Kelly Clarkson - Supported Vocal Range (At her best)

  • Kelly's lower register has improved over the years, making her support consistently down to G3/G#3 nowadays, however so, below this her vocal chords lacks of the proper connection, preventing her to sing with good tonal quality and with an airy muffled sound.
    On her mixed voice, Kelly is known for her high belting and throaty-singing, which has more to do with her musical style more than with her ability to produce well-supported singing. Since her debut years Kelly has shown she's able to carry consistent support up to E5/F5, even though she starts losing resonance on the C#5/D5 area and onwards, support is present when she wants it to be. However so, around F5/F#5 her placement starts getting throaty and overly chesty, making her strain the hell up to C6 (her highest mixed note).
    On the upper register, Kelly's connection to her head voice has always been present, even before she debuted. But it wasn't until few years ago that she started showing more confidence with this area and singing with it more often. Althought she has shown good moments of support up to C6, her consisten support really ends at G#5/A5, above this she starts getting too thin, pushed and her vocal chords begin to lose connection (as can be noticed on her Bb5 at "Ave Maria" and her C6s on "Invincible").
    Legit shook while making this 'cause, even though I'm a really big fan of Kelly I wasn't expecting this level of slayage.

    It goes to show that even in her worst (2015), she still has the capability to support her upper belts (F5). She has technique, just 1. inconsistent and 2. that she lost her ease because of pregnancy (maybe) or the times she continuously got sick because of it. Hopefully the damage isn't permanent and she can bounce back!

      mErDzKy09 I think some of the problems created by being pregnant is due to the fact she had c-sections twice! Instead of me trying to explain why I think this affected her I'll copy and paste some information.
      First here's how the stomach muscles work for singing: " Push that weight up using just the muscles in your stomach. Simultaneously draw air into your lungs to their full capacity. ... The muscles you're using are your diaphragm. The best way to think about singing from your diaphragm is to think of your diaphragm muscles as a platform or tabletop."
      Now here's what happens to the stomach muscles during a c-section: " In a c-section 6-7 incisions are made throughout the process. Although the abdominal muscles themselves are not cut, the fascia which connects them is cut and this allows the doctor to pull the muscles apart in order to get to the next layer of fascia. Who knows how many extra nicks happen during c-sections and where they happen. The key is with all of the incisions/severing of the body, all of the nerves are also cut. Separating the muscles causes nerve damage, loss of blood supply, and damage to the muscle itself. Without proper retraining of these muscles it is extremely difficult to get access to the muscles. Without being able to access the muscles it is very difficult to tone them, leaving them flabby or pooch like tummy.
      I feel many women have a feeling of relief their muscles are not cut, but in reality it is kind of misleading. Although a scalpel does not cut through the rectus muscles, the fascia that is attached to them is cut, and then the muscles are separated from the fascia by pulling the apart. This causes a separation. So whether it is an incision or a tearing or pulling apart, the results seem to be basically the same. A separation of the fascia and the need to either reconnect on their own or through stitches.
      You have to remember this is one example. Some hospitals may use a cautery that burn the skin and cut through all the layers at once instead of making all of the little incisions. With this method often the muscles are also cut."
      That was a lot of information, but I think it's the reason behind some of the changes in Kellys singing!

      I don't think they're weak. She maintains her tone down to G3 consistently and can add dynamics. That's great for a lyric soprano. Plus your lower register is somewhat dictated by how high or low your speaking voice is because your lower notes often account for how low your speaking voice can go. And since Kelly's voice is higher than some, it makes sense that she isn't as comfortable lower.

    Really nice video! I guess not all the notes sound supported here but that's still fine. She's a really good singer in terms of vocal technique but sometimes she doesn't have a good recognition from the so-called "vocal coaches": in particular they said that she is throaty the half of the times (which means that she's kinda inconsistent), her head voice is very disconnected and that she is just "basic". What do you think about it?

    • @edcardenass
      @edcardenass  7 лет назад +18

      She's not inconsistent, she's often throaty because that's her singing style, she has shown moments of support more than few times, and that's what makes the difference, she does really know how to support and when, like in the performance of My Country 'Tis of Thee, she hits multiple supported E5s without struggling, she totally knows how to sing properly and that's been demostrated throughout her whole career (since she was in American Idol). Her head voice is good and well connected, since the beggining it has been always consistent, I can't see anything basic about her head voice, she starts losing resonance above G5 but that's not a bad thing, she has supported well-connected head voice up to C6.

