@ti_caliss It can actually hurt it more by locking in moisture. They can and do rot inside a paint shell because paint will not creep in deep enough However it can be treated with a number of good products out there first to neutralize the rust first and then paint. It's a lot of work and I have done it , i then put oil over the top of all that. I am currently driving an 02 that I had great success with doing this process, the rust has completely stopped and it's been 5 years. It's also important to do the inside of the frame or it will all be done for nothing. Like I said they rot from the inside out more than the outside in. Unfortunately this frame does not have much time left.
If it were me, I’d give that whole underside a quick once over with a rust wheel on a small hand grinder, take off all the major flaking and loose rust, convert the whole frame with a rust converter and coat it with an oil coating. As is I only see it last a year or two before it starts to actually rot from the inside out. Rust wheel, converter and coating will help that thing last 5+ years
Actually I wouldn’t bother doing that. I would buy a 6 pack of POR-15 and sure knock the heavy stuff off. But POR-15 likes a toothy surface. Once it’s on there it’s staying. POR-15 took a 2000 hour salt spray test with no problems. It also bonds to metal forming a glossy black coating that will laugh off age. As soon as I buy out my 2022 Tacoma off its lease that’s what I’m doing with it. I’m hitting the welds for sure along with the areas I know they get rusty. Toyota went to a C channel frame making it easy to protect it. After I POR-15 it I’ll consider laying rustolium gloss black over that. That way I know my truck will last long enough to hit 250,000 miles. If you do that you’ll be replacing the drivetrain before you need be concerned about rot
I like how you have your own style and have made content that doesn't mimic others. It's just you working on what you are passionate about. I have subscribed. Keep up the good work.
You got a real "deal" on that Runner. I'd wire wheel/sand the frame/rear axle and paint/Fluid film it, but before go around with a small hammer and bag all over the frame. loosen the rust on inside and take a coat hanger and bend a little hook on the end and stick it in any holes on bottom of frame and dig around some and get a lot of the inside rust out, you'll probably be amazed how much comes out!
You should clean that frame off. Then do some rust converter then seal it with stuff like Fluid Film, CRC, cosmoline, por-15 etc. It wont survive much more winters.
Machillo , “Pura Vida” Awesome the way you saved that beautiful truck , all you have to be , is passionate for things I have one of those, good trucks fir 23years still going strong, thank you I lear a lot.
Nice gift you got, you will fall in love with the truck if you start driving it regularly, then you will not want to drive another car. 3rd Gen 4runners are keepers, in any condition.
Love your 4Runner. I had one over 355,000 miles and finally hit my neighbor and it was total lost. Use mental brush to clean your rusty cables and nuts.
I've got a suggestion. I own one of these 4runners and i used to have the same wheels as you. If you ever want to clean the wheels, use oven cleaner and a brush with water!
Recheck those tires. If it's been sitting outside for those 5 years, the dry rot is probably an issue and they'll not withstand too much stress while driving, especially highway speeds. Great find and worth keeping, those engines are amazingly resilient!
I dont know if its the same with 4Runners, but Tundras from the same years have a problem with the ball joints and its pretty important to replace them with OEM Toyota parts becasue the aftermarket ones seems to fail more often than not. Great find! Also I think the Pence coins are from the UK.
Hello. Trax N Tires You got a good vehicle there, it cleaned up very nice, you know your stuff. But I would just like to give you an advice, I hope you don't mind. In the future, when ever you are tightening control arms, upper or lower cradles It's a good idea to have the vehicle on its suspension, holding the weight of the vehicle before fully tightening them, The vehicle should be resting on all four tires, this will eliminate excessive torque on the bushing rubber, and they would last a lot longer. When the suspension is all the way down and these components are tighten, they put extra ringing torque on the bushings rubber, and they don't last. I just thought I would share this little trick with you, and those who watch your videos. Thanks for sharing your videos. Cool, enjoy the Toyota. bye.
