This song was originally written & performed by "Nine Inch Nails". It was written by Trent Reznor about drugs & depression. Trent said, " it’s his song now". But Johnny Cash's version was considered the best version. Johnny used this song about regret for past mistakes in life and material things & fame meaning nothing in the end. When the video was filmed in February 2003, Cash was 71 years old & had serious health problems. His frailty is clearly evident in the video. He died seven months later, on September 12 & his wife, June Carter Cash, who is shown gazing at her husband in two sequences of the video, had died on May 15 of the same year.
June wasn't supposed to be in the video she came downstairs during filming and as we all seen was extremely emotional watching Jonny. One of his daughters commented to him, dad it sounds like your saying goodbye! Jonny said I am. A couple of months later June died and Jonny followed soon after!
The song is from Trent Reznor. Here is a quote from him after it was released "I never got to meet Johnny but I’m happy I contributed the way I did. It felt like a warm hug. I have goosebumps right now thinking about it. Having Johnny Cash, one of the greatest singer-songwriters of all time, want to cover your song, that’s something that matters to me. It’s not so much what other people think but the fact that this guy felt that it was worthy of interpreting.”
The visuals in the video make it hit even harder. Seeing the picture of his mother, seeing his wife June standing on the stairs. In particular, for me, seeing him jump on the train when he was footloose and fancy-free. Then the dove flying and the piano closing at the end. Get's me every time. A masterpiece.
Oh my goodness! You ladies look so much alike it is amazing. I have some uncles and siblings that look like my great-great grandfather, but you girls take the cake. Three generations of beautiful. Rock on!
There is so much poignancy in the song and video, but for me the way he closes and caresses the piano lid at the end of the video is very powerful. Like a wistful but loving goodbye.
It's quite the message, isn't it? Johnny Cash had pretty much seen everything and done everything. He either already had or could have anything material in this world he wanted. But as he felt the end approaching, he counted it all as an "empire of dirt" and had the same pain and regrets at the end of life as the rest of us.
Yes..i remember Johnny's tv show, it would start out (intro) with Johnny with his back to the camera and he would swing around and say Hello... I'm Johnny Cash! ...it was a entertaining show!
Many country music stars had their own television show, including Johnny Cash, Buck Owens, Bill Anderson…my favorite is The Porter Wagoner Show Where a new artist was a frequent guest..Dolly Parton, where she wrote one of her biggest songs.. Will Always Love You
What I love is there is three generations of you ladies sitting there, and the young one in the middle, knowing all the music that you were talking about from Johnny Cash just makes me very happy that the younger generation has such great knowledge of our generations music thank you three ladies for your reactions
what a great song, so powerful and emotional amd was a song me.andy best friend used to sing. He passed away 15 years ago so this song always brings the hurt 😢
Trent Reznor wrote this song after his break up with fellow musician Tori Amos, yes about his drug addiction and depression!!!!!! And he did say after he heard Johnnys version that the song was his!!!!
8:00/Lulu, baby girl...your way too Yung to understand this song!! But your mother & grandmother are old enough to understand the meaning behind this song!! ❤ ❤
Johnny did have his own music variety show, “The Johnny Cash Show”. I used to catch reruns of it late at night. He had artists like Roy Orbison and Stevie Wonder as guests. He would also perform solo numbers such as “The Junkie’s Prayer”. It was a great show.
He wrote a lot of them, but not all. Ring of Fire is by June Carter Sunday Morning Coming Down is by Kris Kristofferson A Boy Named Sue is by Shel Silverstein
I love how the 3rd gen kid in the middle keeps bopping from side to side even when her mum pauses the song, she's still completely following the conversation but just bops away and only jumps in to the conversation when it's time to be witty 🤣 Typical teenager really.
This is One of my Favorite Artists and At My Age of 76 + it really hits Home And I Also like Home Free versions of Johnny Cash Which is also Brilliant. Chris Tredwell Birmingham UK
Walk the line I still feel like is a work that should be taught in school. The hmmmms alone. Jonny Cash is a treasure. This song was done within months of June and Johnny's deaths
Este velho aqui não consegue ouvir essa versão sem sentir a dor que Johnny Cash demonstra no clipe! Meus olhos " vazam" ! É lindo e triste ao mesmo tempo! ☺️👍⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐🇧🇷
You guys should watch the movie about his life its called "Walk the Line" it's really good Juaquin Phoenix plays johhny Cash and Reese Witherspoon plays june Carter
Jonny cash wrote over 80 of his own songs not including some he co wrote with his wife and other artists , this one is not his song but a group called nine inch nails and there lead singer wrote this song about drugs , Cash made it about his life and things that he did wrong , his wife who is seen in this video died only a few months after the video and he passed a few months later , it was his last ever song .
As you can see user-bobcrosier has once again copied & pasted my comments that I have used for over 2 years. RUclips does not allow Plagiarism. Sad that people do that. The only song that June wrote was Ring of Fire. It is a love song. Johnny did write most of his own songs, but several of his "hits" were covers. "Ghost Rider's in the Sky" was one of the covers.
It sounds like the song was originally written about drug use but translates to one generation saying good bye to the next. My daughter is my sweetest friend. Enjoy life baby girl
Trent Reznor wrote it, but I think without knowing it, he wrote it for Johnny, because the way they brought the hole Johnny Cash history into this, it fit perfectly, even though the song was about drug abuse. The video was perfect, and the fact that Johnny was at end of life, even if we didn't know it, fit perfectly into the message. What an icon!
He wrote Mean Eyed Cat and that would be worth checking out. He added another verse when he re-released it on American Records. A nice reaction to a moving song.
Very poignant song. Was a fav singer songwriter of mine since the 60's. He didn't write this one but sure as hell did it justice. RIP. Pretty sure this was John's last song!
June died 3 months after this video , Johnny died 7 months after june . Trent Reznor wrote this song and when he heard this version he said its Johnnys song now
You all should check out Ren… Hi Ren, Money Game part 1 & 2, Sick Boi, Animal Flow, Murderer, Bind Eyed… He is what would happen if Eminem and Bob Marley merged together into one British dude.
Tre women, everybody is shocked, i see. ...for different reasons. The young woman understood something just happened, but is not able to understand all, of course, she is so young and so full of hope and new live... but she moves her head, and, sometime that moving becomes strange, hard, quick, she doe's not realize all, but something, something! ...her mom is afraid for her daughter, for the strong deep under the words that her daughter is listening...and all the mean of that terrible beautiful reality song. The mom of the mom, the older woman, is so sweet, the strongest of the tre, she knows all that the song mean and she feel exactly all. If you stop the movie at 12:15, you can see and understand that all i just said (over my bad writing, cause i'm french and just learned 2 years English ) I'm right. A kiss for all you tre, gentle women!
If you want to see some of the most impressive singing please watch LUCY & MARTHA THOMAS - The Prayer then listen to Lucy sing HALLELUJAH then hear her cover Evergreen you will not regret it Enjoy

