This song was originally written & performed by "Nine Inch Nails". It was written about drugs & depression. But Johnny Cash's version is considered the best. His version is more about regret for past mistakes in life & realizing material things & fame mean nothing in the end. When the video was filmed in February 2003, Cash was 71 years old & had serious health problems. His frailty is clearly evident in the video. He died seven months later, on September 12 & his wife, June Carter Cash, who is shown gazing at her husband in two sequences of the video, had died on May 15 of the same year.
I would like to push back against this being the "best" version of the song. Both Trent's and Johnny's versions are completely different songs. Trent's was angry and about a man going through struggles. Johnny's is about a man who has come out the other side of those struggles, for better or worse, and is reviewing his life through a different lens. Saying that one is better than another does a disservice to both versions.
His daughter Roseanne Cash told him afterwards, dad this song sounds like you are saying goodbye, and he replied, I am. He was nearly blind by this point in his life and he and June passed not too long after this video was made. Johnny had been ill for a while, but June's passing was a shock and Johnny couldn't go on without his beloved June, passing within months of her.
Dude, I know men are NOT suppose to show ...... reactions of tears, but ...... THIS ...... reaction is what I felt. I love Mr Cash, his tormented life, and all his accomplishments ......but it's LIFE, many of us feel. The look on your face through this video ... says it all. You are there ..... with all of us, RIP Johnny.
Johnny Cash, legend of legends. I'm 66 years old and this man's songs have drifted in and out of my consciousness since I was a kid. The man had a presence like no other. He hosted Saturday Night Live and the show closed out with him sitting on a stool, singing "Sunday Morning Comin' Down", while the entire cast of the show, Eddie Murphy included, sat at his feet. IIRC, Eddie Murphy said he never went to the after show parties, but Johnny asked him if he was coming to the party that night. Of course, Murphy said yes.
All of those clips of a young Johnny tears at my heart. Those images bring to mind memories of my dad, who passed away in 1986 at the young age of 42. This video resonates on so many levels, it is almost impossible to not get emotional while watching.
That last shot of him closing the top of the piano and running his hands over it is so sad and beautiful. Was like him closing the book on his life and career.
It's so hard to watch this video, and yet I make myself do it every time it shows up on my feed. The hardest part for me is watching June on that staircase, looking down at her husband, feeling his his pain and despair, and knowing there is not a damned thing she can do about it. I watch because it makes me realize what is important in this life, and what is fleeting and truly of little import. Most would say that Johnny Cash's life was a life well-lived, and yet, in the end, all that was left was an empire of dirt.
This video makes me cry. I was never a Nine Inch Nails fan, I didn't realize what a good songwriter Trent Reznor is. The music for this cover is so "goosebumpy".
Yes, the cinematography as you say is out of this world. This video is the most touching I've ever seen. Because it's real life figures. Such rawness and painful yet delicate. It DOES make you reflect upon your own life...about regret and brings it home that it ALL goes away in the end and nothing really matters.
Having seen this video several times - and reactions to it - quite a few times, watching your face during this reaction was incredibly good to see! Dare I say: thank you for being moved?!!
I love this song so much. I get goosebumps EVERY time I listen to it His wife June is the woman in the video…. She passed a few months before he did. Such a moving video.
I was little, but i had the pleasure and awsome experience of seeing Johnny and June in concert at Summerfest in Milwaukee iin the early 79's, At the hsight of his powers, Johnny was a force of nature, and could command a stage like few perormers ever. He had country hits, covers, novelty songs, and songs of pain and heartbreak. This is just an amuse bouche of what he could do, and you can hear his artistry in every note, even if he couldn't get to them anymore. RIP
The song is by 9 Inch Nails! After Johnny recorded it, they said it was his and belonged to him! That was his wife June in the video. Johnny passed away shortly after she did. I really appreciate your heartfelt reaction to our "Man in Black"! You should watch the movie "Walk the Line" about his life and his love affair with June Carter Cash who in her own right was also a legend in Country music! Thank you for a beautiful reaction! Rest in Paradise June and Johnny!
There is more to the story. Trent Reznor was not happy when he found out Cash was covering the song (and changed a couple words) and wasn't totally won over when he first heard the recording, but hearing it again and seeing the video he realized what Johnny was doing and made the comment you quoted.
I don’t care if you’re a man or a woman, if you’re nineteen or ninety; if you don’t get emotional watching this music video, I truly feel sorry for you.
Another great reaction , Nick! When Johnny played this song for his daughter , Roseanne, she was very upset, and told him, "It sounds like you're saying goodbye. " And he said, "Maybe I am. "
Never heard the Nine Inch Nails version but this song hits me every time knowing this is his final video and knowing June passed soon afterwards and he following months later. "Boy Named Sue" will be played to get me out of my funk.
Bro. You're a good man. This song will tear you to pieces if you allow it. I've been through this. I beat 30 years of addiction to crack. But as soon as I got clean my daughter overdosed on heroin. Wow. Huh. Hi from Texas.
I can't imagine the pain you're in. I would give you a big hug if I could. The only thing I can tell you is that everything happens for a reason. That's what kept me sane as my husband was dying. I'm newly recovering myself from years of pain med because of spinal surgery. Take care of yourself. You're worth it.
June and Johnny were both dead a few months after making this video. He's showing regret for making mistakes and hurting loved ones. But, He had an amazing life.
Would love you to react to Johnny’s daughter Rosanne & k.d. lang singing a Loretta Lynn song You Ain’t Woman enough it is so funny the guitarist standing behind them was laughing all the way through ❤ x
Thank you for not assuming the woman in the framed picture was his wife. I thought that it is a picture of his mother but I have also heard it was his mother-in-law who was also very significant to him. I think it was his mother. But I know that it was not June (his wife). It is June on the stairs looking down.
I grew up listening to Johnny Cash my parents were country western lovers..I liked him..I think you would love Marty Robbiins he had a wonderful voice, look up El Paso he also did a great version of Summertime...check him out

