      I like Ruby, I think she has a lot of potential and it seems like her narrative run will be a slow burn. But I agree this doctor and Rube have no chemistry. I'm not sure what draws them together. What does he enjoy about her company and her his, kinda feels like he just picked up a random and he's struggling to figure out why they're friends

    @5:40 - and Ncuti being true to the Doctor - doesn't ask who it is screaming... imagine if it replied :"I am Davros i am hurt" ..... like that time Capaldi encouintered the flower hands with eyes and a boy named Davros

    Everyone's entitled to their own opinion but for me this episode was when Ncuti finally fully felt like the Doctor for me. I already liked him but needed to see how he handled serious situations.
    If i went over everything here we'd probably be here all day but basically his Doctor felt like he had echoes of his previous incarnations inside him. Particularly 11 and 12. And some of his line delivery felt very Capaldi which impressed me.
    Especially towards the end when almost mocking Mundy's blind faith and slowness to see the truth. He felt like he viewed the situation and her as beneath him.
    I think this episode solidified his character for me.
    As for Ruby and the Doctors dynamic its going by real quick thats true. But it felt more less like they were just pal's this episode and more like Ruby was willing to die for him. Again yes its going by fast but I still believed it.
    This was the first time 15 felt older than Ruby to me too. Like he's the guardian responsible for a kids safety and when she didn't obey him or when she got shot, its on him. Hopefully in following episodes this comes up as a point of contention between them. With him being way more protective of her.
    So yes this episode fully convinced me Ncuti's the right guy for the job. I just hope the writers have more incredible stuff in store for him.

      i kinda agree with you but for me it could also just be Moffat writing the Doctor. I hope future episodes help him stand out but only the Bridgerton episode is written by someone other than RTD. I need 15 to feel more iconic and individual

    I didn't like the fact that the doctor instantly sprinted off into an obvious battlefield. It contrasted against his supposed intelligence. First rule of first aid is to make sure the coast is clear, so you don't just become another injured person. Surely he'd be a little bit cautious of a battlefield???

    I like the idea that Ruby is related to the Trickster in some way, and i think its obviously the song inside her will be more relevant towards the end of the season. I dont really know why the doctor and ruby are sticking together, basically zero chemistry.
    I'm kinda just hoping the show figures out a way for the doctor and ruby to have chemistry and good narratives that are enjoyable to watch till we get to the episodes that reveal the big season plot twists

    • @DanyTheMe

      Yall really don't see chemistry between the two?

    • @jakejancook
      @jakejancook Месяц назад

      @@DanyTheMe I think it's just that we're comparing these two to the iconics. The doctor offered Donna an exciting life away from her boring one. Martha and Doctor had a borderline romantic relationship. River and Doctor were married. Amy was really driven and motivated and did her own thing and the doctor was constantly having to keep up with her...
      It kinda just feels a little but like the Doctor is going to these places, the problems kinda solve themselves without him doing anything, and Ruby is there. I guess he wants to give her a break from her average life? But it doesn't seem like she's unsatisfied with her life the way Donna was
      I do think, looking back, it'll make more sense. I feel like the season twist will explain why the doctor is keeping her around, but at the moment she's kinda just there and hasn't really done anything other than be there while everything solves itself

    • @DanyTheMe
      @DanyTheMe Месяц назад +1

      @@jakejancook I disagree.
      In space babies her background in foster care immediately comes into play when communicating with the babies. She serves as a perfect ambassador between the doctor's curiosity and the babies needs, and she's the one who first pointed out that everything in the ship made sense as a narrative, while the doctor was still focused on how it made sense in a material way.
      Then in the next episode, her background in music is the literal catalyst for the adventure, the way they find out who's the antagonist, and ultimately what puts them in the same place as the people who end up sealing away the maestro.
      In the one after that her manic stubbornness emboldens her to ignore the personal risk yo her to help the doctor stand on two feet, greatly increasing how much time he had to disarm the bomb.
      All of these character traits were set up at the first episode with the Christmas goblins.
      Her character feels defined and well utilized to me.
      She's with the doctor because of her desire to know who her mother is.
      The Doctor is with her because her unique upbringing actually makes her a perfect match for his new "feel your feelings, cherish the people around you, good music, cute outfit changes" personality. And also because she's a literal walking time anomaly.

