  • Doctor Who and The Giggle may have changed the entire canon but this video is about the Celestial Toymaker. A villain from the 60s that maybe should've stayed there...
    Let's talk about it.

    What did you think of the Toymaker? Where the stakes high enough for you or did the episode fall flat?

    • @charg1nmalaz0r51
      @charg1nmalaz0r51 7 месяцев назад

      he was a dumb enemy because he was too powerful. Then you have to pretend he cant catch a ball. He could have walked on the air, teleported under it before it hit the ground, magnetise it to his hand. I dont like magic characters, because its really stupid trying to justify actions with them

    • @ForgottenFafnir
      @ForgottenFafnir 7 месяцев назад +2

      @@charg1nmalaz0r51 I mean, they literally say outright "He won't cheat at his games. That's the one thing he will never do". So him not cheating at his games... makes sense. So it's less they failed to justify his actions, and more you didn't notice the justification.

    • @ForgottenFafnir

      Personally, I did like the episode overall. I think the Toymaker was too 'playful' in this depiction though. You can in universe chalk it up to the fact he was trapped in another realm for millennia with only the odd lost traveler to play with, suddenly getting access to an entire universe of toys and players. 'Kid in a Candy Store Syndrome' essentially. Some parts were good. The Spice Girls Scene perfectly summarized this new version. A Force of Chaos that does whatever he wants on a whim, without care to the lives of others, if it gives him entertainment. Reminded me of other characters in that Genre. Your Bill Cypher's and Mr Mxyzptlk's. Which again, isn't bad in a vacuum. But it isn't. It's the return of a classic Dr Who threat.
      What I loved about the original was his calm, yet stern and menacing demeanor. And how he saw through every ploy or plan of the doctor and stopped it before it could even start. He really did feel 'different' and powerful, someone that the Doctor wouldn't be able to beat normally. That is gone in this version. You see hints of it, as the puppeteer, in card game, but those are just two scenes in an hour long special.
      The other issue, obviously, is the lack of obvious stakes. Yes, the Toymaker is a threat to all of existence, and the Doctor has to stop him. But in focusing on that, they completely forget about 'The Giggle'. And it was such a simple fix too. Raise the stakes. All the world leaders are affected? Seems like an easy way for Nuclear War to start. Now the Doctor has a reason to actually play the Toymaker's games besides just 'I'm angry that you're making fun of so many deaths that are my fault'.
      Now the Giggle is a threat, there's an actual sense of urgency as the Doomsday Clock ticks down, and we have an actual reason to why the Doctor needs to play his game and win! Easy. Can swap out the childish tantrum scene with the threat of Nuclear Attack, then have the Head of Unit say 'they're all like this. If we don't find a solution soon, there might not be a human race left'. Have scenes of Nuclear Warheads being primed cut in and out of the catch game. Then as the Toymaker is sealed away, the world leaders come to their senses and stop the countdowns. Boom. Fixes almost all of the problems.
      The Game of Catch itself also is a bit anticlimactic. I understand WHY (First game was a Game of Mental Prowess, the Second was a Game of Luck, so the Third game had to be Physical in nature), but they should've had the Doctor explain. Or the Toymaker. The Doctor getting to pick the second and third game was weird, since in the original it was the Toymaker to picked and made all of the games.
      The final thing is just... them keeping David Tennant. This is an overall issue, not because of the plot, but because it's just so blantantly obvious the screenwriters were like 'We need to keep the 10th Doctor around for emergencies to appease the fans if we screw up again'. If they actually do something with it past that, I'll be less annoyed, but... eh. I'd rather they'd given the 10th his well deserved time of rest.
      Putting that aside though, the Episode was good. Not amazing, but it was good. While I feel the points I made are valid, it doesn't ruin the episode for me, and I feel that saying it 'Killed Dr Who' or it 'Is an affront to what the series stands for' is whitewashing the series. People forget, Dr Who is equal parts silly as it is serious. For every Cybermen or Empty Child, you have the Doctor fighting Cactus People, Alien Clowns, Android Santas, Evil Mannequins. Hell, The Star Beast is an adaptation of an Classic Who adventure, and the original Beep was far more comedically evil than he was in the adaptation. I mean he literally smoke cigars and looked like a Cartoon Rabbit Toy (Honest to god, didn't think I'd ever be defending THAT. But here I am). Not to mention the amount of charmingly terrible puns you get in almost every single Doctor after the First.
      Sorry for the outburst. But I do wish people would stop demanding perfection. You've seen the Timeless Child, you know what actually 'Killing the Franchise' looks like. This isn't it. At worst it's Neil Patrick Harris having the time of his life and making the most of his screentime. All the characters are portrayed and characterized well, there's no retcons or lore twists (Besides possibly making the Timeless Child a bit less damaging, which I'm not against), and overall, I'm fine with it. I'm glad they brought the Toymaker back, even if I felt they made him a bit too lighthearted and 'fun'.
      And... yeah. That's about all my thoughts summarized. I think Ncuti Gatwa played the 15th Doctor well in this episode, and I have some hope for his series (Some hope. At the end of the day a 'Good Doctor' means nothing if the plot is garbage)

      @@ForgottenFafnir In the 60s the games weren't fair. Cyril the robot opponent cheated all the time. RTD just needed an out when he couldn't come up with a way of defeating him.
      I've thought of one. If the Doctor had been palming the balls from the earlier catch game (a very Doctor thing to do) he could have thrown them all at once, or the current one after a decoy and won with guile, while still being within the rules.

    Per the slow down (re: the Doctor always adventuring), Classic showed this with every doctor from at least Tom Baker to McCoy. Many stories started with them completing a vacation of sorts.
    p.s. The half human line has never been hard for me to explain away. The context of that is a party scene where he's essentially telling a git to push off, so it's easy to rationale it as a flippant oddity expressed just to make the guy react as he did (incredulous surprise, and maybe go away). Not sure why everybody feels the Doctor is a reliable narrator in that moment.
    That said, the writer probably intended it to be truthful, I agree. That writer was an idiot, however. ;-)