One of his kids ask her dad, "are you saying goodbye in this song?" Johnny replied, "yes"
Wrong his the one that made the song
@luiscontreras5206 ? No he's not
Trent Reznor says he "dismissed" Johnny Cash's cover of Hurt the first time he heard it@@luiscontreras5206

Johnnys daughter upon hearing this "dad its like your saying goodbye?" Cash: "i am"

This is one of the most heart wrenching videos I’ve ever seen. Gets me every time!!
Oh my goodness! You ladies look so much alike it is amazing. I have some uncles and siblings that look like my great-great grandfather, but you girls take the cake. Three generations of beautiful. Rock on!
Wow, thank you!
Trent Reznor wrote the song from 9 inch nails. Industrial rock song about heroin addiction, He said afterwards that Johnny owned his song.
There is so much poignancy in the song and video, but for me the way he closes and caresses the piano lid at the end of the video is very powerful. Like a wistful but loving goodbye.
I might be wrong, but I heard that this video was the last time he played that piano.
I love Johnny Cash. It´s so nice hearing you talk about him
That was June in the video , she passed with in months after this video. He passed a couple a months after her .
Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails wrote this track. But when Johnny covered it he said that's Johnny's tune now not mine.
Sunday morning coming down helped get me sober.
I love Johnny Cash