    Nit-picking, but the prop makers who made the mine needed to pay attention to the mesh in front of the lights. Some close-ups show a perfect mesh, and other close-ups show a crack/gap/cut in part of it. I'm assuming it was a brass etch that had a flaw, and they filmed the close-ups from different angles to get different light sequences (i.e. they didn't light the whole circumference of the mine, just the bit that shows on camera.)

    Loved the secret word themes again! Vater, father.... Splice? a part of something mixed with another thing? Isn't that the meaning os splice? So maybe there is still mystery leading to who was the timeless child thrown through the portal. And did you catch this part : i bet the child regenerated going through the portal. Or was it the same kind of portal as used by Gatwa to come back from Gallifrey after genociding them all? So much mystery that COULD be used to make fans fall back in love with the show if they manage to get the sh*tshow of pandering on a leash. Maestro is the most perfect vilain to my eyes as a music afficionado. The scenery in 73 yards was amazing. Boom I'm moot about honestly, not bad... Dot and Bubble still has so much unexplored lore AROUND it. I literally had a TARDIS kind of vehicle as a "land set spacecrat" with a forcefield shield bubble like this years ago. With Chrono Trigger, Dragon Ball as influences using such domes. And Philip K D1ck lore. The spirit powers jackals of PKD remind me of Sutekh. Also : PKD used the spiders from space theme in The Divine Invasion, where a character similar to the Doctor is in play! They follow him on TV and they later meet the character. Surprised cuz they thought it was a show.... they gotta set this up as a future Doctor Who script...

Nothing interesting about her relationships, her sense of identity, her goals in life, her friends, her life, how she relates to the doctor etc. She's just... a cardboard cut out of a young, excitable companion. As for the doctor, I feel much the same way so far. They're both just... instant best friends? With a little bit of added mystery about snow falling and meta add ons and Susan Twist. Here's something I'm wondering. There has been a lot of debate over the new era. In regards to different story lines, casting and etc. Well Boom just came out recently and people seemed to like that episode a lot. I asked someone recently if they saw Boom or Wild Blue Yonder first before anything else of this new era, would the be more onboard with Doctor Who and they said yes.
    So here's my thought, I honestly don't think people are against the idea of Trans characters or Disabled characters or people like Jodie or Nctui playing the Doctor or exploring different angles to characters like Davros or Doctor Who leaning more towards the supernatural and so on. But more on how it has been delivered in the show. Now Doctor Who has created a trans character before in Big Finish, Tania Bell. I asked about her in the Big Finisg facebook group and immidately I had loads of people praising the character. I checked the reviews and everyone says the same thing, well written dialogue and solid chemstry with the characters too.
    So that's positive proof that people aren't against having a diverse cast or trying new things in Doctor Who. It all comes down to the delivery. How it comes across in the programme. I look at a show like Bluey where in 7 minutes top, one Bluey episode can convey so much! People can read inbetween the lines and spot things in the background. The basic show don't tell rule. So I'm wondering with a few tweaks with different elements like fleshing different characters out more and so on, the recent specials would actually land much better with people. Granted the specials are slap bang in the middle of Doctor Who trying to restart again. Hard to do something new while trying to acknowledge what came before. If it wasn't for the 60th, I honestly believe Jodie would have regenerated to striaght to Ncuti possibly. Who knows. So what do you guys think?

