    Thank you so much for this
    My mom use to work at dreamworks as a manager and not on the art side but more on the managing side
    I still remember wooing over the campus and loved every time i got sick and my mom would take me
    Sometimes I would purposely stand out in the rain and hide in my room so I could get sick and go there
    This place was amazing and that’s when I wanted to become a story board artist
    My first ever movie I saw was Kung Fu Panda and I cry every time I watch the HTTYD movies with my mom
    Thank you for giving me the memories

    Hi, Sir! I've been watching some of your tutorials, after starting to learn the basics of animation in school, and I had to go back and check out your entire channel. And I can't tell you how much I appreciate this video. I love how you authentically share your experience, and taking the edge off the pressure, basically. It's not only inspiring, but this transparency motivates me and helps me to see that I might have a place somewhere doing what I love someday. And maybe someday not too far from now. Thank you so much for that.

    What you are doing is great because you also find time to be creative on your own. Many people in animation forget to do that (and I admit I was one of them) but it's important to keep doing your own stuff. Keep posting.

    Really enjoyed the insight at 6:58 about looking at it from the outside and the feeling of everyone else being on some unattainable level of skill or talent that I'm not worthy of. That's always been the most intimidating thing for me personally. But once I got over that mental hurdle, I realized that we're all equipped with the same brains and ability to learn. It almost immediately leveled the playing field in my mind, and I really started to feel like anything was possible with two things: time and dedication. Don't get tied down by comparing yourself to Pixar, ILM, or not being "good enough" cause we all started somewhere.

    Hey, I just watched your whole story from the intro to this video, and that what awesome, I love your spirit and determination ! Dreamworks seems like an awesome place (though I'm more a Pixar guy myself :))
    I feel like there are already so many tutorials out there, but one thing I'd like to see more is shot analysis. Taking a shot from an animated movie and going through what makes it so great. There is so much to learn from the best, but at a low experience level I know I'm missing so much of it.
    Anyway, whatever you do, I'm looking forward to your future videos !

    • @SirWade
      @SirWade  6 лет назад

      That's awesome!! Thanks for watching!! :D And I can't blame you, Pixar is great! That's actually a really fun idea- and a great point! I actually learned so much just from hearing other animators discuss what worked so well in other shots frame by frame. Adding that to my list immediately!!

    I just binge watched all your videos and I wish I had this as I was going through college which was almost 13 years ago.... I graduated with a degree in media arts and animation from the art institute international Minnesota, after I graduated I thought I had all the tools that would land me a job in the field. but I didn't want any old job I wanted to work on movies. the advice you gave about animation mentor I am truly considering, it probably would be a great help sadly I didn't even know it existed. there is allot that contributed to me not obtaining a job but in all honestly I lost my path. (I will actually be starting a vlog about this) but I still have the same passion for animation, story, and cinematography. although I am very rusty and need to catch up (which I am doing through pluralsight) all the info is amazing it definitely helped me start to rethink how I want to move forward there really should be more of this out there. thank you man

    Hi Wade, These videos are great. Very well authored. Nice work. I would though, caution some to understand that becoming an animator at a large studio is similar to becoming a unicorn. Very very hard. And for most, if they don't love movies more than life, then unsustainable. I did the training thing at DW, and I was really pleasantly surprised to come across some of your videos. Fun to watch and look at the campus. Hasn't changed too much. Your office isn't too far off from where I sat during Bee Movie. Great content you provide! I can tell your so passionate about animation. One thing, I will tell people though if asked, is being in animation isn't too far off from being involved in the circus. Now-a-days, lots of traveling. Yes, there are the few that stay year after year in the studio, although that is unusual. Keep up the great work. Really fun to watch your content. Training has come so far since I was there! And yes, I see this vid is several years old. Hope to see more vids in the next studio your at:)

