    Whitney’s power and resonance in her belts was always what she was known for best but her head voice shouldn’t be forgotten. It’s really something else... and really sets her apart from the other vocalists she’s often compared with.

    • @ocandro
      @ocandro 6 лет назад +28

      I swear people hear what they want to hear. Nippy is a spinto, Mariah is a light lyric and uses different mic (also holds it further from her face), because some mics don't catch her airy tones well. Even including that, she didn't drown out Mimi, you can clearly hear them both, because Carey also has an exquisite skill in projecting and writers were smart enough to give her the higher, more piercing parts. Objectively, whether you like her tone and style, Mariah did a better job singing this particular song live, Whitney was more throaty and hoarse and her runs were very messy. Overall, they are equally good vocalists for different reasons, have different strengths and weaknesses. Mariah has better taste in runs, coloratura skills and better lows, and even without her beautiful whistle extends further up and down, while Whitney has a more even scale, best hv in the game, excellent dynamics and transitions from chest to head. As far as technical flaws go, Mariah abuses airy singing, while Whitney uses jaw vibrato, both get a bit too chesty in their belts sometimes.

      I really don't hear the "Spinto" in her voice. The early Whitney is clearly Light Lyric Soprano and the Prime Whitney Full Lyric, but real Spinto I can't hear from her.

    • @ThePianoguy89
      @ThePianoguy89 6 лет назад +22

      She was a spinto in her prime. Her voice was too dark and her volume output was too big to be a lyric.

      @ThePianoguy89 6 лет назад +12

      I wasn't talking about 1983 or very early Whitney. I'm talking about Whitney from 1987 and beyond she was in fact a spinto soprano.

    • @deadwalke9588
      @deadwalke9588 6 лет назад +7

      Sorry but I don't hear "Spinto" (which is Italian for "pushed Lyric" which in English just means Full lyric) nor do I hear a Soprano. If anything, the voice can be called a Dugazon (another name for Light Lyric Contralto) -- Light and highly lyrical, with an utmost and unusual ease in rapid, fioritura passages or as we call in pop music "Melissimas", having a small to medium size amplitude, warm but light middle voice, colorful low register, middle tessitura with a high extension (for Whitney, she extended to a C#6). Her most powerful part of her voice was the middle range -- her mid range to upper belts (Bb4 to C#5/D5), anything after that was shrill and out of place.Though I honestly believe her vocal range is mezzo-soprano and other places have concluded that she is that as well. In fact long before she died a musicologist for pop music declared her voice to be a mezzo-soprano as well. Her operatic comparison would be Cecilia Bartoli.

      deadwalke You’ve continuously made the effort to try and prove Whitney to be something other than what she clearly is. I’ve seen you on multiple occasions and throughout a span of multiple years and on various videos. Give it a fucking rest already you fucking wack ass. She was a spinto soprano in her prime, based on ACCURATE (not ignorant/biased vocal analysis). Either you don’t know her voice at all, or your purposefully attributing incorrect characteristics to her.

    Those mid belts she did around the C5 region are just unmistakeable and unrepeatable. Such richness, depth, clarity and control. Not to mention her flawless modulation of her vibrato. Up to a point I actually PREFER her 90s voice to her 80s voice in that upper-mid range... Although less technically perfect, there was just something about the high drama of her belting voice post 1990 that was truly captivating and hair-raising.

    Hi Edgar, this is a great showcase of Whitney "The Voice" Houston's powerfully refined and connected singing range! Just a bit of an advice, I know you might had some differences with the Legendary Vocalists' channel, but would you mind checking out his video of "Barbra's Magnificent Lower Register and Effortless Upper Belts" before you decide to update your Barbra video? I think that video proves that Barbra did in fact have a fairly consistent range (in modal voice) from F3 - E5/F5 at her peak, and the examples there greatly showcase Barbra's superb breath support and the colorful texture of her voice. :)

First of all Whitney’s upper chest mix was WAY too chesty especially for a once was soprano, so no she does not give Mariah nor Aretha a run for their money, Aretha has one of the best mixes if not the best mix in upper belts in pop music. Mariah was much more resonant in upper belts than Whitney & had a better mix. Like bye stick to standing Beyoncé overrated ass 😂.

