PA actually doesn't give you monetary vouchers anymore on their new subscriptions. Now they give a certain number of plugins you can choose depending on which sub-model you pick. For example, I get the smallest package and I get 3 free plugins each year. The way you describe it is the old model, which they still honor if you didn't switch over to one of the new ones. Just thought that was worth mentioning.
Agree with you about the amount of plugins you need. I was influenced by the amount of plugins a lot of the well known RUclips engineers appear to have. Then I realised a professional engineer NEEDS that many plugins as they receive mixs from many different clients. Guys like me watching and learning can get by with a fraction.
Native Instruments’ Komplete Ultimate is my choice. Perpetual license and update as and when you want. Lots of instruments and effects plus sound packs. And now, other manufacturers are included (Plug-in Alliance and Izotope for example). I usually don’t update at each new version. I wait until the additions get significant enough that it makes sense for me and then spend the money for the update. I also try to wait for a promotional sale. Between Komplete Ultimate and Cubase, pretty much everything is covered. I have a few special selections from other manufacturers but that is a rather small part of my tool collection.
@Neon Thunderbird that's true at times but remember it's one guy and he won't have a bunch if people testing the plugins before release .he would usually fix any bugs when people report it. And he is quick to fix them. But its ridiculous being free . A lot of his plugins are way way better than paid plugins . People are programmed to fall for marketing tricks and would overrate those plugins and think the free isn't good .

I never had issues with his plugins that I can remember. Don't forget to subscribe to his patreon and support this guy so he can grow bigger.
Meanwhile, in Wavesland, everything is 29,95... just as it used to be due to the "perpetual sale state" that made almost impossible to get something for the list price almost every day of the year. You can make your pliugins keep working if you almost pay again for them as if something about OS updates worked with different economics at Waves compared to any other plugin manufacturer in the solar system, and last but not least, just to make sure you don't think Waves is mad at you, and to give you proof of their customer-centric spirit, there are NO upgrade options. Say, if you own 4 Abbey Road plugins and you feel like buying the entire bundle, your previous purchases make no difference... you have to pay for the entire package full price. Bob Marley would ask "Is This Love?"
Did that also recently, ahhh, just some 45 yrs in the past ... the more simple woodwork I have around me, the better. Best together with high quality stone. Natural stone and old wood, perfect combo.
Arturia is one of my favorites. I’ve dropped some coin on their plugins. 😂
Год назад+3
Once you have one of their audio plugins, you can get their full mixing bundle for a much cheaper price inside your account. Same for the instrument bundles.
I totally concur about the Arturia packages, both their effects as well as their instrument plugins. Top quality stuff and can hold their own against any of the ones that Barry mentioned.
Hey Barry carpenters son here. Built two studios and an independent TV studio as well as most of my house. I'll be looking forward to your new channel. Slate and PA user. Agree with all your other recommendations.
sonible plugins are very interesting. I use them (in combination with Fabfilter) as my go to plugins. The AI features on sonible are useful in many cases. When EQing poorly recorded material, it cleans up the sound and set it at a good position to start mixing, the compressor has some flexibility due to the transfer function, and the limiter is very clean and has a loudness meter that can be set to different delivery targets. It's a great set of plugins for home studio mixers imo.
For anyone whos hasn't tried Plugin Alliance's version of the Dangerous Bax EQ, I would highly reccommend. Main reson I purchansed it was because I knew a mastering guy who actually sold his hardware unit after hearing it and just uses the plugin version now. Thst says a lot.
Fabfilter are my main plug-ins for processing, Also I use for sound and such is N.I Massive, N.I FM8, Meat Beats instrument Collection That is it, As for the rest I chop up samples from vinyl and old skool loops. Great video Barry looking forward to your new channel pal. 😎✌
I'm done with Waves. The update fee always annoyed me because there was never any added value. Customers were forced to pay Waves to do updates that they should have been doing on their own. Then came the latest hostage situation. I won't do business with a company like that. We're with you on the new channel. Looking forward to learning something new.
I’m done with waves also. I’m on a late 2013 iMac and just updated to Catalina cuz Mojave got left behind. I’ve got waves V 14 now on all of them but I’m never giving them any more money period. I have waves tune but it’s too time consuming. I was about to buy waves real-time when they sprung this crap on us. Now I just want to keep what I have.
