It comes standard with a 2.4L turbo 4-cylinder engine making 278 horsepower and 317 lb-ft of torque, but the i-FORCE MAX option adds a hybrid powertrain which is good for 326 horsepower and a strong 465 lb-ft of torque. Thomas and James are excited to have a first look inside and out of the new Toyota 4Runner, and see what the new generation has to offer. We hope you enjoy the episode. SUBSCRIBE!

That last word you snuck in at the end 😂
Funny af
Had to rewind to make sure that's what I heard 😂😂
I was drinking at that exact moment...and spit it haha
I’m still laughing at this
I had to replay it twice, the 2nd time was just for confirmation. lol
The big dumb smile while the rear window goes up and down is perfect. SO happy they kept that.
It's not kept, it's planned.. You know, for the camera that's sitting there, recording.
That's why i love this channel, goofy and cool!!!
@@MyRealNameI think he’s talking about how they kept the window not the clip showing the window
I was semi hoping James would be inside of it.
When Akio Toyoda issued a companywide decree for "no more boring cars”, he was not F*CK*NG arround 😂.
And approves a 4 cylinder in a tank 🤦🏻♂️
@@ndilaok2709you can thank your government for that one and the EPA.
@@ndilaok2709shut up dude
@@ndilaok2709Yup. What could be more boring that a turbo 4 these days?
@@COMMANDandConquer199it’s not boring for sure, when you get the repair bill for the turbo crapping out
‘98 4Runner owner here. The visual cues and platform are both perfect. If this 4cylinder can last as long as the 3.4 V6 while burning far less gas, then Toyota has a new legend.
@Rfk1966 ('97 5spd owner here) YES! agreed, a car like this should be measured by how long it lasts. But they should have made it smaller, it's too big.
@@colinspeirs5182 Maybe we should judge it in another 5 years as that’s the break in period. Agree, waaaaay too big, but what isn’t now. (Congrats on having a 5 speed)
@@Rfk1966I just don't see high boost 4 cylinders under high load on a truck chassis being reliable enough for the Toyota badge. They do good engineering but they can't engineer their way out of the basic laws of physics 😅
Also the turbocharger system and hybrid systems have exponentially increased maintenance costs anyway which I don't think is very toyota of them. I feel like a huge part of the reputation for reliability was also that when it did break, it wouldn't clean out your wallet like a German vehicle.
Do you know what the word "exponentially" means? @@zenkoz3158
@@zenkoz3158 Do you have a Toyota??? I have had several, now I have the hybrid rav4 till I can buy one of this ones, and my mother has a prius. None of those cars, has cleaned my wallet. The Prius needed a battery change after 9 years, and after that is as good as new. So I could be that you are just speculating.
In another note, Toyota also has blunders, just look at the new Tacoma.
Just so you guys know, 4runner means crown in Slovakian
😆😆😆
I GOT THAT REFERENCE
nice
😂😂😂 glad someone wrote this
So you're saying that this is a Toyota Crown?? Disappointed!!
Embargo dropped lol, just got like 6 notifications 😂
6 notifications for the 6th gen 4Runner
Lmao same
What's even funnier is that it seems they basically all had the same review truck...
Why I don't use stupid notifications. I just check my Subscription feed.
Forbes got AM and PM mixed up.
"If you're bajaring" - best new verb of 2024. Thanks, James
Bar-harring
I heard it more like "The Bajaring", like NW Mexico's answer to the Nurburgring.
I read this comment at the exact same time Thomas said it and that was hilarious.
10:59
HA! Perfect time stamp.
yea like...wtf???
😂
peanuts?
Ok…so I wasn’t the only one who had to do a double take😂😂😂
I really enjoy Thomas and James just sitting/driving together and just talking about the car, it’s an entertaining breath of fresh air and I love it
James being cheeky at the end. Don't think we didn't hear that. 😆
True professional outro 😂
Caught me off guard lol.
Great job on the video folks! Thanks for making it.
I have been waiting for the new 4Runner so I can go buy a new one, it’s my favorite to drive I have had all through the 4th gen. I love y’all!!
Great short video reviewing the new 4runner thank you guys!!
Lexus GX overland + gets my vote. More Cargo space with no batteries, V6 twin turbo that can tow up to 9000lbs, and center lock diff. I will check them out in person. I was always a 4runner guy since 1999. Now I think I prefer the Land Cruiser and if money is not a problem then the Lexus GX Overland + is what I'm leaning towards.
