I hear you, Karen! I've gone through the hard times for at least 8 years now (I had to watch every member of my family die and was holding them in my arms as they died). My brother died first of cancer, then my father died in my arms in 2013. My mother developed Alzheimer's and I became her caregiver until she died in 2019. I'm now alone with nothing left except for my dear friends that I've had the honor of having as friends all of my life...but now they're all dying around me. Some have died from heart attacks, others of cancer, several recently of suicides, and about 3 weeks ago I learned that my best friend in the world (a brother for all intents and purposes a brother, to the point that he raised his kids to call me "Uncle") has stomach, liver cancer, and it's spreading now into his lymph nodes, etc., with a prognosis of only 3% chance of surviving it. He's asked me to come visit him soon because it'll be his last chance to see me. I'm going to go see him and say "goodbye"....life is hard. This song has become my theme song. Especially "everyone I know, goes away in the end....".

The lady in red in the picture is his mom. The lady on the stairs is June, his wife. She died 3 months after this video was made, and 4 months later, Johnny joined her in the endless sleep.
Material things. We collect them as we go through life, but at the final reckoning, they are as nothing, indeed, dirt or dust. Treasure those you love. Tell them you love them. While you still can.

A lot of people actually miss the meaning behind this song... it's about a person admitting they have not always been a good person and regrets all the hurt they have caused. It's about being honest and owning up to your mistakes. I actually loved this song when it was originally released by Nine Inch Nails and played it repeatedly, but when Johnny Cash covered it years later it seemed a perfect fit for the man in black somehow... he did a brilliant job of it.

I lost my father when I was 21. 2 years later my best friend to suicide. Then another to suicide, both over stupid sh!t. Another 2 died in car accidents. My mom, my wife and then my younger sister a couple years back along with my older friends thru the years. Everytime I hear this song I break down.

When Johnny Cash was a teenager, he was supposed to go cut some firewood with a large band saw in a shack behind the family home (the little white house in the video), but he didn’t, he went somewhere else so his older brother did it. The saw snapped and sliced his abdomen open. He hung on for three days and then died. Johnny’s father, who was a preacher, never forgave him for that. In fact he told Johnny that he should have died that day. This was just the first of a long, long string of painful events in Johnny Cash’s life, events that he tried but ultimately failed to get past. “I am still right here.”

i am an old man rapidly approaching the end of my days. i deal with neuralgia and experience excruciating pain on a constant basis. so, i have stopped taking all my medications (heart, blood pressure, diabetes, etc) and i will let nature take it's course because i can't go on this way.
this song has become my proverbial swan song. i have done a lot of terrible things to good people over my lifetime. i have been to war and killed people that were just trying to live their lives as they saw fit. i wish i had never participated in that travesty. but since i don't have a time machine, i can't fix my mistakes. i wish i could, but it's not going to happen. all i can do is say that i regret my actions and i am truly, deeply sorry that i hurt so many people during my life. and i hope my daughters will understand and forgive me when they learn the whole truth about me.

An old man full of sorrow and regret, nearing the end of his life. A man who focused on material gain and fame, only to realize at the end that none of it brought him happiness and is meaningless (my empire of dirt). Who made terrible mistakes and can’t fix them. This is the kind of man I fear becoming. I don’t want to grow old and die alone with regret in my heart.

Ultimately the only hope of perfect love comes in Jesus Christ. Fortunately, Johnny Cash knew that and sang about it often. There are really no ways to talk ourselves out of pain and suffering. We live in a fallen world and that’s why Jesus said “come on to me all you who are heavy laden and I will give you rest.“

You beautiful soul, no words are necessary. Your reaction says it all. What the song brings out and means to you is real. This song is by Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails. He wrote it about his drug addition. When Cash recorded it, Trent said, "It's not my song any more. It's his." Later, he is reported to have said, "I was born to write 'Hurt' and Johnny Cash was meant to sing it."
I've been a musician 45 years and grew up with Cash's music. This song makes me cry every time. Listen to some of his older music if you haven't already. "God's gonna cut you down." BTW, his wife passed away not long after this vdeio, I believe, and he died within a year. When he recorded the video, his daughter said, "Dad, it sounds like you're saying 'Goodbye.'" He replied, "That's because I am."
Peace, my friend. We are all children of the same Creator and thanks for sharing some feelings with your new friend and brother from Texas.

