  • Catch, Kill, Clean, Cook, Eat - Blacktip Shark.
So finally got around to doing a Shark catch and cook. It is going to be a windy weekend, so figured it was a good time to do a bit more complex catch and cook. Although we have quite a few types of Sharks, the Blacktip seemed to be the best option since there is no size limit, they taste good, and I have a good system to catch them. I headed out to my backcountry spot and drifted a live Pinfish under a float. It didn't take long to catch a nice 38" Blacktip. When keeping a Shark, you want to make sure you take the extra steps required to ensure that the meat does not go bad. Because Sharks purge their urine (urea) through their skin, you have to make sure you quickly bleed them out, remove the internal organs especially the urinary tract, and make sure the carcass is put on ice immediately. At that point, you have a wide variety of options in regards to preparation.
For todays video and because of the size of the Shark, I decided to do a couple of different recipes. For tonight, I was going to marinade the Shark steaks. I did one in a Italian salad dressing marinade and the other in a Asian Thai style. They both came out amazing.
Tomorrow, I am going to be smoking the rest and making some Shark dip.

For all of you saying sharks are an endangered species I feel you may have forgotten much of your biology class... "Shark" isn't a species. There are hundreds of species of sharks in Florida alone. Blacktip sharks like this one are group one sharks and have no size limit. You can catch and keep 1 a day per angler or a max of 2 per boat even if there are more than 2 people. Sharks that are endangered would be under group 4 and are illegal to harvest from Florida waters. This includes things like Tiger Sharks, Whale Sharks, Smooth Hammerhead Sharks, etc. Black Tip sharks a very common to Florida waters and also account for a sizeable number of shark attacks (thankfully mostly aren't serious injuries).
The following link can provide you with more info on shark fishing regulations in Florida per Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation.

Great video! And for those of you out there who think it looked inhumane, you have probably never tried killing a shark while in a kayak before! I lived in the Keys for many years, and love to eat the occasional shark. Bonnet Head are my favorites. They don't die easily, and we're trying to not lose a finger or toe in the process. Nice work, utilizing everything you keep. You always only keep what you eat or need for bait. So, great catch and keep it up!

sounds like an excuse to me. yes, it's difficult to do it on a kayak, but that's not really a reason to shove a tiny knife into it's head and not kill it right away. would've been easier with an ice pick or something similar to that, would've been quicker and easier for both the shark and the person.

Fl Yak Fisher Just like catfish, if you bleed it, it gets rid of a lot of the fishiness and odd flavors. shark meat also has its own distinctive flavor due to the fact that they basically per through their skin. The older sharks also have a stronger flavor