He passed less than 3 months after this was recorded, of cancer than started in his throat. Puts quite a different spin on NiN's original, huh. Trent said the song now belongs to him...
Johnny Cash well not Johnny like Johnny manager or producer who was producing the album approach Trent about convering the song at first although he had respect for Johnny he said no cause of how deep the meaning is to him. It wasn’t until they sent him a copy of Johnny singing that he agreed to let him do it and once he heard it he just said it his song now.

@@lauraclark427 I get what you’re both saying but Johnny cash was incredible way way before that album ever happened. He wrote great songs of his own by the dozen. Agreed. It bums me out when people stop the video before that to me important piece. ❤️✌️
Best build to climax ever in a song in my opinion
I've seen this song over 100 times plus watched at least 30 people react to it - and each time I am bawling my eyes out before the song is over
This was his last recorded song before he passed.😢
My life is reflected by both versions, NIN in my 30s and JC now in my 60s. There is no other song I can think of that does that.

WE drove those nails into our Savior. Cash was aware of that.
His wife passed away and then he a few months later.

Check out the real Johnny cash at his best in his prime . He was a legend

My son was addicted to heroin but in the end he died by suicide. He was so hurt and broken. 😢😢
Johnny died 4 months after June’s death.
You should definitely check out the original by Nine Inch Nails
Johnnys dead my brother. He and his wife both died a few months after this video came out.
This song is everyone.
Speak for yourself!!!!!! It's NOT me. I am NOT a heroin addict, which what this song IS about.

It's NOT Cash at all. It's Trent Reznor and his heroin issues. I CANNOT connect Johnny to this as he was never a heroin addict.
No. This is nine inch nails. Listen to a Johnny Cash song if you’d like to hear a Johnny Cash song perhaps?
No, this is Johnny making the song his own, pouring his heart and soul into it. Trent Reznor even said it was Johnny's song now..
"That song isn't mine anymore," said Reznor.
