Trent Reznor from Nine Inch Nails, wrote this song. After hearing Johnny Cash's version, Reznor was so moved at Cash's rendition that he said, "Its Johnny's song now"
You essentially got the meaning of this song. When Johnny saw the lyrics for this song, originally written for a different reason (addiction), he saw it as a fitting summary of his life. The pain he feels and sings about are the regrets in his life, the guilt of his brother’s accidental death when they were children, he carried his entire life. The failure of his first marriage, the effect it had on those children, his own addiction problems (which he beat, by the way). The second half is about asking forgivenesses for all these things, he was a very spiritual man. We all have regrets in life.
The two different interpretations of this song by Trent and Johnny. Trent, coming from a place of pain and depression of a young man, possibly considering ending his life. And Johnny, coming from a place of regret and loneliness of an old man close to the end of his life. Probably the strongest song ever that has the same lyrics but such a contrast of meaning.
Amen I was first drawn to this song as a young man and at 45 Johnny Cash makes me cry every time I hear it but I still remember the dark days before too
@@davidmartin7561 Thanks for the positivity. Very much appreciated and it’s really nice hear that. Love you too. Take care, keep up that positivity. It really helps. That got a smile from me. Thank you.

It’s amazing a 27 year old man wrote this song. Trent is a musical genius and his lyrics combined with Johnny’s pathos makes me tear up everytime I hear it.
Hello, Rebekah. Johnny Cash was in the latter stages of his life and career which saw much reward after sometimes terrific risk, to both himself, his family, his career, and those who cared dearly for the Man in Black. Ravaged by time, addiction, and self abuse, he still managed to convey the message of God through his talent through his ravaged voice and music. As long as he had his wife, June, he could weather anything and soldier on. But after she passed, his exhausted spirit could no longer carry on the burden of life. He and June are together now, for eternity, to love each other in the afterlife as they did while here on Earth. He delivered the message. Enjoy the eternal reward.
This song still make me cry. Heard this song when my beloved Maternal Grandfather died from Coronavirus in January 2021. Rest In Peace Grandfather Leslie and Grandma Irene. I Miss You So Much and Miss You Terribly - Fly High xxxxx
They say that eyes are the window to the soul. So when you said "his pain is still inside of me", I could tell by the look in your eyes that you really meant it. I just really appreciate the respect you give the artists you react to.
Johnny Cash has that specific style, together with that awesome voice he created an incredible atmosphere and with moments full of goosebumps. The man in black 🖤 A man that had a lot to say. Johnny Cash's health was failing in 2002 when the recorded this. It was released in March 2003. His wife, June, in the video passed away in May 2003 and Johnny passed in Sept 2003. Many believe he passed quickly after June's passing due to a broken heart.

Hi Rebeka, I'm from and live in Nashville Tennessee. I grew up across the Old Hickory lake from Johnny Cash my Labrador Retriever would grab the tennis balls out of the lake that people would hit over the fence and into the lake I had 100s of them. He is a true legend that like Elvis came from nothing to the top.
It put tears in my eyes when he closes the piano at the end. I really understand the line that says "Everyone I know goes away in the end". I'm getting up in years and I see this all the time. Artists that I listened to in the '70s and '80s are slowly going away. I know at some point it will be me. Let's be nice to people. Stay safe and keep doing what you're doing. You have a very good heart.
Johnny recorded this song in 2002. June Carter Cash, his wife of 35 years, passed in May of the following year. Johnny passed in September. This was his final testament. Powerful stuff. You don't feel something listening to this, you have no soul.
Your reaction is on point. This song gets me every time I hear/watch it and it takes me a good couple minutes to collect myself and dry my eyes mostly because I know what this song represents to Johnny and June and what was to follow.
It is a cover of Nine Inch Nails song wrote and sung by Trent Reznor and originally I think if I remember rightly it was originally about suicide. Johnny's version is about a person getting older and reaching the end of his life and the regrets he faces (if you know his life story it is even more poignant as you find out about the demons he fought through his life). Trent after seeing the video said that it was Johnny Cash's song now. The woman on the stairs was his wife, June Carter. She was a member of a famous family in her own right, The Carter Family who sang Gospel and Country from the 1920's onwards. June died very shortly after this was filmed and Johnny shortly after that.
The album this song had been featured on had been available for a few months when the director of this music video Mark Romanek, who had just made the film ONE HOUR PHOTO with Robin Williams, pitched to make this video and pay for it himself because the record company had initially thought the window of interest had already passed. It wound up being nominated for several awards, and of course, captured one of the last appearances of Johnny and his wife June Carter.
After Johnny recorded this song he had his daughter listen to it. She said to him, "It sound like you're saying Goodbye", to which Johnny replied, "I am". June passed away very soon after and Johnny soon followed. Still brings a tear to my eye. RIP June, RIP Johnny
A lot of indelible images from this video. The flood rising just as the piano and strings start rising, as if to say everything you think is permanent is slowly cracking and rotting behind the scenes, then crumbling, then suddenly washed away. That brief shot of Johnny wringing his hands really lets you know he means this -- and that he's anticipating soon being before his Maker to account for the things he has done. While in the meantime his Maker shows up on a cross, allowing Johnny to hurt him. The way the images speed up toward the end, like his life flashing before his eyes. Then closing that piano like a coffin lid. It is a masterpiece of music and cinema, what music videos could but refuse to be.
Cash stole that song from Trent, the Way Hendrix stole watchtower from Dylan. 100% consensual theft. Great heartfelt and entirely proper reaction, Rebeka 💞
Wow. Rebeka, how you presented this reaction; the overlay of your video with the music, your emotion, and your comments, convey the impact of Johnny's message and give it such honour and grace. Thank you for allowing us to share in such a beautiful presentation and reaction. J
When Johnny's daughter Rosanne heard this, she told Johnny, "It sounds like you are saying goodbye." He replied, "I am." The lady on the stairs is Johnny's wife, June Carter Cash. She passed away not long after this was recorded. He passed away not long after she did. Trent Reznor said that hearing this version was like losing a girlfriend. This is definitely a deep meaningful track .. Johnny had it pretty hard from at the start wen he was young and if you see the film Walk The Line ,it has the story about his older brother who had a tragic ending and Johnny's father basically blamed him for it when Johnny was only 12 years old and he had nothing at all to do with it at all ... Rebeka, the woman in the picture was his mother-in-law, whom he loved very much. The sad woman on the stairs was his wife, she knew he was suffering. She died shortly after this video was made, and he passed a few months later. The line that affects me most is the last: I would keep myself, I would find a way. He had a 50 year career and was in league right up there with Elvis, Chuck Berry, Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis and all the other rock pioneers of the 50's but in the late 70's and 80's and a good chunk of the 90's was largely dismissed though he had millions of fans still but was shut out of the main stream country music industry particularly radio and the CMA just totally blew him off though he formed a country super group with Waylon Jennings, Kris Kristofferson and Willie Nelson, The Highwaymen and had success with that but it wasn't until record producer Rick Rubin came along in 1994 and saw that there was a way to get him back on track and that's when things started to get better for him but it really took off in 2000 with the release American 3 in 2000 and his last, American 4, The Man Comes Around in 2002 that he finally got the recognition that he deserved and where this song came from along with the haunting title track. The influence he's had on everyone is massive.
The most importante things in life are family and real friends, you realize when they are gone, material posessions can not replace them is it that what the song is about?
Trent Reznor from Nine Inch Nails, wrote this song. After hearing Johnny Cash's version, Reznor was so moved at Cash's rendition that he said, "Its Johnny's song now"
