You need to finish the video. At the end, he closes the piano. It was actually the last time he played that piano. It was his way of showing he knew this was going to be his last song and video, and he had come to terms with that.
well said. One of the most poignant thing (for me) about this video is the way he lovingly strokes the piano at the end. Almost as if he is saying to it "goodbye old friend".
His oldest daughter Roseanne Cash wrote her own song about the same subject. September When It Comes is actually his very last time in the studio. Sort of a duet.
his daughter told him after hearing it, it sounds like your saying goodbye all he said to her was i am then a months later he passed after making the song
The NIN version is a young man looking up into his future and the how the mistakes are going to shape his world, Cash's version is a man at the end of his life looking back as his mistakes and seeing how it shaped him. The versions are literally book ends.
The House of Cash was a museum here in Hendersonville, TN dedicated to his music. In the later years of his life, it was closed. The place he was singing from in front of the fireplace, was the basement of his home here in Hendersonville. Barry Gibb of the Bee Gees bought the home after his death and attempted to renovate it. The renovators put while new varnish on all that wood trim and left to let it dry overnight. A spark happened somewhere and ignited the varnish fumes and the house burned down. The white house in the video is his childhood home in Arkansas.
Johnny passed away at 71. That means he's 4 years older than I am now. He had a rough life. Alot of it was his own doing but When he met June Carter, she made a huge impact on him, and he did straighten up. We all have demons to face in our life. He noticed that power and money is something you can't take with you. But he knew the value of family.
One of the best, if not the best covers of all time. He took an amazing song and made it his own and took it to another level. Fitting goodbye for a legendary man and career.
One look at his name in wikipedia, and you will start to understand " The House of Cash." He has been in the spotlight for decades along with his wife. In the end, he knew his strengths and weaknesses, and for his final act, he laid his soul out for everyone to see. The true "Man in Black". RIP.
Those who knew him said that Johnny Cash died of a broken heart as he couldn’t live without his beloved June. Most people thought Johnny would die first but June died in May of 2003 Johnny followed 4 months later. The song Far Side Banks of Jordan recorded by both Johnny and June Carter Cash is prophetic as it is haunting.
My wife and I were huge JC fans from 1975 thru his death. When we saw this video debut in 2002, we cried knowing how close he and June were. I hadn't listened to it since until this past December when a voice teacher I love happened to do it. She also cried which brought back memories of me and my now-ex wife 22 years ago. NIN original version mirrored my life when it came out for same reasons he wrote about and my struggle...now, clean, near 30+ years later, JC version mirrors my life in my later life. It truly does have 2 different meanings depending on your age imo. Great reaction.
Well now you go and check out more Johnny Cash! Ring of Fire and Boy Named Sue are good ones to start with. Johnny Cash hit the music scene in the 1950's and toured with some of the biggest names in music history. He was singing and creating right up until he passed away. The woman watching from the stairs was his wife, June Carter Cash. She passed away about three month before he did.
Johnny knew the end was near, he chose this song to say goodbye and also to tell us , in the end ,things don’t matter, only Relationships with people and with Jesus ( you see flashes of that, in the video) Cash’s songs When the Man comes to town and Gods Gonna Cut You Down. Cash knew of God’s wrath , but also, the mercy and Amazing Love ❤️ God ,offers to those who humble themselves and choose Him. Thank you for the video 😊
He was a very famous musician in his time. The house of cash was a museum dedicated to him as an artist that eventually went out of business. The point of showing it I think is as an appeal to the themes of futility and human fragility in the context of contemplating mortality and the meaning of life.
Johnny Cash and June Carter both knew they did not have much time left when they did this. While the song was about past regrets it was really about their future.
Been watching y'all from just about the start and I have say I've never seen James have a reaction like that, you can tell by his face, this struck a chord with him
Definitely check out more of Johnny's music. One of my favorites that doesn't seem to get a lot of mention is "A boy named Sue". It's so fun and a great song. Thanks for sharing guys!
I live really close to the town he grew up in and I’m embarrassed to say I haven’t gone and toured his boyhood home. I need to make it a point to get there and see it.
My Aunt used to live a few houses down from Johnny Cash on Old Hickory Lake near Nashville TN. You can see the lake out of the window in a few of the shots as alot of the video was filmed in his home. Its such a beautiful place.
