  • PLEASE NOTE- this video starts out as a video about Whitney Houston but quickly turns into a discussion about the relevance of the vocal fach system. I felt the need to still post it because these are good thoughts about how we ‘rate’ a singers skill /technique or the beauty of their voice. To us, Whitney created a standard, but some would argue that she was a mezzo while others would say light coloratura soprano. I get lots of questions about vocal fach so i hope this provides some clarity in how to navigate the discussion.
I left her name in the title because i think it’s great that she, who would have done well in any genre, could inspire such discussion. Thank you for watching!!!

It feels SO GOOD to be watching you again! Welcome back! I really think that your knowledge fills in the gap I think a lot of the online vocal community is misunderstanding. A modern adaptation to the understanding of vocal fach will help us understand how classical and pop singing differ and how they are the same. Love that you both draw that distinction! You are the OG and we love you!

I’d have to disagree about Patti Labelle. He may not be a fan of her as a vocalist; but In her prime, her technique was impeccable. She literally had no breaks in her voice. It’s seamless from chest to middle to head(just like Streisand, Aretha, and Karen Clark), and the amazing thing is she maintains power in her upper register. It’s not too heady unlike the others. Although Whitney was a great singer she pushed and pushed her chest voice to the limit, in the way Leandria or Aguilera does. That’s not great technique and I know you know this Dilessa. But again, Whitney is probably the greatest singer ever. I’m Just speaking about technique.

The point is that there is a correct way of singing and I think that’s what Dileesa was trying to say! Because if you sing your whole career in a disconnected falsetto or very heavy chest voice (pushing the chest voice up), it’s part of the artistry and style BUT it will cause damage with time! So it’s not about beauty and artistry, it is about technique and longevity! Because the correct way of singing doesn’t change in different human bodies, the vocal tract is the same in all humans! I’ll be watching the vocal analysis on Whitney’s voice, she’s my idol! Love you Dileesa!

I thought her mother stated she was a classically trained Spinto.

I think this is really interesting, but like, we only heard about 12 seconds worth of Whitney conversation. Not trying to be rude, but that left me feeling cheated.

Whitney was a full lyric coloratura. I still think she was a lyric in 2012 just raspy and vocal issues. She lost some of her agility and coloratura abilities but her fach was a lyric by her brightness and tone. But she was rare because she can sing as a spinto, dramatic, hell Nippy can go down to baritone. The lady just SANG.

If you talk about Bel Canto" La Stupenda" Dame Joan Sutherland is the Queen. 80's Whitney was beyond compare in pop and R&B.

My favorite vocal coach on RUclips is back!!!! Yessss!!! Not only are you extremely knowledgeable but you also possess humility which a lot of vocal experts don’t seem to have. There’s this know it all attitude that so many possess that is annoying! I enjoyed this collaboration immensely and the commentary of the other guy was so insightful as well! Love me some Whitney! Can’t wait for Part 2!
