@OniEya He is Superman's compete antithesis.

Best take on their own superhuman characters
Homelander isn't exactly human, he was created in a lab and engineered to be a superhuman
No wonder why he became a villain, he grew up as a product
He's been like that his whole life too
He grew up as both product with people only loving what he could do for Vought and as an experiment not actually him. His character makes sense: he's so messed up that he wants someone to actually love him for himself, but his powers and how he was raised made him value human life on a pretty low level.
@Cardboard Calamity Imagine if K-pop stars had superpowers. They would create so much havoc like Homelander.
But instead, they direct the harm to themselves through depression and even suicides.

Homelander is in living his own nightmare. His power does not grant him happiness nor power over any one. He knows he would be lonely if he kills everyone, but still has to tolerate the fact that no one loves him, not even his woman.
Thats why he never shows his bad side to the public
He doesnt want to be hated
Just one thing, he absolutely has power over people. But thats gotta make him feel bad from time to time which is why he has the nice persona most of the time with his super pepes. He also respected Rebeccas wish to leave her and Ryan alone for a little while because he cared about Ryan's mental health. He's a multi layered villain for sure.
@@omniis_chillin5288 I dont think he means superpower wise I think he means status wise or sum like that "they love you until they dont" type power
He also acts condescending & dismissive of regular people but he seems to resent them as well for not having suffered his childhood. Even if he was once capable of empathy, his upbringing robbed him of an understanding of it.
And that is actually what makes him an effective villain. That we can understand his perspective even while recognizing it's made him a monster.
Antony Starr really steals the whole show.

This show did something that the comics didn't do. Give the characters development.
Yeah I much prefer the show than the comics I still like them but at times I'm just like chill out on the edgelord content
Mmm... in the comics the main focus and development was in the Boys basically. The supes were basically mocked with a lot of sassy references, no development from them just the “Hey, these guys are a parody of the Xmen...oh, they were molested as children by the parody of Charles Xavier...”
@@123456imagine Yeah the comic book's aim is to be a pardoy of regular comic books more than anything, everything else is secondary. The TV show is investing a lot more in character development for everyone.
I’d say the comics gave butcher great development but when it comes to the supes the show takes it
Garth Ennis was so focused on letting everyone know how much he hates superheroes that he forgot to tell a well written story with well written characters. How ironic.
That acting acting was on point. Antony Starr will forever be seen as Homelander just as people see RDJ as Tony Stark, Hugh Jackman as Wolverine

I know he is the villain but it is so sad seeing someone suffering like that. Villains with real emotions are always the best.
That's excellent writing. You can tell that he wasnt born a psychopath nor a sociopath. He was made one by severe childhood trauma. He's narcissistic, he partly doesnt understand nor cares about other's feelings but you can tell in many scenes that he cares about what others think of him, and when it comes to himself, he very clearly shows the various emotions that traumatized mind of his has, not being able to keep the facade of the enthusiastic, sarcastic, funny, perfect being he thinks he is.

It's funny how Vought act surprise that Homelander ended up being a sociopathic person. He grew up in a cold empty place. He had no mom or dad. He was never given a childhood. What were they expecting? I thought that they would know at least about a child upbringing considering how many doctors they have in that lab.
if corporate doctors and scientists are known for anything, it’s their warmth, compassion, and advocacy of ethics.

Damn, if you read the comic it is very hard to sympathise with Homelander there as he was portrayed as a complete psycho with no brain. But here you can actually see how his action could be justify sometimes. Really like this small alterations made in the show.
In the comics he wasn't inherently evil either
I wouldn’t say “justify” since what he does can not be justified in any means possible because it’s all horrible. But you do see the reason why he’s like how he is right now, it no where near gives him a pass to do what he is doing but you understand him more.
@@caior5377
He was a lot worse in the comics though like he's still a psychopath here as well but it's toned down
In the comics he was more coherent, if I may say, as a psychopath with little to no care about others, his downfall was his own stupidity (but living as the most powerful/indestructible man in the entire world I understand he didn't need to use his brain much).
Mike Morro Actually in the comics he was a pretty childish guy who at first acted like the spoiled “I can do whatever I want” brat, but after seeing the images that were sent to the Boys he became a psycho by accident. That was his breakpoint.
That moment when he is telling the cake story, it's so well acted and heartbreaking.
Homelander knows how to act. It genuinely looks like he’s about to tear up over the sentiment of his mother’s memory.