You cut it off too soon, as jgmartin307 commented. You missed a parting shot of him closing the piano which is actually quite impactful. As jgmartin mentioned, it was his last performance. Moreover though, the gesture he makes with his hands as he closes the piano speaks of finality. At first I didn't know quite why, but then realized that I have seen people make an almost identical gesture on the coffin of a loved one. It was like he was laying everything to rest.
This song "Hurt" was written by the Band called "Nine Inch Nails" and Johnny Cash made the song famous. I believe this is Johnny Cash''s last hit song. And the woman standing in the background was Johnny Cash's wife June Carter Cash who is a Country Music Legend in her own right.
@@3DJapan Yes you are right. Thanks for explaiing. my point was just to show that the song was not Cash's but Nine Inch Nails. I had never heard the Nine Inch Nalls version.
He did so much to help those with addiction but he did it quietly, there are several interviews about it that tells his entire story and would give better insight to the things in the video
his song was originally written & performed by "Nine Inch Nails". It was written by Trent Reznor about drugs & depression. Trent said, " it’s his song now". But Johnny Cash's version was considered the best version. Johnny used this song about regret for past mistakes in life and material things & fame mean nothing in the end. When the video was filmed in February 2003, Cash was 71 years old & had serious health problems. His frailty is clearly evident in the video. He died seven months later, on September 12 & his wife, June Carter Cash, who is shown gazing at her husband in two sequences of the video, had died on May 15 of the same year.
Growing up in Old Nashville, as i mentioned on your Mama's & Pappa's California Dreaming reaction😊, me & my friends hated Country. Had a drummer whos dad was keyboard player for Ray Stevens😅 on the road. Was invited often to backstage at The Grand Ole Opry but we never went. However, EVERYONE loves Johnny! Dont trust anyone who doesn't.😅Unfortunately i never got to see him perform, but in the 70s my boy scout troup got invited to march in the Christmas Parade & Johhny was mc. Got pics in family album somewhere of Johhny sitting on back of red Cadillac convertible, dressed in black of course. RIP Johhny & June.🙏❤️❤️ I always said i couldn't imagine a world without Johnny Cash.😔 Looked & they both passed in hospital i was born in. See ya, friends. ✌️🌎❤️
This was one of Cash's last songs, it's a well known cover of the 9 Inch Nails, but considering the writer and original singer admitted it fit Cash better no one seems to hold the fact it's a cover against him. His first "hit" was in 1955, he recorded hurt in 2002, and died in 2003 at 71 years old, his wife is the picture on the wall the woman we see in person is his daughter.
nine inch nails metal band wrote this son, it was about putting his feeling good first and being selfish led to fame, lying and drugs to kill the guilt and shame. johnny also went through that exact situation in his life.
This was a great song originally sung by Nine Inch Nails, but this is the best version of it, sung by the late great Johnny Cash, not long before he died.
@@HighlanderFan-e1m Originally, Reznor was annoyed when he heard Cash covered it. It was a very personal song for him. But when he really listened to it, he realized it was mostly the same words, but an entirely different "meaning", and a meaning that far more people would be able to empathize with. It was originally about a drug addict becoming ever more alienated and alone. Cash's version sounded more like dealing with aging. Not everyone becomes a drug addict, but ideally, you should get older, lol. He did come to praise the song. But the whole "It's his song now" was more about recognizing that in the minds of audiences, that is the version they will find more relatable. And that's OK, because while it's the same song, it's also somehow a comletely different song. For what it's worth however, I do prefer David Bowie's version with Trent Reznor. That was the perfect duet. I'm biased, I grew up on Bowie (Dad wanted to name me "Ziggy" after Ziggy Stardust, lol), and I've listened to Nine Inch Nails since they released "Pretty Hate Machine". So I was hooked on the original first. Had I encounted this version first, I might feel differently, but the original is already imprinted on me, long before this was recorded, and Bowie just took it up a notch. Remember, this is FAR from the only cover Cash did. His cover of Soundgarden's "Rusty Cage" is fun. His cover of Odetta Holme's rendition of "God's gonna cut you down" is also amazing (and yes, that was a cover). Though shockingly, I think Marilyn Manson's cover of Cashes cover or Odetta's cover actually tops them all, but that's kind of the point... music is never finished, it evolves so it's message stays relevent and timeless. Cash loved doing covers from other genres. He literally saw music as a "Gift from God", meant to bring people together, and bridge gaps between cultures and generations. This was a threme throughout his entire career. Whether is was rock, pop, soul, jazz, grunge, industrial metal... he wanted to bring that to his fans, but in a way in which it woudl really be heard and felt, removed from any genre-related biases they may have. This was on Volume 4 of a series 10 years in the making, dedicated to this endevor explicitly, and there are countless singles and collaborations and B-sides on his prior work that were done for the same reason.