I completely agree with you Barry. I use Fabfilter, UAD, BRX and just picked up the SSL channel strip and master bus from SSL. I think the I have maybe 15 plugins all together if that.
Great video! I’m for sure gonna follow your new channel as I’m working as a carpenter and dealing with a lot of woodwork daily. I agree with you and to me, SSL, Fabfilter, PA and Softube are so much better than Waves plugins and it’s the route I’ve been going for a few years now. I don’t know that much about Slate Digital, heard great things about them but to me the other plugins manufacturer that I love is Arturia. Their FX collection is outstanding, I compare them a lot to Softube on the interface look and their take emulating analog hardware. They are a little cheaper than Softube when you purchase the bundle but think they are worth every penny. Would love to hear your take on Arturia in the future. Can’t wait to follow your new RUclips channel, once again, great video, enjoy the Florida weather as spring is coming late on the British Columbia Gulf Islands 🍻
I am not prone to flood comments, but as a frustrated Waves and Avid guy, I have really been impressed of late with Analog Obsession plugins. I know, hard to think free could be good, but I would encourage someone to go grab a couple and test the equivalents of your faves in A/B tests... SSL Buss compressor, Pultec, and Neve style Channel strip... some very good stuff.
I'm a user of Plugin Alliance plug-ins, but I don't understand why it takes forever to create native M1 AAX versions. Now we STILL can't run ProTools on Apple Silicon natively.
I jumped on UAD Spark subscription and I was one that swore I would never do subscription. I have to say that I am very pleased with the tools they’ve provided this far and I do feel like they have enhanced my mixes. What I appreciate is that what they’ve provided is meat and potatoes to get you a great sound. A few reverbs, a few choruses and one great delay. I have a few Softube plug-ins as well and they almost always make it onto my mixes. Specifically the Drawmer 73. I’m certainly not part of the UAD cult but I’m very pleased with how they’ve changed direction and it seems like they are truly trying to be customer focused.
Thank for sharing Barry. I find a lot of the sock plugins (Studio One & Logic) are quite good along with Plugin Alliance. All the best with your woodwork channel, which I'm looking forward to. Do you have any plans for a video regarding Atmos?
As other people have said both of these, if you get a Komplete collection that matches your needs along with Arturias v collection and fx collection will essentially set you up with instruments and fx for any project ever. Native instruments customer service and relations can be iffy sometimes but the value and variety is pretty second to none. Arturia on the other hand have done nothing but impress me with customer relations and loyalty. Toontrack products would also really tie everything together. If you want 7 emulations of the same compressor or eq, these wont be for you and I wouldn't know where to tell you to go.
This week has driven home the need to shift over to majority hardware. Stock plugins and a few select things like soothe2, a few UAD, Softube, SSL, PA/Brainworx, and maybe a couple of other specialty things are going to be it on the plugin side.
I agree with you completely and have come to a lot of the same conclusions myself. I've been dumping Waves as quick as I can find replacements. I've picked up the SSL channel strip and bus compressor; and then went and bought an SSL2 interface that comes with the vocal strip (meh) and the drum strip (really good), for less than the price of one of those plugins. Also went to plugin alliance and grabbed the Kirchoff Eq (that thing is simply awesome). Also picked up Denise Bass XL to replace RBass, and grabbed a couple Melda plugins too for various things. The biggest surprise to me was finding that Cubase has a bunch of really good limiters built in, so I didn't even need to buy anything to replace my L1/L2's. I will also note that instead of trying to replace my 200+ Waves plugins, I've only been replacing the ~10 or so that I used regularly. I just don't need, or want, 200+ plugins anymore. It was a pain to scroll through the lists to find the one or two that I wanted on each track.
@zarlok5294 both the lexicon units they emulate are amazing the one that's native has gotten alot of love from me recently because I get free native versions due to owning the dsp ones. But I really like pure plate and the emt 140 plate all from uad.
Barry mentioned Acon Acoustica and I agree. Their 30-day trial gave me time to try their plug-ins & when the trial was over, I bought the Acoustica suite/collection. There is a bit of learning curve but they also have presets that you can experiment with as you're learning how they work. Sure, I have my old Waves plug-ins but use them far less now b/c of Acoustica. Thanks for these other recommendations as well!
