There's a live version of this from 1964 in which the guys are wearing tuxedos . . . and Bobby REALLY wails on the high part during that call and response portion near the end. The version you watched is really good. The other version is one for the ages. Simply incredible.
This one is live ...the black and white one is overdubbed with the studio version... this is the actual live version from Shindig...ruclips.net/video/03iSUjHaUxY/видео.html and it was not as clean...
In high school at a dance when you asked a girl for the next dance you prayed for a Righteous Brothers song. These guys would make the girls melt in your arms.
This is one of the top 20 love songs of all time, BrittReacts. Rarely do tenor and baritone vocals mesh this perfectly. Finally this is one of the finest examples of "Blue Eyed Soul" and backed by music producer, Phil Spector's trade mark Wall of Sound. FTR, I am a retired professional music critic with 45 + years experience.
That's why these two were the hit they were, and the sound never gets old. That's also why my generation had some of the greatest songs written/performed. My opinion.
Hatfield and Medley had contrasting vocal ranges, which helped them create a distinctive sound as a duet. They each had the vocal talent to perform as soloists. Medley sang the low parts with his bass-baritone voice, with Hatfield taking the higher-register vocals with his tenor. Hatfield reached the register of a countertenor.
When people watch this beautiful video of Bill & Bobby at their very best, I wonder if they realise this was done long before 'Auto-Tune' was invented. Both guys were so talented and a perfect match for each other. Oh for the great old days of music...
The movie that also played this was Top Gun. For a better rendition of this is their live act on the Andy Williams Show in 1964, it will blow your mind no doubt.
This song by them was the most requested and played on the radio in music history of the 20th century. I charted number 1 for 16 weeks in 1965. Saw them twice live and Medley solo once at his club. Best music act of their time.
In 2015 the single was inducted into the National Recording Registry by the Library of Congress for being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant"
Loved your reaction Britt! I was in high school in 64 when I first heard the Righteous Brothers! Everybody was just blown away by their voices. Other songs by them you'll like are Ebb Tide, You'll Never Walk Alone, and I Believe. Thanks for the reaction!❤
Lots of people have noticed that similarity Britt. It is a very common bass progression. Also, there is another video of this song with a large number of back-up singers. One of them is a young lady trying to make a name for herself in music and starting as a back-up singer in studio and on stage. Her name is Cherilyn Sarkasian. You would know her better today as Cher!! Everybody started somewhere huh?!
RIP. Legendary songwriter and Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Cynthia Weil died Thursday night at 82. The two-time Grammy award winner and Academy Award nominee was the pen behind an impressive roster of hits, including “You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feelin” by The Righteous Brothers, “Here You Come Again” by Dolly Parton, and “Through the Fire” by Chaka Khan,
Bill Medley, the baritone (lower voice) is still with us and will turn 83 in the fall. Sadly, Bobby Hatfield, the tenor, passed about 20 years ago. I saw them live a couple of times in the 1980s. They were magnificent, and a lot of singers and bands from the 1950s and 60s were doing "Oldies" tours in the '80s. Often several would appear on a single bill just as they did back in those earlier decades. The Brothers always sounded Righteous!
This was in mid 60"s,before Grease. You should react to "You'll never walk alone from The Ed Sullivan Show, which really showcases their different voices. Also,Bobby singing "Ebb Tide" Great Reaction!
Ah, I knew you'd love this one! This song was featured in Top Gun (the original), where Tom Cruise sings it to pick up Kelly McGillis' character. And yes, that basic doo-wop beat was very popular in music at the time, and Grease definitely used it for Summer Lovin' (the song you were thinking of, I'm guessing).
These guys are Dynamic and their music is songs are timeless .Thanks Britt . There are 2 more brothers i think u should react ,they are thr EVERLEY BROTHERS . Slightly older than Bill and Bob but truely amazing . Always love your reactions best on U tube Thanks John
Wow Britt, what a great reaction. The Righteous Brothers were part of the soundtrack to my younger days, and it was pleasant to reminisce and bring me back to my youth. Thanks.
This song is certifiably the most played song on the radio and TV in the 20th CENTURY! The entire CENTURY! Just imagine hearing this song on the radio (which we played ALL the time, by the way) several times a day for several years!!! This is the quality of music we heard on the TV and radio for decades! I swear, we were the luckiest people in the world. ( Ha ha, "the luckiest people . . . in the world." Look that up, Britt, then listen to the song that you find and show us your reaction. Trust me . . . you'll LOVE it!) ❤❤❤❤