So powerful. He was regretting the ways he had "just enjoyed life" in his hard past, and the Christian references in the video show he knew he was one of the many reasons Jesus came to die.
Trent Reznor wrote and performed this song before, and Johnny asked if he could cover it and was given permission... Trent says it's his song now, he did it so much better than he could have...
Thank you for this video. This is my go to when I'm sad and it just puts everything in perspective. What a beautiful song ❤️. You should watch the movie of his life and you will feel this song, even more. Love you guys 💞
surpise though this song was a remake . Trent Reznor lead singer from Nine Inch Nails wrote and performed this song. Johnny wanted to do it and trent let him . Trent said Johnny rocked it !
You forgot to say: the movie is “Walk the Line.” Reese Witherspoon won the Oscar for Best Actress for her portrayal of June Carter, who became June Carter CASH. She was from a VERY famous musical family: “The Carter Family”. When she met Johnny, she had already been in an unhappy marriage (and so was he)…the attraction was there…and that’s when he wrote “Ring of Fire”. He said meeting her was like a ring of fire-he couldn’t stay away. She refused to be with him until he got off drugs…he did, they married and were happy together until she died. The baby that is shown briefly in the video is their son together…John Carter Cash. He’s a musician, as is his older sister Roseanne Cash (from a previous marriage Johnny had).
The song Ring of Fire was written by Johnny Cash’s second wife June Carter with Mele Kilgore. After June’s sister Anita had recorded Ring of Fire to minor success Johnny asked for Anita’s permission to record the song and as they say the rest is history. After the success with this song Johnny gave part of the royalties to Anita.
Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails wrote this song and recorded it with his band. When he heard that Johnny Cash had recorded it, he was upset to hear it. However, he later heard the Johnny Cash recording and loved it and publicly said "It is his song now". By the way, if you let the video play until the end, a final point would be made.
Very poor reaction. You can't stop and start this song over and over again. Or at least you need to stop it in strategic spots. After the singer finishes a thought. I think they missed a lot of the raw emotion that makes this song a classic. I had to stop before the end. This song begs to be paid attention to.
Johnny Cash’s death just four months after the passing of his wife of over 35 years, June Carter Cash, is often cited as an example of the profound impact grief can have on health. While he had preexisting health issues, including diabetes and complications from autonomic neuropathy, many who knew him believed that losing June was a devastating emotional blow that contributed significantly to his decline. Research has shown intense grief, such as that experienced after the death of a spouse, can have profound physical and emotional effects, significantly increasing the surviving partner’s risk of mortality. This phenomenon, often referred to as *_”broken heart syndrome”_* or *_”stress-induced cardiomyopathy,”_* occurs when extreme emotional stress weakens the heart. This temporary condition mimics the symptoms of a heart attack and can be caused by extreme stress, such as the loss of a loved one. While not literally _”willing”_ themselves to die, the deep emotional pain of grief can trigger physical changes in the body, especially in the heart, that might contribute to their death Research also supports that the death of a spouse significantly increases the surviving partner’s mortality risk. Although not confirmed, Johnny’s rapid decline after June’s passing is consistent with how grief can profoundly impact physical health, especially in long-term, deeply bonded couples. In fact, a research study published in 1969 found that widowers had a 40% higher mortality rate in the first six months following their spouse’s death compared to married men of the same age. (Source: pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/5769860/). Johnny and June’s relationship was not just romantic but deeply intertwined in their daily lives, careers, and spiritual journeys. After June’s passing, Johnny referred to her as his *_”greatest companion”_* and publicly expressed his immense sorrow. He even recorded songs during those last months that reflected his heartbreak, such as his famous cover of “Hurt,” which many interpret as a reflection of his emotional pain. For someone as deeply connected to their partner as Johnny was to June, the grief of her absence could have compounded his physical ailments, accelerating his decline. This is consistent with the aforementioned phenomenon known as *_”Broken Heart Syndrome”_* seen in long-term couples, where the death of one partner can lead to the other passing away soon after, possibly due to a combination of emotional devastation, stress, and physical vulnerability. Their deep emotional connection and shared life made her loss devastating for him, a sentiment he expressed in his final recordings and public statements.
