  • @kimberlyjade4094
    @kimberlyjade4094 4 года назад +26

    I totally understand his on her point of view about her "not having good technique" (although he worded it wrong lol). Whitney had the natural intuition of a gospel/soul performer and her gift was her tone but I believe her technical prowess had A LOT to do with Cissy instilling everything she herself learned from classical technique the second she started teaching Whitney how to sing. Whitney was far too proficient in dynamic ability and had WAY too many habitual aspects to her voice for me to think she just NATURALLY knew how to do all those things from jump, that was ALL Cissy. Plus, Cissy often weaponized her skills whereas Whitney had a natural affinity. I STRONGLY believe she was Cissy's VISION of the perfect singer.
    Everything from Whitney's diction to her phrasing. Nobody is just born with a 3 octave range that is completely connected and balanced in registration, especially not a Dramatic Mezzo with THAT type of coordination and THAT type of precision. That voice maintained the same quality from bottom to top, regardless of register AND sat on the breath perfectly with full chord closure with UNMATCHED breath support. Cissy think she slick.

    Whitney for me will always be the greatest. Even in her vocal decline she had some great moments. The I look to you album was a great album. The first song she recorded was I look to you and I didn’t know my own strength in 2007. The last song recorded was million dollar bill which was in early 2009. You can hear the difference in her voice. Sounded clearer on the songs that were recorded from 2008-2009. Imagine if she stopped smoking. I miss this lady

  • @sajsays4710
    @sajsays4710 5 лет назад +13

    I LOVE these kind of discussions! I think Whitney May have started as a light lyric in her teens but her voice quickly changed into a spinto once her twenties hit for sure. She has the weight and power of a dramatic soprano but instead of a metallic/steely tone, her’s was a warm tone. That combination equals spinto. I think the voice change during the early 90’s was attributed (in my opinion) to three things. Her introduction to drug use in ‘89, her developing vocal nodules during the bodyguard tour in ‘92, and then her having Bobby Kristina in ‘93. By ‘94 her voice had a very noticeable darkening to it, as well as lowering, and decrease in range. She still had the power but she didn’t soar in her upper range like she used to. I believe this loss of range is why she turned to really showing her agility more in the later years. She used agility to kind of fill in where the wonder of her soaring high notes used to be. Honesty by ‘95 she definitely was a spinto mezzo (still had power and warmth, just a lowered range) and she stayed a mezzo from there on out. Sometimes when I listen to mid 80’s Whitney, I start to really wish things had gone differently. I wish she was still here and singing to us.

    • @Dileesa
      @Dileesa  5 лет назад +3

      SajSays this is a great summation! I’d have to agree with you!! And i especially agree that listening to her early music only shows us how much we really lost, and even though she was a huge pop starz, there was still so much potential that she didn’t realize

      Whitney was NEVER a Light Lyric.

  • @kayteeelle

    He is absolutely correct about the 4 fach thing.
    Lyric Soprano 85-86
    Spinto Soprano 87-94
    Mezzo Soprano 95-98
    Lyric Mezzo Soprano 99-04
    I don't think any other singer has had their voice tossed thru the ringer as much as Whitney's had. Everyone points the finger at the drugs and cigarettes and disregards the fact that Whitney toured EXTENSIVELY for over a decade. Imagine the jet lag with the different weather climates and time differences all while using your voice to it's full capacity. I also believe Whitney had a habit of working herself like a dog. There are quite a few performances even before the Bodyguard where it's blatantly obvious that there was immense fatigue and yet she was still pushing through it pretty hard.

    • @winette864
      @winette864 5 лет назад +2

      kayteeelle I feel like she lost her tonal quality for good in 2005 while she was trying to get sober. It was around the same time the marriage was falling apart, usually when you're trying to ditch one bad habit you tend to go even harder on another one. Remember in the 80s when Aretha kicked her cigarette habit then she packed on the pounds soon after because she replaced that vice with food? Same difference. In my opinion, While she probably couldn't carry out notes like she used to..she showed a lot of potential. She hit quite a few notes she hadn't hit in years (and no one ever gave her credit for that) , I wish she wouldn't have jumped back into music/touring so soon. It was too early in her sobriety for her to be back in the public eye. Maybe instead Whitney should've revived her movie career whilst continuing on repairing her voice. I can only imagine what the backlash did to her self esteem.

