This one gets me every time especially the poignant ending where he closes the piano lid for the last time. This was his swan song. He passed 7 months after filming this video. 😭
A masterpiece. Rick Rubin produced Johnny Cash's cover of "Hurt", a Nine Inch Nails song. Fitting this emotional song, a goodbye in many, ways on his final album. He left his entire life in that song, scars and all, like a confession and last right. Beautiful. Hollywood is a narcissism that uses talent up until they have no product and earning value any longer, and then it spits people out.

No, this is not a cover, this is a complete rework. When Trent Reznor heard this, he said the song belongs to Johnny now.. Johnny did not know his wife, June, was on the stairs watching the filming, she was dying at the time, and did not want to ruin the take. When he showed this to his daughter, she said this sounds like a goodbye...Johnny said, "It is..." His wife June passed a few months after this was made, and Johnny followed her a few months later... This is a masterpiece
Oh stop Trent is the man he wrote this and his version is the bomb. They both are good. Johny change one word in the lyric. The last line gives it way that this a younger man. "I will find a way" and Trent surely did.
Well...but Trent wrote it, not Johnny. It was Trent's thoughts and emotions that were poured into those lyrics. It's similar to how the Gary Jules version of "Mad World" hits harder than the original by Tears For Fears, but Roland Orzabal of Tears for Fears wrote it.
I'm a 50 year old Gen X guy, I was in my late teens for NIN and always knew Johnny from my grandfather and loved him too. I to this day cry every time I watch this video. Every time. I'm glad you got to experience it.
Before the first chorus when they show his staring at the camera on stage with that blue light it always hits me like damn he’s looking into my soul ha
This woman has a pure heart and a beautiful soul! This world could use another million woman just like her! Ma’am, I bid you GOD SPEED and am here to remind you to hold on to who you are and don’t lose yourself in this world, which is so selfish, so ugly and so cold!
That song tears me to pieces. Anyone who’s struggling with addiction or knows anyone who has or is, I am praying for you. Please get yourself or your loved one the help they need. Please.
Johnny Cash was an incredible performer!!! Got back and check out some stuff when he was younger. Live at Folsom Prison would be a good place to start!!! If you can find the tape of the performance itself... You will not regret it!!!
I've listened to and watched this video at least 100 times, and it still brings tears to my eyes. If this doesn't touch you, then you have lost your humanity. Thank you for sharing your reaction.
what makes this man great is; he inspired a lot of musicians after him but he also kept up with the new musicians. this song is originally made by nine inch nails. he didn't see himself above them to cover their song. and if i remember correctly, this was his last music video. he past a couple of months after his wife june carter past. like the old folks did back in the days.
@@edreynolds8721 The only other song I'm aware of that had a cover that was appreciated and loved by the original artist in a similar way is Disturbed's cover of Simon and Garfunkel's The Sound of Silence.
He was born a poor boy in Arkansas, he reached the heights of fame, the man in black, a Legend in Music, a fine actor and a funny deep man! But he went to prison, had bad times with drugs and alcohol, cheated on both his wives but found forgiveness and redemption from God and his family and to the American Public he stood tall through it all and his drive to overcome was instilled in all of his fans! This video is basically his grand Torino moment if you think about Eastwoods movie! It is all about life, death, the highs and lows and finding your way home to God and happiness!
Johnny cash is always very hard for me to listen to. He was one of my grandfather's favorite singers and we listened to him all the time in the car no matter where we were going, whether the car was full or was just me and him. Almost 10 years after he passed it's still kind of hard to listen to him, especially this song specifically. Though It is nice whenever one comes on I take the time to reminisce on those days either happily or sadly. It's definitely nice to have such great music tied to the memories of my favorite person in the world.
This wasamong the last thing he recorded and he did it in his living room. Along with producer Rick Rubin they discusssed back and forward where to record but decided to go for Johnny's living room. This mostly cause he was in a wheel chair. Rick did some small changes/overdubs in the studio afterwards but basically what you hear is what happened. Further Rick said he couldn't listen to these recordings for two years after Johhny's passing it was simply to painful.
My mom saw his very last live performance at a diner somewhere. It's on RUclips somewhere. She is 90 now and still remembers it. I wish she had pictures or something. xo

Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails said on this song... "Having Johnny Cash, one of the greatest singer-songwriters of all time, want to cover your song, that's something that matters to me. It's not so much what other people think but the fact that this guy felt that it was worthy of interpreting."
When Trent Reznor wrote this he had no idea how JC would sing it. Once he heard Johnny sing it, he immediately signed the rights to Johnny. He knew he would do justice to the lyrics, and oh my.. what a job Johnny Casb did with it. A tear jerker indeed.