Song like this you need to watch fully through without stopping every few min to comment. Also you missed a big part at the end by not watching the last bit of the video.
I'm sorry if this seems harsh, but - I've seen videos where Vimeo's damned suggestion pop-ups stopped a reaction a little short. But - you stopped BEFORE THEY EVEN SHOWED UP!!! WATCH VIDEOS UNTIL 0:00! AND ALSO, BREATHE OXYGEN, NOT THE VACUUM OF SPACE!
I don't understand why people stop a video to make meaningless statements. Do you go to a concert and ask the band to stop playing while you ask why the drummer is wearing a hat? FFS. 🤬
You guys definitely are more busy / tired young parents than you used to be. That’s not an insult but raising a baby takes a toll, keep prioritizing family & rest & RUclips last & I appreciate the content
"Ring of Fire" is a good Johnny Cash song but, if you want to check out a fun one from him as well, I'd love to see you react to his performance of "A Boy Named Sue" live at San Quentin in 1969. Especially as young parents, I think you'll enjoy the story of it.
The very first time I heard this and saw this video was literally moments after his passing. I remember feeling like this was a final message coming from beyond the grave. If you're checking out other Cash songs then be sure to listen to Big River and Get Rhythm which are two of my favourites.
This song was a song made by the group ... Nine inch nails ..... Cash made it his own with this rendition made more important because it was his last song and video and his wife seen in this video died not long after this , Cash himself died just three months later .
The Johnny Cash album Forever Words was created after his passing, performed by other artists creating songs based on his unused lyrics, letters, and poems. Chris Cornell recorded the amazing song You Never Knew My Mind and he also passed before that album was released. ruclips.net/video/h06uzVCFsoE/видео.html
"Sunday Morning Coming Down" performed by Johnny Cash and written by Kris's Kristofferson. React to the full length version by Cash first but here is a shortened TV version from 1978 where they perform it together. ruclips.net/video/IRU9i9egr7A/видео.html
@The_Beesleys_Music Not a fan of country music, yet a fan of Johnny Cash. His lyrics, especially in 'Hurt', resonate in my brain, mind, and heart. Thank you for this 🙂
That house was most definitely NOT where he grew up. He was a sharecropper's son. And worth understnding why he was "the man in black." He stood against injustice. I'd love to see you do a bit of research into the artists you're reacting to.
DRUGS !! HEROIN He actually served time in Prison is my understanding/// Folsom prison he actually had a concord in Folsom after he got out & became famous
He's saying he ruined the lives of all the people he loved, and now he's about to die, he did more harm than good in his life, and he is ashamed. All his accomplishments were nothing more than dirt, and all he should be remembered for is the hurt he left in his wake. It is a song of intense, all-encompassing regret of a life wasted. I see it as a warning. Don't be like me. It is just a song, and a cover at that, so I think it's a mistake to read too much into it. But I think this song is proof that Johnny Cash died with a lot of regret weighing on his soul.
You need to finish the video. At the end, he closes the piano. It was actually the last time he played that piano. It was his way of showing he knew this was going to be his last song and video, and he had come to terms with that.

The movie has Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon. It's based on his true life story and beautiful ❤️
Such a good movie. Reese and Joaquin nailed it!
You guys need to react differently....one stop and then discuss....plus you didn't wait until the WHOLE VIDEO was over!
Why did you stop it before the ending?????????????????????????????
Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails wrote this song and recorded it with his band. When he heard that Johnny Cash had recorded it, he was upset to hear it. However, he later heard the Johnny Cash recording and loved it and publicly said "It is his song now". By the way, if you let the video play until the end, a final point would be made.
Such a good song
Very poor reaction. You can't stop and start this song over and over again. Or at least you need to stop it in strategic spots. After the singer finishes a thought. I think they missed a lot of the raw emotion that makes this song a classic. I had to stop before the end. This song begs to be paid attention to.
not soon after this video he died rip Johnny cash 😭🙏
YES in the future guys please don’t pause so often! You do not get the real emotion of the video, play the entire video then react! TY
I think they have to sop or utube dings them..