This version is my favorite 4runner since my 2000 3rd gen. I just really like the look of the new Land Cruiser and GX
The GX also costs nearly twice the median annual income.
@@rightwingsafetysquad9872 2023 median income was approximately $60k and the base MSRP of a GX550 Overtrail + is about $77k, so....no.
@@marc8vinonot giving the 4R or LC a version of the TTV6 seems like a misstep to me...leaving it only in the GX means you have to step way up to get the best powertrain, which is a shame. Especially when the LC implements the interior design better than the GX this time around.
Hybrid powertrains are great *when* they are made properly. Given that we're talking about Toyota, I'm inclined to give them the benefit of the doubt and presume that it was made properly and therefore will be better than just a plain ICE.
I had a 98 4runner and one of the best things about it was the fact that you could roll down the back window and open the sunroof to get a great breeze coming through.
The ending was gold, thank you James 😂
I'm in love with the styling of this most recent generation 4runner on the roads. This looks awesome and I'm not disappointed!
Everyone is reviewing this today! I chose to watch you. You guys are the best.
Love the 4runner. Have the gen 4 with the 1gr-fe with 352k miles on original engine and transmission. Glad they kept the back window row down feature as well cause I use it all the time.
352K that's awesome
@@Zeno7741 Yeah she has been maintain very well. Around 350k I replaced the radiator, hoses, water pump, pcv valve and hoses. Also replaced the timing set since these are know stretch with high mileage. Replace all orings for the oil pickup tube as well. They were starting to get hard. Hope she will make it to half million miles but I be surprised the transmission make it that long.
Big-up for comparing it to the LC and explaining it all to us. Love watching u 2
I saw LC and thought lc like LC500
IMO Toyota has been KILLING IT. They listened to the fans, back window, big buttons, rugged interior, aux switches....love it.
But that gloss black fender trim though...
@@Unicornpirate agree...would def do something about that.
If they listened to fans it would have the same engine
Yeah, this comment is
is so a paid POST. Looking at the hybrid engine (which sounds like a prius litterally) and then a more plasticky interior ripped out of a RAV4 i mean you people must be born YESTERDAY 😂
I dont like it. Too much tech. High tech motor. Im sure by the time my 5th gen dies the 8th gen will be out so ill just wait
That closing from James..... 😆
Wow, almost 300k subs! Nicely done, gentlemen. 👍🏻
So happy to 😅see the notification. Love your reviews. Missed the list of fun sports car or sedan car under a certain price list.
I like the Land Cruiser more. This is a cool suv, and I’m sure it’s really nice but the Land Cruiser seems more mature. The inside just seems really busy. I like the outside of this but the LandCruiser I think looks a little better, but that’s personal opinion.
It is wild though that they have this, Land Cruiser, RAV4 TRD, and a Sequoia.
I think the Land Cruiser is much more muted. I prefer the brawn of the runner 😊
The Land Cruiser [Prado] also costs more than a previous gen GX (that you can still find new). Great truck, stupid price.
@@rightwingsafetysquad9872 Agreed. Wild for both prices truthfully for similar vehicles.
Im not an off-road SUV/truck guy, but the fact that toyota is putting out all these options for offroad people while also having the GR Yaris, corolla, supra and 86 for car people AND having economy cars, hybrids, electrics and even a hydrogen car is insane to me. Definitely the brand with the most to offer right now.
Land cruiser looks like a shitty hummer
Oh my gosh the end got me 😂
Perfectly timed last word. I chortled. Damn near choked on my own spit. 10/10 caught me off guard.
I read the comments and had no clue what to expect. But was not disappointed 😂
What were they smoking putting gloss black on the fenders of an off road trim? Or any SUV!?
They were vaping
That was my first thought. Full on trail stripes the first time you brush a bush.
My guess is the glossy black parts are pre-production and will be different in the final production model. But it's also stupid enough to be true, so who knows?!
Key word: trim. I know they have off-road capability. But let’s be truly honest; these vehicles are pavement used lifestyle accessories for the vast majority of buyers.
They know 99.9% of them will be bought by suburban dads that like to mall crawl instead of rock crawl and by soccer moms that need a bigger vehicle than all the other moms at school to feel 'safer.'
“I don’t want to get involved; you guys fight it out” 😂😂😂😂
All reviewers need a “Harrison Test”.