Control arm bushing should be tightened when sitting on the ground. At least that’s what I’ve always been told.... The gas filler door on my wife’s car was locked via a little electric motor when you locked the car. The motor went bad with the filler door locked. It was a pain in the rear but I finally got it open and removed the electric lock....
I have an 01 limited 4runner with 186k miles and its a great car. I just finished up fixing a bunch of the front end looseness and it drives like a new truck. Also, I noticed in the last few vides under the hood near the battery ground there is a loose wire attached to the chassis, that's the body ground so make sure you connect that back up to the negative terminal!
Have you ever ran.,or used zinc powder additives in A bottle to mix into your motor oil. A long with some STA-BIL fuel treatment mix blended half octane booster and half of the STA-BIL fuel treatment and injector cleaner together as A fuel complete system cleaner products for fall and winter season uses.,or even as A all season use to.
Melt down the coins to reinforce the underbody. Third Gen is a great size before everything became oversized. If only this one had been powder coated underneath when it was new.
Going to safety my 2000 here this week…. The underside is probably one of the best I’ve seen up here in Ontario… wondering if you had any trouble getting your safety. 🇨🇦☮️🇨🇦
Thank you so much for the update. I've been waiting to see more of this 4Runner. Despite the rust on the underside, it still looks mostly solid (right?). Would POR-15 help out? For the lower control arms, I read that people highly recommend buying genuine Toyota parts over aftermarket (not sure how true that is or if its just rumors over the world wide web). Thanks for the educational entertainment and keep up the great work!
Replace the lower ball joints with OEM Toyota parts, might as well do the uppers while you're at it. Replace the radiator unless you can prove it's less than 5 years old.
ball joint r real issues for heavy vehicle.....it jut pops out...if u feel a strange hardness or sound in ur steering..thn remm time to change the ball joints
Here in NZ I have a 96 Surf, (Basically an up speced 4Runner), I notice with most of the U Tube videos on these cars the North American ones seem be suffering from lots of surface rust underneath and some with structural rust in the frames (Chassis). We don't use salt on the roads here, is that why we don't see this problem nearly so much on our cars? Or were the Surfs just better protected during manufacture?
@johndcorcoran6550 its definitely due to salt, the coating on the Toyota frames wasn't great, but ive noticed many american 4runners are much better off underneath than the ones we have up here in Canada land
Fellow 3rd gen 4runner owner. Go ahead and replace the timing belt, radiator and LBJs. These have a terrible time with LBJs and they should be replaced every 80-100 thousand miles. And ALWAYS buy OEM.
That frame is toast. Unfortunately that's the story of these 4Runners in northern environments where salt is laid. Hate to say it, but that's a part out vehicle.
@michaelwood4158 I have seen a lot worse, I'm being optimistic that there may be some solid steel left and the oil would stop any further degrading but you might be right could be toast 😊
Hello friend, I am watching your channel from Iran. You make really interesting videos. I think you need a microphone because the sound of the video is not good at all.
Mate you are filming a nice content but please get a good a good Camera, Microphone , Editor and Cameramen and you`ll be on top of the charts. and your effort has already showed it self you have 100k views on a terrible quality videos keep improving mate Good Luck with it.
That frame is almost done paint it asap otherwise it wouldnt last our winter
I'm not sure paint is going to last long on that one. I would go with the crone oil or linseed, you going to need something that creeps and stays put.
@@paulcoenen7918 its still gonna help a bit at least.
@ti_caliss

