Yo no cap, I would watch a whole ass anime about this character. This is literally art and a story in one, like his expression, his _EYES_ and even the clothes, makes me want to know who he is and what world or time he is from.

if you're really disliking a drawing, just move on to a new one! since you've already recognized the mistakes you made the first time around, you can avoid them afterwards. as for hair, try to think of it as sections instead of individual strands! ;D

Really interesting stuff. I will admit when I am in Clip Studio I just wing a lot of stuff using my intuition whilst telling myself to learn the tools some time. I draw in pen/pencils on paper a lot, my colouring experience is mostly book form, reverse engineering and even miniature painting. A process I found helpful was to draw on paper, photograph it and insert that sketch as my initial sketch layer. I just find it to be... More relaxing? Easier to access. I get stressed out whenever the coloring goes the wrong way and your outlook on things helped me realize that I need to loosen up A LOT and not try to copy what other artists do that just doesn't match with my style (aka lasso tool painting 😥)
Everyone has their own method. I wouldn't say yours is the fastest, but it works for you. I love using the llaso tool, merging layers, and using clipping masks for me it makes lifeless work flow better. I will say I work from a messier sketch line create a base and then carefully line what I want to just delete the access. In procreate I find this process to be most efficient especially merging layers of the same setting(?) To make it all cleaner then just work over the line set. For more complex pieces I might duplicate a sketch layer and have it above everything on 'lighter color' and then delete that one I have my bases dealt with. Line work can be tedious but I guess in the end it depends on the style and needs of the artist ^^
i´m stucked with an illustration and watch you´re prosses really helps me to overcome that artblock and figure it out what step doing next in my own work.

But dang, it’s never as good as your stuff! Lots of work to go!!! 🤣
this was so helpful for me because the process of painting digitally does not compute in my brain, so seeing it be done in steps like this makes it seem possible. also watching how you do it made me appreciate the end piece even more, so cool to see it come to life
So, I've watched your video... About three weeks ago, not long after it was posted. And being new to digital art - with an academic background + a specialty in hm 3D objects (ceramics and other materials) - I have to relearn not only how to draw, but how to use CSP as well. Been on and off with it since November, because I like letting things stew a bit while I check tutorials to figure my own stuff out... However, I have a very specific style, anchored in the Art Nouveau/Modernismo/Jugendstil period, and your tutorial is the only one so far that really matches my current needs. I'm only commenting now, after 3 weeks, because I needed to let it cook a bit before starting applying your advices on my current piece (which is probably too complicated for a digital art beginner but hey, I'm a persistent idiot so I'll probably manage with enough patience). And damn, I've barely started but am I pleased so far! I am very specific about the textures I seek, so seeing you do the base colours with a G Pen had like "OH MY GOD YES THIS IS IT", and so far I am seriously liking how easy the whole process is. I'll see how things go with the shading, but honestly, I am really excited to see someone with a semi-realistic comics-style not unlike mine vibe-wise detail how they go about the whole process. Also yes I agree that tidying up a sketch before inking is better. Maybe because my IRL job, Fine ARt restoration, had me get the habit of valuing a clean base so the following steps can go as smoothly as possible. Anyway, crazy rambling aside, there's a question I'd like to ask, did my own research and checked the comments to no avail: but among the background musics you used, what's the title/artist for the one starting at around 3:30? If you remember, of course. I really like it, it's very relaxing and I wish to use it as BGM to work.
Glad I’m not the only one who cleans up their sketch with a cleaner sketch before the line art. Like you said I know it seems counterproductive, but for me, it also makes the line art faster and I can see any bits that are “off” before I finalize it. I also have a more painterly approach to my work, so unless I’m making something more simple or cartoony, my line art becomes quite minimal. But like you said it also helps me keep the design on point. I envy artists that can jump in after a rough sketch, like I can’t do that! Lol. I need a nice foundation first even if it takes me more time, I’d rather not have to adjust things later. I also draw with thicker lines but in CSP, I always use the vector layer with my lines and then adjust the width after to add some variety. I can’t draw thinner lines, it’s harder to see and feels too stiff when I work. It feels so reassuring to watch this video because I thought I was odd that I don’t work like other artists.