Wow never been this early. Keep doing what you’re doing guys. Best car reviews on the planet.
That thing looks positively massive for a 2.4L /278hp. Cant wait to hear how it costs 70k
Exactly
Yes, people are disappointed by a more complicated and lower displacement engine-why wouldn’t we be?
More power baby
I'd bet my ass what you save on gas will cover any additional maintenance or repairs from a "more complicated" drivetrain.
It's a government mandated compliance engine and it's not about fuel economy, it's only about emissions. Just retired from the auto service business and unfortunately you will be be looking at a very expensive turbo replacement in 80 to 120k miles.
You lack the understanding of how engines work, and you think “bigger = better” because that’s what your boomer daddy told you.
@@risby1930 A turbo replacement at 80k miles? In a Toyota? Lol. Kia has a warranty for their turbo hybrid engines up to 100k, so a Toyota will last that long EASILY.
Man you guys are great, keep up the great work. I’m stuck between getting the Land Cruiser, GX, and now this.
I like the look of how the rear glass wraps into the roof, but the windows themselves don't, so that's just a styling element. That decorative glass is very vulnerable when loading stuff onto the roof rack...not that many folks will.
Wow. Looks surprisingly good
So the answer is LandCruiser with the OME suspension and tires from the Trailhunter?
I had to double back on those last few seconds 😂😂😂 so freaking funny for no reason 😂😂😂
you guys held this from us until 10pm est! I cant believe you guys
To start I think it looks great. But anyone else think it kinda looks like the old Isuzu amigo updated?
The black fenders give it an odd look
lol can’t wait to see these markups when people are paying 70k for SR5 Tacos.
Still not sure where Toyotas head is it when they have 4-5 vehicles that essentially all do the same thing. That’s if you don’t include the Lexus versions.
And people buy all the versions of them, even if they are the same car.
It's the same with all other makers..
Can't tell the difference between Trax, Trailblazer, Blazer, Equinox, Traverse..😂😂
Ima get the 2024 Tacoma trd pro still waiting on them to arrive…this will be my first new car out a dealer..got the money ready
sweet ride! makes me miss my old 85. and miss it's removable top. shame the new one don't have that
Sneaking that wording at the end was hilarious! I'm now subscribing because of the comedy.
The funny thing is, the segmentation for these triplets is far easier for those outside North America.
You have the GX with its TTV6 engine. (Same engine as the Land Cruiser 300) for those who wanted the power.
The Land Cruiser 250/Prado gets the old tried & true 2.8L 4cyl Turbo Diesel (which also powers the Hilux & 2024 Land Cruiser 76) with a Mild Hybrid option in the future.
While the 4Runner is simply not sold anywhere else except the Americas.
While the GX
I think it looks absolutely amazing! It is a huge style improvement. I love it! It looks rugged, but modern. Based on the new more angled lines, the have certainly reduced the drag coefficient. The beauty is that, they haven’t _changed_ it. It is still a 4Runner, but refreshed and beautiful!
The interior is perfect! Technology and f***** knobs and buttons as there should be!
I think is a massive win! This is what car manufacturers should be doing.
the change to the engine is massive... and not in a good way.
Love the reviews and you two are my favorite to watch. I think the trio all missed a big opportunity with not having a plug in version as well as a good 3rd row. Even the Sequoia has a horrible 3rd row that doesn’t fold flat. The closest one would be the Grand Highlander but it’s not very masculine. Still waiting on the perfect Land Cruiser/4Runner so I can trade in my current SUV.
The 4Runner originally was a conversion from a pick up truck and equipped with a PART TIME 4WD system. Lately only the Limited trim comes with a FULL TIME 4WD system.
Anyone else confused?
Yup if you don’t pay close attention they jump around with the features
Imma need a rundown of all the trims with like a spreadsheet
Watched 3 min of this to understand ur comment! 🤦🤦👌😂
the GX has a 3.4L 6 cylinder. the Toyota products only have 4 cylinder products. that’s a major differentiator as well. the GX will get the hybrid powertrain at some point, but the Toyotas won’t get the 6 cylinder engine.
I hope you’re right!🙈
Wow Extra Throttle house has grown so much; this video has more views than the official Toyota reveal... congrats!
So cool these guys dropped such unique and exclusive content just randomly at 10:15PM.