Fluid film. It’s worth the trouble.
@brentfoster9138
I have heard good things about it but will it creep in enough or good for just a top coat?
If it were me, I’d give that whole underside a quick once over with a rust wheel on a small hand grinder, take off all the major flaking and loose rust, convert the whole frame with a rust converter and coat it with an oil coating. Keep an eye on that frame. It needs to be cleaned and coated
I like how you have your own style and have made content that doesn't mimic others. It's just you working on what you are passionate about. I have subscribed. Keep up the good work.

I'd be spraying the underneath in chassis rails etc with a good quality rust inhibitor solution. All the best from the UK.
You should clean that frame off. Then do some rust converter then seal it with stuff like Fluid Film, CRC, cosmoline, por-15 etc. It wont survive much more winters.

To say I’m jealous of your “free” 4Runner would be a bit of an understatement
Not bad for a free 4runner. That beast is going to last for years and years.
I'm from PNG 🇵🇬 and love 4 runners, love how you got this SUV running again...
I repainted my center caps too! Makes a big difference!

She looks great! I hope it passes inspection. Good luck and I look forward to the next upload
A little bar and chain oil sprayed on the under carriage and frame will save it.
Try some PN Blaster Surface Shield on that rust. You might have to reapply it annually but it'll slow down the corrosion process.
That frame needs a clean a good go over with a wire brush and a dousing with Lanoguard
I'm so impressed. This truck just needs a little caring. Nice truck.

So awesome that you're a mechanic!!! ..and that people are offering advice. I've seen 3rd Gen for 6k...In this condition?? I HOPE!
Kbs coating can stop the rust and prevent future rust great stuff
Can you scan for error codes? I see the check engine light on.
Melt down the coins to reinforce the underbody. Third Gen is a great size before everything became oversized. If only this one had been powder coated underneath when it was new.
When I bought my 4runner, the first thing I did was have it undercoated. I'm very glad I did. 😆
Your rear drag link used to be called a track bar or Panhard bar.
Love everything about this

Sweet gift bro....Toyota Quality❤
Buen Rescate dela camioneta gracias por el video desde República Dominicana
Bravo young sir job well done...
Those center caps look good in black against the silver rims.
imo, the rims have to be washed and detailed a little bit to look good with the silver caps, rn they look ok.
Heyyy grettings , one of that coins are from Costa Rica 👌🏿👌🏿👌🏿👌🏿
One of the best generations.
OMG! LOOKS SO NICE!

cool dude! cool project! cool suv
Wow. Great job. wish to have one here for FREE too🤣
Hi, Awesome videos! Boslla sponsorship plan for the LED Headlights Bulbs. Are you interested in it?
Yes, you can message me.
You should make a rear bumper and get the underside coated

such a nice vehicle
Great work, what about the underneath rust
Freebie, and it will turn out to be the best truck you'll ever own.
Any money you put into this truck is money in the bank!
Still Check Enging light and Battery/Alternator lights on... Have you worked on those?
Cool project.
Those wheels need to be blasted and sprayed along with the caps. They will look really nice.
Change the suspension, rims & remove side footrest & plugs.
A small lift and all terrains would look good
I agree
Great video - did you find any other hidden treasure in your truck, while you were cleaning it.
Not yet lol, I’ll have to check under the seats lol.
Great stuff man!
How did you acquire the 4Runner? That is, even know it existed and its location?
Use dry ice / sandblasting under the car then spray some rust inhibitor and this car will outlive all of us.
will that really prolong the life of the frame?
The coins are from England 10p coins 👍🇬🇧
definitely worth the subscribe 👍🏻
Part of the frame is rust-shot through - the part behind the rear differential.
Lol
dudes clock still works!!!
You need to blast that under carriage and frame, recoat it, otherwise this 4Runner is a gonner.
I'm guessing they parked it because the frame is rotted

What happened to the abandoned 1966 Bronco😢

Your car very good
Dude please let thing is way too nice please go through and pull everything apart and paint that frame
Why did the original owners park it?
he mentions why in the first video he made about it

Let me know if you want to sell it, I will buy asap, Scarborough, ON
Hello. Do you have interest in testing our Toyota 4 Runner product?
I have a 4runner. What product do you offer?

Or other interior car accessories, if you're interested, I can show you the link.@@duramaxman8242
I thought they are called trailing arms?
To order those parts you have to ask for “Rear Lower Control Arm”
❤❤❤Yes
Give it a undercarriage power wash and then a through Grease and Spray....u can then Silicone/Lithium Spray all rubbers and mental after
it needs more than a power wash lol
Costa Rica 🙏🏼💯💯💯