@@blackeer6614 As his career was taking off in the late 1950s, Cash started drinking heavily and became addicted to amphetamines and barbiturates. For a brief time, he shared an apartment in Nashville with Waylon Jennings, who was deeply addicted to amphetamines. Cash would use the stimulants to stay awake during tours. Friends joked about his "nervousness" and erratic behavior, many ignoring the warning signs of his worsening drug addiction.
Although he was in many ways spiraling out of control, Cash could still deliver hits due to his frenetic creativity. His rendition of "Ring of Fire" was a crossover hit, reaching number one on the country charts and entering the top 20 on the pop charts. It was originally performed by June's sister, but the signature mariachi-style horn arrangement was provided by Cash.[46] He said that it had come to him in a dream. Vivian Liberto claimed a different version of the origins of "Ring of Fire". In her book, I Walked the Line: My Life with Johnny, Liberto says that Cash gave Carter half the songwriting credit for monetary reasons.[47]
In June 1965, Cash's camper caught fire during a fishing trip with his nephew Damon Fielder in Los Padres National Forest in California, triggering a forest fire that burned several hundred acres and nearly caused his death.[48][49] Cash claimed that the fire was caused by sparks from a defective exhaust system on his camper, but Fielder thinks that Cash started a fire to stay warm and in his drugged condition failed to notice the fire getting out of control.[50] When the judge asked Cash why he did it, Cash said, "I didn't do it, my truck did, and it's dead, so you can't question it."[51] The fire destroyed 508 acres (206 ha), burned the foliage off three mountains and drove off 49 of the refuge's 53 endangered California condors.[52] Cash was unrepentant and claimed, "I don't care about your damn yellow buzzards."[53] The federal government sued him and was awarded $125,172. Cash eventually settled the case and paid $82,001.[54]
Although Cash cultivated a romantic outlaw image, he never served a prison sentence. Despite landing in jail seven times for misdemeanors, he stayed only one night on each stay. On May 11, 1965, he was arrested in Starkville, Mississippi, for trespassing late at night onto private property to pick flowers. (He used this to write the song "Starkville City Jail", which he discussed on his live At San Quentin album.)[55] While on tour that year, he was arrested October 4 in El Paso, Texas, by a narcotics squad. The officers suspected he was smuggling heroin from Mexico, but found instead 688 Dexedrine capsules (amphetamines) and 475 Equanil (sedatives or tranquilizers) tablets that the singer had hidden inside his guitar case. Because the pills were prescription drugs rather than illegal narcotics, he received a suspended sentence. Cash posted a $1,500 bond and then was released until his arraignment.[56]
In this period of the mid-1960s, Cash released a number of concept albums. His Bitter Tears (1964) was devoted to spoken word and songs addressing the plight of Native Americans and mistreatment by the government. While initially reaching charts, this album met with resistance from some fans and radio stations, which rejected its controversial take on social issues. In 2011, a book was published about it, leading to a re-recording of the songs by contemporary artists and the making of a documentary film about Cash's efforts with the album. This film was aired on PBS in February and November 2016. His Sings the Ballads of the True West (1965) was an experimental double record, mixing authentic frontier songs with Cash's spoken narration.
Reaching a low with his severe drug addiction and destructive behavior, Cash was divorced from his first wife and had performances cancelled, but he continued to find success. In 1967, Cash's duet with June Carter, "Jackson", won a Grammy Award.[57]
Cash was last arrested in 1967 in Walker County, Georgia, after police found he was carrying a bag of prescription pills and was in a car accident. Cash attempted to bribe a local deputy, who turned the money down. The singer was jailed for the night in LaFayette, Georgia. Sheriff Ralph Jones released him after giving him a long talk, warning him about the danger of his behavior and wasted potential. Cash credited that experience with helping him turn around and save his life. He later returned to LaFayette to play a benefit concert; it attracted 12,000 people (the city population was less than 9,000 at the time) and raised $75,000 for the high school.[58] Reflecting on his past in a 1997 interview, Cash noted: "I was taking the pills for awhile, and then the pills started taking me."[59] June, Maybelle, and Ezra Carter moved into Cash's mansion for a month to help him get off drugs. Cash proposed onstage to June on February 22, 1968, at a concert at the London Gardens in London, Ontario, Canada. The couple married a week later (on March 1) in Franklin, Kentucky. She had agreed to marry Cash after he had "cleaned up."[60]
Cash's journey included rediscovery of his Christian faith. He took an "altar call" in Evangel Temple, a small church in the Nashville area, pastored by Reverend Jimmie Rodgers Snow, son of country music legend Hank Snow. According to Marshall Grant, though, Cash did not completely stop using amphetamines in 1968. Cash did not end all drug use until 1970, staying drug-free for a period of seven years. Grant claims that the birth of Cash's son, John Carter Cash, inspired Cash to end his dependence.[61]
Cash began using amphetamines again in 1977. By 1983, he was deeply addicted again and became a patient at the Betty Ford Clinic in Rancho Mirage for treatment. He stayed off drugs for several years, but relapsed. By 1989, he was dependent and entered Nashville's Cumberland Heights Alcohol and Drug Treatment Center. In 1992, he started care at the Loma Linda Behavioral Medicine Center in Loma Linda, California, for his final rehabilitation treatment. (Several months later, his son followed him into this facility for treatment).[62][63

