your decision to come down here.

Don't ever be sorry about emotional reactions .... it's why us old folks watch yall younger folks react to these songs... you do a fantastic job young lady!
I have tears welling up each and every time I listen to this song. And watching all these other people reactions on youtube I get a feel like he is touching a fundamental truth at the core of human beings efforts. It transcends his personal story, how tragical it may have been. Thinking about which other song touched me so deeply I can only think of Nina Simones - Stars, which could be understood like a universal resumée of life as well.
I love your very heartfelt and genuine reaction. Johnny’s timbre has always been that unmistakable baritone which obviously developed that extra raspiness later in his life. To me, if the earth itself had the ability to speak through a human voice, it would be that of Cash. Another suggestion for a Johnny Cash vocal analysis would be for “We’re You There? (when they crucified my Lord)” It is performed with his wife’s family. (The Carter Family) There are many recordings of it. Just for audio, the version on Johnny Cash Live At Madison Square Garden is superb. There are many video performances to choose from as well.
your comments show that you are a very well read and intellectual person. This song is the hardest on me because I am 62 years old and I grew up as a big fan of Johnny. His contribution to American music and culture was very great. But this song is so damn sad. And reminiscent of his entire life, he was a man very acquainted with tragedy. The man in Black.

I’ve heard it 100s of times and I still cry. This was his last song. He made the video in Feb. 2003, his wife died in May 2003 and Johnny died in Sept. 2003. You should watch “Walk the Line”. It shows you his life and it was horrendous!
Sadness and regret about things in our past is a human experience. Old age and death calling the meaning of our lives into question is a human experience. That is why almost anyone can relate to this song--at least on an emotional level. We all share these emotions.
This is obviously a very emotional performance by the "Man in Black." And it is made even more so for me, by the fact that I grew up listening to his music. I have always been very fond of this man and it is not easy to put into words, how sad this makes me feel. There will never be another Johnny Cash.
I first heard this song on spotify I think, i didnt know it was Johnny Cash singing. Now that I know more about Johnny Cash and watching the video it definitely made me tear up... Also the fact that he died 1 year after this song makes it even sadder.
The song was actually written by Trent Rezner of the band Nine Inch Nails, but when he heard Johnny Cash's version was blown away and said, "that song isn't mine anymore." That is the ultimate compliment.
I'm pretty sure this song makes everyone cry. The greatest cover of all time IMHO.

Johnny dealt with addiction also... I believe in the 60s... So this fit him to a tee and was a fitting end to this legend.

💕 🇩🇪 💕
Don't be sorry it's an imotional song when he played it to his daughter she said " it's like your saying goodbye" he replied I am ,RIP Mr cash :)

A heartfelt reaction, the best kind... I can't even start to give you the history of this legend of country music, he spent decades at the top of his craft.....things like "Falsom prison blues", "a boy named Sue" just to name 2... You've started a heck of a journey.. Hi to brother Fluffy too👋 lol, nice hat, though if you go down the country music road you had better get a stetson...
Awwh Hi Mark I actually have a Stetson only I didn’t know this song would need it. Thanks for saying Hi to Fluffy 💕

I have seen this soooo many times, so many reactions to this and the combination of the music and the powerfull imagery get me, every... time... the way he closes his piano in the end, the finality of it. it hits hard

One of the most powerful songs, one of the most powerful performances ever.
You can say that again💕
You should check out Johnny cash - man in black. You can hear him in his younger years and learn how he stood for the people who didn’t have a voice back then and even now
Thanks Treston💕
Beautiful Song! Timeless...watch the movie about his life . this song will take on a whole new meaning

Finally a genuine reaction to such an emotional song and video
Wow 💕
Great reaction.
Wow Larry this song 💕
Thanks Fluffy's Mom. Needed the smile and the tear!!!
Hi Trubble good to see you again our ever attentive PenPal 💕
Johnny made this his own, with its own meaning. I love both versions, but this is the better one. Sorry Trent!
Now when Trent preformes he does johnys version
i would not be serprised if trend likes this verson better altho i have no source for this.
Well said Michael !
looking lovely as always
Awwh thanks fam💕
I love your very heartfelt and genuine reaction. Johnny’s timbre has always been that unmistakable baritone which obviously developed that extra raspiness later in his life. To me, if the earth itself had the ability to speak through a human voice, it would be that of Cash.
Another suggestion for a Johnny Cash vocal analysis would be for “We’re You There? (when they crucified my Lord)”
It is performed with his wife’s family. (The Carter Family) There are many recordings of it. Just for audio, the version on Johnny Cash Live At Madison Square Garden is superb. There are many video performances to choose from as well.
Thank You. First "reaction" I've found that just reacted.
your comments show that you are a very well read and intellectual person. This song is the hardest on me because I am 62 years old and I grew up as a big fan of Johnny. His contribution to American music and culture was very great. But this song is so damn sad. And reminiscent of his entire life, he was a man very acquainted with tragedy. The man in Black.
Hi Kyle thanks for writing in very thoughtful of you to share. Welcome to the PenPal Family 💕
Hands down fav song & music vid ever!🙏..saw this video after seeing the man in black movie..knowing his life story makes it even more poignant..

Powerful song
Hi Bruce K! Yes indeed💕
I’ve heard it 100s of times and I still cry. This was his last song. He made the video in Feb. 2003, his wife died in May 2003 and Johnny died in Sept. 2003. You should watch “Walk the Line”. It shows you his life and it was horrendous!
Thanks L Gamer💕
Sadness and regret about things in our past is a human experience. Old age and death calling the meaning of our lives into question is a human experience. That is why almost anyone can relate to this song--at least on an emotional level. We all share these emotions.
Hi Kelly Well said💕 Welcome to the PenPalFam 💕
This is obviously a very emotional performance by the "Man in Black." And it is made even more so for me, by the fact that I grew up listening to his music. I have always been very fond of this man and it is not easy to put into words, how sad this makes me feel. There will never be another Johnny Cash.
💕💕💕💕
I'm crying too
Its a Beautiful song by nine inch nails but Johnny Cash gave it such soul its incredible!
I first heard this song on spotify I think, i didnt know it was Johnny Cash singing. Now that I know more about Johnny Cash and watching the video it definitely made me tear up... Also the fact that he died 1 year after this song makes it even sadder.
My dear. Indeed sad. Glad he left a legacy for us to find out about his work. This song is so masterfully done
Even though his voice is older, when you hear your next Johnny Cash song you will recognize it as him immediately.
No matter how big and tough you are....
If you don't fight back tears when this plays...
You need waking up !
The song was actually written by Trent Rezner of the band Nine Inch Nails, but when he heard Johnny Cash's version was blown away and said, "that song isn't mine anymore." That is the ultimate compliment.
That’s amazing
You had a very truthful reaction. Johnny was dying. His wife had just died. This was his way of saying goodbye.
😭🌸💫
I’m a 6’3”, 57 year old man and this makes me cry every time.😢
Sadly his wife in the video died a few months after this was made, and he followed her a few months later.
😭😭 hi Joe💕