    • @kimberlyjade4094
      @kimberlyjade4094 4 года назад +1

      In My opinion, Whitney was a Dramatic Mezzo. I don't believe the Spinto thing, I honestly think Whitney's dynamic control is what have people bamboozled on that. They seem to think that "limp" quality attributes to being spinto when it's just a dynamic marking. Aside from her addiction and excessive touring I think her miscarriages also played a part in her stamina depleting. It can cause pressure on the diaphragm and she suffered 4 during her peak (92, 94, twice in 96). I wish people would acknowledge the whole scope of the type of fatigue Whitney endured when discussing her vocal decline. Drugs and Cigarettes played a part, but they weren't the ONLY culprit. Especially when you compare her to other singers who had the same vices as her for a much longer period and BARELY suffered from a vocal decline.

    • @kimberlyjade4094
      @kimberlyjade4094 4 года назад

      @Trix Sands Whitney suffered from Emphysema in her final years, not her prime.
      Chaka Khan is a was a drug user from the 70s to the mid 00s. I consider her a prime example since she STILL smokes and yet she still has her voice.
      Sarah Vaughan also smoked cigarettes and was a cocaine abuser and the only thing she suffered from was her voice becoming darker.
      Natalie Cole did crack, heroin and was a cigarette smoker.
      Phyllis Hyman did coke and smoked cigarettes from the mid 60s to the late 80s
      Not too sure whether or not Cissy has kicked her habit but I consider her one too. Freddie Mercury and Jackie Wilson are also good examples.

      @@kimberlyjade4094agree, Whitney Houston. Maybe -coloratura Dramatic Mezzo. Her and Taylor Dane were paired often as songs were written for their voices. But she definitely was a dramatic mezzo. I do think if she chose to sing in mix register instead of relying on her massive chest voice she could have been able to successfully pull off soprano roles. I do think if she did sing opera she would be similar to Grace Bumbry or who was actually a dramatic mezzo who could mix well enough to be a operatic soprano.

    The cigarettes are 90% of the damage to Whitney's actual tone of voice. Other extra curricular activities caused the loss of breath control. Bobby knocking her teeth out and her having to get dentures also altered some of her phrasing and diction. Nonetheless Diileesa you hit it on the head when you mentioned the beauty, power, and agility that only Whitney had. This is what makes her "The Voice" and when you combine that with her knowledge of her voice and how she could maneuver around obsticles or vocal challenges my goodness. That woman was and is truly "The Voice".

      Bobby knocked her teeth out? I never heard of that, I always thought it's from crack?
      While in the topic, let's stop buying into Clive Davis' propaganda. First of all, Arethas voice didn't bounce back like he says, it became ugly, nasal and thin, nothing like the stunning instrument of her youth. Whitney not only smoked cigs, but she was doing mountains of crack for years and years, Doing any stimulant once messes up your voice for few days because of how extremely drying it is. When you add the smoke that's so toxic, it rots your teeth or what it does to your throat and nose, even when snorted, it's a recipe for voice damage.
      When someone makes their instrument vulnerable with drugs and then tours excessively (probably not her fault), singing demanding songs 100% live, it's bound to fuck up your voice. Especially with her slightly chesty mix and how ard she was pushing the compromised voice, trying to give people her all.

    My two cents...I graduated with a music degree...one of the first things my vocal instructor stated was "Your voice will be at it's very best in your early 40's"....Whitney never achieved her full greatness because of her personal lifestyle habits...but you have to admit she was pure dynamite from 1988-91...Her live performances where just incredible during that time (my opinion, a powerful dramatic soprano)...we will never know how brilliant she could have been...