    But well...here is the thimg. I have no idea what I want to do, like no idea t all. But I´ve been drawing since I can remember. So I´d love it if you could do like a general video abt animation: what programs you need to use, if you need to learn to use them by yourself or if they teach you in college, if you need to know abt physics or maths and again how you are supposed to know them, what carrer you have to pursue, the materials you need, the Jobs you can apply to and how much you get paid… I don´t know, just some kind of summary. I know this is very basic and boring, sorry. Anyway, great videos, keep up the good work

You ever run into a Kathy Baur or Raymond Zibach? That's great advice. I got an interview for one of my cousins but he didn't even have complete drawings. I was bummed for him. I know you probably don't want an answer from someone who isn't very experienced(I'm 14 and work on my dad's Computer) but I made the same experience when I began . I began 2-3 years ago with blender at it was like you describe but after a few months my dad gave me a tutorial with many excercises which are very good described and at the beginning very easy . After a few time you can use the things you learn use by yourself. Now I work with maya and sometimes it's a bit difficult but it's working . And what you can do too is to practice drawing and writing stories for me that's very funny and helpful too. I know it' s very depressing to see all the good people arround you but probably they all began like you

      ohnezahnfan 272 lol I can try sometime but idk i don’t really think about that stuff. And thanks for the help.

    • @SirWade
      @SirWade  6 лет назад +39

      Yeah it's tough- ohnezahnfan 272 has some good points! You're both super young- the fact you're even trying to start at your ages is awesome, and if you can keep going and practicing- keep challenging yourselves to learn and grow, you'll be WAY better than most people when you get to an age where other people are just starting out on their journeys. The most important thing to remember is that you should be having fun and making things YOU enjoy and are passionate about, things that make you exciting to be creating. And remember that this will take time. LOTS of time. Like, YEARS. You have to be patient, which is why you should just spend that time just trying to make thing you enjoy, and then you won't feel like "wow this is taking sooo long"- you'll just think "Wow I've been making cool stuff for sooo long. I've gotten so much better. I'm glad I started when I did, because look at all the cool stuff I'm able to do! I wonder what I can try next!" Seek out tutorials, lessons, mentors, friends, people who do what you hope to do- ask them how they learned, how they started out- ask to see what they did when they were at your stage. Because it IS hard to see people making such amazing content when you can't do that level of stuff. I still have to deal with that, we all do and it never goes away. There will always be people better than you, but there will always be people worse- people you can help to grow, just as you'd like someone to help you grow! Compare yourself today ONLY to yourself yesterday, or last week, or last year. Animation is hard! But it's an exciting challenge, and if you find along the way you love something else even more- explore it! Try it out! Taste everything and see what you gravitate towards! You both are growing up in an incredible time of content creation, with 2D/3D/AR/VR, and whatever ELSE is going to happen in the next 10 years before you're even really looking for a job to pay bills and all that nonsense! You've got PLENTY of time. Some people don't even start until they're like 50 or 60, so don't even sweat it if you haven't figured it out in 10 years- seriously.

    Hi! I loved this video, it was super helpful for getting a better understanding of what working at dreamworks and being in the animation industry is like. I’m going into my junior year of high school and only recently decided that I want to pursue animation as a career. However, besides drawing and designing for years, I have zero experience in animation haha. I’m currently working on saving up for a computer to get started with animations but besides experience I was wondering what advice you’d have for someone who has absolutely no idea what they’re doing. What colleges would you recommend (I had my heart set on SCAD for a while but I’ve heard so many mixed reviews that I’m debating if it’s the right choice); what computers, tablets, and programs are best for beginners like me? What are some things I can start doing now that will help me reach my goal of working at dreamworks? Sorry for the long comment, thank you for your time!!

    hello, thanks for posting this video! So I have been drawing for a long time now and I've dabbed in different styles of art as much as I can and watched other's so I can learn from. I graduated with my BA in a completely different field. What advice do you give to someone who did not go to school for art? how do you build it if going to Cal Arts or another school isn't an option at this time. I've watched a lot of videos but now I'm stumped a bit.