YES!! For me 'solid foundation' is everything. I really don't like the idea that I might have to keep ENDLESSLY tweaking shit alll the way into the finishing stage, when I watch amazing splash art paintings seems like there's constant tweaking like liquifying, free transform, total paint-over of certain parts etc.. Maybe that's just how it's done, but I feel way more at ease when the foundation is more or less solid and there won't be any radical changes at any point. x'D Lines are just the easiest thing for me to understand haha.
Wow this actually helped me so much! I was having so much trouble drawing on “one layer” for a more painted look, but it was taking so long because I didn’t have defined lineart or even a clean sketch to work off of. I just kept redrawing and fixing any mistake was a nightmare. My shadows and lighting was a mess, too. Thank you!
this painting is sooo beautiful. A small suggestion: maybe next time can you show the thought process of the color choice or how you chose the shading color? It would be superr helpful. I'm glad I found your channel!
Thank you! tbh 90% of the time I go with a very dark red (close to black, but not quite) for shadows, which is why i didn't explain much more than that. In a future video I can try to explain further though hahha, thanks for the suggestion :)
ayy, we share the same technique, i also do line art after a rough sketch, its just most comfortable way for me to shape my idea. what you said about losing the emotion/the original idea through painting is spot on.
I really enjoyed watching this, even as someone who doesn't draw digitally. You explained stuff and the way you mentioned the colours and exact opacities and stuff it felt clear enough to try emulating even for someone with no idea what they're doing!
Wow I really needed this. I paint on one layer and I struggle with exactly what you said. Facial structures warp, expressions change etc. This looks so amazingly polished!!
as someone who has never fully grasped painting and is primarily best at lineart, i am SO keen to try this method ✨ looooove how this portrait turned out too
Okay, you have no idea, I've been looking for a good video on how to do this style of shading/painting for a while and this is the perfect video showing it, I can't wait to use this method
I always panic after the flats section of a digital painting and it takes so much longer than it should - your approach is clear and the art is beautiful, I appreciate you sharing so much detail!
See I always just dont do anything other than line art because I look at pictures like this and just think...not even going to attempt. But then I saw your layers...and...realized I know how to do everything you just did. With a little practice (1-3 attempts) I think I can nail it. I've gone through worst processes...longer...annoying processes with little to no results. Thank you for this video
I'm quite pissed and unsatisfied with my own art at the moment, and at times I just hate looking at my progress even if I know that I have improved. Just the icky feeling of comparison and self doubt really put a tole on me... But even so, tutorials like these, really helped me, from the first time I watched this, to now :) So thank you so much :DD
Oh my gosh as someone who struggles with painting on a single layer as well, thank you for showing me a result like this can be achieved on multiple layers with the right technique, this was very very inspirational and though I don't use Clip Studio I think this method can also be applied to pretty much every other drawing program, in my case Sai2. Tysm!! Amazing video and drawing!!
Usually i put on videos in the background while I draw but I know I wanted to pay attention to this, your advice is really helpful and your art is so beautiful
I’ve been following you for a LONG time but this is the first video I watch from you, and just watching you go over your process it’s some like magic to me. And very, very inspiring as well. Thank you for sharing this!
Since I come from a fully non-digital background, I've found the lasso and paint methods I keep seeing so crazy intimidating. I've never been good at painting, always more of a sketch and etching person, so it's very reassuring to see you obtain this final render while inking and having sound arguments to keep at it. Thanks, that was very neat. I usually paint my shadows and highlights instead of doing shadow layers, but I'll give this a try!
my god, that painting is gorgeous. loved seeing it come to life when you added the lighting effects! There was a part of me feeling that you were damaging a good drawing when you started adding the shadows, but wow did that take it to a whole nother level!!
