My 89 year old grandmother asked for a priest so she could get her last rights. The local catholic parish didn't have anyone to spare so they sent a cardinal to give her her last rights at 7pm on a Sunday in July. She didn't get up for breakfast... some people just know when they have completed their journey on this plane, and in that moment they are the lucky ones as they have that sense of finality to their journey. My uncle was present at the event and says to this day that she was never more calm or peaceful that he can remember than she was that night
Johnny Cash wrote songs and made money, and his work often played on emotions to connect with listeners.This song and video were clearly crafted to tug at heartstrings,he was overacted and making the effort to produce a commercial product. The song is as much a tribute to his ego as it is to commercialism. It’s well-designed to deliver a gut-punch of emotion, and the fact that we invest in it emotionally is exactly what the hook is meant to do.
Those at the top, like Cash, know how to manipulate our need for meaning and connection. This human tendency, which likely helped us in our evolutionary past, can easily be exploited for profit.
Men seem to cry more than women to this song. Very powerful.
Generally,when you see men crying they have been taking SSRI’s . No statistical analysis.but this has been observation as a 62 year old.I have been on Selective serotonin Re-uptake inhibitors For 28 years. A relief mechanism activates allowing an emotional release and reset much like an estrogen rich person. I haven’t noticed crying in my trans girlfriends however they seem remarkably poised despite society’ pressure on them for binary representation closer to gender/sex AMAB.
Originally done by Nine Inch Nails and written by Trent Reznor, this was a metal groove. Cash adopted it and made it very sad and somber and killed it! His wife (in the video) died very shortly after this. He passed not long after, and it seems he knew he would. Reznor has since said that the song belongs to Johnny now.
A friend of mine, a cast member from Hee Haw, asked him at June's funeral how he was doing and he said, "Honey, I'll be dead in six months." He made it to four. 😞
Reznor wasn't too impressed until he saw the music video, and then said it was Cash's from that point on.
The look on June's face as she watches him..... gets me every time.
Yeah, it's amazing how just the tone of his voice changes the entire meaning of the song.
Originally about drug addiction... "The needle tears a hole, the old, familiar sting". A song about drugs slowly taking a life, long before it's time. But in Cash's version, you assume it's medication, and the tragedy of the needle keeping someone alive beyond their time. A complete reversal of the meaning without changing any lyrics. There aren't many artists who can do that.
I wouldn't necessarily call the original a "metal groove". It' was definitely also sad and somber

YES, this hit us, the fans, VERY hard the 1st time we saw it. We all knew he was telling us "goodbye". If you're wondering, the picture hanging on the wall is Johnny's mother. When his wife June died, many think Johnny died not long after from a broken heart. He missed June so much.

He defined his life as before June and after June. She saved his life, and he knew it.
One of the saddest images is the shattered Columbia framed album. Johnny put Columbia on the map and made them millions. They dropped them without notice in the 80's and Johnny never forgave them for it. Thank God for Rick Rubin, genius, who knew what Cash could bring to the table and was still powerful and relevant as an artist. Plus Johnny's FU attitude was perfect for Rubin's label American Recordings
This was Johnny's goodbye and he admitted thst before he passed. Trent who wrote it said this song belonged to Johnny now. Trents version was about addiction and was excellent. But this version is superior because it strikes a chord with everyone. Not every person deals with addiction, but everyone will have to deal with the end of life and facing their life choices and regrets. We do lose everyone, we all will because that final journey we have to take alone. The final line is the most emotional I think. If he could go back and keep himself. Thats the biggest lesson. To achieve fame Johnny had to lose himself and become what the label and his fans wanted. This lead to addictions, crime, driving people away.... so don't burn your bridges and keep those you love and treasure then, keep true to yourself, because life is short and all the fame and money won't save you. The only thing you have is your heart, soul integrity. Don't give thst up.

"Having Johnny Cash, one of the greatest singer-songwriters of all time, want to cover your song, that's something that matters to me. @@Gutslinger to be honest I have no idea. I know supposedly he was supposed to have told his daughter that. There was an interview after his death and she said when she first heard the song when he first showed it to her she had a really hard time with it because it was so clearly a goodbye. His health was really bad at that point, he was mostly blind and in a wheelchair. Her mother June would have died very shortly after the release of the song and of course Johnny himself within months of her death. Also reportedly when the scene was at the end when he closed the piano that was the last time he ever played the piano, and if you notice when he closed it it seems like a very conscious thing that he did. Either which way we all know it was his goodbye.