Beautiful haunting pure Johnny Cash
You mean pure "Nine inch nails" it's their song!
Come On from Oktaf Kanis should be the next reaction 😊🙌🏻
Yes..i remember Johnny's tv show, it would start out (intro) with Johnny with his back to the camera and he would swing around and say Hello... I'm Johnny Cash! ...it was a entertaining show!
Hey … this was pretty damn cool ! Loved it ladies thanks for the video you all remind me of my own people lol . Stay blessed
Thanks
@@KathyLuluandDonna you’re very welcome
My own personal view. Is that this is one of the greatest ever covers.
Many country music stars had their own television show, including Johnny Cash, Buck Owens, Bill Anderson…my favorite is The Porter Wagoner Show
Where a new artist was a frequent guest..Dolly Parton, where she wrote one of her biggest songs.. Will Always Love You
You're correct, he had a variety show in 1970 and I have all the episodes
What I love is there is three generations of you ladies sitting there, and the young one in the middle, knowing all the music that you were talking about from Johnny Cash just makes me very happy that the younger generation has such great knowledge of our generations music thank you three ladies for your reactions

A fantastic cover! As mentioned by others, he made this his song. RIP.
June Carter passed away in May of 2003 and he passed away September, 2003.

R.I.P. Johnny and June 🙏😢

My parents had the opportunity to meet Johnny Cash when he was just coming out, I think they said it was around Minneapolis in the late 1950’s
This is One of my Favorite Artists and At My Age of 76 + it really hits Home
And I Also like Home Free versions of Johnny Cash Which is also Brilliant.
Chris Tredwell Birmingham UK
Donna coming in STRONG with all the facts. She sure knows her stuff!
first reaction (out of over 100) where there was almost no emotions expressed.
Loved the wisdom, ladies.
Nana has it right. He had a summer replacement variety show I believe.
Walk the line I still feel like is a work that should be taught in school. The hmmmms alone. Jonny Cash is a treasure. This song was done within months of June and Johnny's deaths

When he says " everyone i know goes aways in the end"
Man in Black is one of my favorites. It explains why he always wore black. It reveals Johnny's social conscience.
That first picture was of Momma Cash
You guys should watch the movie about his life its called "Walk the Line" it's really good Juaquin Phoenix plays johhny Cash and Reese Witherspoon plays june Carter

Thanks

The most impactful music video I have ever experienced..
Real Americans!
Very poignant song. Was a fav singer songwriter of mine since the 60's. He didn't write this one but sure as hell did it justice. RIP. Pretty sure this was John's last song!
The lady in the picture was his mother in law. They were really close.
June died 3 months after this video , Johnny died 7 months after june . Trent Reznor wrote this song and when he heard this version he said its Johnnys song now
Of course he wrote "Folsom Prison Blues" and "Man In Black" and "I Walk the Line", but not "A Boy named Sue", which surprised me.
This is a cover song! The original is" Nine inch Nails"
You all should check out Ren… Hi Ren, Money Game part 1 & 2, Sick Boi, Animal Flow, Murderer, Bind Eyed… He is what would happen if Eminem and Bob Marley merged together into one British dude.
love that the younger one is grooving to it.
Johnny Cash couldn’t live without June Carter. Some say Johnny Cash died of a broken heart.
Really tongue tied at the moment. What a great memory. 9 inch nails just didn't know.
This old vet can feel the hurt.
There was alot of variety shows Johnny Cash, Glenn Campbell, Sonny and Cher to name a few.

The picture was his mother and the lady standing on the staircase. What is his wife looking down on him?
Have a listen to Johnny Cash singing “Man in White”.
My favorite song from him is ghost riders in the sky
Redemption day
Cantata da Johnny Cash
the last one recorded died i think six months later
Ah, to be young
These 2 are generally normal, especially the one in the middle?
You seem curiously devoid of emotion to this heartbreaking performance. Most cry at this.
Good job all those late night tv shows werent on that Jimmy Saville level oh wait deep country us 😂
You all want to listen to a great story song by Johnny cash the song Chattanooga city limit sign. You will love it in get laugh out of it.
Ein so geiler Song und die behämmerte in der Mitte wackelt mit dem Kopf
It was a nine inch nails song
Family tree has one branch.
Mics a little hot in the beginning, but love the genuine enthusiasm and sincerity. :)
Sorry about that. We are trying to get it worked out. Thanks for watching.
If you want to see some of the most impressive singing please watch LUCY & MARTHA THOMAS - The Prayer then listen to Lucy sing HALLELUJAH then hear her cover Evergreen you will not regret it Enjoy

Not really a song for head banging