This video is a godsend. I have a very line heavy style, inking has always been my favorite stage. And while I've dabbled into painting linelessly more as of late, I always find that I'm missing some of the essence of what makes my art recognizable. I'm thinking of borrowing some of your process and see if that works better with how I naturally like to paint. It sounds like it should !
Yeah..other tutorials are intimidating and it doesn't explain very well, they use hundreds of different colors and layers. This is something I could try. Thanks.
I am so happy to see you drawing Fiona! I’ve been a fan of your artwork for such a long time- I preordered the comic with these guys in it when it first became available all that time ago. I still have the sticker because i could never bring myself to use it... You’ve been a great inspiration to me for many years, and surely will be for many to come! Thank you for sharing this process and talking about it!
Thank you so much!! It's so nice to hear ;u; Thanks so much for the support back then, it really helped me to keep it going. I hope to finally dive into the new version of the story on a more regular basis this year and start actually executing the project :D
look thank you so much for this video. all the time ive been wanting to do a drawing that has paint-like quality like this but i thought you actually have to paint it and i never considered lineart at all god thank you so much im so inspires now :]
i truly appreciate this video because i keep going through this phase where i forget how to color and i’m not pleased how my piece is turning. when i look for videos for a reference sometimes the type of coloring process doesn’t fit mine, so it hard for me to regain a method. i don’t know why or how i forget my own approach....i guess that just shows how i’m not much im not into coloring *awkward laugh*
Thank you so much for this. My art has been in a complete slump when it comes to colouring and shading and this has been such a huge help to push it forward. Thank you again

Thank you so much for this tutorial, this video was a godsend! I was really struggling with learning how to shade in a 'painterly' looking style but most other digital art tutorials used the airbrush grayscale method that's not for me, but this was perfect! I literally took notes lol

This particular drawing made me feel some type of dramatic feeling i love it
Glad I’m not the only one who cleans up their sketch with a cleaner sketch before the line art.
I know what you are talking about. How I struggled trying to find that little blob in so many layers. Great stuff. Love it.
OMGGGG.. I LOVE TO DRAW BUT I'M SO LAZY BUT PERFECTIONIST AT THE SAME TIME ~ THIS IS PERFECTO!!!! I NEED THIS 🔥🔥🔥😭💓💓💓
i'm 13 seconds into the video.. and i hear FIONA and i was like :0
anyways, your art is so beautiful and stunning, i love it so much
Fiona is such a pretty name. I always loved names that give off "cottagecore " vibes
ME TOO. my name is fiona and i never see anyone else with the name and it threw me off guard
You are very good at articulating your intentions and process. Bravo
as someone who has never fully grasped painting and is primarily best at lineart, i am SO keen to try this method ✨ looooove how this portrait turned out too
Shadows and Lighting is literally my weakness. Thanks for this!!
Okay, you have no idea, I've been looking for a good video on how to do this style of shading/painting for a while and this is the perfect video showing it, I can't wait to use this method

how tf am i only finding your channel now?????!!!!! friggin immaculate
I always panic after the flats section of a digital painting and it takes so much longer than it should - your approach is clear and the art is beautiful, I appreciate you sharing so much detail!
I've struggled a lot to do a more painterly look while sticking close to my original drawing -- this helped a lot, thank you!
I just LOVE your shading style! I would personally love to see more full illustrated videos with voice over, but vlogs sounds awesome aswell ❤️
Thank you for this video
all the little details are so incredibly awe inspiring your art gives me so much joyyyy
I'm quite pissed and unsatisfied with my own art at the moment, and at times I just hate looking at my progress even if I know that I have improved. Just the icky feeling of comparison and self doubt really put a tole on me...
But even so, tutorials like these, really helped me, from the first time I watched this, to now :)
So thank you so much :DD
I fell in love with your character as the video processed omg... gorgeous!!
