The best thing about this scene is that Homelander can use his super hearing to read a person’s heart rate and he knows deep down that that guys genuinely NOT afraid of him.
3:15 the best little touch here is Homelander taking his feet off the desk. It’s at the moment he realizes he’s not the one in charge here. Even though he tries to act tough and threatening a second later, he already revealed he’s intimidated by Stan’s authority

What i love about Giancarlo Esposito is the way he acts his menacing roles. He isn’t physically intimidating (no muscular physique), He doesn’t boast a massive intellect (while still having one), He doesn’t shout or yell or use swearwords. He simply starts off with a regular amount of respectful language and voice tone but when the situation turns, his face turns cold and then he; remains quiet/starts talking/ becomes more confrontational only when necessary. He truly is a great actor! 👏🏻
One of my favorite scenes of the series. Two absolutely GENIUS actors in character. The way Esposito played Stan in that one moment, pausing before stopping. Capturing how much of a literal genius/prodigy (and sociopath) Stan Edgar was that he was running through a million different machinations before deciding the correct way HE WANTED to crush Homeland's entire perception of the company and his place, while simultaneously capturing a brief probe into 'what side' Homelander was on with Stormfront and what, if anything, he knew about her. Just genius!
"how would your shareholders feel about that" the way stan goes silent and stares at homelander. I like to imagine because he knows about homelanders amazing hearing and how he uses it to read people, that Stan stood in silence to let homelander hear his heartbeat, to let him know that nothing about homelander, what he is, what he can do and ESPECIALLY what he is saying has any affect on him. And that makes him mighty. Giancarlo is a master of silent intimidation. Brilliant.
I think he became silent because that was what Stan feared most. Stan feared Homelander's ability to cost him money more than his ability to rip him limb from limb.
I like to think that at 1:19 Homelander is reading Stan's heartbeat and the reason his expression becomes neutral is because he realizes Stan is unphased by his empty threat.
I love how Homelander knows how his image can easily be tarnished and all of his fame can be taken away from him… it’s ultimately what made him back off
@@freedom5925 yep his pride an pursuit of glory and fame are defiantly his kryptonite now if only we had something more tangible to use against him as well.
It’s a psychological move. Right before that, Homelander says something to get a reaction out of Stan, which Stan just blankly stares at him and denies giving him said reaction.
1:19 These long moments of silently looking into each others' eyes are so utterly magnificent. Homelander thinks he has a winning hand and is waiting for Edgar to crumble. Edgar is only weighing Homelander as a man, and considering the right amount of damage to inflict on his ego.
I love how homelander walks in with the same passive threats that he uses on everyone else in Vought to grab power, but Edgar doesn’t bite, to the point where homelander had to directly threaten to leave the company to assert power over Edgar. Yet edgar is having none of it, and puts homelander in his place with no direct threats, just showing the position of power he has with full iron, not even backing down to homelander face to face. Very classy power check
- You are _not_ our most valuable asset. That would be the evil mastermind known as Heisenberg, the man who perfected the Compound V and now produces it for us with a purity rate of 99.1%.
Love the acting at 1:26, you can see him eagerly listening in, hoping to hear Edgar’s heart rate jump at the threat, only to be met with disappointment.
I am not surprised Edgar isn't scared of Homelander, Edgar loves having power over people, especially people who believe they have power themselves. Beyond anything I think Edgar enjoys standing up to Homelander in this scene.
I love the little detail of Homelander taking a step back at 3:58. Even though he could crush Stan's skull like a balloon, he's the one with the least power in the room.
Stan's probably the first person whom Homelander can't intimidate. He has no experience dealing with someone like that. And Homelander didn't only step back, he broke eye contact with Stan. He flinched first.
To be fair, the guy is literally Superman if Superman was a psychopathic narcissist. Him being around you is like having a tiger as a pet; at some point, he's gonna rip your face off if you don't keep him properly caged, which is basically what Stan did, verbally speaking.
@@TheEvilCheesecake I mean if that was the best you.could muster I think not replying at all would have served you so much better Instead of owning them it makes you look like you have some personal baggage with the term man child especially since Homelander is a man child. That’s his character.
I love how he references Disney and Edison. Two masterful businessmen that did some horrendous things but the self serving history books look back fondly on.
In the comics Homelander could sense people’s heart rates, everyone was scared of him, but Stan was an immovable object and the only person Homelander truly feared.
One slight detail I like is how at first homelander tries to show that he is in control by putting his feet on the table, but as the conversation goes on and Edgar calls him out on releasing Compound V, he flinches and takes his feet of the table. Showing he lost his edge in the conflict
I think Gus Fring is a an omnipresent personality in ever universe. He plays the same character by a different name and back story a lot of the time and I can’t get enough of it.
@@Superstarseven While he may play similar roles, we can see the range of his acting from those individual roles. It's not a backhanded compliment by any means unless you make it one.
Billy Butcher: "You just sent the most powerful man in the world to bed without his supper." Stan Edgar: "You're a fool if you believe he's the most powerful man in the world."
Wow, can't believe Gus had such a change of heart in his career path. Ventured towards new beginnings and wanted to make a difference and right his wrongs. Truly wholesome.
Stan standing up to homelander is like one of those guys who don't flinch when an elephant or gorilla charges at them. He created doubt in homelanders mind.
He knows who homelander is on the visceral level. Hes a mentally fragile and emotionally weak person. The super strong superheroe guy he portrays to the world isn't what he sees at all. He sees an immature little boy with super powers who doesn't even know who he is.
Giancarlo No matter the role. He's always the last man standing in the art of Putting people in their place. Be they indestructible suited bounty hunters... or men who can bring down buildings with a bat of the eye lashes
That intimidations that Stan gives off to Homelander knowing full well that homelander can tear him to shreds if he chose. That’s power that money or super powers can’t achieve
Brilliant comment . When people think about a powerful man , they imagine a guy with loads of money and soldiers . Gus here proves that having a strong personality is more important than having money or henchmen . The word is indeed mightier than the sword .
Giancarlo's masterful acting at 4:04 - being able to figuratively look down at someone, while simultaneously literally looking up at them. Conveying that even though he's not a "supe", he's still the one in the room with all the power.
I love this scene. I love how Stan puts Homelander in his place not by yelling or arguing, because you can't go toe to toe with Homelander's ego and temper tantrums. Instead, Stan neatly throws him off balance with a seemingly out of left field question: "What do you know about Frederick Vought?" HL still tries to be snarky and in control, but it's too late. Stan has already startled him out of his tantrum and egomania to leave him vulnerable enough to accept Stan's words as the boss finally and bluntly informs HL's place in the world and in Vought. Homelander can't pretend that he's bluffing about any of this either, because Stan's heart never moved a beat faster.
This is what happens when a anti-social egomaniac meets an actual sociopath. And I'm not trying to be edgy. There's a clear difference between not caring about others' lives and not caring about life in general.
Love how all of Giancarlo’s acting scenes could be a whole masterclass. From Breaking Bad to now The Boys. Hope he gets his flowers while he’s still alive
He respects such people because they are the only ones that are either amusing enough or relatable to the extent that even if they are enemies, he can have proper conversations with them.
@@SadGoodman0001 Because Homelander is a man-child, he knows what Stan Edgar saying is true and is afraid of that. He's smart, confident and unwavering.
@@Monster_Fan111 stan edgar isnt afraid of homelander bc he doesnt see homelander as anything other than a raging manchild and he doesnt respect immature people. and in the comics, his counterpart James was really just completely uninterested and bored by everything Homelander did