AC audio Ash limiter is a beast of processor to me they are ahead of the competition in soundqualityand price , Uad guy here , their core plugs sounds very analog to me , love Slate 2 ,
Thank you Barry- I gotta buy a new Mac mini- been using a 2012 w an i7 processor (quite successfully) since 2013. But now, since I am faced with the daunting task of upgrading the heart of my rig, I've been seriously thinking about a complete overhaul, eventho I still want to use a bunch of my outboard gear. While doing some research, I Found this channel, subscribed, and absolutely appreciate this vid! Now I'm really gonna be busy at Namm next week- lol. Thanks, man, looking forward to watching more!
Softube and their Console 1 Mkii. The integration is seamless, it sounds fab with the stock SSL plugins, and the 2 times I needed support, they've been very helpful. One time I wrote them Friday evening, and they answered within 30 minutes. Also Arturia. Bought a cheap controller with Ananlog Lab 5 years ago, and they still update that - and gave a huge discount on the large synth-pack. Also TDR and Valhalla. TDR Nova is a fantastic dynamic EQ, and it's free....The paid version having a bit more features.
They also realized they would be sued into oblivion from license holders. They would be violating their own agreement with those that were legally previously purchased.
I have already given up most of my Waves plugins, even though I bought them. But I haven't found alternatives for Reel ADT, MV2, Aphex and R-series (R-vox especially). Waves plugins are like time bomb in your workflow, you have no idea if you have to stop use them anytime.
Barry, .. nice content. I've been a user of commercial, business softwares, that seem to be evolving into these subscription methods, also. I haven't been into plug-ins, .. yet, anyway, but who knows, in times to come. I've been concentrating on modular synths, lately. I was noticing the pretty wood, on your table. Is that dyed, .. or is that natural? I used to mess around with wood, .. there's woodworker, James Krenov .. that inspired me. Thanks, man.
Thanks for the video Barry. Really appreciate it. Not directly related to specific plugins, could you do a review of the latest Harrison MixBus 32C? Using that DAW, it brings down the need for most of those plugin bundles.
Agreed on Slate and SSL I’m interested in Fabfilter and Brainworks. And double agreed on getting your plugin use lean, mean , and consistent and find your sound exactly like any musician.
@@timbushong4387 Looking at it right now. I run an Apollo X 6 and a Duo satellite and have a pretty decent lineup of UAD plugins. I’m at the stage where I’m starting to narrow my focus and my biggest issue is getting good translation. My room isn’t treated and I’m not able to do that. I recently stopped mixing on my KALI IN 8 2nd generations and I’m actually getting much better mixes on my AKG 371’s. I have a lot of Waves plugins. A lot of it was bought on shiny object sprees. (Dumb) I may try a Braiworx scrip and see how I like them. I’ve got to learn mastering and consistency. Thanks for the reply.
@@lil_floofer I have ozone 9 advanced and have started using the vintage EQ in mid-side mode. Impressive. A lot of the ozone stuff confuses me and seems to have too much of a mind of its own. I wish I’d bought the pro Q 3 last year when I had the money.
Ya know, I heard all the hype about FabFilter and pulled the trigger on Pro R, Pro L, and Saturn 2. I really rarely use any of them. They are ok, don't get me wrong but to my ear, other plugins sound much better.
hey, yeah I have some of the SSL plugins. I got into them after getting my SSL 2+ interface, and I've been buying them on sale when the sale emails come around for $29/49. But I gotta be honest, and say most likely it's my lack of knowledge, but I can not get them to sound right and the preset are never what I expected. I can dial in the settings on the stock Ableton plugins and basically understand what was changed and why. But when I do the same on the SSL plug ins it doesn't sound right to me (Bus Compressor v6, and Channelstrip v6). Everything sounds 'fluffy'. Again, maybe it's my skill level, but if can dial in what I'm thinking of faster on stock, I can't recommend the SSL for casuals like me. I do see some commenters having a good experience with SSL so that's cool, and if they're on sale they're worth trying.
I was always saying why people think Waves is the best, because of their never-ending commercials, thanks to my curiosity, I gradually left this grotesque manufacturer to finally discover audio with others. 😎
You may not want to use any gloss or high gloss coating, because it can be very toxic for cutting boards. Cutting boards are better covered with an natural oil.
Thank you for mentioning softube. I’ve been on the fence about their products for a while, but your recommendation might just be the last drop in the proverbial glass! About other manufacturers- I would be quite curious to hear your opinion on the TC electronic native plugins as well as the Tokyo Down plugins - especially the TDR Nova vs the Fab filter dynamic EQ. Thanks for all your remarkable content!!!
