Kind of ironic because some of these people are exactly the types the song is about - long tongue liars, back biters, working in the dark against their fellow man, or facilitate, praise and give comfort to those that do those things.

The beauty of the song is he was singing this from personal experience rather than just preaching at people. He ran on for a long time with his own "demons" before it all caught up to him and he got that wake up call.

I once heard someone refer to Johnny Cash as the first gangster rapper. He had songs cover topics before it was normal.

I agree. However let's put a finer point on that. What seems very tame to young ears, sounded very different when Johnny hit the scene in the early 50's. Singing about going to jail or about prisoners that have long since served their time being stuck in jail, was unheard of.
I always like to put it this way; in 1955 the very first Rick n Roll song to hit number one was Hound Dog, a watered down version of a Big Mamma Thornton song, with the dirty lyrics taken out. However the song was written by two little Jewish white boys in NYC. That is a story unto itself. Little Richard talks about those guys and tells it best.
Anyhow, when that song hit number one do you know what number 2 was? It was "How Much is that Doggie in the Window" by Party Page.
That was the state of music before Rock n Roll made the scene.
So when he says, Johnny Cash was like the first Gangster Rapper, though it is a little over simplified, it is dead on the money.
And if anyone doubts that. Ask Ice Cube what he thinks of Johnny Cash and prepare to have your jaw fall to the ground.
Try singing along you'll notice the tempo you need to think and sing at is a lot faster than he makes it sound! Its very deceiving! Thats what has always made me feel like he is rapping!