      2)Whitney maintains the same huge column of sound from top to bottom.As i said,she does not drop support and resonance along the way.She beats her in terms of resonance and consistency.The technique Whitney used WORKED FOR HER!!She is THE VOICE FOR A REASON!And her technique offered her consistently support and resonance .... Do you get that?
      3)Whitney belted 5X more G5's and G#5 than Mariah!!!I am talking about live perfromances.This is the real test.Mariah had 0 G5's during the first years of her prime!How can she be better than Whitney?lol
      Let's see.
      Mariah's upper register.
      -ruclips.net/video/MZlNXH8KN3o/видео.html
      @2:27 undubbed version.Weak F5's.She fixed them later on!
      @2:34 "just look over your shoulder " F5's are not supported.!!
      @3:38 "No,no" F5's are not supported!!
      @2:44 "No" F5 is not supported.
      @2:57 Whipped,weak F5's.
      @3:17 ???? Please.
      @5:41 She fixec by adding G#5 ... .... ... ... She never hit that note live!
      @7:18 @7,20 @7:23 Super strained F#5... @7:27 same there,@7:37 super strained,small F#5!@7:44 ? lol
      @8:07 strained F#5.@9:11 strained.
      Finally, F#5's at 9:56 - at 11:03
      But at 11:39 that F#5 ...at 12:13
      As you can see and hear,She is not better than Whitney,Patti Labelle,Minica Naranjo,Aretha,SoHyang,Natalie Cole,Lisa Fischer,Lara Fabian and so many others ABOVE Eb5!
      Mariah had issues on an F5! during the first years of her prime!She was more off than on!That live performance at the Grammys was amazing,but most of her live performances were off.Weak F#5's,no G5's till 1994 and 0 G#5's!!!!
      Also,Beyonce has a superior volume control,lower register & head voice.
      Thank you.:)

      Pedro jorge Pedro jorge okay well i see you think you’re a vocal expert from watching a few performances on RUclips. 1) Whitney does not have resonance above F#5, while she retain some tonal quality & her support is questionable at times but her vibrato makes it seem like she is always supporting even when she’s not. 2) Whitney is a soprano & using a chesty mix above Eb5 & that’s can be harmful to a soprano voice. 3) Mariah strained in her debut, 1994-1996, she was FAR superior to Whitney in upper belts because she had a lot more resonance & a lot more ease as well as used a healthier mix. 3) Whitney uses a larynx vibrato, she moves her larynx up & down in prefer to create her vibrato & on top of that used her jaw as a dramatic affect which can add unnecessary jaw tension when singing. 4) Whitney lower register was horrible, her Lowe register is inaudible without a microphone compare to Mariah’s & while Mariah’s wasn’t much better it was superior to Whitney’s lower register. 5) Whitney does NOT have more resonance than Mariah. Mariah has more resonance than Whitney in the upper register. 6) Mariah has more agility, resonance, better upper belts than. Beyoncé & Whitney. Thank you 😬

      I mean, you can't really prevent your larynx from lowering as you go low. That's just how vocal anatomy works. Unless you are lowering your larynx so much that you can't resonate properly, then that's alright.

      Trần Khương Văn That's not true. Many of her notes above D5 are resonant and supported. How it's shrill when you still hear the ring in her voice? Don't you hear that ring on that Eb5 at 9:04? That's her best Eb5 ever and it's beautiful. What about her big Eb5s in A Quiet Place? It's beautiful and resonant. If this is a vocal freedom range video then how can anyone say that notes above D5 are shrill? All of her notes are still free while maintaining a M1 coordination all the way up high.

    • @eddiechan12345
      @eddiechan12345 6 лет назад +1

      ThePianoguy89 i didnt say those are not supported, but below Eb5 is where she shines the most, specially G4 - D5, above it, her chesty mixing technique sometimes made her belts sound like that.

    • @ThePianoguy89
      @ThePianoguy89 6 лет назад

      Trần Khương Văn When you say shrill it's kinda saying that it lacks vocal freedom. Her belts above Eb5 aren't shrill. Shrill is thin and harsh. Her belts aren't harsh, they're just very powerful due to the coordination she uses. Whitney has a large column of sound due to how developed her chest voice is. Her voice is creamy and it stays homogeneous to the very top of her range. Only time she sounds shrill is when she pushes. Her Eb5s, E5s, F5s, and higher are just as smooth as her C5s, C#5s, and D5s.
