Finally an objective review that actually gives the car credit for its character. I’ve had several RS Renault’s and I do enjoy the torque steer you have to fight it and it gives it good character. Great review.

Had an RS 250 and finally took the plunge on the RS 280 Cup...A low 24K miles 1 owner and it is just fantastic. Yes the the older version was so much fun but the 280/300 is stellar with a bit more of a refined cabin and I love the shape, just so strong in it's stance. The Cup chassis was a worry but it is more than fine...yes firm but no more than it should be for a hot hatch. Grips immensly, goes around the twisties with aplomb and just so much fun especially at the price you can pick one of these up for now...Sadly as the RS is not going to be made anymore, I will be keeping this one for a long, long time...Great content as always!

These repetitive adverts ARE bloody annoying !
I had a Clio RS with a DSG box previously and loved it SO much, I've now ordered one of these.
I'm disabled due to a life threatening road traffic accident, and so needed an auto box.
Having always had manual gearboxes, I thought I'd hate a DSG, but I couldn't have been more wrong. In fact, I'd go as far to say that anyone considering this car, MUST really try both transmission types prior to purchase, simply because this DSG is so good and suits the car so well, especially in view of congestion on many roads and in towns. And of course, also having the flappy paddles means you can still drive it like a manual, but with much quicker gear changes !
Discount any thoughts you might have about this car (and ignore the fun you can have with it) at your peril !

  • @ChampionHero

Excellent video - I've had my Trophy just over a month, and the steering feel in race mode is absolutely fantastic. Having come from an S2000, the steering feel in modern cars is often quite poor. Putting the car in race makes the car feel so much more planted, more squat and pointy - much like the S2000 felt. If you haven't put the 'driving dynamic' in Race mode yet in your perso setting, I'd advise you to. The difference between race and sport with this setting on is massive, let alone the other modes.
Also the ride is great. Firm, but more than comfortable. Compared to my old car, it's like I'm driving on a pillow so I personally fail to see what other reviewers complain about there.
PS: You can switch off the keyless entry in the system menu :)

We had a few of the older Megan RS cars at the last trackday I did in September - they were stripped out and really flew round the track - even with the RS3 in standard road car spec you couldn't stay with them in the bends. Made it up somewhat on the straights though. We were all being bashed by the caterhams & atoms on the twisties.

Have to say, I just did the same...Just picked up a one owner 24K miles RS 280 Cup and I am in happy land! Great fun, yes a tad firm but then that is what a hot hatch should be but the handling is on another level and I think it just looks the best of the current crop of hot hatches...and finally there are not many about so a bit unique to boot... apparantly this is the end of the RS series which is beyond sad so I will hold on to this for a long, long time and enjoy...

I test drove one of these with the EDC gearbox a couple of weeks ago. I currently own a Clio 220 Trophy anyway but wow was the RS300 impressive. Flung it down some country roads and the body control was unbelievable and the faster I went the more impressive it got. Also incredible amounts of grip and for a 1.8 felt more than powerful enough, certainly no need for any more power in my view. Sounded fantastic as well. Definitely where my 32k would go right now on a new car

Love your enthusiasm Pete ! , the RS 300 is easily the most attractive hot hatch on the market , especially in yellow it will get a lot of attention , the next best for me is the Hyundai i30 N & new Focus ST. Interesting that you like the gearbox as most reviews say it is still a bit notchy & not as slick as say a MX5 or Civic Type R. Renault have struck a great balance between the great fun but over the top & fussy boy racer styling of the Type R & the best daily driver and most sensible & predictable choice but ultimately bland & boring Golf R !.

Hi Ped, nice review. I've tested one of these recently, it drives really well and makes a fabulous noise. For those listening that don't know this car has no adaptive dampers so comfort mode changes nothing in the suspension.
One thing I didn't get time to test is the R-Link2 system, does it give traffic reports reliably? How does the satnav, apple car play/android auto work? It's rare anybody talks about this but for it to be a daily it's important, sad to say because the older RS R-Link was pants. Looking at the Renault RS owners forum there are a lot of complaints that the new system doesn't work well and Renault charge £55 per map update, four times a year!
    Driving though it's fantastic.

Good looking car Peter, the colour along with the wheels are a great combination. Interior doesn’t grab me & the seat bolsters eventual wear & tear along with having to “climb over” them to gain access would probably be a concern for me personally. My previous ownership of Renaults weren’t a good experience & would put me off buying another.
That said, it’s horses for courses and what doesn’t suit me is irrelevant.

Your grin pretty much said it all and I used to run a FiSTer so I do know how good a well sorted hatch can be..! Whilst 5 days is a long time to have a press car so you can give it a 'fun' score, can you add a 'to live with' score? The interior seems to have been where they saved the cash. The noise of the centre rest sliding back and forth was horrible and cheap. And I bet after 20k miles it will be rattling and squeaking like a cage of gerbils. Is it fair to compare ownership with the german cars? Sure it is as much fun to drive, but their build quality and touch points are on another level. Sure they cost 10k more, but you have to live with it...
