Wtf, seriously, a budget EV conversion leaves in the 80 year old inefficient, noisy, heavy, unnecessary and unreliable transaxle to save a buck, and you think this is technology to be adopted? We did this on beetles 40 years ago, most EV conversions back then used to do this for the simple reason it kept costs down and made life easier. But we know better.

    • @DripDripDrip69
      @DripDripDrip69 2 года назад +7

      From a engineering stand point this is stupid. Transmissions exist because combustion engines have a limited RPM range where it produce the most torque(typically 2000~4000 RPM) so in order to keep the engine RPM inside the happy zone regardless of speed you need a transmission. Electric motors produce almost flat torque curve from 0 all the way to redline(typically 15000RPM for most AC motor) and to make an AC motor run faster you don't really give it more power(volt or amp) but you increase the AC frequency. Keep the transmission inside an EV conversion is having a solution to a problem that no longer exist. It will do nothing other than adding internal friction and weight, thus decrease range.

    • @kadajawi2
      @kadajawi2 11 месяцев назад +2

      Not that much more expensive though, and it'd be more efficient at higher speeds too. You could reduce the batteries needed etc. Also, such cars would be more for enthusiasts... and they do produce the MX-5 and GR86, right? What reason for existence do they have other than to give the owners a smile on their face? Cars like that can't stay petrol forever, they too have to become electric eventually. And this is the solution.

    • @TimpBizkit
      @TimpBizkit 9 месяцев назад

      @@kadajawi2 you don't tend to have the same losses from running electric motors at higher rpm. No pumping/exhaust air resistance losses or cylinder wall friction. No alternator belt or power steering. Electric motors can slow down when you let off the power but that force is optional by changing modes to become a generator and not a continuous parasitic loss (although with an ICE the throttle losses are less when using it than when engine braking). The old brushed motors were a little more lossy when spinning quickly. The magnets and steel coil formers would tend to hold the motor in certain positions when stationary but it was more of a repel from one, attract the next so it mostly cancelled out.
      Also, the "red line" on an electric motor is usually at low rpm high load (unless it's spinning so fast that the coils fly off) when it becomes more of a heater due to reduced back EMF and also less air blowing through the motor. When you take the load off an ICE it spins faster and faster until a rev limiter stops it. With an electric motor, it reaches a self limiting "no load" speed and doesn't even use much power to stay there. I think in my electric middrive bike it's about 20 watts to keep the motor at maximum speed by itself, so for most riding, you may as well let it rev in a lower gear to prolong the life of chain and internal gears. If you let it bog in a high gear it will heat up and waste battery.

    And then they should make the interior nice, practical and more normal, we don't need a touch screen for every thing. Give us button's for AC, radio and stuff that should be easy to control without looking while driving.

    It’s a pretty good idea. New electric cars probably won’t use manual gearbox since it’s pretty pointless when you look at the torque characteristic of an electric motor.
    But if you want to convert old cars to electric, nobody would bat an eye over details like performance or efficiency. You just want it to feel like as fun to drive as powered by ICE.

    • @jirkazima1126
      @jirkazima1126 2 года назад

      It depends on the electric motor design. There are motors that cannot do very high rpm, but they are cheaper to produce and have good size to fit them between the gearbox and ICE. Look at modern plug-in hybrid cars. Even if they run in the "EV only" mode, the automatic gearbox is changing gears because such motors slowly decreasing available power after reaching something about 3000-3500 rpm.
      But for sure, they could have used a high-rpm electric motor and direct drive here like with regular BEVs (it would require irreversible changes in the car chassis though). On the other side, in certain countries, it is much easier to pass the legal procedures when the conversion does not involve the gearbox change (not sure about now, but at least in the past in Czech Republic, this was the case here).

      Its less efficent and heavier so no range improvement, kinda like how automatics became faster than manuals around 15 year's ago now.
      And as soon as that happened manuals went the way of the dodo.
      Instead you can expect some range reduction vs a single speed reduction drive gearbox as is the standard for evs.
      Even Porsche admitted they only did the 2 speed rear trans for the taycan because is helped initial acceleration up to 60mph.
      And other evs on sale today still spank the taycan with their single speed reduction drive gearbox. Rimac&aspark have done 1.6s 0-60 runs on the st while on st legal tires. 😎

    Finally. They heard my prayers. I've been saying for a while now since EV's came out, why people couldn't simulate combustion engines, they've been doing it in video games and movies for years. With the right amount of effort you could bring back and tune down electronically all these vehicles to feel and hand;e the same way, heck you could even with some potential, make specified settings depending on the road conditions.
    Is it a new era for oldtimers? Yes, Sure, nothing beats the good ol' stuff, but this can light in a complete new chapter.

    Finally! An electric conversion with a manual. Kudos to the Electrogenic engineering. The only caveat I heard in the presentation was the issue with downshifting. Downshifting is an integral part of the manual experience and Rory seemed to suggest the car "shutters." That's unfortunate. I didn't hear any mention of regen braking. Is it possible downshifting could act in this fashion? When one goes to a lower gear, the added resistance on the motor translates to regen? Still, the overall package certainly enhances the drive and reduces the antiseptic experience of most electric cars.

    • @darmou

    Why has everybody already given up on ICE cars? Electric cars are not as environmentally friendly as people think. The mining and refining process of lithium, which is the main component of ev batteries, causes huge amounts of pollution. Furthermore, EVs are made in a way that the batteries can't be replaced, so after about 10 years the batteries won't be able to carry charge as they used to, same as an old cell phone, rendering the car useless. Also, what should we do with the millions of ICE cars that have been built, wouldn't it be more environmentally friendly to use what we have instead of throwing them away? Porsche are developing new biofuels which when used in any ICE car produces 85% less CO2 than normal fuel without any changes to the engine. Porsche will produce 100,000L of this fuel in 2022, and is already using it to power the 2021 Porsche Cup series. This with electric cars might be a good solution for the future, but saying that ICE cars are gone and EVs will be the only modes of transportation in the future is misleading and false.

    • @nordic5490
      @nordic5490 2 года назад

      Get up to speed mate. EVs emit less than half the greenhouse gas that ice does over a 20yr life cycle (full cradle to grave). If you source your electricity from renewables, then evs emit

    • @georgesriachi8485
      @georgesriachi8485 2 года назад

      @@nordic5490 What I'm saying is that the best solution is biofuels and EVs together. We can't just say that ICE cars are dead and rely solely on EVs. Furthermore, ships and planes will remain reliant on fuels for a long time. Therefore, wouldn't it be more environmentally friendly to produce a less polluting fuel for them? A single flight from London to New York produces more pollution than the entire F1 season with all sessions and cars combined. If an environmentally friendly fuel is produced for planes and ships, then a similar version of it could also be used for cars and trucks. Together with EVs, this might help making mobility in the future more environmentally friendly.