@ yes I don’t understand I watch one daily that plays the entire video then comments without repercussions.
Why did you stop the video before the end? Jeez...
You stopped the video before the most poignant moment.
House of Cash is the johnny cash museum.
Check out “Sunday Morning Coming Down”
Ya'll, please stop jumping to end videos/songs before they're done. Otherwise, love it.
Johnny Cash’s death just four months after the passing of his wife of over 35 years, June Carter Cash, is often cited as an example of the profound impact grief can have on health. While he had preexisting health issues, including diabetes and complications from autonomic neuropathy, many who knew him believed that losing June was a devastating emotional blow
that contributed significantly to his decline.
While not literally _”willing”_ themselves to die, the deep emotional pain of grief can trigger physical changes in the body, especially in the heart, that might contribute to their death
Research also supports that the death of a spouse significantly increases the surviving partner’s mortality risk.
KEEP PLAYING!!!!! How did you not get THAT, if you've watched this before?!?!? I'm sorry, but - GET _COMPETENT_!!! - !!!!
You guys really need to check out the opening scene from dawn of the Dead where it played Jonny Cash "when the man comes around" chilling
I don't understand why people stop a video to make meaningless statements.
Do you go to a concert and ask the band to stop playing while you ask why the drummer is wearing a hat?
FFS. 🤬
You took the words right out of my mouth. Rambling on about unrelated matters ruins it for me.
@@Bill_Jones. this is why i just block channels like this
You guys definitely are more busy / tired young parents than you used to be. That’s not an insult but raising a baby takes a toll, keep prioritizing family & rest & RUclips last & I appreciate the content
My favourite Johnny Cash song is “Man in White”.
Written by Trent Resnor of Nine Inch Nails, and it is completely different than the original
The tiny white house, in disrepair was the house that "The Man in Black" grew up in.
I’m sorry but stopping the video so many times lessens its impact.
please let the videos run out until their end. many times there is something right at the end
Thanks!
Yes unfortunately Jonny cash learned to late that only love holds true value
"Ring of Fire" is a good Johnny Cash song but, if you want to check out a fun one from him as well, I'd love to see you react to his performance of "A Boy Named Sue" live at San Quentin in 1969. Especially as young parents, I think you'll enjoy the story of it.
Amazing singer 😊
You shoulda let the video play until the end. Glad you were introduced to this song, though!
The very first time I heard this and saw this video was literally moments after his passing. I remember feeling like this was a final message coming from beyond the grave. If you're checking out other Cash songs then be sure to listen to Big River and Get Rhythm which are two of my favourites.
You need to watch the movie Walk The Line with Reese Witherspoon and Joaquin Pheonix. It will explain it all!
"The Man In Black" aka Johnny Cash known as one of the all 😎time greats in country music😎
"Sunday Morning Coming Down" performed by Johnny Cash and written by Kris's Kristofferson. React to the full length version by Cash first but here is a shortened TV version from 1978 where they perform it together.

Only song Johnny Cash ever sang that I liked. It felt so personal even though he didn't write it. It was a remake of a Nine Inch Nails song
@The_Beesleys_Music Not a fan of country music, yet a fan of Johnny Cash. His lyrics, especially in 'Hurt', resonate in my brain, mind, and heart. Thank you for this 🙂
The "Things" in life don't matter, it's the people that matter.
You really should check out his song for Man in Black. It's also a heartfelt song.
This a cover of a Nine In Nails song.
That house was most definitely NOT where he grew up. He was a sharecropper's son. And worth understnding why he was "the man in black." He stood against injustice. I'd love to see you do a bit of research into the artists you're reacting to.
Listen to the original by 9 Inch Nails.
this is video that should be interrupted as little as possible
she passed away a few molnths after this video, he dies within the year.
He's been a major star for over 60 years
DRUGS !! HEROIN He actually served time in Prison is my understanding/// Folsom prison he actually had a concord in Folsom after he got out & became famous
The beautiful lady in the video was his wife June Carter Cash.
Johnny Cash was my papaws favorite singer. My papaw really related to him.
A Boy Named Sue is a must watch.
Must do more Cash.. This one. "Ring of fire". And "a boy named sue". You cut the clip too soon.. the closing of the piano ends the song.
Cut off the most powerful part of the video - the end of the video!