@@kyleellis1825 Yeah he probably was well aware of her real origins and well Stormfront is probably about as old as Soldier Boy (maybe even a bit older). Her wisdom/life experience is valuable. He had plans to make do/dispose of her if need be down the road
I don't follow the show, so I don't know it at full extent. But if homelander is the equivalent of Superman and has no vulnerability, then the only thing which separates him from world domination is self restraint. That is what "real power" is.
That long pause was pure art. People always underestimate the power of the pause and he executes is SO well. He may not be able to physically harm Homelander, but he can definitely effectively dissect him with his words and candor.
1:26 I love how you can see Homelander trying to detect how fast Stan's heart had increased after blackmailing him. Becoming rather disappointed after seeing it hadn't changed a bit.
1:25 I love how you can see how smug homelander is, thinking he hit Stan with the ultimate checkmate and silenced him into submission, however Stan just seemed to collect his thoughts so he could inform homelander just how wrong he was.
Homelander can canonically hear people's heartbeat and deduce what emotion they're experiencing. I like to think that 1:30 is the exact moment he realized that he doesn't scare Giancarlo Esposito. Imagine have the courage to look the most powerful man in the world in the eyes and tell him he's acting like a child
Not to mention Homelander, it’s only a matter of time before someone takes Compound V and becomes powerful enough to take you out. At which time you become not only obsolete, but a liability. It may take a while, but it inevitably WILL happen, and when it does it’ll be YOU punching YOUR OWN ticket.
Maybe I'm wrong but Homelander I think is a bit of a special case, his development was more forced than the others and people who take V typically don't even approach Homelander's strength.
4:01 The way Stan Edgar curls his lip like the Cheshire Cat while sarcastically saying “Stormfront” is hilariously terrifying. Giancarlo Esposito is a tremendously talented actor.
Not just that but it highlights, to Homelander, that he **does** value those sorts of empty public events, the attention etc meanwhile his boss is getting on with the real work.
@@RenegadeShepTheSpacer the diference between stan and butcher is that, even if butcher is not afraid, he is absolutely furious every time he sees homelander. Stan is completely indifferent which is something that really messes with homelander more than anything. He cant handle indiference.
I love how Stan sets it straight with homelander, the whole superhero part is to fund more tests with compound v. Superheroes aren’t exactly part of the equation they’re more for marketing purposes. Funny in a way to see homelanders whole perception of this company being torn to shreds to see the actual truth of vought
I don’t thinks that’s a correct analogy. It’s that homelander is a commodity. Compound V on the other hand is the proprietary substance that holds all the true unique value
@@ThatBlueSkull the problem is compound V is still random at it's core. You don't get a homelander every time you use it. I think in this scene homelander really should've just shown him he was ready to wipe the floor with the entirety of humanity on a whim because he had the power. He won't now, because he wants people to love him but the moment that is gone, he literally won't care
My favourite part is how at first he's nice to Homelander like "here pup, I'll pet you a few times, so stop chewing on the furniture", but once Homelander keeps whining he changes to "I gave you the chance to walk away with your dignity, but if you'd rather limp back to your kennel in shame, I can arrange that"
Perfectly expressed. Homelander didn't even notice the implied condescension of Stan's initial fake pleasantries. Homelander's smart, but he's gotten lazy because he's used to intimidating people. He doesn't understand how to deal with someone who isn't scared of him.
The eye contact. When homelander couldn't even look him in the eyes, it was over. Eyes shifting like a child caught with their hands in the cookie jar.