Mad respect for doing this music video. Seeing ya go from so upbeat to so immensely emotionally spent by the end… it was so real.
Hurt has to be the most emotionally devastating video I have ever seen and it was so well done that Trent Reznor of NIN (who wrote and originally played this song) basically said that it was no longer his song, it was Johnny Cash’s.
I think it is one of the best pairings between lyrics, singer and music video. A man at the end of his life who sings about all his regrets and how he wishes he could go back and do it all over again… oof.
Pair that with the fact that not too long after that Cash’s wife (who is in the video) died and then months after Cash himself died really adds to the emotional weight of this vid.

I loved your reaction. I've been watching reactions to this video for the past day or two, I'm going through one of the most painful and insulting things I've ever experienced right now and I want to be with people who feel what I feel so I'm not alone. Johnny was an amazing man, with a hard hard story. He fucked things up in a million ways and hurt the people he loved, and yet was a poet about real life and the hardship of life. He was always about the downtrodden and empathized with people living ugly lives because hurting makes you compassionate. The Man in Black was one of his songs about this. A song of his I'd recommend that no one else has probably reacted to is The Ballad of Ira Hayes, it's a story about a Native American WWII hero who was treated like crap. It's not one of his best songs, but it shows the kind of man Johnny was, his way of speaking to you through his music, and his story telling style in his music. I'd love to hear your thoughts on that one. Peace

Please do not apologize for being an empathetic, caring, and compassionate person. For those of us who have gone through the trials that John had we can identify with the pain and suffering. We never get over it but we do get through it. Peace

I am you, you are me. Right down to not only do the tears flow in rivers, the more you try not to, the deeper the heaving in your chest, until the sobs become audible with that anguished yelp trying to push it all back in. I too am emotional, empathic. I cry at alot of things. I cry for a lot of things. I cry with a lot of things. But when something gets me, really gets me, its impossible for me to cry silent tears, and i hate it, especially in movies etc, the more i try and hold it in, the worse it gets. Hate of to you and your authenticity. Subscribed. X

So one of the really cool parts of this emotional song is that it was originally written by Trent Reznor who is the writer and lead singer of the band Nine Inch Nails said in an interview in 2002 that cash's "sincerity and meaning," in his song was so good that "that song (Hurt) isn't mine anymore."

Believe by Brooks and Dunn is also a great story. For me emotionally, it’s right up there with Hurt. I still get emotional from both songs. They hit a nerve with me. Peace