  • @fransheffield1531
    @fransheffield1531 5 лет назад +37

    I would looove if you did something like this for Mariah Carey! To me she is without a doubt one of the best ever. And I think giving some insight into her struggle with nodules, the effects of alcohol and overworking her voice could really help to dispel some myths about her. I think one of the most fascinating things was during her Merry Christmas II You era, where she nearly returned to her 90s voice WHILE being pregnant!
    She also seems to have these “glimmer” moments recently where you can definitely tell the voice is still there. Think Always Be My Baby 2008, Beacon Theatre 2014, most of the Sweet Sweet Fantasy Tour, My All in Singapore 2018 and even some moments during the Caution Tour.
    I really think that most of her issues actually stem from a lack of confidence (I’m sure in part due to constant negative media coverage coupled with bipolar disorder). Her entire 2014 Jamaica concert, as well as clips of her singing We Belong Together in the shower and Endless Love at home, tells me that when she’s relaxed, she can still DELIVER vocally! Delving into the mental aspect of singing could be really helpful for some.
    Especially because (for the most part) she REALLY seems to take good care of her voice! There are recordings of her doing steam therapy and she’s known for impeccable technique (probably given that her mother’s an opera singer). Idk, it just doesn’t make sense that her voice would decline so much, so quickly!

    I agree more with Dileesa on the vocal fach, but I see where he’s coming from. In my opinion she started as a Lyric Soprano (she released her first album when she was 22yo), but she quickly became a spinto Soprano ( she had the power of a dramatic but she had the lightness of a Lyric and that’s a spinto)! The only time I heard Whitney doing coloratura was when she was opening for Luther Vandross (very early in her career), she had fast runs but remember that it’s not only fast runs that turn you into a coloratura, coloratura is a very difficult singing. However in my opinion, her voice was a Lyric Soprano then Spinto Soprano and the a Lyric mezzosoprano BUT at one point, she had potencial of becoming a dramatic coloratura Soprano (remember that she never really took care of her voice so the potencial was there but it was damaged unfortunately)! There’s a singer called Tarralyn Ramsey and I think her voice is close to Whitney if she’d had only aged without no damage to her vocal chords, she’s a gospel singer, it’s worth a listen!

    I feel you on the mourning vibe. But I want to bring out that Whitney was dynamic...she also had filming to fall back on and seemed to also have an interest in artist development... I think that there was a pleasant stubbornness there, or even acceptance if you will that she was ready to move beyond the shadow of her voice...and there was promise there as well. I truly believed she could have turned it all around...it was all too soon and to much pressure for her to reemerge when she did...

    Love this video! Even tho Whitney wasn’t my favorite artist she was one of my favorite Vocalist. Like the POWER and SUPPORT she has she would always show out and show how she was THE VOICE. My only thing is I don’t think she was a coloratura soprano in her first years I think spinto fit her more because you can compare her tone and weight to Mariah (1990) as a coloratura and Whitney still has more weight and power, but wasn’t as fully agile. But was she a dramatic mezzo soprano later on? Or just a Lyric mezzo soprano?

    *Dileesa was spot on from the beginning:* *Whitney* was a *Spinto Soprano!* (A Lyric voice that can be pushed to sing Dramatic lines/vocal climaxes without strain plus they usually have some darkness to their voices). Compare her voice to other well-developed Lyric (Full-Lyric) Soprano voices eg. Celine Dion, Lara Fabian, Lisa Fischer etc.
    *Not a Coloratura:* she was impressively agile but not that agile. Plus her voice naturally had more weight & output than a Coloratura.
    *Not a Dramatic:* Her voice was powerful but not as powerful & dark eg. Patti LaBelle, Monica Naranjo etc.
    *Not a Mezzo-Soprano:* Her tessitura was that of a Soprano & bloomed as it ascended. Later, she was simply a damaged Spinto Soprano. It's a tad unfair to the Mezzo-Sopranos to put damaged Sopranos in their category. Plus Whitney didn't have the richness in her low register like a true Mezzo-Soprano.
    8:31 You can't really talk about technique in mainstream music without mentioning Whitney. Her technique was phenomenal however she also had that unbelievable natural gift & "soulfulness" that made her sound spontaneous/unrehearsed. She gave perfect vocals without sounding "too perfect" to the point of not being perceived as a vocalist who can't emote.
    "There's no amount of technique that's gonna outrun what smoking does" - Dileesa
    Completely spot on quote!
    I really admire his passion though plus he made great points about all Whitney could do even when her voice deteriorated plus her stage presence!

      From Whitney's albums from 2002-2009, you can tell the lower part of her range got a lot richer. I feel like it really started with the preachers wife era, but her lows got more rich as she aged. I still don't believe she was a mezzo. I personally don't believe your voice type can change just because your range changes. Whitney's range only changed because of her bad habits that were unnatural. Imo, she was always a spinto soprano, so I agree with you on that.

