I'm 74, and back in the day there were no black radio stations, or white radio stations, all music was played on every station. We got to enjoy the best of black music and white music, we were color blind, and I'm glad of it, we had the BEST of both worlds.

The Righteous Brothers were know as "Blue-eyed Soul". They are/were one of a kind. I loved this time of music as I was growing up. I'm thrilled you are finding these precious gems of music. There are thousands more.
Almost 60 years later and the young talk about its soul. That is how you know that these were special.

Without a doubt my generation had the greatest music....60's, 70's and some of the 80's Color didn't matter....great music was just that and we appreciated it then and still do. Now it's time for your generation to enjoy it.

LOL !!! I’m White and 76 years old and always loved ALL their songs. We had so many great voices back then. But, I have a confession to make. I never actually saw them perform until recently on RUclips. My first reaction was, WHAT? They’re not Black????? All these loooong years I thought they were Black. True story!
We Boomers named them Blue Eyed Soul. You couldn't turn on the radio without hearing something from the Righteous Brothers! I was a teenager all through the 60's so I loved them! A LOT!!!! ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤ I'm so happy that today's young'uns are listening to our music! We just had so much GREAT music. Music for the ages. 😂❤❤❤❤

I am approaching 74. I am so thankful to have experienced the 60s and 70s first hand AND to see young people, such as you, discovering what I consider to have been the high water mark, so far, of American music.

They weren't really brothers, but Bill Medley and Bobby Hatfield were most definitely righteous, defining and perhaps even inspiring the term "blue-eyed Soul" in the mid-'60s. Bobby Hatfield was born on August 10th, 1940 in Beaver Dam, Wisconsin, and Bill Medley was born on September 19th, the same year in Santa Ana, California. When Medley and Hatfield combined forces in 1962, they emerged from regional groups The Paramours and The Variations. In fact, they kept The Paramours billing for their first single. Thinking of a new name, the pair remembered the night they sang in front of a group of U.S. Marines. After their set, one of the Marines shouted out, "That's righteous brothers!" and the name stuck.

Never made the connection until reading the comments that they were called 'blue eyed soul' We have a local band called 'Blue Eyed Soul' so it all fits together now.

OMG the Righteous Brothers. When they came out when I was in high school in 1964. We fell in love with their voices and music. They were so awesome! I still have their vinyl record albums in my collection. I'm 74 yrs old and still play their greatest hits CD in my car. ❤❤❤❤

Whenever I find somebody that has never heard of the righteous brothers, I always recommend their video for "You've Lost That Loving Feeling"... The Black and White version, not the later version in color... I firmly believe that that is the perfect intro to this iconic duo...
They start out in shadow, and you only see their silhouettes... Then Bill (The tall one) starts singing in his rich, deep baritone voice... Then they bring the lights up and shows them... I have seen several first time reactors lose their minds when they see they are white... Then they really lose their minds in the last verse once Bobby stops singing back up and steps up to show off his own vocals... Even the ones who noticed Bobby can sing too are totally blown away... Priceless to see...
It is the ultimate introduction song, better then ANY other song they have for this purpose... Just for those revelations in that performance... Sets them up perfectly for the greatness that lies ahead in this rabbit hole... An entire arsenal of killer songs/performances...
Also, the song you heard before was "Unchained Melody"... Most people who say they don't know it recognize it once they hear it... They just didn't know the name of the song... Bill didn't think it would be a hit, so he didn't "Waste his time" with it... Bobby made it the best known, most successful cover of that song... Literally thousands of artists have recorded it. The original version was from the 1955 movie "Unchained"...

Bill knew it was a hit! Andy Williams had a script for them, so he could make a “joke.” Bill produced the studio version. I think he also played piano on it.

@@billwalker7556 Granted. As a former television cameraman, I can tell you that the microphone boom operator was ALWAYS told off for that (and sometimes fired), as we organised shots and boom placements in rehearsal. In a live show it was "wing it and cross your fingers".
@@mikeparkes7922 the first tv show was televised in 1928. I'm old but not that old. I'm talking mostly about sit com's in the 50's and 60's. I'm sure the equipment was not sophicated and you could occasionally see the boom mic.
even in old reruns shown today in those old shows you can occasionally see them. part of the nastaligia of those old shows.

You nailed it with the "soul" comment. The Righteous Brothers were the definition of "blue eyed soul" in the 1960's. In fact, even today, when musicians (and even fans) think of the term "blue-eyed soul," they think of the Righteous Brothers. There really is no comparison.
That's how they came up with there name because of their sole sounding music. The term back in the 60's was that they sounded so Righteous. The rest rest is history.

Bobby Hatfield had the preppy, 50s/60s proper white boy, highly-trained, tenor voice and Bill Medley had a pure, across the tracks, blues juke joint powerful baritone voice; they mixed together and the best of both came out in the finished product.
Bobby was a counter tenor, 4 octave range

Bill Medley did a duet with Jennifer Warnes for the soundtrack for the hit film “Dirty Dancing”, which was titled “I’ve Had The Time Of My Life”. It’s great. Bill is the only one still with us. Bobby Hatfield died in 2003 at the age of 63. He had a fatal heart attack, brought on by years of cocaine abuse. My favorite song of theirs is actually “Rock N’Rock Heaven”. Bill Medley changes the lyrics slightly in live shows-he now says BOBBY has a hell of a band! Bill’s still touring at 83!
So very sad that drug abuse takes so many extremely talented folks from us.