      Considering she has a higher speaking voice, it makes sense why she isn't as comfortable lower than that. She maintains good vocal cord connection to G3, so she has good coordination. Her natural voice just doesn't allow her to have a clear sound lower than G3. Sopranos don't need to constantly sing in the lower 3rd octave to be good. The only sopranos that come to mind with lower registers that good are Natalie Weiss and Mariah Carey, but they're more the exception than the norm.

    I swear she's a Full Lyric or a Spinto Soprano. I have no idea people think she's a "light lyric", I get that she's hoarse here and there and maybe they hear thinness or vocal fry but she has a very dramatic, cutting edge to her upper range with an explosive quality/clarity..her voice is big to me, not "light". 4:49 a light lyric couldn't dream of that vocal size.

    • @Sloppyjoey1
      @Sloppyjoey1 5 лет назад

      Piano&VocalGuy89 yeah but “full lyric” is sort of a made up term. Lyric soprano and Dramatic are formal roles and for all intents and purposes a spinto is a lyric-dramatic.
      Perhaps she is just an expert belter, but she’s pulls off some dramatic belts. I think many untrained singers dominate arguments and people think a spinto is just a dramatic.
      A full lyric, as with any lyric should lack dramatic clarity/darkness/coldness and strength.. and their voice tends to shrink under compression which limits changing color.
      I just feel her voice is noticeably large and her head voice is booming, I think she’s a lyric leaning spinto, but I guess that’s why people use the term Full Soprano lol

    • @Sloppyjoey1
      @Sloppyjoey1 5 лет назад

      @@ThePianoguy89 When I say made up, I mean that it's more of an adjective than a classical voice type. I agree she's clearly not a dramatic but towards her upper belting range it gets pretty dramatic to my ear and I would actually argue that that's squillo and cuts forward like a knife. Full-Lyric and Spinto are also very close fachs so I won't beat a dead horse.
      Her belting is very throaty so maybe she's just amplifying her tone but it's hard for me to over look how much she can depart from the "lyric" sound, in my experience lyrics are more fragile

    • @Sloppyjoey1
      @Sloppyjoey1 5 лет назад

      @@ThePianoguy89 I know what full lyric and light lyric mean, I was in choir since middle school. I would actually, generally agree with your classifications as well but I can't help but ask about your vocal training because as far as I've been taught, a Spinto is just a high squillo voice that's flexible between lyric and dramatic roles. IE a hybrid voice.
      I actually think her voice is fragile from abuse and deeply logged belting which is what Whitney did. Whitney's voice was fragile too even before the drugs and I actually think they both tend to sing aggressively in the chest. I'm being petty and looking at many of her old performances and I genuinely think she was always a full-lyric and to me her voice is developing towards spinto. I actually think she uses squillo to achieve that dramatic sound.
      Pop and contemporary have really deluded classical definitions imo. Here's her covering a Whitney song. I think the similarities are there, but Kelly may be manipulating her sound for all I know.

    • @Sloppyjoey1
      @Sloppyjoey1 5 лет назад

      Piano&VocalGuy89 I didn’t say she was always a spinto, I said she was always a full lyric. Her sound can get very dramatic. I have no idea where you get the “bright and girly” from... maybe her mid range but I would say she’s got a pretty rugged and in your face voice that cuts.
      I feel like her all her pop songs conflate her actual instrument. She’s one of the strongest belters I can think of in terms of size and penetration and should’ve sang blues/gospel/rnb.
      Also, Spinto is a hybrid voice, watch this video and go to 3 min mark, this was 16 years ago, there’s no way she was just a “lyric” that is now becoming full.

    • @edcardenass
      @edcardenass  7 лет назад +26

      These F5s aren't strained/throaty, Kelly did give birth in 2014 (a year before that performance of Invincible) and she passed through a lot of voice changes caused by hormonal issues and stuff, one of these issues was the swelling of the vocal chords, which makes them less pliable, giving some kind of raspy quality sound like when you have nodules. There are other factors to take in consideration: she gained a lot of weight (which reduced her breath capacity so she has to push more air to reach higher notes) and also the swelling of the paranasal sinus (preventing her to resonate correctly at the mask area to have a more brighter sound). There's a certain throaty-quality on these specific F5s, but it's caused by these changes I already told you, she's not placing her voice on her throat, it's a little bit pushed but it's not unsupported, she's just dealing with post-pregnancy issues.

Also, you can notice the change in the weight of her voice, the F5s before-pregnancy are way more lighter. Also she said she passed through vocal issues when she was pregnant, all these issues are known and very common among pregnant women.