ITS HAPPENING!!!!
Overall good effort by Toyota but i hate the stuck on tablet screen with the sharp squared edges. They could have integrated it within the dash like in the Land cruiser 250. Plus I think they should have given us a 3.4 L TT V6 hybrid set up also.
I honestly think that this new 4Runner is likely the most anticipated new vehicle release since the new Wrangler. Toyota, you've knocked out of the park ! Well Done !!
Looks very cool, wish we can get it in south africa.
Enjoy your show guys, keep it coming.
that looks properly INSANE from the outside. Suuuper aggressive looking. The hybrid powertrain definitely feels like a must for what's surely a pretty heavy thing but I'm honestly just happy it doesn't LOOK bad. Inside looks proper, as well. Glad Toyota decided to retain a lot of physical buttons and maybe even just as important, matte plastics! The war against gloss black interiors continues haha
I mean, it looks more muted than the 5th gen I think. Stubby angry headlights instead of big angry ones. But side profile is awesome, classic look
It looks aggressive in a bad way
Exactly, the hybrid will provide plenty of the low end torque
@@channheng5197 not even that at all. you are overestimating what you think it will be more power when it’s been aimed for efficiency. Why do you think it sounds like a prius?😂 Literally IT DOES SOUND LIKE ONE.
So same price for this, LC, Sequoia, and the GX, but only the Sequoia and the GX have both a third row and a V6. A high school intern must be running product at Toyota.
they're way too closely related
But it's good for customers having more options to choose
Yes but all around the same price. There’s no “cheap” option anymore
That last word randomly thrown out before the video cut out 😂 Never disappoints lol.
this or a taco has always been a serious choice for me. currently have a highlander but id love something that can tow or offroad
Toyota brought all the new 4x4s to one location and called every automotive youtuber and said "line up"
I just figured out that the 4runner is just a SUV Tacoma, the sequoia is just a tundra SUV.
Only been like this for ~40 years for the Taco/4R and ~25 years for the Tundra/Sequoia!
😂
Sort of… the older 4Runner was Japanese built and shared more with other vehicles than it did with the Tacoma. The Tundra / Sequoia however were always pretty much the same vehicle. The oldest 4Runner and Hilux (pickup) were both Japanese and on basically the same vehicle though.
Y'all good together 😁😉😂😂. Good content 💯💯💯💯
Yes! More adventures like the previous one please!
Dont know if im the only one who noticed the center seat in the second row isnt independent folding
Yea I was hoping for captain chair option also like the GX
The Toyota and Lexus design language is just perfect for these new gens they all look amazing
No doubt, this looks cool as hell.🔥
Looks great
Miss the v6 though
Sick paint job
Hopefully the Hilux/Fortuner duo for the rest of us will receive an update or a new gen.
YES. But now that the Prado has been updated, hopefully that will happen soon too.
for most the 4cyl was the deal breaker on this generation… but the limited 4WD capability is kinda of a bummer, I’m definitely excited for the Land Cruiser review, I’m in the market for a car in 2 years so I’m taking these models very serious
maybe I missed it--how is the 4WD limited?
It’s not a high performance SUV who gives a damn about the engine. It has over 400 ft lbs of torque and has probably nearly double the fuel efficiency as the last gen 4Runner. I’d much rather have this drivetrain than the gutless V6 in my taco
@@SIat double the fuel efficiency??? keep dreaming lmfao.
@@JC-dc7eb I said nearly double dipsh*t. My taco gets 14 mpg city and the new one gets 22. That’s roughly 60% better fuel efficiency while having roughly 70% more torque. Faguette
There's a JBL speaker on the dash that can be removed and used as a Bluetooth speaker, like in a Rivian
Probably a small thing, but I couldn’t quite get a hand on what James said at the end?
I found it quite hard as well...
Heard it clearly - “P.N.S.” = peripheral nervous system…he was all tingly from the excitment of the new 4Runner! 😅
Piano black fenders? Weird bull dog jowls on the front facia. Side profile has this weird old Chevy Tahoe thing going on. I wanted to like this so bad and while it’s not necessarily ugly, they missed the mark in my opinion.
i thought they were going to bring back the removable top as the 1st gen to compete with the Wrangler n Bronco
I want to see this in white/black. Love the design inside and out.