Butcher should have gone for the blanked instead of the Stillwell .
That’s actually kinda true...
That would’ve honestly done more to scare off Homelander than Stilwell really haha
He portrays that utter sadness in his eyes it makes me forget that he’s a actor and just portraying a character it’s such utter sadness that it seems so perfect this is definitely more than award worthy
Seeing baby Homelander in that room and the scientist playing peekaboo with him and Homelander laughing and playing with the blanket made me cry.
Kinda feel sorry for the dude but not enough to forget what he had done. I feel like if Homelander grew up in an actual home along with a loving family then he would've turned out to be a better person & hero.
But he won't be a perfect one. Despite living a better live, Homelander will still be tempted to use his powers for selfish needs which is normal because every human goes through these tempting moments, but it's if Homelander acts upon temptation that counts.
Kents are example bringing up Kal-el who's more powerful than Homelander. Kal-el could be dangerous too, if Vaught found him, but he came out just right because he has family.
Other heroes are also evil in this show.
I don’t “kinda” feel bad tbh, if it weren’t for that he wouldn’t be as broken as he is and humanity would likely be better off.

You see the target on the wall with the laser-burns all over it. Homelander couldn't even have a normal childhood if they let him.
But he could had a balance one
I’m sorry but baby homelander was just so adorable
😭😭
Probably the happiest moment in Homelander's childhood is when Dr Vogelbaum played peekaboo with him.
I truly feel sorry for the man, grew up being tested 24/7, without any kind of friends, family or human contact whatsoever apart from Vought's scientists.
He probably even thought he was just like everyone else, that everybody had powers just like he did, until they told him he was one of a kind.
Homelander is a psycopath and has little to no regards towards mankind, but Vought are the ones to blame for creating a monster with world-destroying powers
I often imagine an alternate universe wherein homelander was treated more humanely, pretty much superman, maybe with a bit of pride and ego, but an actual hero
this is why i can’t hate the guy like i’m sorry he’s a human with human wants and needs but has no idea how to go about getting those needs met because he was never treated as a human
Why exactly did they think it was smart to keep him in a bunker?
I guess they did so because he couldn't control his laser sight at that moment as a child
@@ComradeStrogg no, then later they must've known that at some point his behavior could get critical and theyd be unable to control him
He was something new, they didn't know how to raise superheroes but they did want him to follow orders. They stuck with "controlled environment" for their experiment
Scientists are predisposed to run tightly controlled experiments; whatever homelander's original humanity, he was still wildly powerful and novel, so a researcher would have been inclined to treat him as he would a new strain of genetically engineered mouse combined with an experimental nuclear warhead.
@@henrywedekind5754 They have a solution for that. If they follow the comics.

Perhaps,.....both?
Little homelander is sooo cute. He never had a chance. Hopefully his son fares better.
2:57 This is ACTUALLY the most darkest scene i have ever seen.
He maybe never met his mother or had any birthday cake 😥
The target on the wall and the laser marks across it is whats really heartbreaking. The compound V was already working hard within him as a baby, and the target solidifies that he was purely put here to be trained. If it was at least only for maintaining his powers then it wouldnt be so bad, but man, they really didnt care about him beyond his abilities.
2:18 I can the sadness in his eyes
This... This is pretty heartbreaking tbh.
Termination is like the most mercy thing they can do to him
As a father myself I feel disgusted at the way John was raised...he was a child for god's sake...take precautions and give him interactions and most of all love and attention. A bunch of scientist and health professionals and no one saw it coming on how much of a sociopath he could become because of the lack of human interaction? This is why corporations should not have the power or say on how to raise children
we are a product of our childhood. this show is a reminder of our human character and archetypes. It sure aint easy to relive relfect and change and go through the pain but that's all we have to do to change or just be ourselves.
Shout out to Clark Kent's parents for raising him so well.
I dont even blame Homelander the character. And Anthony Starr might be one of the greatest actors out right now.
I did not expect to find the "It was perfect" meme here, I just wanted to know Homelander's childhood.

This is being said a lot already by the rest of the comments section, but here it is. When somebody, anybody is looking at any superhuman being they are so entranced by the "super" part of them. They always fail to look at the "human" part. The part that can't always handle the mental and emotional load of their "hero" role or the high expectations of the public.

What’s so cruel about Vought here is not only did they rob Homie of his childhood, but they had the gall to make him act like they didn’t. To act like he had the childhood and family he wanted. As horrible as Homelander is, Stilwell is far more disgusting in my eyes.