He simply starts off with a regular amount of respectful language and voice tone but when the situation turns, his face turns cold and then he; remains quiet/starts talking/ becomes more confrontational only when necessary.
He truly is a great actor! 👏🏻
He has great roles in successful shows, he's also the villain in the new Far Cry 6 game.

My personal favorite is his role as The Dentist, and this man is unsettling and threatening in every way when he wants to be.
You should watch the movie, 'Fresh'.
He also plays the role of Moff Gideon amazingly in The Mandalorian
One of my favorite scenes of the series. Two absolutely GENIUS actors in character. The way Esposito played Stan in that one moment, pausing before stopping. Capturing how much of a literal genius/prodigy (and sociopath) Stan Edgar was that he was running through a million different machinations before deciding the correct way HE WANTED to crush Homeland's entire perception of the company and his place, while simultaneously capturing a brief probe into 'what side' Homelander was on with Stormfront and what, if anything, he knew about her. Just genius!
"how would your shareholders feel about that"
the way stan goes silent and stares at homelander.
Brilliant.

@@davidvanrensburg1959 Tywin never has something with the sheer power of homelander in his face

I like to think that at 1:19 Homelander is reading Stan's heartbeat and the reason his expression becomes neutral is because he realizes Stan is unphased by his empty threat.
And combined with that staredown Stan gave Homelander after the threat. There was no emotional response at all on his face to the threat.

It’s a psychological move. Right before that, Homelander says something to get a reaction out of Stan, which Stan just blankly stares at him and denies giving him said reaction.
I've always figured during that silence Stan is trying to figure out the best way to put this man child back in his place
It was so Homelander had time to hear his heartbeat, and understand just how unintimidated Stan is.
1:19 These long moments of silently looking into each others' eyes are so utterly magnificent. Homelander thinks he has a winning hand and is waiting for Edgar to crumble. Edgar is only weighing Homelander as a man, and considering the right amount of damage to inflict on his ego.
I'm pretty sure Stan Edgar weighed up Homelander a long time ago. I think Stan was indulging his own contempt for the posturing fool.

Yet edgar is having none of it, and puts homelander in his place with no direct threats, just showing the position of power he has with full iron, not even backing down to homelander face to face.