    I like most of you guys work and videos, but I don't believe Whitney was a coloratura at all, I believe Whitney was some form of spinto throughout her entire career. Firstly, coloratura voices are not just agility, they tend to lean towards smaller volume outputs, and they often have a similar, homogenous tone between head voice and chest voice as well as a natural blend between the two. Whitney's voice was very well blended, but it was not a one voice sound, like say a smaller voice type such as coloratura would have. They also have an upper extension and a higher tessitura than the average soprano voice, Whitney's voice is very comfortably in the soprano tessitura, often scaling comfortably up to C6, but not much higher without counting the odd one or two notes.

    Haven’t watched the video yet, but from what I know Whitney had a vocal surgery after which her voice has changed A LOT. It has not lowered per se, but the timbre has changed.
    I’d say she started off as a light-lyric soprano, and then in the 90s was a lyric-spinto soprano. I’m not sure if she has ever reached mezzo per se, but classifying a voice after a surgery like that is hard.

    People blame drugs but that isn't what caused her vocal decline. She smoked lots of cigarettes and had emphysema. Her autopsy report even states no damage to her vocal cords, the damage was lower in her lungs. Breath affects your sound, tone, phrasing, range, etc. With that being said, she is my all-time favorite vocalist.

  • @thatsoulkidbtj
    @thatsoulkidbtj 5 лет назад +6

    I don't agree to her ever being a Lyric. Her being a Spinto in beginning seems quite obvious. Spinto's have the lightness that Lyric Sopranos do but at times they can be pushed. She was agile but I would not agree to her being a coloratura either. I also believe that the agility she had in later years was caused by a decline in breath control. I know so many singers that can not sustain certain notes so they resort to runs and so perhaps that translates as coloratura to some people.
    Also, I would never have considered her a mezzo either. Certainly not because her voice declined so much. We have no way of knowing what her voice would have been like had her voice not declined. Rachelle Farrell is still a soprano after all these years despite her voice darkening.

    • @Dileesa

      thatsoulchild team spinto all day lol and i do understand your thoughts on her not being a mezzo. If a voice has deteriorated, it’s not really the same thing as it changing naturally , right? Did her breaks change, for ex? So i hear ya, i think these are all great thoughts

    • @badd.lil.ting88
      @badd.lil.ting88 5 лет назад

      I agree totally. I think she was always a spinto but it developed once she found her footing. If she would have taken care of the voice and maintained then we would still hear those dulcet tones. She had coloratura ability if she would have trained for that but the power is undeniable. People who can’t sustain notes usually learn how to do runs to cover up.

    • @jamaalshelton6793
      @jamaalshelton6793 5 лет назад +1

      Naw Whitney always had agility she just didn’t feel the need to do runs and Rifts every 5 seconds. The usage of runs later in her career was because of the loss of range/tone not control. No way someone with no vocal control can do what she does on that Christmas album

    Sorry for making another comment, but I heard that according to the autopsy, there was no permanent damage for her voice, but she needed rehabilitation which she never truly got before it was too late and she started even bailing on concerts to go do drugs. I was told that she could have gone back to her old sound somewhere around I guess what one could argue is a fuller lyric- spinto ish soprano. I’m not sure a voice ever changes so much from that kind of voice into an actual mezzo voice, I just think her voice was worn, the nodules, constant screaming at Bobby, drugs smoking drinking long tours without rest, poor hygiene and lifestyle etc made her voice hoarse and very inflamed which caused it to deepen in an unhealthy way. I wouldn’t really consider fach at that point since she just really need good rehabilitation. It’s like Giuseppe Di stefano, a really obvious beautiful lyric tenor instrument who always partied and smoked so much and his voice became really ragged and deep but he is still a lyric tenor instrument

    Cigarettes will drop your voice and the more you sing with this new voice it allows you to sing lower notes that were weak notes they become stronger but there is a trade off. As you can reach lower notes it hinders your ability to sing in a higher key through a song so you go to your next highest register but still can do notes in words in that light airy voice you had before smoking. Basically what was a high natural will become a falsetto or head voice and that seems like what happened to Whitney. But because she mastered her voice and worked with the changes it was a natural or smooth transition. I could be wrong but that is what it sounds like to me and Im speaking from personal experience.