You’d have to pull up the spec sheet but the rear leg room looks at least 2” smaller than previous gen. That was the first thing I noticed on the new Taco, second thing I noticed which put the nail in the coffin was the price. The Taco, especially if you want the hybrid goes up to like 63k CAD, which can get you into a pretty nice F150 or Sierra. I think this thing spec for spec will be about 3k more than the current MSRP and the Hybrid will only be offered on the TRD-Sport Premium +, Off-Road Premium +, and the Limited and TRD-Pro/Trailhunter. Premium + is an 11k upgrade, and TRD-PRO around 15k, so the Off-Road Premium + will probably be around 68-70k cad. With the Pro pushing 75k…If I was in the market for a 4Runner I’d be jumping out right now and getting a new last gen and spending the difference on aftermarket upgrades, you will never save the price difference in fuel. Imagine a Bronco Sasquatch with another 10k in upgrades or a Rubicon.
*wipes tear from my eye.*
"It's beautiful."
Give me this over the Landcruiser any day
The TRD Off Road was always the "overland stuff" model. I know, because I have had 2 lol. The TRD Pro is simply the "Baja stuff" model. Nobody with experience paid extra for the Pro, just to replace the Fox Shocks, roof rack etc with aftermarket parts lol
While initially confusing, this seems like a smart strategy to have the 4Runner and Lamd Cruiser overlapping so much. It changes the debate to Toyota vs Toyota, not Toyota vs other car companies.
ehhh…no manual. Between this and Tacoma I’d go Tacoma. Between this and Land Cruiser I’d go Land Cruiser.
Same.
I love it! It looks so funky!
Lads the Waffling meter nearly hit 10/10 with you two today.
In Middle East the Landcruiser is different, bigger and same like LX, your landcruiser is Prado here, so it's more complicated there, but we don't get the 4runner unfortunately
Holy Crap. This new 4Runner looks amazing
Looks like crap. Those hideous wheel wells. Looks like stuck together Mr Potato
One of the best looking body on frame suv in recent memories. It's a fresh breath of air for folks wanting to hold on to their faithful ICE.
yeah, if you like an engine that sounds like a prius.😂 ITS CUTE THOUGH
James is such a menace lmao I'm at a weird place with the 4Runner rn. I'm happy it's back, but sad that it doesn't have the 3.5TT V6 at least. But also the GX and Landcruiser Prado are here so now it feels over crowded and the vehicles overlap into each other.
Best ending to a video yet!
Looks Sick quite honestly
Made in Japan, wow, so best build quality. This car will last an eternity.
Until it gets stolen. Toyota is doing nothing about this.
@@write2nickwhat does have to do with the original comment? Also thats why you have insurance…
@@ChocobohunterWell Toyota is the most stolen vehicle in my area so it doesn't matter if car will last forever since it won't be in your possession. The existing insurance policy doesn't cover stolen vehicles for some strange reason. You have to double your premium if you want stolen car coverage. I know I was also surprise to find that out. Toyota doesn't do anything to improve anti-theft feature on their vehicles neither.
It’s wild I like the look of the trd pro so much I’m actually considering ditching the 21 lc200
Looks like Toyota strategy is to position Landcruiser as am overlander which is geared towards daily driving with this being more dedicated for heavy 4wd out of the box.
Mudbath colorway looks so cool
It's about time they made a 5Runner
6Runner. 6th gen lol
Toyota has been doing the triplets phenomenon in Asia and Australia for a long time now
GX - LC Prado - Fortuner(4 runner size suv based on Hilux, even comes with a V6)
They have been successful with it so I guess it will work in America as well.
Fortuner will also receive a new model year this year which will make it more similar to Prado which is LC in USA..
Y'all need like a detailed comparison at each of these types of vehicles together. Maybe a road trip in one new one and one old one as well?
Holy shit, Toyota NAILED it.
They’re going to sell a billion of these at a billion $ a pop
Yeah, it's going to be expensive and super past the Land Cruiser price depending on trim. Anything with the hybrid Max will be over $60k in my opinion.
Doubtful, most purchased this because of the V6 and now they have been force by the government to neuter it and people will start to lose interest
Engine choice is a mistake. Could've kept the V6 as a 3rd option.
@@TermlessHGWthe v6 that doesn't exist in any new trim across the entirety of Toyota? The last one to have it is the Camry, and that will no longer exist as of later this year. 4cyl doesn't provide all of that power. Electric motor is helping for a good chunk of it.