Johnny was nearly blind from diabetes by the time he made this video and there is something very haunting about him closing the piano at the end of the video and the way he runs his hands over it, like he's closed the lid on his career.
This song and video hits me like a wrecking ball to the gut every time I see it. In so many ways I associate with this song. It tells my story. So many regrets and collateral damage. So many hurt people. My shame is measured in the tears I shed. And there are many.
This song always brings back cascading emotions. Of regret, what could have been and times I wish I could feel nothing. And now I’m numb to it all. Replying old songs so I can remember how it was to feel. Of how it was to be happy.
Your analysis of this song is spot on. Johnny was my 5th cousin. I met him once at a family reunion. He was about 17, and already becoming famous. I now live about 35 miles from his childhood home (featured in this video). Amazing that he was able to so accurately describe regret and depression. My professor of economics my first year of college told us something I never forgot, and something my subsequent 55 years have proven: "To the world of commerce, you are either a product, or a consumer. You are nothing else."

The way Johnny cash sings it makes this song feel way more relatable to most people the grief of losing a loved one compared to guilt and shame of drug addiction of the original which is pretty much whispered the whole song I mean you can hear the sadness in Trent’s voice but cash’s performance is just unmatched I think his wife got him through his drug addictions in the past he died 6 months after she did and in that time he covered this song of all things.
Song hits home with me, im not rich or famous, but the loss of loved ones and the presuit of money, people that have been hurt by thing i have done , there is no going back when they are all gone , and its all memories
Your not alone Maddy, this version brings tears to my eyes every time I hear it. And many others as well. Nothing more beautiful than music that can move you like this.
One of the few songs that truly just hit you in the feels, that as you grow older, the meaning of lyrics are more heartfelt. So glad Johnny took a chance to do this. Coupled with his baritone are the lyrically relevant story of his life…that I believe, is the key to how this differs from the NIN version.
Ive battled depression for near on 25 years now, this is my go to song if I feel clogged up and need to vent/let out some emotions ... It is insane how one can get ADDICTED to being in pain... It was / is the only constant in my life, so it feels safer than a lot of other options... Such a beautiful song.
I'll never forget the first time I arrived in Nashville for a two day job from Seattle. A building had a full sized painting on the side wall of Johnny Cash. I wasn't a country fan at the time but that painting said all I need to know about that town. The visit truly changed my perspective on a lot of things.
The guy who wrote this song, Trent Reznor (Nine Inch Nails) Said that this became Johnny's song. It just fit him so well, and he did such a impactful version.
I just watched a bunch of reactions to this song for the first time, as it is becoming more relevant to me, and due to the fact that I am a glutton for punishment. You encapsulated this song best with 'he created the embodiment of regret within a song'.
Johnny Cash struggled w/ drug addiction and alcoholism for decades... so, he related to the song 'Hurt' by Nine Inch Nails (released in 1994) by Trent Reznor, who was struggling w/ alcoholism and addiction when he wrote the song. In any case, Johnny Cash had recorded a number of cover songs since he started in the 1950's... 'Hurt' was a cover that BECAME his song. In 2002, Johnny Cash was in failing health and kept recording songs in his studio - he had signed w/ Rick Rubin's American Recordings label in the 90's and despite being unable to tour since 1989, he found a new younger audience buying his records... He finished the 'American IV: The man comes around' album in '02 and knowing that he was dying... he filmed the music video for 'Hurt' w/ his wife June Carter as a way of saying 'goodbye' and giving a glimpse of his career and what happens to 'legends' when they are past their prime... forgotten and left behind for the most part. 'Hurt' became a huge single in 2003 and gave Johnny Cash one last taste of massive success and critical acclaim ... Sadly, his wife June Carter passed away from her own health complications in May of '03... a heartbroken Johnny Cash quietly said in an interview that he would pass away soon... Johnny Cash died in Sept. '03 at age 71... just months after June Carter. Rick Rubin oversaw the release of Johnny Cash's final recordings - 'American V: A hundred highways' in 2006... and "American VI: Ain't no grave" in 2010.
Watching him run his hands across the piano one last time...the end of an era 😔 Never take for granted the blessings you have before you. I would give anything to here the likes of Johnny Cash! RIP Mr Cash...
Love ya Maddy you get it! I'm 64yrs old and lived the original version of this song as a young man and now as an old man I get to live this remake. I rarely make it thru the first minute without bawling my eyes out, it's horribly beautiful on many levels for me personally.
@@MaddyReactions There's one lyric early on that tells you he didn't write it. "The needle tears a hole." Trent Reznor was a heroin addict, Johnny Cash wasn't.
the sad thing is I've seen people react to this song over a hundred times but I've never seen anyone ever react to any other Johnny Cash songs and he was the King of Country.
Modern society machine tricks many people into taking simple blessings and virtues for granted. Even forsaking family, friends and unconditional love outright in pursuit of hollow status and fleeting spectacles. Johnny Cash"s regret can be our reminder. Beautiful and genuine reaction Ms. Maddy.
The last song he did before his death. It has so much meaning. He was not a pious man, but he believed. Just like me, he was a good man, but not perfect.
Of all the reviews I've seen of this masterpiece, no one has not been affected by it. I'm 74, and know so many of Johnny's songs, but this is the top. And I still get teary over it because of knowing his life and struggles over the decades. Great review and commentary, Maddy.
Rick Rubin is a legendary music producer that sort of reignited Johnny Cash's career by pretty much allowing him to just do whatever he wanted. They collaborated on a number of albums late in Johnny's career. Rick Beato is another producer who has a popular youtube channel and he interviewed Rick and talked about some of the stuff with Johnny and went over how this song came to be. A very cool story. It starts here: ruclips.net/video/qkwISstQQVw/видео.htmlsi=hgDHiP_QLpwILYcF&t=6343
Embodiment of regret. That is such a perfect way to sum the song up. Johnny Cash’s music was a constant presence in my childhood. I knew his life was marred and conflicted but this song really shows how difficult it was.
this was his last big song before he passed, Trent Reznor of nine inch nails wrote the song originally,..Johnny was basically saying his final good bye b/c he knew his time was very limited and he was saying he has lots of regrets in the decisions he made in his past and if he could come back he would do things differently..Johnny wasn't always a good guy, he was a full on drug addict and made some really bad marital choices but all was forgiven