I could watch you draw all day 😍
Such a lovely piece! Your voice is so soothing as well! Loved to see the process! ♥
Love all the flyaway hairs on this piece
Oh my gosh as someone who struggles with painting on a single layer as well, thank you for showing me a result like this can be achieved on multiple layers with the right technique, this was very very inspirational and though I don't use Clip Studio I think this method can also be applied to pretty much every other drawing program, in my case Sai2. Tysm!! Amazing video and drawing!!
Thank you! I got my graphic tab last year, but because I was busy I didn't have enough time to fool around with it. Learned a lot!
I love and appreciate this step by step more then you will ever know
Your commentary is so gorgeous and organic ! Full of feelings for the art you do
thank you! :))
Usually i put on videos in the background while I draw but I know I wanted to pay attention to this, your advice is really helpful and your art is so beautiful
thank you!! :D (I also have a ton of videos that just discuss art related topics that you can leave in the BG hahah)
I’ve been following you for a LONG time but this is the first video I watch from you, and just watching you go over your process it’s some like magic to me. And very, very inspiring as well. Thank you for sharing this!
The lighting on this is sublime
also I love the brushes you’re using for sketching
Since I come from a fully non-digital background, I've found the lasso and paint methods I keep seeing so crazy intimidating. I've never been good at painting, always more of a sketch and etching person, so it's very reassuring to see you obtain this final render while inking and having sound arguments to keep at it. Thanks, that was very neat. I usually paint my shadows and highlights instead of doing shadow layers, but I'll give this a try!
This is the first time I've ever seen a character drawn with a actual Hazel eyes. And the colors are, solid and hard, but pretty accurate
watching this is therapeutic, not gonna lie.
I don't believe this, just 3 shading layers and its already so professional looking
I need to apply some of this in my own art eventually lol
Your work is just STUNNING... i will definitely go and see more of your video's to learn what brushes , layers and effects you use. THANK YOU SO MUCH.
my god, that painting is gorgeous. loved seeing it come to life when you added the lighting effects!
Gorgeous❤
I love his name and the dramatic lighting so cool!!!
look thank you so much for this video. all the time ive been wanting to do a drawing that has paint-like quality like this but i thought you actually have to paint it and i never considered lineart at all god thank you so much im so inspires now :]
In love with the style
I just want to compliment you on how you drew his face. It feels very organic and conveyed emotion perfectly! Keep up the good work :D
Thank you!
i truly appreciate this video because i keep going through this phase where i forget how to color and i’m not pleased how my piece is turning. when i look for videos for a reference sometimes the type of coloring process doesn’t fit mine, so it hard for me to regain a method. i don’t know why or how i forget my own approach....i guess that just shows how i’m not much im not into coloring *awkward laugh*
Using the gradient for the shade base was mind blowing to me :0
Thank you so much for this. My art has been in a complete slump when it comes to colouring and shading and this has been such a huge help to push it forward.
Thank you again
Aa I love this so much, my art style/process is kind of similar to yours but I can never spend enough time on my drawings, so your quick tips seem to be really helpful 💓 Thank you for this video, the drawing is ✨ stunning ✨
Thank you so much for making this video! I have a pretty lineart heavy style and could never get my head around how to make the shading more interesting and painterly like! Completely blew my mind and will definitely try it out! Thank you again!
your lineart is AMAZING
really enjoyed the tutorial! i decided to start learning how to use clip studio and probably get a good workflow to creating art instead of arting on photoshop.
Thank you so much for this tutorial, this video was a godsend! I was really struggling with learning how to shade in a 'painterly' looking style but most other digital art tutorials used the airbrush grayscale method that's not for me, but this was perfect! I literally took notes lol
Thanks for the info about the gauche blender and paint-over layer! I was going nuts thinking my multiply and highlight layers were supposed to be perfect!
i’ve been having trouble with my digital painting process since im pretty new at it. this video gave me so much insights thank you!