This is deemed the most played song of the 20th century. Cynthia Weil the co-writer with her husband Barry Mann die this week. Check out all the fantastic popular songs they wrote.
Bill Medley has what they call a bass-baritone voice the deepest subcategory with a range that extends from F2, the F below low C, to the F or F♯ above middle C, F4 or F♯4, respectively. ( I had to look it up)
Bill's voice is a bass-baritone. It's beautiful....❤ Bobby is the one with the tenor with a huge range...❤ Thanks for reacting to these guys, love them....
Bill said in an interview he was performing in Vegas when Elvis was there. One night EP came to his show and on his way out calmly walked across the stage, slapped him on the shoulder and off he and his group went. Audience went wild. Apparently Bill’s shows were sold out from there on, people thinking Elvis would appear again!😂 Bill said he was not complaining at all!
Dionne Warwick did a version of this that knocked my socks off. Give yourself a treat and listen to her do it. I wouldn't have thought anyone could do this Righteous Brothers song like they did. But _she_ did.
That motif that you mention at 3:43 is certainly familiar. It's the most common chord progression in rock history (I IV V for any musicians out there). It's 'Summer Loving', 'Hang On Sloopy', 'Louie Louie', 'Twist and Shout', 'La Bamba', 'Wild Thing' etc etc...
It's kind of like Bill's vocals are formed in a chamber type head/chest space just be the way he's physically put together similar to a large sea shell that you can hear echo/sea sounds from, hard to explain! The song is Summer Nights!
This Phil Spector song (Ronettes, Darlene Love, the Crystals etc.) was the most played single on radio stations in the entire 1960's: According to BMI music publishing, "You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'" was played on American radio and television more times than any other song in the 20th century. It got over 8 million plays from the time it was released until 2000. Note that this includes all versions of the song, not just The Righteous Brothers'.
The quintessential Righteous Brothers song. I think the word you're looking for is "restrained". It feels like he's holding back, and then when he belts out that first "Baby", it goes to a whole different energy. That common chord progression reminds me of a great video about how all pop songs use the same 4 chords. Three Aussie guys roll through like 50 songs, and it's amazing how they all use the same chords.
You’ll really love seeing the Righteous Brothers and the Blossoms jamming on the Ray Charles tune Night Time is the Right Time. Bill Medley really gets down, and Bobby goes crazy. The Blossoms each get their turn to shine, too! It’s a RUclips video from the TV show Shindig. BTW, Bill is still singing and touring and I’m going to see him this Fall!!!
You are simply adorable. I know the righteous brothers are fantastic, and Bill is still alive too, but I watch your videos mainly because you are so damn adorable.
Bill has a baritone voice and Bobby is a counter-tenor with an outrageous 5 octave range. He could freely hit the high C's with ease. These guys are young here, in their early 20's. Bobby had a cold and wasn't feeling his best. Good catch recognizing that beat in another - later - song featured in the movie, "Grease." You would likely appreciate Allen Sherman (a musical comedian popular in the 1960's). He connected the old, comical tune "How Dry I Am" to many classical & popular contemporary tunes when he visited the Boston Pops Orchestra with Arthur Fiedler (sp?). He also took the classic "Triumphal March of Aida" & had it played in Dixieland Style (brilliant). The other version is better.
Love Britt, and I get so excited when she reached to songs I love, but too often she does the wrong version of the songs which disappoints immensely 😔

Baritone. Yes indeedy!
base-baritone, bill can get lower then baritone in soul and inspriation
Yes definitely a bass- baritone.
What He said....
It sounds like he's singing You've Lost through a trumpet mute.
In high school at a dance when you asked a girl for the next dance you prayed for a Righteous Brothers song. These guys would make the girls melt in your arms.
In the 50s and early 60s, in SoCal, we called that dance the "wall grind." Thanks to the girls for those wonderful memories.
These guys are my favorite of all time. Their harmonies are the best and individually they are amazing.

This song had more radio plays than any other song in the 20th century. :)
Bill the baritone has a definite velvet feeling to his voices. This song was the MOST requested song played on the radio in its time.
Britt is so cute when she sees older music.
She is EXTRA cute reacting to the music of my youth. I have seen her "stink-face...cute! sol

Bobby is so awesome!

The Righteous Brothers dropped this song way before grease came out, I believe this song originally came out in 1965.
Hey Britt, Hall and Oates has a beautiful rendition of this as well!
Even though they both have totally different voices. You honestly can’t say one is better than the other. Such a great compliment of talent.
Panty dropper is right. The Rightious Brothers are part of the reason there was a whole generation was born.
