Hey Kirby! - since you were giving me so many wonderful tips with your videos, let me give you one in return. I use my sanding drum on my Dremel crafting tool to smooth the edges of my soles. I find that I have more control with it, and it’s a lot easier, and it’s easier to avoid damaging the leather of the upper. Best, Matt
Where abouts are you based? In cities like New York it is a common practice to prevent icing on the roads. The downside is the damage it can do to high quality leather shoes.
Q1: Do leather soles require oiling or other treatment after being exposed such amount of water and/or salt (e.g. de-icing agent on streets)? Q2: Is there any difference in how you would treat a Rendenbach (J.R.) and a 'generic' leather sole in such a scenario?
Leather requires some moisture. After being expose to harsh conditions it looses a lot of it. So yes, it's always a good idea to treat the sole afterwards. For that purpose different stuff can be used, starting with just ordinary polish and leather balms to specially designed oils for soles. Q2 - no.
Some people say you shouldn’t mirror-shine Cordovan shoes, but seems like no issue with that. Is it not preferred to use Venetian Cream as conditioner on Cordovan? (First time I see someone using Renovateur)
@@kimberly_erin I don't believe that's the case. At least I havn't heard of any other Renovateurs other than normal ones(there are two, both for general usage).

Hi Kirby, Great video...man I'm so confused. For year's, I've been watching your tutorials. I remember vividly, you warning against using pate de luxe on cordovan. Since, It contained solvents. Solvents would harm the fiber structure of cordovan. How often would you use paté de luxe? What's changed?
Question: When using "Saphir Medaille d'Or Renovateur Crème", do you always need to follow up with "Saphir Medaille d'Or Crème Pommadier" or is the Renovateur enough if your shoes are not scuffed or in need of extra pigment?
Hey what do you do when the cleaning product - whatever it is - soaks straight into the leather in blotches and spots, and stays there! I bought I nice pair of tan $200 double monks for ten bucks from a charity store, but now they're ruined because I just used my usual cleaning methods on it. They have these ugly stains now! I've left them out in the sun to dry out...will see how that goes. Otheriwse I'll just recolour them a darker colour I guess..... Any ideas Kirby, or others?

This renovateur is a different formula specifically for Cordovan.

The suede is good to go. Durable and only needs a good shampoo and a brush occasionally.

Emil you don’t need to add shoe cream if they aren’t scuffed, and if you aren’t looking for more shine.
The similarity of steps, to women putting on make-up is amazing.

Why no care for the suede? Wont it need nourishment and waterproofing?
No need to nourish the suede, brushing it with a crepe brush is sufficient enough.
It MUST be waterproofed. I would have washed, nourished and waterproofed those boots if I was doing this work.