    Completely agree re the Splice and the Mundy thing. Splice surely grew up/lives in a battlefield... Does she not understand what happens to people when they die here re holograms? It felt so bizarre and took out any sense of loss or empathy we should have felt. I hated the Mundy love story bit- it was so unnecessary, and I really hate the female characters = romance Moffat thing. She's a soldier, I think she knows how to prioritise survival? All of these characters actions were just so unrealistic- really took me out of it

    This episode took me by surprise. I was not expecting it to be any good after that hot garbage excuse of an excuse last week to do a musical that made 0 sense. This just proves when Moffat has 0 pressure on his shoulders & loads of time he writes master pieces. @@djdee6386 I dont think that explains why they would kill off their soldiers or why thatd be cost effective. I guess its that theyre intentionally killing off soldiers so that it APPEARS like theres a real war happening and therefore the home state keep buying weapons but i think the way it presented all this through the story just raised a lot of questions about it that i dont think it ever had time to cover.

    • @DanyTheMe
      @DanyTheMe Месяц назад +1

      A certain amount of casualties is required to keep conflicts ongoing and ensure that no one side of a war gains an advantage big enough to actually win a war. Therefore ensuring perpetual warfare trough the universe.
      Real world weapons manufacturers do this, they just don't have killer "med" bots so instead they just use their wealth and power to lobby for instability and conflict in designated areas so they always have a means of profits, even if it means maintaining a steady death toll.
      In the show, in order to justify the killings, the company defines most injuries as "lethal" so they can get away with terminating an optimal amount of people. Keep in mind this is in the future and in space so the population is big enough that they won't run out of customers.

    I think it was a poor mans version of The Doctors Daughter. Watched the first three back-to-back. Didn't like the extremely forced exposition, I get that there are trying to introduce it to a new audience, but be a little more subtle with it. I think the relationship between the Doctor and the companion feels forced for the amount of time they've known each other. And can they tone the camp down just a little bit? I've got a Doctor cries or needs a hug counter going for this season.

    As soon as I saw Tension 10/10 Character 3/10 in the thumbnail, I knew we were going to agree on a lot of things.
    ruclips.net/video/57r42PMo1CU/видео.htmlsi=W5kTCyFOfeL3zZEf
    It used to be a show built in real human problems with a sci-fi flare. Now it feels like theyre in a tv show. They pop into an episode, the event happens, we dont feel any push and pull or change.
    I hate to compare it all to Chibnall Era, because Donna/Ruby are certainly more LIVELY, but Rosa was the episode where everyone was praising how good the historical stuff was and I fundamentally agreed ... and I had a glass shatter moment where I realised "wheres the character development?" take anything that isnt the big tense distraction, take any actual character moment, and whats it developing? Graham is a bus driver, okay so what? All the good stuff is Rosas story because thats copy/pasted from an already well told real world story.
    and then that flat characterisation continued with flat characters for the next 3 seasons.
    I've been complaining about that since Wild Blue Yonder actually, because its great at tension and mystery, and its great to have Tennant/Tate back, and it feels awfully nitpicky to say "its much better but not great"
    But Wild Blue Yonder and this, both big bottle episodes with great tension. And when its all said and done why does it matter if Donna/Ruby almost dies if NOT for hanging on the assumption the audience ALREADY cares about their relationship. Theyre not doing the legwork to use these concepts to actually develop the characters investement in each other NOW.
    Best in a while, but like you guys are saying, wheres the depth? It felt like if s1-4 did anything well ... if ANYTHING did anything well, apart from chibnall era because flat characters, it was the dynamics between doctor and companion. Its no surprise that s7 and s11 are some of the weakest stuff and theyre the same episodes where the dynamics seem to be entirely "obligation, theyre there because theyre there."

      I agree, this new doctor's character makes perfect sense to me if you track his trajectory all the way back to the Capaldi era.
      This doctor is more willing to express his feelings, admit when he doesn't know how to solve something, inform his companions of the actual risk before sweeping them of their feet. It literally feels exactly like what Capaldi and Jodie's doctors were working towards in terms of their development.