I think we can all connect to this song because we’ve all dealt with pain and hurt and lost in fear in our lives and you get to the point where Johnny was and you realize none of that stuff that you spent your life doing really matters none of the awards or gold records helps you feel better when you’ve lost all your loved ones and you’re sick yourself. The only thing that is important at that point is your relationship with God your friends and your family the rest of it is just an empire of dirt. Ashes to ashes dust to dust. RIP Johnny Cash
Speaking as an old man in the winter of my life I can say Johnny sings the common song for us all. as we get closer to the horizon of our lives we can look back and see the times we chased after selfish dreams and fought old dragons at the expense of the goodness in other's lives, as well as our own. So many of the things we were proud of when young, now fill us with deep pain and regret. It is a song of warning to all the young to get your priorities straight early in life. Johnny Cash was his friend and now Lisa Marie is gone too. June Carter had a beautiful long black hair. Down to her knees. And had a playful way of singing with Johnny. She had some type of harp that you would play. It would sit on her lap or she would play it by her heart. She watched over him as long as she could. And you could see the distress 9:56 on her face as she looked over him. Because physically she would not be able to look after him anymore😢

Until Dolly Parton was inducted, he was the only singer in both the Country Music and Rock and Roll Hall of Fames.

Great reaction! Your tears show your humanity. JC struggled with addiction throughout his life. I think a lot of those struggles were because of his brother dying in an accident while working. JC blamed himself for his brothers death. His wife, June Carter Cash is the woman on the stairs watching him record this song. She passed away May 15, 2003, Johnny passed away Sept. 12 2003. JC did a few concerts for prisons that were put on vinyl. Iconic stuff back in the day. He did spend some time in prison himself.

Johnny's daughter Roseanne asked him not to record it. She said Dad it sounds like you're saying goodbye. Johnny said, I am. I knew he was the 1st time I saw it.I sat there sobbing. I didn't know him personally but he has been there my whole life. I didn't want to say goodbye 😢

Same here, Carol. I've been a fan off and on of Johnny, but never lost track of his music. This is about the 10th review I've watched, and I still get weepy, even at 72. Maybe because I'm in "the Autumn Of My Life" that it hits me much harder.

Great reaction. For me, this song really hits home. I'm 72, and I can completely relate to regrets that pile up as I grow older. And there's a deep meaning to the end of the song. For me (that's the only person I can speak for, obviously) when he says, "I will keep myself, I would find a way.", it means even if I could go back and do it all over again, I'd be much the same person I was before. I'd keep myself. I'd, somehow, find a way to keep from changing very much. Like I said, it hits me hard. Thanks for sharing with us!

This song was originally written & performed by "Nine Inch Nails". It was written about drugs & depression. But Johnny Cash's version is considered the best. His version is more about regret for past mistakes in life & realizing material things & fame mean nothing in the end. When the video was filmed in February 2003, Cash was 71 years old & had serious health problems. His frailty is clearly evident in the video. He died seven months later, on September 12 & his wife, June Carter Cash, who is shown gazing at her husband in two sequences of the video, had died on May 15 of the same year.

I have respect for Trent that i never had before, he wasn't crazy about Johnny doing this song but after he heard it he was blown away. He said i was born to write it Johnny was born to sing it. He on went to say this song isn't mine anymore. Johnny knew he was dying this was his goodbye when he closed the lid on the piano it was symbolic of closing his casket lid.. I heard this for the first time at a casino believe it or not. At the hard rock in MS. The video was playing on all the big screens and almost everyone on the Casino got quiet and was just captivated listening and staring up at the video. It was a crazy experience

Johnny was in awe of Trents lyrics for such a young man to come up with. Trents version relates to a man falling apart mentally as the album it comes from is basically about the demise of a man culminating in his suicide. Johnny i feel makes it about an old man's regret of his life choices as he nears his natural end

Johnny Cash spent his entire musical career pouring every ounce of emotion into his craft. his life was anything but easy, and the loss, and pain, and his own failings when it came to his family weighed heavily on him. this song was written by Trent Reznor of Nine inch Nails, and from the perspective of a young man that has ruined their future, but Johnny made it his own as a man reflecting on his long life nearing it's end. There is a reason he will never fall out of the heart and soul of Country music. thank you for being respectful of him in your discussion .

Johnny made this song his own. Every driven man has made sacrifices to achieve lofty goals. This song is a song of regret about not focusing more on the things that truly matter at the end. Johnny struggled with drug addiction at different points in his life. Looking at the photo of his mother on the wall and seeing his wife June so prominent in the imagery of the video, gives me the impression that he had regrets there as well. When we come to the end and can look back, we can all see the pain we inflict on others with our actions. The lost time and opportunities to spend precious time with those that matter. This is a masterful warning from a voice of experience that building an empire at the cost of hurting others is a fools errand.

I'm so glad that I had the opportunity to see him live in concert in Tulsa back in 1970. Having said that, this song is sooo amazing in regards to his life.

Johnny's brother died a terrible death when they were kids and I dont think John ever got over it. He had alot of demons in his life that he overcame. That was June his wife, she died soon after this and he died soon after her.