I’m really enjoying plugins direct from SSL & Eventide at the moment. Of course my go-to workhorses are still UA. Don’t use Waves at all any more even though I have a bunch. When I compared my CLA LA-2A collection to the UA standard set, I stoped using the CLA right then and there. Waves had the market cornered once upon a time. Those days are long gone. The SSL plugins are quite sensational, I must say. 😎👍
I have a sub to Slate All Access Pass and I love it. Yes it has a few gimmick plugins like everyone else however for the most part their plugins are top notch!
There's a hardness to Waves' plugins that I've gotten accustomed to utilizing over the years. Really it's probably something most plugin makers try to avoid when coding their own! But still I often miss the way their CLA 76 cracks when trying other 1176 types. It makes UAD, Arturia, etc all seem weirdly soft in comparison. Which is often better in a given situation of course. But sometimes.. the cla just hits the spot. Their SSL channels and bus comp, and Renaissance EQ all do it too, among others. UAD coders probably think that hardness sounds like shit lol but it does have a place imho. Kick and snare for instance. Very snappy. Hard to replace.
I will when it’s out, I’m still working through all the technical stuff getting lighting. I gotta get AC and everything else installed here so I can probably get control of all of that.
I use all of the manufactures you mention -almost the entirety of Acusitca Audio's catalog as well as Softube 's (and a Console One + Console one Fader ). That being said, Arturia are some of the VERY best designers of Analog emulations out there....rivaling everything out there. if youre an analog emulation guy or gal (who isnt), their stuff is in my opinion, the very best
The new plan with PA is no longer a voucher for the amount of the plan it is now a certain amount of plugins based on how much the plan is. Im a mega xxl subscriber they now give you 10 plugin choices to take instead at any cost which is better than the old model.
I love the SSL plugins, especially those that are free with the the UC1, which I now use on all projects i.e the Buss compressor, the 4Kb and the Channel strip V2. Buying the UF8 or UC1 gets you 6 months free subscription to all their plugins, but I'm not sure I will continue with it as I'm not making money out of mixing just yet. I do own the entire Antelope set of plugins which are IMOH awesome, problem is you need to own an Antelope unit as they are DSP only, and their AFX2DAW is too buggy and introduces high latency, so i'm only using them as hardware inserts, but there's no doubt to their quality, and I hope they will do the same as UAD and make them available to either subscribe to or purchase to use as inserts, and consign that AFX2DAW plugin to the dust bin where it belongs.
They already know I wouldn’t let them. If I like what a company does, I have zero problem promoting it. They make a dumb move that is not in the interest of the user, I’ll be the first on them.
PA, absolutely, I own many of them. But I would actually like to mention Analog Obsession. And I would like to encourage people to become a patreon for just a small amount. Many of his plugins are really good and they're free, you don't have to become a patreon. There's no need to buy anything, you can get it all for nothing and have great stuff at your disposal.
I dont have, and want to spend any more money to replace all my plugins. As much as I dislike Waves now. I think i spend enough money. I fine with what I got I think
Hello Mr. Barry, Re: Plugin Alliance, you're behind. It's even better. i pay $39.99/monthly for 10 months. After the 10th month, i get & get to keep permanently, 150-180 of their plugins.
Sometimes I feel all these hokey plug ins create cookie cutter productions anyway, they are not bad at all they are quite good, but I hear less and less risky sounds because of all the emulation and access to "perfection" maybe this will force people make great ear choices and learn their craft. These are just my opinions.
Arturia, SSL, Cableguys, and Kilohearts. Best bang for your buck in my opinion.
Would love to see a PA "best of" video, your go-tos on that. Also, FabFilter looks great but damn are they pricey.
AC audio Ash limiter is a beast of processor to me they are ahead of the competition in soundqualityand price , Uad guy here , their core plugs sounds very analog to me , love Slate 2 ,
your epoxy game is 🔥BJ
UAD and Fab Filter Total Bundle is all I need. 😉
Hello Barry could you please do a clip on the ,
Eventide H9 Max Harmonizer? Thanks
Great video. I’m a happy uad and console 1 and fader user I won’t be changing any time soon 👍
looks like SSL plugin are going subcriptions too!
Sonible are awesome too.