    Thank you for this! This is my dream job! I've always been a huge Dreamworks fan since I was very little! When I was 3 I had a Shrek Birthday Party, I watched the Shrek movies almost every day over and over and over! I was born in 2002, and Spirit was made that year! My grandma got me the movie one Christmas because I liked horses. I have a whole Spirit: Stallion Of The Cimarron collection and How To Train Your Dragon collection! Those are my two favorite animated movies ever! I really want Dreamworks to be big like Disney! I've always been interested in how movies are made and now that I am older I know what I want to do! Animate and make movies! And I want to do Dreamworks because it's always been my favorite movie company and I love all of their movies! I am already imagining some ideas in my head! It would be cool if Dreamworks made a movie about Thylacines! They are an extinct animal from Australia! I am almost 17! How old do you have to be and where can I start! What classes should I take in college? People are going to hate me for this, but I like Dreamworks a lot more than Disney! It would be cool if Dreamworks had its own theme park like Disney. I mean, it is combined with universal kind of, but I want Dreamworks to have its own parks still!

    Nice video man! One question, I applied to the artist development program, I’m an animator from Colombia, do you think the people in charge to select allow people from outside US to get engaged on the program, or could be difficult? Thanks!

    Hey Sir Wade .. I hope you're doing well ..
    I'd like to ask you about something .. i hope you'll have the time to answer it ..
    the thing is I know about about software and pipeline in the 3D industry .. but I have a problem with the Art area of my work .. I have rarely drawn by hand in my life .. and I was hoping that you might know of some school preferably in Canada that teaches art foundation .. or something similar that doesn't require ielts or whatever ??
    I have finished BSc in Computer Science .. so i'm not an artist by default ..
    ____________
    btw thank you for everything .. your videos are very useful .. from plugins .. to info i have forgotten because of lack of work (I know .. not good .. but there are no jobs in the fields of 3D in my country) .. to working in an actual animation studio .. etc .. very useful .. keep going and good luck
    thanks a lot my friend

    This is such a great channel. I am so glad I found it.!
    I am an AM student myself, currently in class. And I am really enjoying myself as an animator, and I feel very lucky that I chose animation as my career.
    I have a quick question though. I live in Egypt. Do you think if I have a good enough demoreel and enough experience, would a studio like DreamWorks be interested in looking at my reel and consider hiring me and going through the trouble of actually hiring someone who is not in the country and get him to the country?
    Would I even have a chance (Especially with a good demoreel)? Or is it almost impossible?
    Again I love your channel and I will definitely watch all your videos :)
    Keep it up!

      Hey! I saw your Shamballa shot update! Really nice work so far!! Can't wait to see what it looks like with the eyes added in and everything :) And that's a truly great question. I don't have a really well-informed answer for you, but from what I've learned: If you reel is so good that it's decided that they NEED to have you on the team, it will happen. But it takes a lot to convince the studio the investment is worth it, so it IS possible, and DreamWorks has a ton of animators and artists that aren't from the US. But it's not easy, and it's probably very unlikely without some experience at other studios- I can't say for sure but I doubt a junior animator would get brought in from outside the US without some real experience first. I want to do a video on that though, and interview some recruiters and international artists who have made it in!

      @kareemismael6153 6 лет назад

      Sir Wade Neistadt Thanks for the great reply :) (and for the comment about my shot!) You make a lot of sense actually.
      If you make that video with the recruiters and International animators who made it to the studio that would be absolutely fantastic and so important.
      Thank you for the reply and for the great content you have here :)

    So I am a senior, I will graduate this month or so. And well I am in a special ed class with some disabilities students. I don't have a disability, but I do have anxiety and hard to understand some of the ideas when someone ask me some information or questions. I am also an artist myself. I mostly draw cartoons and my characters I created back in 2018. But I do have a question if that is okay with you. Do you have to get an diploma or apply to accept in DreamWorks Studios? Or what. Sorry if I asked that question, it's just that I'm 19 and I been wanted to apply a job in the Dreamworks but I just don't know what or where to start.