What nonsense. I find it interesting that those close to him family and actual friends never saw him using or under the influence, but Internet gossips have their crazy imaginations.
His cardiovascular issues were those of countless older men. The autopsy found he was a serious need of bypass surgery. The need for that surgery is caused by genetics and diet, not cocaine or anything else. As fate would have it, he had a doctor's appointment for after that tour. If it was before the tour, possibly, he would be hanging out with his grandchildren now instead of in his grave 20 years.
That cocaine found in the autopsy (if it was actually there) was described by the medical examiner as a trace amount. But, hey, you go ahead and malign a good man.
He was a fantastic singer, but I like that he was a devoted, loving husband and a loving, caring father even more.

My family is from the South, we still eat southern food, even though we live in the PNW now. Soul comes in all colors, shapes and sizes. Love your channel girl.

I grew up listening to these guys in the 60's my big sister bought all of their albums. When Bobby Hatfield died his partner Bill Medley just sadly cried and grieved. So did I. But thanks to YT the generations now can listen to all the stuff we had.

OH Britt, you have yet to hear their number one hit You've Lost That Loving Feeling which became the most played radio song in music history. It is the 1965 black and white version that is iconic. Don't make yourself suffer any longer and do a reaction to it right away. Also, you need hear their version of I Just Want To Make Love To You, probably the best panty dropping song of all time. My wife and I saw them twice in concert in the sixties in Anaheim, and Bill Medley solo at his own club in Huntington Beach in the eighties and they were all exceptional performances. These guys were the best of the best in their day.

The Righteous Bros. were the catalyst for the phrase 'blue eyed soul'.
They look so suave and handsome. Early days they played the late shows in Vegas. Frank Sinatra took a liking to them and used to bring his friends to watch the brothers after he was done performing for the night. He took them under his wing and referred to them as " the boys". The Righteous Brothers said that is how they learned to be entertainers and not just singers. They got to know the Rat Pack. A some juicy tales in Bill Medley's book about their early times in Vegas.
The term "Blue Eyed Soul" was coined to describe this Duo. They helped change the world...For the Better.

My big sister was 15 when the Righteous Brothers came along. She actually got to see them perform live at a Southern Cal teen club before they really hit it big. Donna maintained a serious crush on Bill Medley (the taller one) for many years and I was treated to their music from the little portable hi-fi in her bedroom; although it was a little muted through the wall between our rooms. If our parents weren't present, it would rock the house!
My mom loved to tell the story of their arrival on the music scene. Obviously, people just heard music on the radio back then. When their music was 1st being released, everyone thought that they were black. When they actually made a TV appearance, people were so shocked! Lol

I saw them several times and their voice’s were tremendous. Their albums were great to listen to over and over.
They got their name from an early gig where a guy in the audience stood up after one of their numbers and hollered, "That's righteous brother!"
Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil are the songwriters who wrote incredible Pop, R&B, and country. Their songs were recorded by the Supremes, Ronettes, and one of my favorites Dolly Partons here you come again. Linda Ronstadt, the Pointer Sisters, the Everly Brothers, Dione Warwick, and Bett Midler, all recorded songs this duo wrote.
Bill, tall, dark, and handsome, is a Baritone, Bobby, the cute blond is the Tenor. You will never hear a better duo. Perfection. Bobby is gone from us. But he left us a legacy of beautiful music. Bill is still singing at the age of 82. They would each do solo work on their albums. Solo or duo, no one could touch them!
The Righteous Brothers,got their name one night playing at a club they didn't have a name yet, but there was one man in the crowd who shouted out after they finished singing he said,"that was righteous brothers" and it stuck.

Ditto for me as well on all points. All that food Britt listed was just normal menu items for my family growing up. Never cared for the greens (collards, spinach, turnip) but it was just one of those kid preference things as they were served fairly routinely. I think the food is more of a southern culture thing rather than racial culture. At 70, I've learned to eat my spinach too. 🙂

The tall one is Bill Medley and he’s a bass-baritone, the blond is Bobby Hatfield and he’s. A tenor-countertenor. They were dubbed “Blue-Eyed Soul.” No auto tune, none of the tricks used today, just pure talent. You’re right when you say they sound like Smokey Robinson, the Platters, the Commodores-all those smooth-singing , do-wop groups. I have had a thing for Bill and his deep, sexy voice for over sixty years.
I saw Bill in concert last month, and even got to speak to him afterward. Not only has he still got “it” but he’s very nice and genuine. Total swoon!

The smaller guy is Bobby Hatfield and he is the tenor. Bill Medley has the deep baritone voice. Amazing team and the name given to them by Marines at a club who said they were just “ righteous” and they took that name! Bill is still alive and Bobby has passed away. "Blue-eyed Soul" is what they were known for! Bill Medley is the tall one, and was good friends with Elvis in the 70's. Bobby Hatfield is the shorter one, the one who sang "Unchained Melody" solo on the Andy Williams Show in the 60's. Incredible ranges; beautiful voices! By the way, you described a Southern Sunday afternoon dinner to a tee (sweet tea, that is!) LOL!

The Righteous Brothers 's songs were everywhere in a teen's life in the 60's. Nobody sang love songs better except maybe Elvis. As a teen then I can say all my friend's both girls and boys played their songs often at home on our record players!
