People who keep comparing the 4Runner with the Wrangler or Bronco do not understand the 4Runner whatsoever. It targets a special niche market of people who don't need the full offroad potential nor the on-road noise and harshness of the Wrangler, while needing more offroad capability than what unibody crossovers and other former body-on-frame SUVs (pre-2011 Pathfinder, Explorer, etc.) could offer. Mocking how a 4Runner doesn't have a solid front axle or front diff lock, etc. only shows your ignorance about the 4Runner's intended target market. The 4Runner is SUPPOSED to be a compromise for the weekend warriors: Quiet and comfortable enough as a daily driver, while more offroad capable than anything except a Wrangler Rubicon, Bronco Badlands, Land Cruiser, or a G-Wagon. Nobody makes fun of a Tahoe or Grand Cherokee Trailhawk for not having solid front axle or front diff lock. Why? Because, like the 4Runner, those vehicles do not target the same crowd.

    • @O-PAC
      @O-PAC 2 месяца назад +6

You hit the nail on the head. I never got the Wrangler v. 4Runner argument either. It’s apples to oranges. If you want a dedicated off roader, get the Wrangler Rubicon, if you want all around daily driver with good off road capability, get the 4Runner. Like you said it’s a niche audience. I like both vehicles. They both have their purpose it just depends on what your needs are.

I think your missing a large group of people that want high capability with the quiet. The performance of the wrangler has nothing to do with the removable top and doors.
Theres a reason people(myself included) are 1-ton swapping their 4runners and its not "ignorance" of the role of a 4runner its full understanding of what the 4runner is good at and what the jeep is good at and seeing the void in both.

@erick94sweet unfortunately that will not be for a long time. The back isn't goong to change unless they go back to an independent rear suspension. GM never had folding rear seats until 2022 because they had a solid rear axle all the way until then. People still bought tons of them. At least the sequoia has the shelf to make it a flat load space. As far as the rear glass, they'd have to redesign the back half of the vehicle. Redesigning the suspension and the rear half would be a ton of work. We would have to wait for an all new sequoia, which is at least 10 years away.

In Canada, we have never had the Land Cruiser available to purchase. We have always only had access to the Lexus LX. With that being said, the 4Runner is iconic and is known as THE vehicle of choice for off road/overlanding. The new smaller LC IMO is what the 4Runner is/was. The 4Runner is also not cheap and in Canada has always been a $50K+ vehicle and is the second most expensive SUV beneath the Sequoia (it is more expensive than the Grand Highlander). The Land Cruiser will be a $75K vehicle here, and the 4Runner will be right beneath it (for SR5) and then overlap when you get to the TRD PRO. The 4Runner name has far more cache than the newly created Land Cruiser - as it is not the true Land Cruiser.

Forbes Magazine mistakenly published an article 45 mins ago revealing the new 4Runner (hours ahead of the actual reveal). Forbes has since taken down the article, but I managed to save 3 exterior photos. Powertrains identical to Tacoma (turbo 4 and turbo 4 hybrid + 8-spd auto). The front looks almost identical to the new Tacoma. The rear quarter windows (trunk/third-row area) go almost all the way to the roof like the 1st Gen 4Runner. The TRD Pro and Trailhunter, with the OEM lifted suspension like the Tacoma, look FANTASTIC (but all trims look great) and it's an evolution of the 5th Gen (except the V6 is gone) with much nicer interior and up-to-date tech. Yup, $10K+ dealer markups here we go...

The Trailhunter 4Runner will likely cost over $60K+, well into Land Cruiser 250's price range. However, the Trailhunter is for people truly serious about offroading. The LC250, on the other hand, targets those who always fantasized owning a Land Cruiser yet couldn't afford the $95K price tag; and now, for the very first time in their Gen X (or Millennial) life, they can finally put a "Land Cruiser" in their garage. The TH and LC may be within the same price range, but they target different folks with vastly different intentions. Toyota knows what it is doing. 😉

I really can't decide between Land Cruiser, 4Runner or Taco and I'm not going to sweat it for two years until I have my pile of cash saved up and I test drive each of them. It's nice to have a lot of different options. I have to try and keep the wife away from the GX.

While there may be some pricing overlap, more choice for buyers is always a good thing. The same buyers will most likely even test drive both 4Runner and Land Cruiser at the dealer and just like one better over the other. America loves SUVs and CUVs. Can't wait until reveal it tomorrow. I'm excited to see it.
As far as the current gen 4Runner, I think there's much to be said about the venerable 4.0 V6. It's a known great engine. You might get more power and MPG out of the new 4 cylinder hybrid, but people take comfort in knowing what they're buying is reliable.

How about 4R vs LC differentiated via a MT option?! 4R sharing platform w/ Taco, so essentially make the drivetrain & trans options of Taco available in 4R. I like the new LC, but no question if 4R provided a MT option, guys like me will buy the 4R over a LC simply because we love those 3rd pedals.

With the 4Runner and Tacoma being so much the same the pricing of the 4Runner should be able to be VERY competitive considering the parts sharing with volume now 400k units or so between the two models. Something to consider even if it is unlikely. Overlap is not good between models really. It will be interesting to see how Toyota plays this out.

70k. They are already marking up outgoing 4Runner TRD Pro’s to 63/65k. If they feel the 15 year old outgoing model is worth that much they’ll surely be asking 3500/5500 more and that’s 70k range. Which is why the GX with the V6 turbo is a better bet. Better interior and more power = better value for the money overall.

Dealerships in Colorado are pricing new Land Cruisers @ 76k for a non luxury twin turbo 4. Even if the 4Runner trailhunter comes in at 65/68k, it would be massively overpriced. There’s going to be another layer of the same kind of high prices with this unit unfortunately.

I'm not a Toyota guy by any means but I'm really intrigued to see this new 4Runner. Probably because it's been fifteen years in the making. Toyota holds onto their designs for many years if it works. Just like the Tundra it's gonna be a big reveal. I just hope it doesn't disappoint like the Tundra did. But considering the teasers already seen, it looks to have promise, especially the similar design and that sliding glass they've been known for. That's a cool trait that many SUVs just don't have anymore. Toyota definitely listened to their audience with that one. I agree with you on the big screen aspect. I'm sick of it too and would rather go back to more buttons or smaller screens that are built flush with the design. Not some giant tablet glued to the dash.

That would result in less overlap, and if anyone wants the full trailhunter experience they can just get a tacoma th... but also there is that possibilty that toyota is just throwing everything out there and don't really care if their vehicles overlap or not..

I don't think it's matters as much as people are saying that the 4runner will overlap the land cruiser a bit.
What matters more are the two different demographics they are trying to target. How much they are willing to pay for an SUV is only a fraction of what entails a demographic.
I'm sure land cruiser is targeting those who always wanted a land cruiser when it was in its prime.
And 4runner will be sold to the masses as well as 4runner enthusiasts.
For example, if I had $60k to blow on an off road SUV I would take the 4runner because I would want an overlander and I haven't grown up wanting a land cruiser. I know why a land cruiser has such a huge following but emotionally I have no connection to it so the cheaper, higher spec for overlanding option would make sense.
