    We really need to get back to the 13 episodes per season - having a combination of independent adventures that sprinkle in the hierarchy of the plot while we get invested in the new doctor and his companion(s). These short seasons make it hard to really get any sort of emotional attachment to the characters and makes them so underdeveloped. I enjoyed this episode as a one off adventure but wish there would have either been more to it or it would have been just an introduction to the future encounters with rouge and build that tension. Loved it but there was missed opportunity. Hopefully they go back to the 13 episodes per season.

    The lack of any form of inner conflict or actual doctor/ruby conflict really came through in this episode for me. Everything is just... Quite smooth? Aside from the odd "fake death" scene from Ruby or someone else

    You guys are being a bit harsh on this episode. You've spent weeks asking for a classic Doctor Who episode and we got one. The relationship between Rogue and the Doctor did take up a fair amount of the episode but we got a decent amount of the Doctor doing classic doctor things, even running, which I think might be the first time of the season. We got a classic Doctor Who villain. Ruby finally did something other than exist. Bridgerton was a decent backdrop for the episode. The motives of everyone made sense. The doctor actually solved the problem.
    My main negative of this episode was that rogue magically pushed ruby out of the trap which was a bit inconsistent with what they had previously established. And I kinda wish the doctor would stop inviting people to travel with him, he did it to the toymaker too, then in this and in dot and bubble.

    • @burgunbeerd
      @burgunbeerd  3 месяца назад +6

      It's entirely possible we are being overly critical on it because the relationship didn't land for us and that felt so pivotal to the episode. Like instead of a lackluster ending to something it was a very flat middle. It's above Space babies for me (Dan) at least. But a full season rewatch once it's all out is definitely going to happen

      I don't totally mind a conflict-free relationship. It worked all right in the "Thin Man" movies. But we'll see.

    This episode screams missed potential, mainly because of how short the season is. I like Rogue but if he stayed for a couple episode before getting banished to some other dimension, then his and the doctors relationship could really get worked on.
    Also that part were the doctor has a flashback to a conversation with Ruby's mom could have had a lot more punch, if that convo did not happen off-screen.
    These two things really feels like something that were supposed to be expanded upon but couldn't, because there is only 8 episodes and we are going to the Twist at the end now.

    I feel like this was the most watchable of the new season. Rogue had the potential to bring some Jack Harkness energy back to Doctor Who. My one issue was how quickly the Dr seemed to fall for him, seeing as how Rogue demonstrated a lack of critical thinking/curiosity and a willingness to kill before even properly verifying he had the right person. Those wouldn't be traits the Dr likes, meaning I guess he was just going off pure physical attraction? It certainly took him much longer to develop a connection with Rose or River Song for instance. It feels more in character for the Doctor to take a long time to open up, given his history of losing people.

    why? I don't get this episode at all. This new iteration of the doctor run by Disney has me baffled. I'm so confused, and conflicted. I really am starting to think that this show isn't for me anymore. I'm having trouble being able to put words to it too. I came into doctor who in 2005. and I'm my experience, the doctor isn't sexual. at all. He does kiss people, yet he is always awkward and perplexed. the closest I think he came to really having a relationship was with Rose. They absolutely loved each other but it was grown over a few seasons and believable. It really feels like there are way too many cooks in the kitchen for this run of the show. I am having trouble believing the doctors and Rubys relationship. I don't think they have chemistry. I keep watching and week after week I am finding my enjoyment waning. I'm going to have to watch the rest of the season then have another watch and really get my thoughts together. And I don't care about all the Doctor being gay. I loved torchwood. I loved all that. it was subtle, not slap you across the face with it. I don't know. maybe I should just go outside and touch grass for a while?

      Idk for me I just enjoy all doctor who, I started with classic and it had a lot of trash lol. But many great episodes, the show has always had very great episodes and bad ones. Writing that doesn’t make sense or add up, heck could have been written better if they looked at it twice. The 1996 tv movie added kissing in and after that lol, the doctor has been kissing people and “dancing” does it bother me eh. I think it makes a conflict where the doctor doesn’t wanna fall in love with anyone that won’t see the doctor for themselves, because when the Doctor inevitably regenerates they are scared they won’t see them as the same person anymore. That’s why River was perfect cause she is Timelord. But basically show changes and goes back and forth, in my case I just roll with it and enjoy it hasn’t ended again

    This episode really was just death by a thousand cuts for me. Was there a reason Rogue's ship bird shaped when the baddies were also birds? The Doctor putting Rogue's ring on his pinkie especially with all the other rings on his hands felt weirdly insulting and demeaning more like "another fine addition to my collection" than something to remember him by. Also definitely agree about Rogue and the Doctor having very little chemistry, it all just felt awkward, but then I'm always weirded out when TV show characters jump into romantic relationships that fast so that might be a me thing. Also I hate when shows do this, especially monster of the week ones; focusing on a topic like racism so heavily last week only to completely drop it this week when the episode is set in 1813 lessens the impact because you made us think about racism and now you're ignoring it, retroactively lessening the severity of what happened in Dot and Bubble.

    • @burgunbeerd
      @burgunbeerd  3 месяца назад +1

      Steven had about a 5 minute bit on the racism last week then 1813 this week that you mentioned but it was left on the cutting room floor, we decided that they ultimately get away with it because Bridgerton gets away with it and it's carried on. And also maybe devils chord was meant to be between them. But also yes it is an odd thing for them to do

    The Doctor in "Girl in the Fireplace" told Mme. de Pompadour to pack; he was going to take her with him and didn't tell her no. He was also pretty okay with staying on the slow path with her when it seemed he might get stuck there. I mean, I don't really love it, but it's interesting you don't think he was that invested. I like the idea of his not being invested, really.

As a young gay fan myself, I’m happy that they want to include gay relationships - and tbh I totally did take a shine to Rogue - but not at the expense of the character dynamic integrity or the overall quality of the show. I’d rather have something meaningful than quick. It all smacks of cosplaying as the gay/queer experience.

    I think it's kind of funny how you're going on about how quickly it took the doctor to kiss Rogue when we've seen the Doctor kiss females much more quickly... Queen Elizabeth comes to mind. And I wonder if maybe men who don't have any interested men just don't on screen chemistry, I don't know. My daughter and I thought they were well matched and she's not interested in men, so? I would agree that the episode felt too short, I don't think that it was unrealistic the way they built it up compared to previous episodes where the doctor had some kind of on-screen entanglement- Like the girl in the fireplace. It would have been nice to have a full hour, But you got to work with what you're given. And you keep talking about how you didn't like Loki and Kate herron was on Loki. According to IMDb, she's credited as only directing, not writing Loki. Writing and directing really aren't the same thing. Especially since her writing was going to be overseen by the showrunner anyway because everybody knows that the showrunner for Doctor Who has overall edit on whatever happens on the show- Neil Gaiman has been pretty vocal about his unhappiness about the final edit of one of his scripts that he wrote for Doctor Who.

    • @burgunbeerd

      Usually it's women kissing him. A s the speed of the kiss isn't so much our issue as the lack of time it took to fall in love and form a seemingly incredibly meaningful relationship with him. Its less than even the whole "2 hot leads get together after a life threatening experience ala 'Speed' kinda deal"
      I've definitely seen on screen male to male chemistry work before, people are people.
      Herron was director and EP for all of Loki s1 so it would've been much more than just standard tv directing, she's said before she spent over 3 years working on it. So she was probably closer to a showrunner at that point. I don't blame her directly for the episodes short comings, that definitely does fall with RTD as god king emperor of all Who