MADDY, wonderful reaction intense and real. You are a very beautiful and caring lady. Love you and your reactions.
Thank you!! 😊
One of the best songs/music videos, ever.
Tears are the only response to this and I pray that you are blessed and protected always.
The best art makes you feel your own humanity....this is a great example of art (and a COVER, of a NIN's song from the 90s).
Honestly, this review and your thoughts are what had me subscribe. Your humble faith humbles me.
❤️❤️❤️
JOHNNY ALWAYS GAVE US HIS THOUGHTS AND HEART
Hugs ❤️
He didn't write this. These are Trent Reznors thoughts...Nine Inch Nails
The guy who wrote this song, Trent Reznor (Nine Inch Nails) Said that this became Johnny's song. It just fit him so well, and he did such a impactful version.
Wow!
'Live at Reading ' is a really good version too:) NIN do it
I know the song. The guitar starts out and already there are tears in my eyes. Enjoy...and learn. He sings not with depression. He sings of regret.
I just watched a bunch of reactions to this song for the first time, as it is becoming more relevant to me, and due to the fact that I am a glutton for punishment. You encapsulated this song best with 'he created the embodiment of regret within a song'.
*This song always reminds me of my Pops! Rest well old man!!*
This was your BEST monologue of ALL your reactions. A hug from Amsterdam.

Watching him run his hands across the piano one last time...the end of an era 😔
Never take for granted the blessings you have before you. I would give anything to here the likes of Johnny Cash! RIP Mr Cash...
Deeper and deeper. Way to go! Genuine.
Gets me every time. The Man in Black!❤
Love ya Maddy you get it! I'm 64yrs old and lived the original version of this song as a young man and now as an old man I get to live this remake. I rarely make it thru the first minute without bawling my eyes out, it's horribly beautiful on many levels for me personally.
Such an amazing interpretation of Trent’s song. Made it his own. Good on Reuben to coax him to record it. Still gives me tears n chills.
Trent Reznor wrote it, but when Johnny covered it, Trent said it now belongs to Johnny.
Fact
Trent performed this so beautifully as well....why cash covered it
He never said that.
@@drakocarrion agreed, there was a lot more to it and such. But the video did move him and he admitted that.
Beautiful Song ❤ Fun Fact you might not know this is actually a Nine Inch Nails song that Johnny covered.
Wait no way?!??
@@MaddyReactions yes way
@@MaddyReactions yup check out nin version !!!
Yes and when Trent Rezar from NIN heard the song he said ...that's Jonny's song now
@@MaddyReactions There's one lyric early on that tells you he didn't write it. "The needle tears a hole." Trent Reznor was a heroin addict, Johnny Cash wasn't.
the sad thing is I've seen people react to this song over a hundred times but I've never seen anyone ever react to any other Johnny Cash songs and he was the King of Country.
A sweet and vulnerable reaction.
This one got me the best response I ever got at an open mic night...love it !
Of all the reviews I've seen of this masterpiece, no one has not been affected by it. I'm 74, and know so many of Johnny's songs, but this is the top. And I still get teary over it because of knowing his life and struggles over the decades. Great review and commentary, Maddy.
Came here because Maddy is an absolute smokeshow. Stayed for the unbelievably insightful reaction.
Wow Johnny cash amazing, it’s awesome you were able to do such iconic song ❤❤❤
Agreed!!
Thank you, Maddy. Great reaction. You nailed it!
Embodiment of regret. That is such a perfect way to sum the song up. Johnny Cash’s music was a constant presence in my childhood. I knew his life was marred and conflicted but this song really shows how difficult it was.
A real, genuine, heartfelt reaction. That was deep.

this was his last big song before he passed, Trent Reznor of nine inch nails wrote the song originally,..Johnny was basically saying his final good bye b/c he knew his time was very limited and he was saying he has lots of regrets in the decisions he made in his past and if he could come back he would do things differently..Johnny wasn't always a good guy, he was a full on drug addict and made some really bad marital choices but all was forgiven
When he closes the piano at the end, the piano stands for the coffin.
Yessss
This video is one of the most poignant and impactful videos of all time. Your reactions are sincere and genuine as well. I literally could see you changing from your usual head weaving to absorbing the message this song and video evokes. That was outstanding.