Tokyo Dawn Labs. They have fantastic plugins for the price range.
Honestly, if I was gonna do a plug sub, it would be Waves. I don't actually use a lot of non-stock plugs, though.
Barry, .. nice content.
Fab Filter fan here.
Don't forget about Melda Productions and HoRNet plugins.
Agreed on Slate and SSL I’m interested in Fabfilter and Brainworks. And double agreed on getting your plugin use lean, mean , and consistent and find your sound exactly like any musician.
The Brainworks stuff is just excellent.
You will never regret getting fabfilter plugins
@@lil_floofer I have ozone 9 advanced and have started using the vintage EQ in mid-side mode. Impressive. A lot of the ozone stuff confuses me and seems to have too much of a mind of its own. I wish I’d bought the pro Q 3 last year when I had the money.
Ya know, I heard all the hype about FabFilter and pulled the trigger on Pro R, Pro L, and Saturn 2. I really rarely use any of them. They are ok, don't get me wrong but to my ear, other plugins sound much better.
Interesting. Why has no one mentioned McDSP? Thoughts? Thanks
McDSP is just fantastic, and their sub is a great value.
hey, yeah I have some of the SSL plugins.
Never on cutting boards, check out the channel when it comes out where I explain all of that.
unless you need something very specific, then your DAW plugins will do the job.
REAPER stock plugins are as good as anything else for recording and mixing. I think only thing that's a must is other more exotic reverbs.
Hornet are pretty good and are great value for money.
Thank you for that comment...a lot of good information in it!! @sixthsanctummedia9822
Sound Toys?
Exactly what happened with Waves? Why are they out?
I have a sub to Slate All Access Pass and I love it. Yes it has a few gimmick plugins like everyone else however for the most part their plugins are top notch!
Barry have you tried the new Softube Bus Processor? If so are you going to buy it? Please give me your thoughts.
Damn I want an epoxy tabletop for my standing desk.
Well, when I launch my channel, I’m gonna teach you everything you need to know about making one yourself
Is that a guitar body on top of that scrap on shelve? Do you planing to do video about luthier stuff?
Yes I do
I use IK, NI, and Brainworks.
What if I'm just getting into audio and have no plugins?
Stock, TDR, Kilohearts, Melda, Voxengo, Analog Obsession, Airwindows
Post the link to the channel I wanna watch
I will when it’s out, I’m still working through all the technical stuff getting lighting. I gotta get AC and everything else installed here so I can probably get control of all of that.
Softube, Native, IK, iZotope...
And there are so many free vsts out there!
My core plugins:
Plugin Alliance
Arturia
Sonible
SSL Native
Newfangled Audio
Honorable mention for Sonnox Claro
I use all of the manufactures you mention -almost the entirety of Acusitca Audio's catalog as well as Softube 's (and a Console One + Console one Fader ).
That being said, Arturia are some of the VERY best designers of Analog emulations out there....rivaling everything out there.
if youre an analog emulation guy or gal (who isnt), their stuff is in my opinion, the very best
Waves sooooo crooked. Changed their mind in one day lol
I’m the first comment. You rock Barry. 👍👍👍
You rock!
IZotope all the way bro
PA might as well sponsor you.
They already know I wouldn’t let them. If I like what a company does, I have zero problem promoting it. They make a dumb move that is not in the interest of the user, I’ll be the first on them.
Any specific plug in recommendations for vocal compressor?
UAD or Slate Digital!
@@matt_nyc_audioengineer Thanks!
👍👍👍
Hey Barry how are ya ! Great Channel, Any thoughts on Presonus Sphere
I dont have, and want to spend any more money to replace all my plugins. As much as I dislike Waves now. I think i spend enough money. I fine with what I got I think
Hello Mr. Barry,
Re: Plugin Alliance, you're behind. It's even better.
i pay $39.99/monthly for 10 months.
After the 10th month, i get & get to keep permanently, 150-180 of their plugins.
Plugin Alliance do not work this way now. They give you 3, 6 or 10 pluins a year, whatever plugin. I have Kirchoff, Oven, Vertigo 2, and so on
Dotec-Audio plugins are good
Sometimes I feel all these hokey plug ins create cookie cutter productions anyway, they are not bad at all they are quite good, but I hear less and less risky sounds because of all the emulation and access to "perfection" maybe this will force people make great ear choices and learn their craft. These are just my opinions.
